On Monday, February 16th the Lady Flashes Basketball team held an awards banquet for the highly successful 2008-2009 girls basketball teams. Numerous awards were given out by Coach Harry Burns. Captain and Co-MVP, Rebecca Herrera, was awarded All-County and All Tri-Valley League Honors along with Captain and Co-MVP trophy. Aimee Orozco also received the Captain and Co-MVP along with 1st Team All Tri-Valley League. Jillian Wilber received the “Most Inspirational” trophy and 2nd Team All Tri-Valley League Honors. Kyla Hernandez garnered the “Most Versatile Player” trophy and 2nd Team All Tri-Valley League. Junior starter, Jazzmin Galvez, received the “Most Improved” trophy and Honorable Mention All Tri-Valley League Honors. All five starters also received the All-County Academic plaques. They were the only starting five in the county to receive this high academic honor. In order to qualify for the County All- Academic Award, each player had to be a starter and have a 3.5 GPA or higher as well. The Lady Flashes starting five all had a 4.0 GPA or better.
Coach Burns also awarded some of his bench players with plaques. Victoria Ayala received the “Sixth Lady Flash Award” for being the first substitute off the bench to enter the game. Nadia Lomeli picked up the “Most Potential Award” for her excellent play in the second half of the season. Yesenia Avila received the “Most Dedicated Award” for the extra time she put in improving her shooting skills after practice was over. Amparo Magana received the “Coaches Award” for never quitting in the conditioning phases of practice despite the fact that she has asthma. All of the eleven players received the Athletic ‘F’ Certificate for their Varsity Letter. Team manager, Christina Bahena, who is doing a video documentary for 2008-2009 season received a personal gift from Coach Burns as did Jaymee Harter for her scorekeeping duties and Taylor Atkins for the statistical input for the CIF Maxprep and for her reporting to the Fillmore Gazette. Last but not least, on behalf of Fillmore Girls Basketball, Mr. and Mrs. Herrera were awarded a signed game ball and a large team picture for their outstanding fundraising efforts.
Dr. Mike Bush, Assistant Superintendent, was awarded a BBQ trophy for his outstanding commitment to the Lady Flashes, for his excellent cooking at the awards banquet, and the unity BBQ before the season began. Also, Dr. Bush was thanked for expediting the upgrading of the Lady Flashes Basketball locker room. Mr. Mark Kandel was awarded a Microphone trophy for being “Voice of the Lady Flashes” for the 08-09 season. The high school administration and the Lady Flashes would like to thank Mr. Rigo Landeros for supplying the tri-tip and chicken from Gelson’s Market, “Chuy” of El Pescador for supplying the salad and beans, and Mr. Ray Tafoya who has supplied many of the trophies for the girls tournament and the awards banquet. He has truly been a stanch and unwavering supporter of Fillmore Girls Basketball. Both of the basketball themed cakes were made by Theresa Martinez.
Coach Kim Tafoya also gave out awards for the JV Girls Basketball team. The “Most Improved” trophy went to Riley Wright, Taylor Dezavala was awarded the “Great Defensive Player” award, and the “Coaches Award” went to Jaynessa Lopez for her all-around hustle and play on the court.

In their league opener the girls beat their arch rivals the Santa Paula Cardinals 12 - 0. With a solid defense behind her, Brianna Martinez pitched a shut out game giving up only 4 hits. Brianna had 2 strike outs while the defense made numerous plays. Not only was our defense on fire, the girls' bats couldn't be stopped. There was a total of 10 hits with Jazmine Alvary and Amanda Alamillo hitting in the park home runs. Kellsie McLain went 2 for 2, Jazmin Alvary went 3 for 4, Erica Rodriquez and Amanda Alamillo went 2 for 4, Heidi Hinklin, Nadia Lomeli, Samone Vega, Kelsey MacDonald And Brianna Martinez all contributed with hits as well.

Fillmore Girls Softball and Boys T-Ball had a great opening day last Saturday at Shiells Park in Fillmore. Scout troop 60933, from Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast, led the flag salute. Past league president’s;Liz Hinklin , Lynn Cole, Jeff Warren , and Heather Swetman , each threw a first pitch to catchers; Victoria Villegas , Sonya Gonzales, Lydiana Duran, and Paula Laureano . The traditional raffle ticket fundraiser awarded $800 in gift cards to lucky league supporters. Top sellers of tickets were- 1st place - Collin Coert 310 tickets, Evelinda Perez 212 tickets, and Madyson Bishop 170 tickets. The players proudly paraded with colorful team banners and wore their new uniforms and caps/visors smbroidered with the 2009 business team supporters : John Holladay /ReMax, Super Seal & Stripe , 7-Eleven Fillmore , Moon Valley Nursery, Harbor Freight Tools, Yanni's Best Burgers, Paladin Principle, State Farm Insurance, Vallarta Restaurant, RK Mechanical ,Rancho Keleje Alpacas, Heritage Valley Air Co., Beylik Farms , Alta Quality Farm Service Inc., Dr. Zimmerman, and Dr. Christine Johnston from Fillmore Family Medical Group, Prism Maritime, A & A Paving, California Mechanical, Knights of Columbus ,and Team Gear Up . The Lady Flashes lost to powerful Pacific Hills in a closely hard fought game of 76-70. Led by senior co-captain Rebecca Herrera with 20 points and three steals, the Lady Flashes gave their all in front of a boisterous sellout crowd in the Fillmore field house. Senior Jill Wilber contributed 18 points, 5 of which were three-pointers. Senior cocaptain Aimee Orozco played her usual outstanding defense on Pacific Hills best player Joanna
Miller. Senior Kyla Hernandez was the Lady Flashes second leading scorer with 15 points and 6 rebounds. The seniors did themselves proud in their final home game for the Lady Flashes and Coach Burns coached his last
high school game.

Public invited to attend the opening ceremonies for girl's softball ,and boy's t-ball this Saturday, March 7th, 2009 at Shiell's Park in Fillmore. My name is Joe Woods and I am the Head Boys Volleyball Coach at Fillmore High School. For our upcoming season, budget cuts in our schools make it difficult for our program to operate. Many schools in our county are spending $5,000-$10,000 and some even more, on a yearly basis for boys volleyball. We know we cannot compete with those numbers year in and year out. However, it is extremely important that our players feel like they are just as important as the athletes at these other schools. I believe in providing our athletes with the best safety equipment and uniforms. I want our athletes to feel good about who they are and where they come from. Because this is a new athletic program at FHS, this program represents a large financial commitment. Therefore, I am extending this invitation for as a community to join-in and support our Boys Volleyball Program for the 2009 season.

During these hard economic times any contribution would help. I’m not asking that anyone do anything outside their comfort zone, as I know many families are struggling. The National High School Rodeo Association- Wrangler Division (NHSRA-WD), the oldest and largest youth rodeo organization in North America, has named Tyler Forsberg, a 8th grader at Fillmore Middle School as a co-captain of the prestigious Wrangler All-Star Rodeo Team for the Wrangler Division. was selected to the team by a vote of fellow Wrangler Division. Forsberg was selected to the team by a vote of fellow Wrangler Division. (WD) Wrangler All-Star Rodeo team members.

The NHSRA-WD and Wrangler created the Wrangler All-Star Rodeo Team in 1 998 to recognize over 1 ,200 high school student athletes across the United States and Canada for their leadership qualities, academic performance and athletic achievements. The WD Wrangler All-Star Rodeo Team is fashioned after the prestigious Wrangler Champion Pro Rodeo Team, which includes rodeo superstars like Trevor Brazile, Joe Beaver, Dan Mortensen, Dustin Elliott, Kelly Kaminski, Will Lowe, and Hall-of-Famer, the late Jim Shoulders. Similar to their professional counterparts, members of the WD Wrangler All-Star Rodeo team wear official Wrangler competition apparel consisting of Wrangler Twenty X shirts embroidered with the team logo and Wrangler competition jeans. The Lady Flashes recently defeated Oak Park High School 70-50 at Oak Park on Tuesday, January 29th. Rebecca Herrera led all scores with 27 points while Jill Wilber chipped in 21 points. Then on January 6th, the Flashes defeated La Reina High School of Thousand Oaks 69-39. Aimee Orozco led all scores with 17 points, Jillian Wilber had 13, and Kyla Hernandez and Tori Ayala had 12 points a piece. Rebecca Herrera had 10 steals in that game while Aimee Orozco pulled down 10 rebounds. The Lady Flashes record now stands at 16 and 6 overall and 6 and 2 in league.
