It’s the end of August here in the town of Fillmore, and you know what that means. It means the return of Flashes football. The Flashes traveled to Moorpark College to take on the Grace Brethren Lancers for the first game of the 2014 season.

The Lancers won the coin toss and chose to defer to the second half. The Flashes offence started at the Lancers 25 yard line. Fillmore handed the ball off to Justin Coert for their first 1st down of the season. The Flashes offence stalled after that, and they were forced to punt the ball away. The Lancers called for a fair catch on the Flashes 19 yard line with 10 minutes left in the 1st quarter. The Lancers scored on a 28 yard touchdown pass, which was set up by a 17 yard rush on the previous play. The 2 point conversion was no good, so with 6:32 left in the first quarter the Lancers lead 6-0. The Lancers kicked the ball off to Hayden Wright, and he made them pay with a 37 yard return. The Flashes offense still couldn’t get anything going as they were forced to punt with 4:30 left in the 1st quarter. Grace Brethren received the ball at the 25 yard line. The Fillmore defense stepped up and forced the Lancers to punt with 2:18 left in the 1st quarter. On 3rd down Fillmore completed a 12 yard pass down to the Lancers 37 yard line.

Fillmore still trailed 6-0 going in to the 2nd quarter. The Lancers defense forced a 3 and out as Fillmore was forced to punt again. The Lancers called for a fair catch at the 21 yard line. On 1st down the Lancers quarterback rushed the ball 11 yards for a 1st down. The Flashes defense stepped up, and on the next play forced a fumble, and they recovered at their own 42 yard line. Fillmore’s offence still couldn’t get anything going and they were forced to punt the ball away with 9:10 left in the 2nd quarter. Grace Brethren called for a fair catch at their own 10 yard line. On 2nd down and 6 the Lancers passed the ball 15 yards for a first down at the 29 yard line. The Flashes defense stepped up again as they forced the Lancers to punt. The ball went into the end zone for a touchback, and the ball was brought out to the 20. However the offense couldn’t do much as they were forced to punt again. The Lancers drove the ball all the way into the red zone before their pass was intercepted at the 10 yard line by Damien Gonzalez. Fillmore couldn’t put up points and they went into the locker room at halftime down 6-0.

Grace Brethren received the ball to start the second half, and they returned the ball down to the 42 yard line of the Flashes. Grace Brethren had the ball at the 28 yard line and ran the ball 21 yards down to the 7 yard line with 8:45 left in the 3rd quarter. Seconds later a 7 yard run gave the lancers a 13-0 lead. Fillmore received the ball, but they still couldn’t figure out that Lancer defense and they punted it down to the 46 yard line. The Lancers took over and they scored on a 21 yard touchdown run to put them up 19-0. They decided to go for the 2 point conversion and they got it, and they lead ballooned up to 21-0. Fillmore received the ball and took it down to the 25 yard line. A personal foul, and an ejection by Grace Brethren pushed the ball all the way up to the 45 yard line. Fillmore punted the ball again down to the 24 yard line. Grace Brethren couldn’t do anything on offence either as Fillmore forced them to punt with 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Fillmore went into the final quarter down 21-0

Fillmore was stopped on 3rd down on their next drive, but they elected to go for it on 4th down. Michael Luna caught the 4th down pass and gained 20 yards. Later on the Flashes went for it on 4th down again, but the Lancer defense held strong and forced a turn over on downs. Grace Brethren started with the ball on their own 10 yard line. They took the ball all the way down to the Flashed 30 yard line, and with 4 minutes left in the game they rushed the ball 17 yards down to the 13 yard line. The Lancers get the ball down to the 3 yard line where they punched it in one more time to push the lead to 27-0 with 3:21 left in the game. Fillmore received the ball with just over 2 minutes left. The Lancers intercept a 4th down pass with 30 seconds left and Grace Brethren won the game 27-0.

What is the “Flash Mob”? The flash mob is a group of students from Fillmore High School who cheer on the football team both at home and at the away games. During home games, they have dress up days; for example, last Friday was “Neon Night”. For our away games, students are given the opportunity to ride a rooter’s bus to and from the game for only five dollars.

The first away game was a success. About fifteen students rode the bus to encourage the Fillmore Flashes. We hope to double that number at the next away game tomorrow at Oak Park. The Flash mob is about building both school and community spirit. It is about creating a sense of unity. So next time you are wondering what to do on a Friday night, why not join the Flash mob and show what school spirit really looks like.

The Golden Bear football team opens the season this Saturday, September 6 at 6 p.m. at #3 Minnesota Duluth.
A staple under coach Ryan Williams in his time at the helm of the program has been quarterback competition. While the team has featured an incumbent starter every season, Williams has entered camp with the starting spot up for grabs each year.

It has been no different this fall, "With five quarterbacks, we have a talented group of players that are all at different stages of their career," said Williams.

He continued, "Corey Cole won our starting job in camp because of some of the things he brings to the table athletically and his decision making ability.

He'll get his first shot at the quarterback position. "Even though he hasn't played in a game at quarterback at the college level yet, we've put him through a lot of paces in practice and scrimmages where I feel he'll do a very good job when that game day comes."

"Corey's been a really good decision maker in camp. He's thrown the ball better than in previous years when he competed for a starting job. Above all, his speed, athleticism and ability to make something out of nothing and scramble when a play breaks down is pretty threatening."

Cole enters his junior year as the starting quarterback after serving a key role as a wide receiver and kick returner last year. He was fourth on the team in receptions (17), yards (190) and led the team in kickoff returns (13) with a 30.0 yard average including an NCAA record 100-yard return for a touchdown in a 28-24 win at Wayne State.

As a freshman in 2012, he had five catches for 74 yards and was the primary punt returner with 14 returns (out of 15 for the team) for a 6.1 yard average and a long of 17.

Corey is 2011 Graduate of Fillmore High School. He is the son of Craig and Lynn Cole and the younger brother of former Concordia offensive guard Curtis Cole.

This year the Fillmore High School Cross Country Mammoth Lakes Summer Camp participation was at a great success with a fresh bunch of runners having their first experience in Mammoth to train. For more than six weeks during the hot summer days over forty runners kicked off their season of running to prepare for the upcoming season. As a result and the combined efforts of coaches, parents and supporters, we were able to invite twenty four high school runners to the 7th annual Mammoth Lakes Summer Camp for an intense running week. These athletes were put to the test of high altitude training over a course of eight days. Every morning the team rose bright and early to run anywhere between four and ten miles on various types of terrain in the Inyo National Forest. The Fillmore High School athletes had many opportunities to test their running ability up hills, across mountains and through large meadows. In addition, the athletes had many bonding moments of which friendships, team bonding and the sense of team were heightened. In the mix we were able to take up eighteen new Mammoth camp runners and six veteran runners. The mixture of new with the old allowed for the veteran runners to share their expertise while the new runners were able to learn from those with experience. As a result, this year’s camp stood out over all the rest, for one the numbers greatly increased but more importantly it stood out because this large group came together as a team and learned how to work together to accomplish their goals.

Prior to the Mammoth Summer Camp, the athletes had a foundation of six weeks of training. The runners started fundraising for the trip back in June where they held two car washes, thanks to William L. Morris for always making your facility and equipment available to us. In addition friends, family and various businesses came through and sponsored the athletes. We would like to thank the following businesses for their support, Ernie’s Auto Care & Smog, Bob’s Radiator, Central Market, Aguirre Financial, Diamond Realty, FZ Tax Services, Ay Chihuahua Mexican food, Bennet’s Honey Farm, La Mitchocan, Estrella Market, Vons, La Unica, Fillmore Dentistry, Patterson Hardware, Fillmore Rentals, Maher Insurance (Farmer’s Insurance) and all the parents, families and friends for making possible this great opportunity for these runners. I would like to extend a special thanks to our parents who volunteered to chaperone the trip, Anthony and Brandy Tafoya. Thank you for the great meals and the security of knowing you are there to support the runners and coaches in the program. In addition the assistant coaches, Epi Torres, Victor Rodriguez and Anthony Rodriguez who work around the clock donating time to both the regular season and off season has made our program what it is today. We appreciate all the support and dedication you constantly give to the team. Our mission this year for the cross country program is to prepare for the expected difficult year ahead of us. Our program has been success for many years. The athletes are very dedicated, consistent and mindful of their training. The runners have set goals for this season, and are working hard every day to prepare for the upcoming season. We are really excited this year and believe this summer program and camp has helped our team grow both individually and as a team.

On May 10th the team from Perce's Kenpo Karate Studio competed at the Flores Brothers Inter School Tournament in Oxnard. Our Students competed in forms, weapons, showmanship, and sparring. Each and every student did an
outstanding job performing and representing our school. The tournament hosted over 120 competitors from Ventura and L.A. County.

Kiana Hope and Jesus Mendoza medal at CIF Finals; Carlos Briceno and Kayla Grove perform strong as all Fillmore Flashes complete a successful post season campaign.

Kiana Hope and Jesus Mendoza place 3rd and 4th over all at the division 4 CIF Championships in the Girls 3200 meters and Boys 1600 meters respectively. Carlos Briceno, Boys 110 meter high hurdles and Kayla Grove, girls shot put wrap up a successful Track and Field 2014 Campaign.

Hope saved the best for last, producing life time best after life time best, from the county championships to CIF prelims than CIF finals. Her 3200 meter clocking of 11:14.96 was 5 seconds faster than her previous best posted at prelims the week before and solid enough to earn her the 3rd over all place medal. "Coaching Kiana has been an amazing experience this season, having her in a race is like having a coach in a race, except much faster. You can always depend on her to deliver and come through at precisely the time and effort that she needs to come in at. She understands the race dynamics to a whole new level, she's able to see the natural breaks, and she can always anticipate any substantial and race changing move, enabling her to react to them as they happen and thus becoming a strong presence in every race". After graduation this June, the recently crowned Miss Fillmore 2014 will head off to the University of Tennessee at Martin where she will lend her running talent and knowledge to the team!

Mendoza, came in to his senior season with no prior experience of running whatsoever but he transformed into a sponge and absorbed every single training session and race tip, learning and understanding race strategy quickly enough to scorch and set the track on fire day in day out and grab attention from his opponents over night. Climbing on to the podium became a necessity as he managed to do it every single meet, no mater the caliber or the competition. Just like Hope, Mendoza ran his best times when it mattered most, earning two medals at the county meet, wining the Tri Valley league championships 1600 meter race and using one final kick to grab the 4th place medal for that event in the finals with a personal best 4:22.04 just missing the all time high school record by a slim 2 seconds. Mendoza will be taking advantage of the local surroundings and familiar faces as he will attend Ventura College next season where he will also compete in Cross Country and Track.

Briceno used a season best in the 110 meter hurdles to finish 7th in the event with a time of 16.13, two spots higher that he was seeded entering the meet. "When the season first started and we began conditioning, Carlos expressed his desire to qualify and compete in the CIF divisional finals. Even though it was very early in the season, when I saw the look of determination in his face and heard the strength and belief in his voice, I knew that very moment I would be coaching a season that would extend all the way into the finals" Briceno is currently a Junior, he will have the opportunity to compete one more year as a Flash, with all the hard work and the foundation that has been built, next season should be one to look out for.

Grove, riding the confidence and momentum of her individual Tri Valley league title, used a strong performance in the prelims with her Life time best of 35'6" in the Girls shot put to advance in to the finals where she posted a solid throw of 34'9.75" and earned the 7th place in the Division Finals. Grove was as reliable as an athlete can be throughout the season, the team knew they could always depend on her to deliver and score the consistent points. Kayla is a Senior and will be attending Humboldt State university where she will continue her successful throwing career.

Peaking at the right time and posting life time best performances when it matters most can be the challenge and it becomes both and art and a science, this group of athletes figured out a way to make that their masterpiece. Once you get into the county meet and CIF meets, you find out that the competition is tough and you've gotta be tougher to survive. At that point the level of competition is always relatively the same, it is than the ability to reach and sustain that level of competition that becomes the difference maker, these athletes all mastered it well and used it to their advantage. GO FLASHES!!!

FHS Track and Field athletes showcase strong performances at CIF Division 4 prelims.

Four Athletes advance to CIF Finals: Two other events narrowly miss it.

CIF Divisional Preliminaries took place at Carpinteria High School this past Saturday May 17th with great performances throughout the day highlighting the efforts, hard work and determination of the athletes. The Fillmore Flashes Track and Field took full advantage of the championship atmosphere and quickly made the center stage their comfort zone. Kiana Hope lead the way with her runner up effort in her heat and third fastest time over all in the division in the girls 3200 meters with a life time best of 11:19.70. Coming off strong performances in the Ventura County Championships and Tri Valley League Championships , Hope remains strong as she has been riding momentum and running with confidence and determination all year long. Kayla Grove continued her dominant form in the Girls shot put and also used a life time best of 35'6' to post the 6th best throw of the day and advance to the finals as well. Grove has improved steadily and has been a consistent force in the girls throws all year long. Jesus Mendoza also earned the 6th fastest time in the boys 1600 meters matching his personal best with a 4:24.21. Mendoza, a first year runner, has ran fast and climbed onto the podium in each and every single meet of the season. For some one who comes in with no running experience prior to his senior year, to place at the invitational portion or the County Championships, win a Tri valley League title and now advance into the CIF finals is beyond impressive; it speaks volumes about his discipline, guts and work ethic. Carlos Briceno, 3rd in his heat and 9th place over all round out the four athletes who will compete at the CIF Finals at Cerritos College this Saturday May 24 with Field events scheduled to begin at 11 am and running events at 1 pm. Briceno expressed his desire and determination to earn the right to compete in the finals this year, earlier in the season and he has achieved it via hard work, consistency and effort. Justin Coert placed 10th in the boys shot put with a solid mark of 44'10.75" and the Boys 4x400 of Demitriouz Lozano, Carlos Briceno, and twin brothers Damien and Dominick Gonzalez also placed 10th over all and second in their heat giving up the win only to the defending state champions Serra High School. Top 9 advance. Damien also competed in the boys high jump, tying for 18th place with a mark of 5'6". Coert and every member of the boys 4x400 are Juniors. They all will come back with the experience, a great foundation and hungrier than ever. Peaking at the right time can be the difference maker and all these athletes have found a way to nail it. Three local girls, Jalynne Magana, Valerie Tobias and Lola Rubalcava are part of the Eagles soccer club U-12 division. They got the opportunity to competed in the Dallas FC international cup the week of April 15 through the 20th and won the championship. All three girls played for Fillmore dream soccer club at the young age of 6 and are now playing at the highest level of soccer in their age group! We're all very proud of these young ladies, at the level they are at right now great things will benefit them in the future! GOOD JOB GIRLS ON REPRESENTING FILLMORE!

Youth Track & Field Varsity Finals were held this past weekend at Moorpark High School. Heritage Valley Blazers had an outstanding 19 qualify for Southern California Co-Conference Championships to be held Saturday May 17th at Santa Barbara City College. One of our very own youth runners, Nevaeh Walla, 12 years of age, broke a 25 year old Youth Girls Ventura County record belonging to her former Coach and former Fillmore runner Maribela "Marty" Aparicio Hernandez. Marty now living in Oregon said: "Congrats to Nevaeh for an amazing 3200m record breaking run! My 13-14 year old youth girls record stood for 25 years. I am happy to see her dedication and hard work pay off and know she will continue to succeed." Marty's record was set back in 1989 with the time of 11:36.9, new record time is now 11:30.6. Good luck to all those runners representing Heritage Valley Blazers at Championships!

Fillmore High school track and field is heading into the CIF competition with the momentum on their side. 1 relay team along with 7 individual events will be representing Fillmore in the Division 4 prelims at Carpinteria High School this Saturday May 17th with field events scheduled to start at 11am and running events at 12pm. The number of qualifiers is particularly impressive in this years revamped league which saw power house Oaks Christian and strong boy Nordhoff emerge into an already competitive Tri Valley League. Heading the Flashes will be Jesus Mendoza and Kayla Grove fresh off their individual league Championship tittles in the boys 1600 and girls shot put respectively. Mendoza, a first year track runner made an appearance on the podium every single time he stepped on the track. He also lead the boys distance medley relay to victory in the highly touted spartan relays. Grove was a dominant force in the throws all year long. Both Mendoza and Grove are the first individual league champions in the Tri Valley League in the past 8 years. Kiana Hope is another threat at a deep post season run, the number 2 seed in the division is on the home stretch of her high school career and gearing to head off to University of Tennessee at Martin on a running scholarship. Other qualifiers are Justin Coert, Boys Shot put. Damien Gonzalez, boys high jump, Carlos Briseno boys 110 meter high hurdles and boys 300 meter hurdles and Damien Gonzales, twin brother Dominick Gonzalez, Demitrius Lozano, and Carlos Briseno joined their forces to earn the at large qualifying time in the boys 4x400. Torrance, CA - American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) is dismayed by the recent allegations that resulted in the arrest of Jose Diaz for alleged sex crimes against a child. Although we have not received any information indicating that the charges involved any AYSO players, we are nonetheless working closely with law enforcement to address this situation. AYSO can confirm that Mr. Diaz has served as an AYSO volunteer since 2005.

It is AYSO’s policy to immediately suspend a volunteer charged with such actions from all AYSO activities pending the outcome of the case. In this situation, we took this step and suspended all AYSO privileges immediately upon being notified of the allegations.

Out of an abundance of caution, we are also reaching out to our players’ families and encouraging them to contact the Santa Barbara County Sheriffs, 1-805-737-4171, directly if they believe that they have any relevant information that may assist in the investigation.

We are saddened any time we learn of a situation like this in any youth sports organization. It is for this reason that AYSO was among the first youth sports organizations to implement a program to raise awareness of creating and maintaining a safe environment for youth players. Key components of this program include educating all volunteers through our nationally recognized Safe Haven training program and a robust background check process.
