Tryout practice will start April 19th-April 22nd and tryouts will be held on Friday, April 23rd. You must have a permission slip in order to participate in tryouts. Parent meeting will be held April 19th at 6:30 in the high school gym. If you have any questions, please call Ms. Tafoya at the high school.

3. THE MIGRANT EDUCATION ANNUAL SPEECH & DEBATE TOURNAMENT was held at Oxnard High on Saturday, March 20th. Our FMS team participants prepared three speeches for the competition and prepared three extemporaneous speeches on the day of the competition. Congratulations to the entire Migrant Speech Team for their hard work and dedication. The following students were winners and brought home trophies: 6th Grade – Yulissa Fregoso; 1st place prepared speech, 1st place extemporaneous speech. 7th Grade – Viridiana Quintana; 1st place prepared speech, 1st place extemporaneous speech. 8th grade – Banely Arevalo; 2nd place prepared speech. In addition from among the 500 participants, a champion trophy was awarded for the highest overall score. That trophy went to our own Viridiana Quintana! Congratulations team and a special thank you to Mrs. Ramos for leading them to success!

Community members and FMS families are ALWAYS WELCOME to the Home of The Bulldogs! Please join staff for our monthly Meet and Greets in our Parent Center, held the last Friday of every month. FMS is hosting its March Meet and Greet this Friday, March 26th at 7:30 a.m. The atmosphere is casual, and provides a great chance to follow coffee, pastries and conversation with a walk through of classrooms with a counselor or administrator.
What is great about FMS will continue to be great…and we will continue to improve each year. We as a staff need our parents and community to help keep us moving forward. The Tobacco Bus is provided through Ventura County Public Health Tobacco Education to our 6th graders in Ventura County. Carolyn Consoli and Kim O’Neil tireless share the “Horrors” of tobacco to prevent future tragedies such as mouth and throat cancer, lung cancer, emphysema and even death!

This program supports our youth making positive/healthy choices in their lives and how to use this information to help their family members as well, even if they have already started using and are addicted to the nicotine. There are over 4,000 chemicals in a cigarette. Some of those chemicals are poisons such as arsenic, insecticides, formaldehyde and of course the by-product of smoke, carbon monoxide.

Here are three important phone numbers that are shared during the Tobacco Bus tour:
· 1-800-5ASK-4-ID, If someone sees a store clerk selling to a minor, they can make an anonymous call to report the illegal sale of tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco).

· 1-800-NO-BUTTS, This is the California Smokers Help Line which is a free service to help people quit smoking.

· 201-STOP, The Ventura County Public Health offers free classes to anyone in Ventura County to help them stop smoking. They also provide “free” nicotine patches to help those going through withdrawals.

2. SCHOOL RULES – Sexual Harassment/Sexual Battery – Federal & State laws make sexual harassment illegal, whether it involves boys, girls, opposite-sex or same-sex situations. Some examples of sexual harassment are calling out obscene names, passing dirty notes, calling someone at home, telling dirty stories, staring at a person’s body in a sexual way, purposely bumping into someone or standing in their way so they can’t pass, writing graffiti or starting rumors about someone’s sexual orientation or behavior. Touching someone in a sexual way (pinching, touching or grabbing) is considered sexual battery. This is serious and the harasser can be arrested by police and expelled from school.
3. ATTENTION ALL 8th GRADERS – Do you want to say goodbye to your 8th grade friends? Do you want to wish them well going to the high school or just tell them they are special? Six staff members from Fillmore Middle School (FMS) presented at the California League of Middle Schools Conference. This annual conference was held in Sacramento on February 27 -29. FMS was one of 100 presenters over the three day weekend. Representing the school in the presentation were Todd Schieferle, Tricia Godfrey, Jennifer Beal, Scott Carroll, Anna Morielli, and Jenny Lindemann.

The annual conference brings middle school staff from around the state. High quality professional development remains the key to helping teachers and instructional leaders improve student learning. The conference is a way to connect teachers and administrators through a variety of presentations that are addressing challenges impacting California’s middle schools. It allows attendees to listen to practitioners who have created useful ideas, strategies and tools to improve student achievement at their school.

FMS was selected to present an innovative intervention strategy the staff designed to improve instruction. Their advisory period is used to address students’ needs by providing additional instruction in key academic areas. It also provides enrichment activities for those students who are meeting grade level standards. This new strategy is one of several new approaches this collaborative staff has created over the past two years as they continue to meet the needs of their students.

Those attending the conference presentation were impressed with the design of the model, with several asking questions and asking for more information. Several also indicated they would love to come to Fillmore to see the advisory model in action. All of Fillmore/Piru should be proud that one of their sites was asked to present at this prestigious conference. More importantly, kudos go out to the entire staff for their willingness to search for innovations that will increase student achievement.

1. PARKING LOT CLOSURE INFO – Please plan ahead. The FMS parking lot will be closed on the morning of Friday, 3/12 for our 8th grade Civil War Living History activity. There will be no cars allowed to park in the parking lot that morning. There will be one loop in the gate and out of the gate to drop off students. If you can drop your son/daughter off before the stop sign at First Street and have them walk in to school, this will ease congestion into the school.
