Duane Lee Dye, âa Nebraskan Cornhuskerâ, of Fillmore, California passed away at the age of 85 on September 19, 2018
Duane was born to Mildred and Ralph Dye on September 23, 1932 in Stanton, Nebraska. He was raised on the family farm, along with his sister Carol, near Pilger, Nebraska and that farm remains in the family today. Growing up in Nebraska always held a special place in Duaneâs heart, even though he left Nebraska for California in 1957.
When Duane was 17 years old he contracted polio which was sweeping through the Midwest and ultimately, leaving the cold and difficult weather that Nebraska offered was what Duane needed. His determination allowed him to champion the physical difficulties that the polio presented and after attaining his college degree in Accounting, he left Nebraska for California. When he arrived in California he took a job at Wayside Honor Farm in Castaic, working as a supervisor within the Accounting Department. At the same time he was working at the Honor Farm, he was developing income tax clientele which ultimately led to him starting his own insurance agency, Duane Dye Insurance, in Newhall. The area of Newhall was a community of only 15,000 people and it was on the cusp of great growth. Duane Dye Insurance is still a vibrant insurance agency in the Santa Clarita Valley today.
Duane married his wife Linda, in August of 1965, taking on not only a wife but a wife with three children, Lori, Luanne & Larry. Duane and Linda added another sibling, Jef, to the family in 1968. Between running a business and raising a family, Duane was an active member of the Newhall Rotary Club and a member of the Bahaâi Faith. His devotion to his faith helped to guide him through his life and his commitment to Rotary was the foundation of his many years of community service to the Santa Clarita Valley. His greatest desire was to help the world, through Rotary International, by making people aware of the need to eradicate polio throughout the world and helped raise awareness of the issue through the Rotary Polio Plus program. Duane and Linda, through contributions and fundraising, were responsible for inoculating approximately 88,000 individuals throughout the world with the polio vaccine.
Until just a year ago, Duane stayed active in Rotary even while dealing with many health complications caused by advancing age and his physical challenges. The recent months were indeed very difficult for Duane and he bore the burden in a stoic and determined fashion. Upon his death, Duane was surrounded by his family and loved ones. Duane touched and affected all those he met through his example of courage, determination, humility, patience, compassion for others and long suffering. His wise counsel and ability to listen was extraordinary and impactful. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Duane will be buried in a private family graveside service and a celebration of his life is being planned for the near future.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Rotary End Polio Now program in Duaneâs name at the web site https://www.endpolio.org/donate is greatly appreciated by his family.
Jean was born in North Hollywood on April 22nd, 1933 to Ed and Gladys Blakely. She grew up in Raseda, California with her two siblings Robert and Patricia. She loved playing softball, riding her bike, and as a teen loved going to the beach with her friends and sunbathing in the sun. She graduated from Raseda High School in 1951 and started working at Sav-on drug store where she would reconnect with the love of her life, Donald Wokal. They fell in love and went on to marry on July 14th, 1956. Don and Jean moved to Simi Valley where they raised their three children Gary, Lori, and Michael.
As they raised their children, Jean stayed at home and ran an in home daycare. They eventually moved to Fillmore in 1977 where they farmed their citrus and avocado orchard. Don and Jean always loved to travel, be with friends, go dancing, and spend time with their family.
Don and Jean spent most of their life traveling the world. They loved to cruise, travel to different to countries, but they spent most of their time traveling around in their motorhome visiting friends and family and seeing the country. When she wasnât traveling, she was at home âplaying houseâ as she would call it and was in her craft room.
Even as a young girl, Jean was always social, and that part of her life never stopped. She loved going to her club âfat ladiesâ, which she was apart of for 50 years, playing bingo and poker, and shopping at thrift stores, Pic nâ Save and garage sales. She also spent her time volunteering for the Salvation Army and was a member of relay for life, which was important to her being a two-time breast cancer survivor.
Another joy in life was spending time with all of her family. She was well loved by her three children, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Whether it was going to sporting events, camping, road-trips and or just sitting by the pool watching everyone laughing and having fun, she loved sharing all her life stories with everyone and making us laugh with all her dirty jokes.
Jean âGram-maâ will be missed by all her family and friends, but are at peace knowing she left us outside doing what she loved and is now back dancing in the arms of her husband Don.

Roy met Rita Hernandez in Fillmore in 1954 and shortly thereafter they married. Roy settled with Rita in Fillmore and began a family of 6 girls known as the âAvila Girlsâ.

He spent his years living life to the fullest. One of his greatest talents and passions in addition to being a successful landscaper he was also a self-taught musician.
Roy was big on creating new family traditions for all the generations to embrace; these included family camping trips to Lake Tahoe and various regular outings. Family get-togethers at home were always one of his favorites, especially when he would bring out one of his many guitars and play some of his favorite songs for the family.
Roy came from a very humble beginning and accomplished so much within his lifetime. He taught his family that success was defined by how hard you worked and put your mind towards any goal and that having a degree did not always define your success. He took pride in leading by example and giving his family constructive loving feedback to accomplish whatever they had in mind.
God looked around his garden and found an empty space then he looked down upon your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest, I know for a fact Godâs garden is beautiful because he only takes the best.

John was born in Muncie, Indiana. He spent his first years on a small family farm, a place he remembered fondly long after. When the family lost the farm in the Depression, his mother had to support four children through diverse odd jobs in town; her resourcefulness, hard work, and good humor provided the fundamental model for John's life.
John enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, after high school, serving in the Philippines. The Navy indirectly shaped his later life in music and art: he sang in the Blue Jacket Choir at Great Lakes Training Camp and whiled away long duty hours as a pharmacist's mate drawing sketches in the official log book. His later decision to move to California may have stemmed from naval training in San Bernardino, where he was amazed to smell orange blossoms in winter.
After discharge, John majored in art and music at Ball State Teacher's College, in Indiana. Here he met fellow music major Myrtle Minneman, to whom he would be married for nearly 65 years. From Ball State, John took a job teaching high-school band in Alto, Texas, in 1951. Two years later, he moved to the low desert of California to teach band and chorus at Calipatria High School. By 1956, the family had added four sons. Facing this economic imperative, John moved to a better-paying job in Fillmore, once again among orange blossoms. At Fillmore High he switched to art, in effect becoming a one-man art department. This meant not only teaching but providing after-hours help for school plays, Christmas pageants, and proms.
Although both worked full time, John and Myrt developed an unusually rich family life. John led the Bardsdale Methodist Church choir for several decadesâa choir noted for his imaginative selection of choral pieces. John formed a faculty barbershop octet, and he and Myrt gave two-piano concerts for local fund-raising efforts. Meanwhile, John continually painted, sketched, and sculpted for family and friends. Around Christmas and Easter, he created gifts for one and all, including Easter eggs painstakingly painted in miniature. In summer, the whole family always spent two weeks backpacking in the High Sierra. Here there was plenty of time to hike, read, sketch, and stalk the wily golden trout.
John and Myrt were always generous toward others, but they lived within their means, so that John was able to retire several years early. He launched an array of art and music projects: singing in the county master chorale, painting a mural for the Fillmore Museum, sketching a series of postcards for Rancho Camulos, acting in local plays, and traveling to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and elsewhere.
John spent the last 15 years of his life battling muscular discoordination and speech impairment from a cerebral hemorrhage. While these limited him physically, they did not much dampen his spirits; he continued to view life around him with interest and a characteristically sardonic sense of humor until his last days.
John's wife Myrt passed away on April 23, 2013; he is survived by their four sons and families, including nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Bardsdale Methodist Church, 1498 Bardsdale Ave., at 10:00 a.m., July 7.
