When the alpacas came to FMS we learned many things. Here are a few of them. One fact we learned is that the white spot gene is fatal and 9 out of 10 alpacas with that gene would be deaf. We also learned alpacas have 74 chromosomes. Also we learned that having a white fleece is a dominant trait. Alpaca breeders breed for the softest microfibers in their fleece. Alpacas are a member of the camel family.

Alpacas also have some protection strategies. One of them is they spit when threatened. Alpacas also have two sharp nails on their toes so that they can climb up the mountains in Peru and Chile. Alpacas also take turns sleeping throughout the night to avoid predators. Alpacas have thick fleece to stay warm. Those are some protection strategies of alpacas.

Our favorite part of meeting the alpacas was being able to pet them and feed them. We also liked the feeling of their fleece because it felt like a marshmallow. Another part we liked was that we got to feel the products produced from the alpaca fleece. Some of the products we got to touch were socks, scarves, and beanies. We want to thank Jared Warren and his family for bringing their alpacas to Fillmore Middle School for the entire day. Every seventh grade student had the opportunity to learn about alpaca genetics. ALPACAS RULE!!!

STUDENT INFORMATION

1. MRS. GODFREY’S WORD OF THE WEEK! This week’s word is “aplomb”. If you can define it and spell it correctly when asked, you will win a pizza delivered to you on Friday during your lunch.
2. SCHOOL RULES – Sexual Harassment/Sexual Battery – Federal & State laws make sexual harassment illegal, whether it involves boys, girls, opposite-sex or same-sex situation. Some examples of sexual harassment are calling out obscene names, passing dirty notes, calling someone at home, telling dirty stories, staring at a person’s body in a sexual way, purposely bumping into someone or standing in their way so they can’t pass, writing graffiti or starting rumors about someone’s sexual orientation or behavior. Touching someone in a sexual way (pinching, touching or grabbing) is considered sexual battery. This is serious and the harasser can be arrested by police and expelled from school.
3. MENTOR PROGRAM – January is “National Mentoring Month” and we are asking all Littles/Mentees to stop by the Mentor Room during break or lunch to design a thank you card for your Big/Mentor. New members are always welcome and you don’t need to have a scrapbook to join. Just try to remember to bring your photos, but please come either way. Glue donations are needed but not required. See you there!
5. DO YOU PLAY SPORTS? Would you like to one day be a magician, stand up comic, or slam poet? Do you collect something interesting? Is there an activity you put a lot of time into? GATE will be hosting a Hobby Fair very soon. If you have a cool hobby or collection that you would like to share, please join our next meeting hosted by GATE which will be held on TOMORROW after school in room B-1. All who would like to participate in the hobby fair are well to attend. Unfortunately so far, no 7th or 8th graders have sent representatives to our meetings. But don’t worry, it’s not too late! Students in the mentor program can come and sign up for the LA Zoo field trip which takes place on Monday, Feb. 15th. Space is limited. Pick up permission slips in the Mentor Room.
4. SCRAPBOOKING CLUB will meet every Wednesday during 1st lunch in room B-1. Please bring your lunch and come enjoy working on your scrapbook.
If you have a cool hobby or collection that you would like to share, please join our next meeting hosted by GATE which will be held on Thursday, Jan. 14th after school in room B-1. All who would like to participate in the hobby fair are well to attend. Unfortunately so far, no 7th or 8th graders have sent representatives to our meetings. But don’t worry, it’s not too late! Just make a plan to attend the Jan. 14th meeting so that we can open the hobby fair to all grade levels.
6. GRADE CHANGES - If you need a grade changed, it must be done in writing by your teacher and given to Mrs. Brock.
