John Albert Perez (1926-2012)

John Albert Perez, 86, of Fillmore, California, passed away Sunday, October 7, 2012. He was born in San Antonio, Texas to Juan Alberto and Ruth Castillo Perez. John was the eldest of seven children. He grew up in Detroit and then lived and worked for many years in Dearborn, Michigan. He moved to Fillmore in 1980 where he worked as an an Instructional Aide in both Fillmore Junior High and Fillmore High School until he retired in 1992. After two previous marriages, in 1982 John married Luanne Hebner Ellison, the Home Economics and Art teacher at Fillmore Junior High School.
John was passionate about being an adventurous eater and cooking for the family. He loved to dance whether it was square dancing or dancing out on the town. He was enthusiastic about keeping up-to-date with the news of the world and actively followed every championship boxing match. John was attentive to maintaining the home he shared with his wife of 30 years and was eager to make a lasting contribution through his work at the school and through his church. He was a card-carrying teamster who loved to talk about politics and never missed an opportunity to discuss the issues of the day or vote for his candidate or issue.
John and Luanne became dedicated travelling partners during their entire marriage, going on trips during every school break and vacation. This same plan intensified in their retirement years with the agreement to go some place for at least two nights, every month.
Most of all, John was a quiet man with a soul full of wisdom and a positive attitude toward life.
He is survived by his wife, Luanne Hebner Perez and son, John Albert Perez, Jr. (Montebello, CA) and three stepsons, Steven Bruce Ellison (Reno, NV), Jeffrey Brian Ellison (Mesa, AZ) and Theodore Scott Ellison (Oakland, CA) plus his four brothers Ralph, Edward, John, and Henry Perez and the rest of his very large number of Perez relations, most of whom still reside in Michigan.
Donations in his honor may be made to Bardsdale Methodist Church, 1498 Bardsdale Avenue, Fillmore, CA 93015, for the planting of roses in a small garden dedicated to John.

Luisa "Licha" Zavala (1923-2012)

August 25, 1923-October 27, 2012
Luisa “Licha” Zavala was a beautiful woman, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and soon to be a great- great grandmother. She was the Matriarch of the ZAVALA family. She was born in Wilmington, Ca on August 25, 1923 and raised in Tijuana, BC. She met, and fell in love with our father Jesus Solis Zavala and they were married on January 11, 1943 . They moved their family to Piru where she raised her 8 children. She worked for Olga Bra Factory in Fillmore, where she made many dear friends. Our mom created a warm and loving home for her children, and grandchildren.
Licha was a devoted Catholic she had a great love for God, was very active at San Salvador Catholic Church, was a member of the Sacred Heart Society and loved to pray the Rosary. She had an incredible sense of humor, she loved to crochet, cook, work in her garden, play bingo, shop, and travel to Las Vegas. But most of all she loved having her family gather in her home.
Mom was the backbone and enduring strength of our family and left to cherish her memories are her eight children: Hess (Joy) Zavala, Victor Zavala, Gloria Davalos, Gabriel Zavala all of Piru, Gilbert (Irene) Zavala of Exeter, Tommy (Martha) Zavala of Fillmore, Rosie (Salvador) Hurtado of Piru and Martha (Steve) Hope of Fillmore. 17grandchildren, 22 great- grandchildren, 1 great grandchild to be born in February and 2 great- great grandchildren to be born in November & February. Licha is also survived by her brother, George Hernandez (Dora) of San Pedro; Sister Eduarda Hernandez of Tijuana and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind dozens of lifelong devoted friends and Compadres. Because of her FAITH and beliefs our mom will be reunited with all those she loved that left before her.
The Zavala family wishes to thank Dr. Swartout and his wonderful staff, the staff and caregivers at Fillmore Convalescent Center, Mathias Gonzalez (mom’s Angel on earth), the many friends and family who visited our mother. We also would like to thank Marie Ramos who took great care of our mother for 8 months while she was at home.
Our mom “Licha” will be remembered for her devotion to God, family and friends, for her positive attitude, and always willing to open her home and help those in need. She will be greatly missed, and she will forever be in our hearts! Our family takes great comfort that she is now with our Lord and Savior and no longer in pain. We love you MOM!!

Joe Paul Gravley Sr. (1932-2012)

Joe Paul Gravley Sr. passed away peacefully on September 22, 2012 in Henderson, NV. Joe was born in Poteau, OK on February 9, 1932 to John and Ruby Gravley and was the fourth of five children. He was raised and went to school in Wichita, KS. At the age of 18 he joined the army where he proudly served his country from 1950-1953. In 1955 he married the love of his life Ellen Mae (Akers) Gravley. They were married for 57 wonderful years and had 5 children. In 1974 Joe brought his family across country to a place called Fillmore, CA to raise his kids and be near other family members. He lived there for over 28 years then moved to Henderson, NV in 2002 to retire with his wife. He was well loved and will be dearly missed.

Joe is survived by his wife Ellen Mae Gravley, his 5 children and their spouses Angela and Steve Core, Joe Jr. and Thaisa Gravley, Rhonda Asfor, Shiryl and Bob Mandeville, Leanne and Phil Mori, along with 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on October 20, 2012 at 1:00 PM at the Fillmore Foursquare Church located at 324 Sespe Ave, Fillmore, CA.

Willena Reed Taylor (1920-2012)

Willena Reed Taylor (nee – Dorothy Willena Reed), 92, passed away October 4, 2012, of complications from a stroke, in the Fillmore Convalescent Center. She was born in Frost, Texas, April 15, 1920 to Will and Myrtle Reed. She graduated from Rio Vista High School in 1938. She then attended Draughon’s Business College in San Antonio. While living in Shallowater and working in Littlefield at the Palace Theater she met the love of her life, A.B. Taylor, Jr. They married in 1944 while he was in the Navy. They moved to Long Beach, CA in 1948. She attended Long Beach City College, studying business. They came to Fillmore in 1955.
She had a women’s clothing store for a number of years in the ‘60s at 360 Central Ave. called Willena’s. She also worked a number of years in the Elkin’s Ranch Golf Course snack bar.
She was active in Ebell and belonged to Theta Sigma Phi sorority.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, A.B.Taylor, Jr.
She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Terry and Sally of Chico, Ca; Son Larry of Houston, TX; Son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Rebecca of Tehachapi, CA. Her sister Jean of Glendale, AZ. Numerous grand and great-grand children.
We (her sons) would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the Orange Blossom Villa Senior Living Center in Fillmore for the wonderful care she received during the year and a half she lived there. We’d also like to thank Santa Paula Hospital, the Fillmore Convalescent Center, and Assisted Home Hospice for their loving care in her last days.
At her request, Willena will be cremated and there will be no services.

Pasty Lynne Lawrence went to be with the Lord her Savior on October 1st while surrounded by her five loving children. Pat and Dennis Lawrence raised their five children, Cindy, Gail, Guy, Scott, and Michael in Fillmore from 1968-89. In addition to her children and their spouses, Pat has left behind twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren; she will be missed by family and friends tremendously. Pat remained in frequent contact with her numerous close friends from Fillmore throughout the years.

LaVerre Vaden Askren (1918-2012)

On August 26, 2012 LaVerre Vaden Askren answered the call to join his beloved wife Mary Jane for eternity. He was born September 6, 1918 in Seneca, Kansas to Ernest and Mabel Askren.
While traveling the country with an orchestra he had formed with his brother, Ernie, he met Mary Jane Yetter. They married in 1940 and remained so until her death in February of this year.
He served honorably with the United States Army in Germany during WWII, receiving several medals including a Bronze Star.
His retirement years were spent building, repairing, and cleaning CooCoo and Grandfather Clocks. He was known throughout the County as the “Clock Doctor”.
He possessed great humor, a positive spirit, and a beautiful singing voice; none of which ever waivered.
Those left to rejoice in their reunion are: daughter Judith, son Patrick and wife Carol, and son Michael. Also; 6 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren.

Aaron Palmer (1988-2012)

Aaron Palmer, 24, Seminole resident, died Saturday, August 25, 2012 in Seminole.
Aaron was born July 31, 1988 in Santa Paula California to Randall Palmer and Mary (Hanger) Hooper.
Aaron moved to Seminole in 2004 from Fillmore, California.
Aaron was manager of the Vailaint Detail Shop in Seminole.
He loved to fish and was a very talented artist. Aaron had a passion for cars.
Aaron was an outstanding football player in high school.
Most of all Aaron was a hard worker and a very loving and dedicated husband and father.
Aaron is survived by his wife, Nicole Attocknie of Seminole: his daughter, Mia Ann Marie Palmer of Seminole; one brother Eric Kigma of Chestnut, Illinois; a sister, Tiffany Palmer of Seminole, whom he was very close to and had a special bond with; mother and stepfather, Mary and Robert Hooper of Chestnut, Illinois; father Randall Palmer also survive him.
He is also survived by a grandfather, Bob Palmer of Fillmore California and his wife Shirley; an aunt, Bobbie Sue Palmer and cousin, Damien Ruiz, which he took care of in the home, also survive him.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 31, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Carl Whitfield and Vince Vanlandingham also officiated the service.
Honorary bearers were Eric Kigma, David Krause, Levi Pierce, Richy Kelly, Austin Laxton, Cody Stancell, Vince Vanlandingham, Damien Ruiz, Case Grizzle and Robert Hooper.

Eleanor Jean Perkins (1927-2012)

Our beloved Eleanor Jean Perkins passed away at Santa Paula Hospital on September 6, 2012, following a long and hard-fought battle. She was born in Fillmore, California on March 22, 1927 to Lester and Ruth Burroughs. Her family consisted of two older sisters, a younger sister and younger brother, placing her squarely as the middle child, the peace keeper. She graduated from Fillmore High School in 1945 and went on to marry Eddie Earl Perkins in 1947, a WWII Navy veteran. In 1949, they were blessed with a daughter, Susan, and then welcomed their second daughter, Peggy, two years later. Eleanor’s whole life was spent as a dedicated home-maker, wife and mother, with the majority of her life spent on Perkins’ ranch where Eddie and she made their home. She worked in town from time to time and enjoyed her work at Western Auto and the Fillmore Bootery. Eleanor always remembered those times in her life fondly as she loved meeting new people, seeing old friends and doing something that she took pride in.
The cornerstone of Eleanor’s life was her unwavering faith in God. She was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fillmore and lived her life following Jesus’ example of living simply and with purpose. Her faith was what sustained her throughout her life, saying nightly prayers and turning to God not just for the big things, but also to thank him for the little ones. She was passionate about nature, often choosing to spend her time outside with her flowers or perusing the ranch on her walks she so enjoyed. In 1996, Eleanor and Eddie reached a milestone in their lives, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with their family members by their sides. In 1999, Eddie suffered a stroke and Eleanor unselfishly became his primary caregiver, spending her days caring for him in their home until he passed away in 2002.
They shared a special bond that demonstrated to those who knew them the dedication and love that is possible between two people. Eleanor had a deep devotion to her family and is survived by her sister Kathleen Amrhine (nee Burroughs), daughters Susan League and Peggy Evans (Gene Evans, D.D.S.), granddaughters Carrie Alamillo (Timmy), Amy de la Piedra (Doug), Linsey Evans, and Abby League, great-grandchildren Moneh Tello, Evan Alamillo, Anthony Chessani, Della Alamillo, and Thomas Alamillo, and great-great-grandson David Tello, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Eddie Perkins after 56 years of marriage, beloved parents Lester and Ruth Burroughs and siblings Elaine Moller, Patricia Erickson and Donald Burroughs. Eleanor’s life was one spent loving God, her family and friends.
She was happiest surrounded by beauty and believed everyday was worth living to its fullest. She will be truly missed by all those who knew and loved her, whether it was by the name Mom, Mimi, Grandma Nor or simply and blessedly Eleanor. “You’ll find that life is still worthwhile, if you just smile.” We’ll keep on smiling, Eleanor, because we were honored that you were here to teach us how. Eleanor’s family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to all the men and women at Santa Paula Hospital, and a special and heartfelt thank you to Norma Viorato for her dedication to caring for Eleanor and the love and happiness she shared with her daily. A private memorial service will be held Thursday, September 13, 2012. Arrangements were entrusted to Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura. Joseph Alcocer Jr. (1948-2012)

Joseph Alcocer Jr., age 64, passed away Sunday August 27, 2012 at UCLA Medical Center after a 5 month courageous battle with leukemia.
Joseph also known as “Joe” was a life-long resident of Piru, Ca. Joseph graduated from Fillmore High School and shortly after married his high school sweetheart, Josephine Alcocer. They were married for 42 years and together raised 3 children.
Joseph had a love for deer hunting and being outdoors. He looked forward to his yearly hunting trips to the Sierra Mountains and traveling out of state with his close friends. He also enjoyed fishing and camping. Joseph had so many great memories and stories of his adventures with his buddies. In his younger years Joseph was fond of his motorcycles and cars and took pride in them.
Joseph worked for General Motors as an auto worker for 35 years and retired at the age of 54. The years following his retirement Joseph was able to lead a more relaxed and enjoyable life with his family. He enjoyed working in his yard and spending time with his dogs. He was able to spend quality time with his wife. He cherished the times he got to spend with his children and grandchildren.
Joseph is preceded in death by his father, Joe G Alcocer and mother, Elisa Alcocer. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Alcocer; son, Joseph Alcocer and wife Julia; daughter, Sunshine Gray and husband Jeremy Gray ; son, Mike Alcocer. He is also survived by his sister, Olivia Magallon and husband Joe; sister, Sonia Oseguera and husband Felix. He also leaves 3 grandchildren: Joseph Miller Alcocer; Sierra Gray, and Gerrit Gray and 6 nieces and nephews.
Joseph was a very generous man who was always willing to help others in time of need. He had a kind heart and gave unselfishly to family and friends. We will forever remember his love and devotion to his family.
Funeral Services Honoring the Life of Joseph Alcocer Jr. will be held at San Salvador Mission Parish in Piru, CA., beginning first with the recitation of the rosary at 7pm, Friday, August 31st. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am, Saturday, September 1st with Father Barney Gatlin Officiating. Committal & Interment will follow immediately at Piru Cemetery. A potluck reception will take place at Britt Park in Piru, CA following the interment.

Laurabelle J. Starnes (1928-2012)

Laurabelle J. Starnes passed away on Friday August 17, 2012, 2012 in Fillmore, CA. She was 84 years old. Her husband Jack of 49 ½ years, preceded her death in 1997. Laurabelle is survived by daughters Linda Faris (Jim) and Kathy Campbell both of Fillmore and brother Stanley Jones also of Fillmore. Grandchildren include Laurie Best (Jon), Mike Campbell (Jenny) and Jimmy Faris (Mindi) Great-grandchildren are Miriam (10), Hannah (10), George (8) and William (4) Campbell of Gibsonville, NC, Emma (7) and Elena (6) Best of Stockton, CA. and Bryn (10months) Faris of Thousand Oaks, CA

At the request of Laurabelle, there will not be a public memorial or graveside service. The extended family will gather around Christmas time and will collectively honor her at that time.

Gretchen Anderson (1912-2012)

Gretchen Anderson, 100, died peacefully on Wednesday August 15 in Fillmore, California. A funeral was held last Saturday, August 18. Born as Gretchen Stewart, at age 10 she moved with her family to Fillmore from Bolivar, Missouri. A 1930 graduate of Fillmore High School, Gretchen had a sharp mind, a love of other people and an excellent sense of humor. She worked for the telephone company (what is now AT&T) for 43 years, as Fillmore’s chief operator, then as a regional manager. At one time she was the only woman manager out of the 600 managers in Southern California. She enjoyed people and had many friends from the organizations she belonged to: Business and Professional Women, Ebell Club, and the Women’s Society Circle of her the Faith Community Church. Gretchen was married and widowed twice to Ralph Stanley and Ray Anderson. Gretchen was one of eight children. Kenny Stewart, Sid Stewart, Walt Stewart, Guy Stewart, Ruth Howard, Effie Hancock, and Mayme Hurt. She is survived by fourteen niece and nephews, all who will miss her greatly.

Marilyn Joyce Kernen (1929-2012)

Our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, Marilyn Joyce Kernen, of Fillmore, passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2012.
Marilyn was born in Covina, California on October 15, 1929. She attended Clearwater Junior High, where she was always the perfect student, sitting in the front row, getting excellent grades. That was where she met the love of her life and her best friend, Bob Kernen, in the 8th grade, when he was sent to the front row for talking too much in the back of the class.
After graduating from high school, she spent several years working as a bank teller. She married Bob in 1956 and they had 51 beautiful years together before his death in 2007. After the birth of her first child, she quit her job at the bank and began her job as a full-time mother. Marilyn and Bob raised their family for several years in Costa Mesa, spent 10 happy years in Hemet, California, and then moved to Fillmore in 1981.
Marilyn had a wry sense of humor and loved late night TV, murder mysteries, black coffee, and family dinners on the weekends. She was the world’s best listener and any problem seemed easier to handle once it was talked over with her. She made Christmas and birthdays so special for her kids and grandchildren, and lived her life with quiet strength and dignity. We will miss her more than words can express, but we take comfort in the many memories we have of all the years we spent with her. We know she is reunited with Bob, and is now at peace.
Her husband, Robert Kernen, and mother, Marie Smith, preceded Marilyn in death. She is survived by her three daughters, Diane Smith (husband Tony) of Ventura, Joyce Davantzis, (husband Dean) of Los Osos, and Beverly Garnica (husband John) of Fillmore. Marilyn also leaves her six grandchildren; Natalie, Laura and Grace Garnica, Candice and Matthew Davantzis and Alex Munoz, her beloved sister and brother-in-law Carol and Jim Painter, and her three nephews, Scott, Paul and Darrin Walker.
A memorial service for Marilyn is scheduled for Saturday, August 25th, at 1:00 p.m. Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 600 Central Avenue, Fillmore, California.

Albert R. Bellio (1926-2012)

Albert R. Bellio july 5, 1926 - july 29, 2012
Albert Roy Bellio, born July 5, 1926 in Chicago; he passed away after a brief illness on July 29, 2012 surrounded by his family in Cape Coral, Florida. Son of Joseph and Clara Bellio, widower of his loving wife Mary Ann, he was an Army veteran and self-made Entrepreneur.
Albert was employed with Eaton Laboratories and Mars Co. for many years. He became a Real Estate developer in California and Florida. Albert loved his work in Construction and Investments all his life. He enjoyed boating, fishing and traveling the world. Cherishing his memory, he is survived by his loving children Dean Sr., Debra and Dari, his brother Richard, his companion Lillian Burn, his grandchildren Dean Jr., Kristin, James III, Jennifer, Jamie, Stevie, Julie and Nico, and his great grandchildren Dean III., Ashley, Brandon, Brittany, Tyler, Ashton, Jeramiah, Josiah, Jacob, Taylor, Hailey, James IV, Jayden and Ashton. They will keep him in their hearts forever.
A Tribute Service will be held on Saturday August 18, 2012 at 10:30am. at Bastian and Perrott, Oswald Mortuary, 18728 Parthenia St. Northridge, CA 91324. He will be interred immediately afterward at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery, 11160 Stranford Ave. Mission Hills, CA 91345.

Viola Riesgo Garnica (1932-2012)

Viola Riesgo Garnica, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away peacefully after a brief hospitalization for an infection, the morning of Sunday, August 5, 2012, at her home in Fillmore surrounded by her family. She had bravely battled non-Hodgkins Lymphoma since 2009. She had just celebrated her 80th birthday, having been in remission from cancer for a year.
Viola Catherine Riesgo was born on June 25, 1932, to cement mason James and housewife Lou Riesgo of Fillmore. The third of four Riesgo children, she began her education in Fillmore’s segregated schools during the height of the Depression. A determined 5-year-old, Viola enrolled herself in Sespe School kindergarten instead of the old Mountain View School. Her innocent determination to attend school with her friends broke the ‘color’ barrier of the time opening the doors for many others to follow. She excelled in mathematics, spelling, reading, writing and sports. While attending Fillmore High School she lettered in four sports and was vice president of the Girls’ Athletic Association. She graduated from Fillmore High with the Class of 1950 and had hoped to attend college but the Korean War and family necessity required her to go to work. She worked as an office clerk for the Frank Munoz Pipeyard until 1955 when she married her next door neighbor, Louis Garnica. The couple started a family, raising three daughters, Catherine, Luanne and Debra. As a working mother Viola was first a seamstress, then a payroll clerk and office administrator for the Fashion Development (Olga) Corporation in Fillmore. She was an officer with the Business and Professional Women’s service club and also served on the Fillmore Planning Commission.
Viola and her family helped to fundraise for the new St.Francis of Assisi Church on Highway 126 in Fillmore. Louis and she chaired the St. Francis Church fireworks booth for 16 years with help from family and friends. Viola and Louis also made many friends as members of the church-affiliated Padrinos and Los Caballeros organizations. When Viola retired from the Olga Company after 25 years she was able to help raise her five grandchildren, one of the greatest joys of her life. And, because she and her husband missed the chance to attend college, she made sure that her three daughters attended and graduated from Pepperdine University. She also encouraged four of her five grandchildren -- Will, Marie, Karen and Jim -- to graduate from California public universities, with the fifth grandchild, Megan, on track to graduate from Cal State University, Monterey Bay in two years.
Viola was an affectionate “Nana” to her family and as a consummate cook. She lovingly prepared everything from tasty lunches and snacks to lavish meals of Mexican, Italian and All-American fare for “family night” dinners and special occasions. She loved to tend to her rose garden and backyard filled with fruit trees and exotic plumeria plants. In later years she enjoyed road trips along the historic “Route 66” highways through Nevada and other western states, visiting the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, and attending mariachi festivals in Arizona, New Mexico and Las Vegas.
Viola is survived by Louis, her devoted husband of 57 years; sister Eleanor Vargas of Fillmore; brothers Frank Riesgo of Santa Paula and James Riesgo of Ventura; daughters Catherine Garnica of Fillmore, Luanne and son-in-law John Schaper of Simi Valley and Debra and son-in-law Kevin Louth of Fillmore; grandsons Will Schaper of Madrid, Spain, and Jim Schaper of Simi Valley; granddaughters Marie Schaper of San Diego, Karen and Megan Louth of Fillmore; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, goddaughters, godsons and friends.
Family and friends may visit 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 12, 2012, at Skillin-Snyder Mortuary in Fillmore. Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fillmore on Monday, August 13 at 10 a.m. Graveside services will follow at Bardsdale Cemetary. A reception will follow at the St. Francis of Assisi Church hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to the “Relay for Life” fundraise.

Joseph G. Tirado, 54, of San Francisco, passed away July 15, 2012, while surrounded by family and close friends.
Joseph was born July 30, 1957, in Santa Paula, California, to Jose Guadalupe Tirado and Ida (Sanchez) Tirado.
He graduated from Fillmore High School in 1975. He continued his education at California State University, Northridge, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and obtained his Master of Business Administration Degree from California State Polytechnic University Pomona.
He found great joy in philanthropic works, active involvement in his parish community, and the years he served as the Master of Ceremonies for the Bishop of San Jose, P.J. McGrath. He enjoyed traveling, the arts, and fine culinary experiences. He treasured time with family and friends and will always be remembered for his thoughtfulness and remarkable sense of humor.
He is survived by his father, J.G. Tirado of Piru; brothers and their spouses, Frank and Karen Tirado of San Antonio, Texas, and Greg and Annie Tirado of Riverside, California; his sister and her spouse, Nini and Joseph Trafecanty of Newhall, California; his sister Julie Jimenez of Pisa, Italy; and several nephews, nieces, and great nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida (Sanchez) Tirado.
The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 10, 2012, 11:00 a.m., at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fillmore. Interment at Bardsdale Cemetery will immediately follow.

Joyce Lee Zavala (Stoner) (1937-2012)

Joyce Lee Zavala( Stoner), born on November 16, 1937 in Tuckerman, AR, went to meet her Lord on Thursday July 19, 2012 in Plano, TX at the age of 74, after a lengthy battle with several illnesses. Mom was a resident of Frisco, TX for the past six years and was a longtime resident of Fillmore, CA. She graduated from Fillmore High School in 1956. She worked for Sunkist in the Fillmore-Piru Citrus Association beginning in 1969 and retired in 2000 after 31 years. Mom loved spending time with her children and grandchildren when they came to visit.
She will be remembered for her dry sense of humor, quick wit, undying compassion and her willingness to help wherever and whenever she could.
Our lives have changed forever. Learning to live without your physical presence is a daily challenge. We love you and miss you more than words could express.
She will be deeply missed by all her family. She was preceded in death by her mother (Alma Jackson) father (Lewis), sister (Mary Vest) and granddaughter (Amber Zavala). She is survived by her brother, Lewis Jackson Jr, children Richard, Regina, Joe, Michael (Ronnell) and Patrick (Angelica). Also, by her grandchildren Suzanne, Jenna, Kristopher, Cameron, Devyn, Joseph, Julia, Jennifer, Shane, December, Destyni, Brandon, Nathan, Anthony, Dezeray, Jazmine, Matthew, Ethan and Isabella Zavala. And, two great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Richard.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date, per family request.

Reva “Irene” Horn (1921-2012)

Reva “Irene” Horn
May 28, 1921 – July 20, 2012
Irene was the second child of Frank and Fern Parks of Success, Arkansas.
Wearing a blue dress, she married Cyrus Horn in 1936 and moved to Fillmore, California in 1946.
She worked for several local businesses and retired from the Fillmore School District as a cafeteria manager for San Cayetano Elementary School.
Irene was an active member of the Fillmore Church of Christ since 1946, helping with Vacation Bible School, opening her home and cooking for potlucks. Her dishes were always made with love: especially her famous Missouri cookies.
“Rene” loved the colors red and yellow; she enjoyed crocheting, visiting with friends, walking, telling stories, feeding guests and serving others in any way she could.
She was preceded in death by parents Frank and Fern Parks, husband Cyrus Horn, brothers George and Rufus (Buck) Parks, sister Helena (Sis) Brazell and son Jim Horn.
Irene is survived by her sister Violet (Red) Shephard, son Frank Horn (wife Debbie), daughter Betty Brown (husband Roger), six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, many nephews and nieces, and a large circle of friends.

Evelyn Cozier Grove (1920-2012)

Evelyn Cozier Grove passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2012.
Evelyn was born in Omaha, Nebraska on November 6, 1920 to parents, Ethel and Harold Cozier. She attended Fillmore Elementary School with two sisters, Doris and Eileen. Evelyn graduated from Fillmore High School in 1938, Santa Barbara State College in 1942, and graduate work at the University of Washington in Seattle.
She married Hollis Grove on October 25, 1946, and lived in Kimberly, Idaho from 1946 to 1950, moved to Seattle, Washington from 1951 to 1956 where she taught first and second grade. Evelyn moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1957, then to Long Beach, California where she again taught first and second grade. She moved with Husband, Hollis to Las Vegas, Nevada and taught first and second grade from 1959 to 1960.
Evelyn arrived in Ventura in 1960 and taught first and second grade at El Camino, Will Rogers and Junipero Sierra schools until retirement in 1977.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Hollis Grove, her Sister Eileen and good friend Glen Marcus. Evelyn is survived by Sister Doris Kennedy and many nieces and nephews.
Evelyn dearly loved cats, gardening, and telling jokes. She attended weekly business discussions at the Senior Center, bingo at McDonalds, enjoyed walking in the mall, San Buenaventura Women’s Club, and College Methodist Church.
Upon her request, no services will be held.

Joe Bart Nunez (1910-2012)

On July 6, 2012, just 49 days short of his 102 birthday, Joe Bart Nunez was finally able to rest. He was born on August 24, 1910, in El Monte, CA, the eldest son and only remaining of 10 children born to Ramon & Ysabel Martinez Nunez. Passing before him were his siblings Pauline Ruiz, Lillian Aguirre, Jess, Sylvester, Ralph, Eleanor Dominguez, Carmen, Ramona and Carmen. In 1993, he was preceded in death by Nettie, his beloved wife of 56 years.
He was a man of faith, a member of the St. Francis of Assisi parish in Fillmore. He belonged to the Holy Name Society, was an usher and volunteered for various activities, and later attended services at the San Salvador Mission in Piru.
Joe saw & experienced many changes in the century of his life. He was known for his extraordinary recollections of all things. He told many stories, like being sent out as a teenager to look for victims of the San Francisquito Dam tragedy, and of growing up during the boom-town days of Piru.
Joe worked for over 50 years as the only employee of Goodenough Ranch. He was the embodiment of the term "hard-working", spending his entire week working on the job and then tending to his yard during his time off. Upon his retirement, he and Nettie moved to their home in Piru, where he had l6 fruit trees, including a sweet lime tree that had been grafted to an orange tree by his father, which produced both types of fruit.
He was truly an outdoors-man, be it hunting or camping and fishing with his family in the eastern Sierras as a younger man, or simply tending his extensive array of fruit trees in his yard. He took particular joy in harvesting macadamia nuts from his tree. He always enjoyed giving away whatever his trees happened to be producing. One of his greatest joys was curing olives from his trees & giving jars away to anyone lucky enough to be around before they ran out. He loved his flowers, caring for his rose bushes, poinsettias, and geraniums. He especially loved all his dogs, always having one for a pet and growing so close to them that their loss was always hard. He leaves behind his beloved companion Harley.
Joe was an athlete, playing baseball in his youth for the team from Piru. He remembered playing teams from Carpinteria as well as others from the county. He played second base. He followed all sports, but it was no surprise that he was an avid baseball fan, rooting for the Angels, a particular source of contention when it came to the Dodger fans in the family.
Although he had to quit school to help support his family, and probably because of that, he valued education. It was with his help that his grandchildren were both able to graduate from college.
The family would like to thank all the staff from the Fillmore Convalescent Center and Assisted Home Hospice, who provided excellent care for Joe during his last 3 years.
Joe is survived by his only child, daughter Joanne and her husband Wayne Fore, and much-loved grandchildren Brianna Fore and Chad Fore. He also leaves his friend and brother-in-law Eddie Villa, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Thursday July 12, 2012 from 5-8pm with a rosary recited at 7:00pm, at San Salvador Mission in Piru. Funeral mass will be held Friday, July 13, 2012 at 9:00am, Also at San Salvador Mission. Arrangements are under the direction of Skillin-Carroll Mortuary Fillmore. Pedro Diaz (1923-2012)

Pedro Diaz was born on March 2, 1923 in Tangancicuaro, Michoacan, Mexico to Luis and Guadalupe Diaz. In the early morning hours of June 30th, Pedro passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife of 62 years, his 7 children, and loving grandchildren.
Pedro was born and raised in Tangancicuaro, Michoacan, and at the age of 26 he married Ana Rodriguez on July 27, 1949. In the years that followed they began expanding their family with the births of their 7 children: Luz, Luis, Ramiro, Ramon, Rafael, Ana, and Pedro. They would’ve had 7 sons, sadly, two of them passed away to childhood illnesses. Despite his difficult childhood Pedro was a responsible and loving father, who taught his children the value of love, respect, and strength. All of which was necessary when Pedro began going to the United States in the 1950’s as part of the Bracero Program. The program required him to spend a good deal of time away from his family but as a devoted husband and father he always mailed them his earnings from his work. In 1969 he obtained legal residency for himself, his wife and his children; and brought them to the United States. It was always said, that it was important for them to come together and all at once.
Once his family was settled into Fillmore he began working in neighboring cities, in the fields of a chicken farm and in a factory that produced airplane windows. Even after he retired at the age of 65 he continued to work part-time taking care of a small ranch in Moorpark. He always kept himself busy working on one project or another and could often be seen riding his bike to the store to buy groceries for him and his wife. One of his sister-in-laws said it best, Pedro was like an ant, always moving, always working, and very persistent. When he wasn’t working he enjoyed being at home either watching or listening to a Los Angeles Dodger game.
Pedro will now be a guardian angel to his wife, Ana, his children, Luz and Javier Alcaraz, Luis and Jenny Diaz, Ramiro and Trini Diaz, Ramon and Eva Diaz, Rafael and Lupe Diaz, Ana and Agustin Campos, and Pedro Diaz, 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Our family would like to acknowledge and thank the Fillmore Convalescent Home and Assisted Home Hospice staff who took such great care of our father in his last days. Thank you for your kindness and patience and for allowing our family to be with our father at all hours. We will be forever grateful for your help and hospitality.
