J.C. Taylor (1927–2022)

J.C. Taylor, age 94, of Long Beach, California, whose growing up years were in Fillmore, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2022 from declining health problems.
J.C. was born on December 4, 1927 in Newport, Oklahoma to James Claudie and Ellen Taylornee Talbot and came to Fillmore, California with his family in 1936.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Eva, sisters: Geneva Rich and Kathy Kappler, and his brother: Boyce. He is survived by his son, Ernest Bruce Taylor (nee Boyer), Daughter-in-Law, Janet Taylor (nee Hocker), grandsons: Elliot Henry Millerd-Taylor and Neal Spencer Millerd-Taylor, and his sister Maxine Holley Merry. J.C. is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was dearly loved by all his family and acquaintances.
J.C. attended Fillmore schools, graduating with the Class of ’45. In his high school years he excelled in several sports, most notably at the time basketball. In one particular competition in the gym he made 76 straight free throws. Someone remarked “that guy is as sharp as a razor!” “Razor,” that was the name his fellow students and many adults continued to call him throughout his life. It was immortalized by a tattoo on his arm. To his family “J” was the name of choice.
J.C. enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and served for 20 years, primarily in the AF Security Forces. In 1952 he married Evangeline Pearl Boyer. They had been married for 66 years at the time of Eva’s death in 2018. With their son, Ernie, they lived at 6 different USAF Bases during his career and J.C. deployed twice on his own. It started at March, AFB, CA; Abilene AFB, KS; Ben-Guerrir AB, French Morocco; Davis-Monthan AB, AZ; Yokota AB, Japan; Malmstrom AFB, MT; Fairchild AFB, WA; U-Tapao AB, Thailand; and, finally Beale AFB, CA. J.C. retired from the Air Force after 20 years and the family settled in Long Beach, CA where he was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 22 years.
J.C. and Eva loved to dance. They participated in square and round dance events in many states, and Canada.
J.C. was also a bowler, starting while in Japan. He learned quickly and became the ABC PACAF bowler of the year in 1960 after rolling a 707 series. He bowled regularly in the Orange County area. He competed in State and National tournaments, and was a regular at the High Roller competitions. He bowled eight 300 games and two 800 series and was admitted into the International Bowling Hall of Fame in 1997. The closure of all bowling alleys in 2019 for the COVID-protocols ended his bowling years.
Being chosen to be a member of the Fillmore Union High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2011, meant a lot to “Razor.” He had very good memories of growing up in Fillmore, especially the high school years and sports. He loved coming back for visits staying with his sister at the Holley ranch, driving around town to see how it had changed and attending the annual Fillmore Alumni dinners.
J’s other hobbies included working any daily crossword puzzle in the newspaper, coin collecting and gardening. He was always a fan of 40’s music, especially Benny Carter.
J.C.-Razor-J was a wonderful and helpful “big brother” to his siblings, a loved husband, Dad, Grandpa, Pops. His remaining family members will miss him very much.

William “Bill” Brewer (1944-2022)

Former Police Chief of Fillmore passes.
William “Bill” Brewer passed away April 5th, 2022 at 18:34 in Roseville, California.
Bill was born June 10th, 1944 in Trona, Ca; moved to Piru, Ca in 1947 and lived on his grandfather's dairy farm until 1950 when he and his family moved to Fillmore, Ca.
He graduated in June of 1962 from Fillmore High and worked several local jobs including being a reserve policeman for the City of Fillmore. Bill's career in law enforcement continued to excel up the ranks. He attended the FBI Police Chiefs' Academy in Virginia February 1974 and became Chief of Police, City of Fillmore, January 1975 until he left in 1986. After leaving Fillmore he and his family moved to Sacramento where he worked for the state until he retired in 2001.
Bill was married to Rayna Lammers but divorced in 1972. In July 1980 Bill married Alicia Deana Ramirez. She passed March 2015 in Sacramento, Ca. They have two children Deanna Louisa (Brewer) Perez and Adan Cristobal Brewer along with two grandchildren, Dominic William Robert Brewer and Marisol Lola Brewer. Bill is also survived by two sisters, Marla Desha and Renee Evans and many nieces/nephews/cousins.
Bill was also affiliated with the Masons of California over 53 years in Fillmore; Santa Paula; and Sacramento area. He received the Hiram award in 2015 and also the 25 year and 50 year anniversary awards.
Viewing is scheduled May 12th, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Perez Family Funeral Home, Central Avenue, Fillmore, Ca. Graveside services will be held at Bardsdale Cemetery May 13th, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.

Arron Renee Diaz (1966-2022)

Our beloved Arron Renee Diaz, 55, passed away on April 24th, 2022 at home surrounded by family at her bedside.
Arron was born on November 30th, 1966 in Orange, California. She was born with Down Syndrome. At the time of her birth, doctors said Arron would not live past 12 years of age and placing her in an institution should be considered as an option. Arron defied those odds and remained at home all of her life enjoying camping, eating out, family road trips and an active life. She competed in gymnastics, running, bowling and ice skating in the Special Olympics. There are many things that are classic Arron; she loved going to COSTCO and having lunch on the outside patio. Arron liked dancing the Macarena, break dancing, listening to Michael Jackson songs and watching Rocky movies. She loved her many dolls and the family dogs Tinkerbell, Cali and Humphrey. Arron also enjoyed relaxing on the couch with Jackson, the ratty twenty year old cat. Most of all, Arron loved her family and hanging out with her Dad!
During the later years, Arron suffered from conditions related to Down Syndrome and dementia. The family would like to thank Arron’s Primary Care Physician Dr. Michael Tushla, Santa Paula Emergency Room/ICU Physicians Dr. Anthony Walls, Dr. Tyler Barr and Dr. Clare Donnelly-Taylor and the many nurses, respiratory therapists and medical staff at Santa Paula Hospital for their compassionate care of Arron. Arron also received compassionate care and assistance from Tri-Counties Regional Center and ARC of Ventura County, where Arron attended for over twenty years until her health began to fail. The Family would like to specifically thank Mary Sawyer and Alice Rivera from ARC for their love for Arron. And, Access TLC Hospice Care nurses Renee and Stephanie for their care of Our Arron in those final hours. And, Arron’s Niece Bethany for the devotion and care she gave to her Auntie Arron for the last 1 1/2 years of her life and specifically the last hours when Bethany remained vigilant with Our Honey’s care.
Arron is the daughter of Richard and Carolyn Diaz of Fillmore, California. She’s also survived by Sisters Brooke Heinrich (Rob) of Flagstaff, Arizona, Julia Fitzgibbons (Daniel) of North Hollywood, California, and Brother Phillip (Cynthia) Diaz of Chula Vista, California. Nephews Jordan Cox (Christine Hendriks) of Scottsdale, Arizona, Joshua Cox of Flagstaff, Arizona, Beckett Fitzgibbons and Chase Fitzgibbons of North Hollywood, California. Nieces Bethany Cox of Fillmore, California, Brynna Cox of Flagstaff, Arizona and Hailee Diaz of Chula Vista, California and many uncles, aunties and lifelong friends who love her very much. Arron was preceded in death by Grandpa Cecelio and Grandma Joan Diaz, Grandma Ruth Dorton and Grandpa Bill Brunett, Uncles Alan and John Diaz and Aunties Janis and Diane Diaz.
Our family misses Arron very much and Arron’s presence in our lives will always be there! A celebration of Arron’s life will be on Sunday, June 12th, 2022 at 12:00pm at the Fillmore Veterans Memorial Building, 511 Second St, Fillmore, California. Thelma Alene Hill (1925-2022)

Thelma Alene Hill passed away Tuesday morning, April 12th, 2022, at home in Alma, Arkansas.
She was born September 28th, 1925 in Dyer, Arkansas, the daughter of Bob and Nellie (Flanigan) Hankins. Thelma attended school in Dyer and Alma high school to the 10th grade. She married William (Bill) Hill on May 13th, 1941 in Ozark, Arkansas.
Thelma loved piecing and quilting quilts, tending to her plants and flowers, fishing and cooking.
She was devoted to her Christian faith. She loves spending time with her family, grandchildren and friends. She was always ready to help others when needed. She did not have any animals but, her door was always open for the grandkid’s animals.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband ; her two sons; Donald and Bobby; three granddaughters, Sheila, Carrie, and Lisa; one great grandson Kevin; five brothers, Bill, Jay, Walter, Fred and Matthew; and two sisters, Peggy Jean and Maude Davis; mother-in-law Beatrice and father-in-law, William Hill; and several nephews and nieces. She is survived by her children; Billy Wayne Hill and wife Barbara of Victorville, California, Larry Wayne Hill of
Kelseyville, California, and Thelma Lois Kozar and Husband John of Alma, Arkansas; 14 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 11 great- great- grandchildren. Also, many nieces and nephews and friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 5th from 4 PM to 8 PM located at the Perez Family Funeral Home 600 Central Ave., Fillmore, CA 93015. Funeral service will be held Friday, May 6th at 9 AM at the Perez Family Funeral Home 600 Central Ave. Fillmore, CA 93015. Burial to follow at Bardsdale Cemetery in Fillmore.

Allen Duane Horn (1943-2022)

Allen Duane Horn “Stretch” was born April 9, 1943 in Santa Paula, California. He died February 16, 2022 in Kingwood, Texas surrounded by his family.
After graduating from Fillmore High School in 1961 Allen joined the Army in 1962 and served 4 years. After his service Allen began working in the Oil and Gas Industry where he worked for over 55 years. He made a lot of accomplishments, owned businesses and was known to the Oil field industry as “Stretch.”
He married his wife Sandy of 57 years in 1965 and they began their life and adventures. They lived in Fillmore and Ventura until 1994 when they moved to Texas and continued their endeavors and adventures up to the day of his passing.
His hobbies were coaching, softball, water skiing, camping, fishing, hunting, traveling, tinkering on cars and around the house. He loved going to the beach but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Allen had a way of making people smile and laugh. If you had the privilege of knowing him then you had the privilege of calling him a Husband, Papa, Dad, Grandfather, Great Grandfather Brother, Uncle or friend.
Allen is survived by his wife Sandra Lynn Horn, his son Todd Horn and his wife Lori, his daughter Cheri Horn Harp and her husband Brian. Also by his second daughter Katie Rentfro and her husband Brad. His grandchildren Brittany Harp Hensley and her husband Clyde, Allie Harp Fox and her husband Jeff, Tyler Horn and his wife Brooke and Ashley Horn. He is also survived by his brother Bob Horn and his wife Pat, his sister Sharon Horn Villasenor and her husband David and his brother Steven Horn and his wife Maranda. Surviving also are 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert & Helen Horn and brothers Jim Horn and David Horn.
Burial was on March 18, 2022 at the Veterans Cemetery in Houston, Texas. A
Celebration of Life will be held at Britt Park (Piru Petroleum Club) 3824 Guiberson Road on Saturday, April 30, 2022 beginning at 11:30AM. Lunch will be served.

Margie Tucker Abbey (1943-2022)

Our beloved Mom and Nana Margie Tucker Abbey passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 24, 2022. She was born February 10, 1943 to Ottie Yarbrough and Clara Richie in San Migal, California. She was a longtime Fillmore resident.
She is preceded in death by Dewey H. Tucker and Earl D. Abbey.
She is survived by a Son Dewey (Les) Tucker and Daughter Teresa Tucker Mills. She had 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Service will be held at Faith Community Church on April 23, 2022 at 11:00am.

Marilyn R. Griffin (1936-2022)

Marilyn R. Griffin, nee’ Vanderbush, loving wife, mother and social leader, passed away April 3, 2022 at Ventura County Medical Center. The cause of death remains to be determined. Marilyn fought hard until the end. She loved life, her family, community, and did not go easily. Marilyn is survived by her beloved husband Jack to whom she was married for over 65 years, daughter Christine, sons James and David, grandchildren Dustin, Rose, Madison, Ellie and Bridget, her sister Gloria and brother Al, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Bud, Cliff, and Vic.
Marilyn was born in May, 1936 in East Los Angeles. She grew up in Monterey Park and El Monte. She was the youngest child of Herman and Martha Vanderbush, whose families emigrated from Europe. Her father was a member of the Civil Air Patrol during WWII, which nurtured Marilyn’s lifelong love of America. Marilyn attended San Gabriel MissionSchoolinitially, and played with the Monterey Park Drum and Bugle Corps during her middle school years.
She met her sweetheart Jack during her first year at Mark Keppel High School. They began dating when Marilyn was 14 and Jack 15. They both knew they were made for each other. Marilyn was the Valedictorian of her class, graduating a year after Jack. They were married at age 20, while Jack attended Cal State Los Angeles and living in Monterey Park. Just prior to Jack’s graduation, Christine came along, and after a work related move to Ojai, she was followed by Jim and David. Marilyn was always a fierce protector of her children and looked after them very well.
After a year in Ventura, the Griffins bought their first home in El Monte in 1964. Marilyn worked outside the home as a bookkeeper and office manager, all the while raising the kids and running the household. She was with American Landscape for over 20 years. In 1971the family moved to Canoga Park, followed by another move three years later to Woodland Hills, where the kids grew up and left home. That prompted Jack and Marilyn to purchase their small farm in Fillmore in 1987, where they reside to this day. They ‘camped out’ in the garage while they renovated the entire house. Marilyn loved their home and was very proud of it. She enjoyed gardening, decorating, home improvements, working with Jack on eBay, doing her work with the Fillmore Women’s Club, and putting on fabulous dinners for her family. She would celebrate every family member’s birthday by cooking their meal of choice.
Marilyn was an extraordinary woman, wife, mother, and friend. We will all miss her wonderful cooking, her smile, selflessness, and her never-ending love.
A remembrance and celebration of her life is being held on April 23, 2022, 10:00 am at The Elks Lodge of Ventura, 2126 Knoll Drive, Ventura, CA 93003.

Verlee Ann Duckett (1929-2022)

Verlee Ann Duckett passed away on March 7th, 2022 in Fillmore, California. She was 92 years old.
Verlee was born on June 20th, 1929 on a farm in Nebraska. Verlee grew up in Fillmore, California after moving from Nebraska at the age of six with her parents, Gilbert and Louise Wilson, and sister, Eileen. While attending Fillmore High School, she met her husband, Douglas, and later raised three children together. Throughout their lives together, Douglas and Verlee enjoyed hosting get-togethers in their home with loved ones. Verlee loved remembering the past while laughing along with family and friends. She would frequently reminisce about walking home from Bardsdale School as she and her sister would stop and climb fruit trees along the way.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Duckett, and sister, Eileen Rose. She is survived by her children, Michael Duckett, Christine Medina, and Janna Cassidy. She is also survived by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Verlee will be loved forever and ever by her family. She will be buried alongside her husband, Douglas Duckett, at the Bardsdale Cemetery in Fillmore, California.

John Arthur Eaton (1932-2022)

After a short battle with cancer, our beloved dad, John Eaton, went home to be with his Savior. He joined his many loved ones already there.
John was born in Bakersfield, CA, and was the eldest child of John and Ruby Eaton. The family moved to the Fillmore area, where John met and married his high school sweetheart, Lynn Maxwell. Three children were born to them: Gary, Leah, and Tami.
John served as a Navy gun captain in the Korean War and came to know Christ during those years.
In 1963, after completing missions’ training, John and Lynn took their young family to the Philippines, where they served as missionaries for 12 years with New Tribes Mission (now Ethnos360). They lived in the mountains of Nueva Viscaya, surrounded by the Kalanguya tribal people, to whom they brought the Good News of Jesus Christ. There is still a strong church among the Kalanguya people.
In later years, John was wed to Claire Caudle of Santa Barbara.
Some of our dad’s (Papa's) greatest joys were taking friends out to eat, flying small planes, meeting new people, fishing, traveling, and telling anyone about the Good News whenever he could bring it into the conversation.
Our Papa was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his younger brother, Tom. He is survived by his sister Sara (Donald) Barlow of Cotton Valley, AZ. He is also survived by his son, Gary (Kellie) Eaton of Newcastle, Australia; daughter Leah (Peter) Humphreys of Ontario, Canada; and daughter Tami (Charlie) Rutledge of Camarillo, CA.
How Papa John loved being a grampa and a great grampa! He is deeply missed by the whole family and leaves behind 12 beloved grandchildren and 33 wonderful great grandchildren.
A celebration of Papa John’s life will be held on March 30th at 2 pm at Chapel City Church (2310 Ventura Blvd, Camarillo, CA).

Hector Martinez Niño (1972-2022)

It is with a heavy heart we announce that Hector Martinez Niño, age 49, was suddenly taken from us on February 24th, 2022 after an unexpected battle with thyroid cancer. He was born on April 24th, 1972 to parents Alberto and Ernestina Niño. He was born in Michoacán, Mexico, and was the oldest of four sons.
He attended Fillmore High School and graduated in 1991. He was a Sheet Metal Leadsman at MW Saussé and Co Inc/VIBREX in Valencia, CA from 2003 until his passing. He was also a Shop Steward for Local 170 Union. He was very respected and dedicated to his trade. He was a leader and fighter for his fellow employees. He was the true definition of someone who loved their job. Words cannot express the passion and pride he had for his job. He loved everyone whom he worked with.
Hector’s interests included spending quality time with family and friends, barbecuing, dancing, traveling, golfing, and serving the Lord. He loved watching his Dallas Cowboys and LA Dodgers play. In his last few years, he grew strong in his faith and relationship with the Lord. He attended church at Canyon Hills Assembly of God as often as he could. His faith and love for God helped him during the hardest of times before his passing.
Everyone who knew him, knew that family was very important to him. He was an amazing husband, wonderful father/stepfather, loving grandfather and loyal brother. He had a great sense of humor, huge heart and selfless until the end.
Hector is survived by his wife Victoria Ramos Niño, daughters Krystal, Ashley and Nataly Niño, stepdaughters Angelina & (Anthony) Arambula and Angelica Juarez, granddaughters Skylar Slack, Sunyia and Saige Person, brothers Alberto, Oscar & (Elvia), and Tony Niño, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends that held a special place in his heart.
He is greeted in heaven by his father, beautiful mother that passed twelve days before him, as well as numerous loved ones.
His loved ones are completely heartbroken and devastated by this sudden loss. Hector will remain in our hearts forever.

Patrick Thomas Roud (1933-2022)

Patrick Thomas Roud passed away February 9th, 2022 at his home in Fillmore, California with family by his side.
Patrick, or Tom depending on how you knew him, was born on January 19th, 1933 in Dublin, Ireland. At the age of 23 he left Ireland for Canada to work as a painter for the Canadian government. At a dance hall in Vancouver he met Maureen Dineen and they married in 1958, having their first child one year later. In 1960 Tom and Maureen immigrated to the United States and settled in Van Nuys, CA. Over the next 12 years Tom worked hard to earn his contractor’s license and establish his painting business. While living in Van Nuys they had four more children. In the little free time Tom and Maureen had they belonged to a square dancing club and Tom raised canaries in their backyard. In 1972 Tom moved his family to Fillmore. He continued his painting business and became a self taught weekend rancher raising animals and growing oranges and avocados. Shortly after moving to Fillmore, Tom discovered a new hobby of raising pigs. He enjoyed sharing his time and knowledge with local 4-H clubs. He was so proud when the kids did well at the county fair with one of his pigs.
In 1976 Tom became a United States Citizen. Throughout the years Tom made many trips back to Ireland but was always happy to return to his "little piece of heaven" in Fillmore. Tom rarely stayed still and usually had some sort of project started. He always had a garden and mostly grew his plants from seeds. He loved spending time on the ocean fishing, regardless of the fact that he usually got seasick. He also enjoyed scuba diving and telling stories about what creatures he had seen. During the summer he would take his family on long road trips or camping at Leo Carrillo and Montana De Ora State Beaches. Tom was quite the story teller and singer of Irish songs. You didn't have to ask him twice to tell a joke, sing a song, or tell a story about his younger days in Ireland.
Tom always saw the potential in each new day. One of the first things he would ask is “ what’s on the agenda for today?” His passing has left a void in our hearts but we are comforted by the beautiful memories he made with us.
Tom is survived by brothers Sam Roud (Noreen) and Noel Roud (Zaida), his son and daughter in law Daniel and Deborah Roud, daughter and son in law Kathleen and Andrew Aguirre, his grandchildren Benjamin (Dana), Noah, and Brooke Aguirre and Ronnie Duenas, great grandson Liam Aguirre, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his wife Maureen, daughter Anne, sons Thomas and Brian, his parents, sister Margaret Hughes, Eva Roud and brother Brendan Roud.
Services will be held March 17th, Rosary at 10:00 am and Mass to follow at 10:30am at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Santa Paula with burial to follow at Bardsdale Cemetery.

Helen Jean Cowell (nee Abreu) (1933-2021)

Helen was born in a small town near Rangoon, Burma. She was the only daughter amongst seven brothers.
Her father, Isaac Francis Abreu, was a Deputy District Superintendent of Burma Police. He was awarded the King’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service by King George V. in 1932.
Helen’s mother was Lilian May Abreu (nee Sherard). She kept her children together after Isaac was captured and died during WWII and the Burmese civil unrest.
After independence, Helen’s family relocated to the newly created nation of Pakistan.
She attended boarding school at the Jesus and Mary Convent school for girls in Murree which still exists today at the foot of the Himalayas in Punjab, Pakistan.
After graduation from high school, Helen married Peter Cowell, an Army Captain stationed in the highlands of Pakistan. He too was from Burma.
They were together for 70 years. They had two children, a daughter, Janice Lillian and a son James Henry Cowell.
Their young family immigrated to the United States entering New York Harbor April 14th, 1959 on the ocean liner the Queen Elizabeth. Helen was 25 years old and had a 3 and 6 year old.
While raising her young family and working part time, Helen pursued higher education. Starting at Citrus Junior College on to Cal Poly, Pomona, University of Washington and finally earning her Masters in Far Eastern Studies at Claremont Graduate University. She went on to obtain a teaching credential at University of California, Santa Barbara.
She was a teacher for 28 years, first at Santa Clara High School then at Sespe Elementary, Fillmore where she spent 25 years teaching 5th grade. She had many wonderful students and colleagues who became dear friends.
Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her beloved stepfather, Basil Disney, as well as her son, James, and five brothers: Herbert, Patrick, Tony, Derek and David.
Her survivors include her brothers in England, Dave Disney (Grace) and Colin Abreu (Yvonne).
Helen’s greatest joy was being a grandmother to Emily (Ed) De La Llave and Kevin (Tracy) Waldron.
She considered it a blessing to have her son in-law Mike Waldron and nephew, Mark Abreu close to her.
As a mother’s heart has no limits Helen’s even greater joy were her great grandchildren, Peter and Julia De La Llave and Finley and Pippa Waldron. She loved watching them play in her garden, feeding and fussing over them.
Helen considered herself blessed to have kept in close touch with her many Abreu and Cowell nieces and nephews around the world in England, Bahrain, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand as well as those closer to home in the States. They all loved to eat her authentic curries and burmese dishes. One of her greatest pleasures was to cook for others. She was well travelled having visited six continents. No matter which hemisphere or continent, she marveled at the night sky and enthusiastically named each constellation!
The family extends our highest praise and infinite gratitude to Helen’s devoted caregivers, Bing Compendia and Beth Ilano. Additional thankfulness to Michelle Dore, RN and the staff at TLC Hospice.

Peter James Cowell (1926-2021)

Peter was born in Maymo, Burma a city just north of Mandalay. Peter’s autobiography, self published in 1999 described an idyllic childhood as the youngest of eight siblings.
This all changed when WWII came to Burma December 1941 when Peter was 15 years old. He and his elder brother, Alfred, escaped by walking from Burma to India across the Chindwin River route. Unfortunately his father, James Henry Cowell, died on the trek through the northern Hukwang Valley-Patkai mountain route. Peter’s mother, Mildred Cowell (nee Garnier) and her six daughters had evacuated earlier while airplanes were still transporting women and children to India.
As refugees, Peter and his brother found temporary shelter at the Loreto Convent in Calcutta. Although he did not know it at the time, a young nun who later in life would be known as Mother Teresa was also there as a Loreto sister.
After reuniting with his mother and sisters in Musoori, India, Peter was sent to boarding school at St Joseph’s Academy in Dehra Dun which is north of Delhi near the Nepal/China borders. After high school graduation he joined the British army in India. After officers training he was assigned to the Gurkha Regiment about the same time as the American and British forces began reclaiming Burma. Peter was posted to Rangoon as a Lieutenant in the 4th Burma Regiment under the command of the British Empire.
After the war and his family scattered, Peter, age 22, found opportunity with the newly created Pakistan Army, eventually reaching the rank of Bridgade Major in the Artillery.
He was stationed in Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Kashmir, and Karachi. While stationed in Quetta he visited a Burma family who had a 17 year-old daughter, Helen Abreu. As a young girl Helen used to ride the train to school with Peter’s nieces in Rangoon. In high school she had seen the boy from Burma, Peter’s pictures in the newspapers winning diving and boxing championships for the Army.
Helen and Peter were married Dec 29, 1951 in Quetta.
In 1959 at age 33 with a wife, two young children and $500, Peter immigrated to America. Their journey included sailing through the Indian Ocean and Suez Canal past the Rock of Gibraltar to England then on to New York. After traveling by train across the entire United States the family arrived at the downtown Los Angeles Union train station and settled in El Monte, California.
Peter found work as a book keeper during the week and unloaded train cars on the weekend for $2/hr. He took classes at UCLA and pursued his education, passed the CPA exam and landed a job with Coopers & Lybrand then at Arden Mayfair. At age 46 years Peter left the corporate world to build his own accounting practice in Fillmore, CA.
Peter and Helen bought their home in Bardsdale on 10 acres of Valencia oranges. All his family and friends loved visiting their home and observed that the landscape with the Sespe Mountains reminded them of his hometown, Maymyo.
In 1994 his sisters and nieces journeyed to Fillmore for a Cowell Family Reunion. It was the first time in 50 years the siblings were all together. His daughter and grandkids still refer to those few weeks as the time of “the ancient ones” because of all the family stories, seeing the siblings singing, laughing, teasing, cooking and eating were a gift.
Peter and Helen loved America. They had both lost their fathers and their homes as children. They were so proud to be citizens of their new homeland. A country whose people welcomed them with generosity. A place with abundance and opportunity.
Peter was preceded in death by his son, James in 1998. By Helen 2 months before his own passing. And by all his sisters: Myrtle in England, Minna, Gertrude, Olga and May in Australia, and Elvera in New Zealand and by his brother Alfred in West Covina, CA.
Peter is survived by his daughter, Jan (Mike) Grandchildren Emily (Ed) and Kevin (Tracy) and great grandchildren Peter, Julia, Finley and Pippa.
Over the years Peter’s indulgences included Burma cheroots, Ballantines, Dry Sack sherry, Cuban cigars, mini Palmiers and lots and lots of ice cream. After retiring he was dedicated to going to the gym, riding his exercycle and walking the treadmill, five days a week without fail. He enjoyed indulging his wife’s love for travel. They enjoyed dancing at weddings and parties and loved listening to all the “old music” from the 40’s.
Internment was Dec 29, 2021 at Bardsdale Cemetery, Fillmore, CA which was their 70th wedding anniversary.

Bianca Lizette Tapia (1989-2022)

It is with heavy heart we announce that Bianca Lizette Tapia was tragically taken from us in a car accident on March 2, 2022. Because of the senseless act of a drunk driver, her life ended in the blink of an eye. Our family is completely heartbroken and devastated. We know things will never be the same from this immense and painful loss.
Bianca was a kind, loving, intelligent woman. She lit up any room she walked in and her energy was always beaming through her every smile. Bianca had always found different ways of expressing herself. She enjoyed painting, dancing, singing karaoke, and playing trivia games and never hesitated to ask everyone to join her. She also loved cooking for her family and friends, her home cooked meals always made you full with love. Bianca was always such a strong, selfless and beautiful soul. We are so blessed to have shared 33 wonderful years with her, full of laughter, warm embraces and everlasting love that will be greatly missed by her family and friends. We will never forget how brilliant her soul shined through to luminate everyone around her and, most special of all, how much she inspired everyone to love unconditionally and endlessly.
Bianca was born in Ventura on January 8, 1989 and grew up in Fillmore, graduating Class of 2007 from FHS. She received her Associate's Degree at Ventura College and later her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from CSU Channel Islands. She worked as a Community Skills Instructor in Thousand Oaks serving individuals with developmental disabilities for 5 years, and loved her job. Bianca was a resident of Ventura and Fillmore for many years. She had everything going for her; she had goals of traveling all over the world and trying different things. Bianca had dreams and aspirations for her bright future and to have her life taken so tragically and so soon is just devastating and unfathomable. Her spirit will continue in legacy through her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her brother Ismael Uriostegui Jr.; her grandmother, Bertha Tapia; her uncle Felipe Tapia; her aunts Sylvia Romero, Graciela Romero, Rose Marie Mendez and Rosa Romero. She is survived by her mother Nancy Tapia, her father Ismael Uriostegui, Sr., her sister Gissel Uriostegui, her brother Erik Uriostegui; step sister Beyance, step brother, Ulysses; her uncle Frank Tapia and aunt Lisa Tapia; many cousins, Susy, Patty and Ramiro, Victor Mendez; Krystle, Frankie, Desiree, Mariah and Anthony Tapia; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Lastly her boyfriend Hector Molina with whom she had 2 dogs Kobe and Benji with. Thank you to all the families and friends that have helped during this difficult time. Memorial services will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1048 Ventura St, Fillmore, CA, at 10am on Friday, March 25, 2022. Interment will be held at Bardsdale Cemetery, Fillmore, CA. Daniel M. Montañez (1938-2022)

Daniel M. Montañez 84, long time resident if Fillmore, went to the presence of the Lord on February 23, 2022 surrounded by his beloved wife and children. He was born on January 3, 1938, in Calera V.R. Zacatecas, Mexico. At the age of seventeen, he met his wife Antonia Hernandez, married in 1956 and had three children. In 1966, as a Bracero, he migrated his family to the small town of Fillmore where he raised his family. He worked for F & P Growers for 14 years and later retired from Dick Elkins Trucking. His favorite thing to do was spending time with his grandchildren, especially watching them compete in sports, he also enjoyed taking long walks, going to the gym, and playing with his dog Manchas.
As an only child he was incredibly grateful to be blessed with a big family. Now he has reunited with his parents Jose and Antonia Montañez.
He is survived by his wife Antonia H. Montañez of 66 years, daughter Esperanza M. Hurtado (Alferdo), son Jose H. Montañez (Bernalda), daughter Angelica M. López (Ricardo). He had 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.
Visitation will be held March 9, 2022, from 3pm – 9pm at Perez Family Funeral Home at 300 Central Ave., Fillmore, Ca, 93015. Rachel Suzanne Chavez-Gonzalez (1984-2022)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Rachel Chavez-Gonzalez on Monday, February 14th, 2022. Rachel was born on February 14th, 1984, to the loving parents of Jennifer Crockett and Adrian “Little Man” Chavez. Rachel was raised in the city of Fillmore, where she attended school and would go on to cheerlead and play softball. Rachel graduated from Fillmore High School in 2002 and set her sights for Oklahoma, where she would eventually go on to get married and raise a family.
Rachel had an energy that was contagious. She loved making people laugh – but more than anything, she loved being a mother. Rachel embraced motherhood, a commitment to raising smart, adventurous, and loving boys with her husband, Jorge. Along with being a loving mother and wife; Rachel enjoyed reading, cooking, and, at any chance she had – singing to Mariah Carey at the top of her lungs. She loved watching marathons of I Love Lucy, while snacking on pickles dipped in sugar, and learning dance routines. Rachel was her own person, who followed her own set of rules. On the surface, she always appeared to be tough. But underneath, she was genuine, goofy, witty, and fun. She will be remembered for the unconditional love she had for her family and the loyalty she had for her closest friends.
She will be greatly missed by all who have had the privilege of having her in their lives. Rachel is survived by her husband Jorge Rodriguez, and their sons; Devon, Bently, and Xavier. She is also survived by her mother Jennifer, step-parents Sylvia and Timothy, grandparents: Dolores “Lola” Chavez, Jerry and Linda Crockett, and her siblings: Selina, Angela, Adrian, Aaliyah—and countless uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her daughter Jordan, her brother Joshua, her father Adrian, and her grandfather Adon.

Juan De La Rosa (1929-2022)

Born January 27th, 1929, in Colton, CA. Passed away January 25th, 2022, at 92 years old, 2 days before his 93rd birthday. He was born to Pedro and Margarita De La Rosa who were in the Bracero program.
Shortly thereafter, during the depression, the family moved back to their hometown of Jamay, Jalisco, Mexico, where dad and younger brother Martin helped their father carry water to homes and other hard labor to make ends meet. He excelled in school up to the 6th grade. Eventually, in his teens, the family moved back to the U.S. and he began taking correspondence courses to earn his GED in his spare time when not working in the citrus fields. The family made their way back to Mexico where he set up a mom-and-pop store for his mom in the family home. He would later go into trucking, hauling construction materials with a 1953 GMC dump truck that he bought in the U.S. using mostly his money for a down payment. It was during that time that dad met his beloved wife, Maria who blessed him with eight beautiful children. After the fourth child, he left everything behind and brought his growing family to Rancho Sespe, near Fillmore, where he was a field worker for several years.
Eventually, he began taking correspondence courses in automotive technology and began servicing automobiles for friends and relatives. Dad was thrifty and smart with his money to the point of being criticized for being frugal. However, each of his children can testify that those were the most wonderful, God-given days of their lives! When his boys asked for bikes, he came home with a box of parts and several frames and showed them how to build their own! This seemingly show of frugality which may have yet been another act for criticism, was a HUGE calculated move by dad to help his boys develop an interest in technology, which led to careers in Automotive Training and Education, Government Fleet Vehicle Repair and Oilfield Facility Management, Computer Engineering and Design and Farming Equipment Repair and Maintenance. Dad was also tireless in helping and encouraging his girls to start their own business from financing a beauty shop for one and helping each one to purchase their home.
Because of years of careful management of the family's resources, he was able to save and buy his first property, his house. Soon after, with mom's encouragement, dad bought an investment property in Ventura consisting of 18 cottages, which helped each of his children at the start of their own families, as each had a cottage available to them if they chose. This property also taught his kids the skills needed to manage and maintain residential properties, skills being utilized to this very day.
Dad was always looking for investment opportunities and found one at Wagon Wheel Groceries in Oxnard. As a family-established business, he and mom operated a community store where customers would come specifically to sample her home-made burritos, meeting a lot of good local people along the way. This was a springboard to his next endeavor.
After his retirement, dad leased a gas station on Hwy 126 near Central Ave in Fillmore. He and several of his kids, nephews, and nieces ran it until new underground storage tanks were required. Since owners would not help with the cost, he decided to end the lease and founded the present De La Rosa Auto Repair facility in Fillmore. His life-long dream finally came true the day he stepped into HIS shop and was able to re-build it from the ground up. When not at home going through every piece of mail that came to him, you could always find him there almost every day until the end of his life.
Dad will be remembered for his big heart! Being the first to move here in his family as well as in his in-laws, he helped every single one migrate here, always making his home available to them. Although he helped anyone who asked, he could be very hard, but fair! He did not spare the rod as his boys can attest, especially for ditching school, and each of his boys acknowledge they deserved every single punishment. WE MISS YOU DAD!
Juan was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Margarita De La Rosa, sisters, Rosario De La Rosa and Cruzita Ramos, brothers, Martin, Agustin, and Alphonso De La Rosa.
Juan is survived by his beloved wife Maria De La Rosa. Sons, Bill (Anna), Alex (Susan), John (Christina), Peter (Elvia). Daughters, Linda (Steve), Martha (Jess), Margaret (Chris), Maria (Richard). 21 grandchildren and 18 great - grandchildren and another great grandchild on the way. Sister Elisa Magallon and Brother Gamaliel De La Rosa including numerous nephews and nieces.
A Rosary will be recited at 9:30am on Tuesday, February 15th, 2022 with a Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 10:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1048 West Ventura Street, Fillmore, California. Interment to follow at Bardsdale Cemetery, 1698 South Sespe Street, Fillmore, California.

Marlene “Marla” Cervantez (1946-2022)

Marlene "Marla" Cervantez was born November 24th, 1946 in Fillmore CA, and joined her loved ones in Heaven on January 15th, 2022.
While attending Fillmore High School, she met the love of her life, Joe Cervantez and married in 1966. They spent 55 wonderful years together and had four beautiful children.
Marla enjoyed trips to Vegas, Chumash, Bingo, Flashes sporting events, and trips to the Eastern Sierras. She enjoyed scratching scratchers, watching The Price is Right, and Dodger Baseball. She also loved spending time with her family, whether it be barbequing, parties, family get togethers, or just sitting and listening to her scanner. 10-4.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Modesto and Maggie Cardona, Mother in-law Mary Zuno, sisters Ruby Riesgo, RoseMarie Gallardo, Madeline Davis, brother Robert Cruz, and brother in-law Jeff Moreno.
She is survived by her husband Joe Cervantez and children Joe (Missy) Cervantez, Denise (Jesse) Camarillo, Liz (Kevin) Hinklin, Dave (Brenda) Cervantez, grandchildren, Ren, Trevor (Natalie), Lauren (Marco), Dustin, Nicole, Heidi, Kaylee, Jason, and great-grandchildren Aleana, Naleah, and is expecting her third great-grandchild in August. She is also survived by her siblings Ronnie (Helen) Riesgo, Norbert (Stella) Riesgo, Bill (Annette) Cardona, Sam (Genevieve) Cardona, Angie (Steve) Appleton, Gloria "Chachi" (Jimmy) Ledesma, Barbara Moreno, and numerous Nieces and Nephews.
On behalf of her family we would like to thank the staff at UCSD Medical Center (Hillcrest) where she received her transplants, Dr.Hakansson and staff, and to all our family and friends who supported us along the way.

Laura May Knutson (1941-2022)

Laura May Knutson, age 80, of Bakersfield passed away Monday, January 17th, 2022.
She grew up in Fillmore, California and was a valedictorian graduate of Fillmore High School in 1959. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, road trips in the family motorhome and camping with friends and family. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family.
Laura is preceded in death by her parents Chester and Gennave Kruse, and two brothers, Marvin and Roy Kruse. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dave; daughter, Sharla Frank and sons, David Knutson, Lee Knutson and Christopher Knutson.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony for Laura will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 3rd, 2022 at Church of Angels, 600 East Pleasant Street in Santa Paula, California. Interment to follow at Bardsdale Cemetery, 1698 South Sespe Street in Fillmore, California.

Alan Daniel Johnson (1927-2021)

Alan Daniel Johnson, of Fillmore, CA, died peacefully on December 13th, 2021. He was 94 years of age. Al spent much of his childhood in Scotia, New York and enlisted in the Navy during WW2. He graduated from Syracuse University with a BA in English, Journalism.
Al’s professional life in journalism began as a reporter for the Capitol District Gazette in Schenectady, New York. It was during this time he met and married Dorothy Defazio Johnson, his wife of 53 years.
The bulk of his professional life was with the General Electric Company in Schenectady and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as Senior Publicist for the Missile and Space Program. The family relocated to the suburbs of Philadelphia in 1958, where Al and Dot raised five children. The family spent every weekend skiing in the Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania, where Al volunteered on the ski patrol and life-long friends were made. The wider influence resulted with several of his children and grandchildren achieving highly competitive and professional success within the ski industry.
In 1972 the family moved to Manchester Vermont, purchasing a sporting goods store and Bed & Breakfast. The move to ski country was Al’s dream where he joined the ski patrol at Bromley Mountain. In retirement, they moved to Venice, Florida and enjoyed many years in a warmer climate. Al returned to Maine for some years where he participated in Maine Handicap Skiing at Sunday River, well into his 80’s and eventually, to California where he reunited with the youngest family members.
The three passions that defined Al were his love of reading/writing, skiing and a good adventure! Al remained active in retirement reporting for local newspapers and volunteering for Literacy programs. The YMCA in Venice, Florida acknowledged his reporting of their program to help promote literacy in parents of young children.
Al was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Defazio Johnson; his parents, Ernest Elden Johnson and Esther (nee Thunborg) Johnson. He is survived by his children, Alan Daniel Johnson and his partner, Susan Shay, Kristin Esther Johnson and her husband David Beam, Nissa Johnson Avery and her husband Mark, Karin Johnson Hardy and her partner Don Campbell, Erik Charles Johnson and his wife Mary; as well as his grandchildren, Anders Johnson, Alyssa Jonson, Gabriel Johnson, Aaron Landry, Mathew Beam, Ryan Beam, Lars Remsen, Christopher Remsen, Greg Hardy, Colton Hardy, Jessie Hardy, Nicholas Johnson, Katherine Johnson; as well as his great grandchildren, Theodore Johnson, Jackson Landry, Cohen Landry, Charlotte Beam, and Finn Remsen.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Fillmore Country Club, a senior community, for the kindness and care they provided Al in his final days.
A family service will be held this summer in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, Maine.
