One of the most active community groups working with Fillmore High School every year is the Fillmore High School Athletic Booster Club. This group supports our pep squad as well as athletics for all 15 athletic teams featured at the High School level.

The F.H.S. Athletic Booster Club distributes over $30,000+ towards sports at FHS each year. Through their various activities, fundraisers and sporting events they are able to raise money that in turn, helps us to support all the athletic teams.

Without an active and support driven Booster Club we cannot improve, introduce or even maintain existing athletic programs offered at F.H.S. So how do you help? Even if it’s just a “Member-At-Large”, please consider serving as a Booster Club board member for the 2010/11 school year. An election to select next year’s board will be held. Monday, May 3rd at 6:30pm, at the Fillmore High School Library.

Fillmore High School Swim Team will be hosting the 2010 Frontier League Swimming Championships at the Fillmore Aquatic Center. Prelims will be held on Wednesday, May 5th and Finals will be held on Friday, May 7th. Meet begins at 2:00 PM on both days.

There will be six high school swim teams competing in JV girls and boys and Varsity girls and boys events. Frontier League schools include Fillmore, Carpinteria, Nordhoff, Santa Clara and Villanova. Cate School will be participating at Prelims as a guest school. Come support the Fillmore High School swim team at this very exciting and fast swim meet. There is likely to be many CIF time standards achieved.

The Lady Flashes varsity team had a split week with 1 win and 1 loss. On Wednesday, April 14th they had a big win against Channel Islands beating them 10-1. Kianna Tarango will take the win on the mound giving up only 1 hit and pitching a shut out. Lilah Duran finished things up doing a great job of closing the game. Our offense was pretty spread out for this game with Samantha Wokal hitting 2 for 2 with a double and 2 RBI's and Chellie Arrequn having a double. Heidi Hinklin, Amanda Allamillo, and Kelsey MacDonald all had siingles with RBI's while Nadia Lomeli and Tori Perez contributed with singles also. The next day Thursday, April 15th the Lady Flashes took a hard loss to La Reina lossing 5-0. The ladies offense and defense both decided not to show up for that game getting only 3 hits and making to many errors. Heidi Hinklin went 1 for 3 with a double and Chellie Arreguin went 2 for 3 with a double and a single. The Lady's will get another chance at La Reina later in athe season, hopefully they will have a better outing.

The Teams met on April 14th, 2010 in Fillmore. The Lady Flashes easily defeated the Lady Raiders 18 - 0 . Game highlights include pitchers Amber Magana and Marissa Vasquez sharing a no hitter. Defensively - Karinna Carrillo (catcher), Amber Magana (pitcher), Briana Garcia (3B), and Mary Ortiz (1B) all hitting long ball doubles deep into the outfield . The JV season has only two home games to go : 4/28 vs.Santa Barbara , and 5/13 vs.St. Bonaventure.

Fillmore's varsity baseball team has been trying to get a 20 ft. storage container removed from the dugout area of the field. Due to it's location it presented an eyesore and a hazard to the players. Heavy equipment could not go on the field due to the newly installed underground irrigation system dispersing reclaimed city water. The container would have to be lifted over the fence then moved to a location near the gymnasium. George Real of Piru, a 35 year retiree from OST, was contacted and he in turn contacted both OST and Ventura Crane. They both agreed to help and it was decided that which ever company had a job in the Fillmore area first would do the job.
OST showed up Tuesday afternoon and got the job done. Jim LeBard from Fillmore Rentals provided the transport trailer to make the move to the gym. THANK YOU to George Real, OST Crane and Fillmore Equipment Rentals.

On Saturday, April 10 Piru Youth Sports held it’s opening ceremonies which kicked off a full day of games. This marked the beginning of a 10-week long youth baseball season for the kids of Piru.

Piru Youth Sports board member JoAnn Torres introduced the leagues, (Tiny T-bal, T-ball/Coach Pitch and Baseball) the 13 teams and volunteer coaches. Then the first pitch was thrown by Piru Youth Sports Board member Fernando Vancini and caught by Piru Youth Sports supporter and volunteer Hector Sanchez.

Piru Youth Sports began in January 2009 as a group of community members recognized that many families in Piru have limited resources to involve their children in athletics outside of the community, and that there were no athletic programs available within Piru. With the intention of getting the kids of Piru off the couch and out of trouble, in two months, 30 volunteers formed Piru Youth Sports. During the 2009 season, 90 kids played baseball and soccer with donated equipment. Volunteers from Piru stepped up to be coaches, umpires, stat keepers, score keepers, announcers, do field maintenance and cook at games. This year looks to be a big growth year for the organization as 168 kids are currently playing baseball. The Soccer season this fall is sure to be just as popular.

Piru Youth Sports is a non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. PYS is not affiliated with any other local, state or national league or organization, so all donations stay in Piru. Current needs are: Cash donations, equipment bags (soccer and baseball), batting cage and nets, electronic ball thrower/launcher, practice equipment (bats, balls, batting helmets), soccer goals.

The Board of Directors are: Mr. Gil Escoto, Mr. Luis Lechuga, Mr. Danny Ramirez, Mr. Jimmy Sanchez, Mrs. JoAnn Torres, Mr. Tomas Torres and Mr. Fernando Vancini.

The Varsity Lady Flashes won their second game of the PVC (Pacific View Challenge) on Wednesday, April 7th against San Marcos. The final score was Lady Flashes 8 and San Marcos 4. Kellsie McLain was the starting pitcher giving up only 2 hits and 0 runs with Kianna Tarango and Lilah Duran following her to finish the game . Kennedy Smith did a great job behind the plate staying strong for the pitchers. The girls Offense was on fire again with Nadia Lomeli going 3 for 3 with 3 doubles and an RBI. McLain went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI while Smith went 2 for 3 hitting 2 singles. Tori Perez was 1 for 2 hitting a triple and having 3 RBI's. Heidi Hinklin, Chellie Arrequin and Becca Vassaur also contributed with singles. The Lady Flashes are now 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the Tri Valley League with a big week ahead of them.

Fillmore HS JV Softball played San Marcos HS on April 7th, 2010 . The Lady Flashes JV team coached by Brenda Ortiz and Philip Avila, defeated the Royals in a 5 inning game ending mercy rule last Wednesday on San Marcos' home field . Game highlights : Pitcher Amber Magana lead the defense from the mound with 4 innings seeing 3 Royals up -three down (5th inning Magana gave up a single , followed by 4 batters who failed to score the runner). On Lady Flashes defense, top hitters of the game were Tatiana Gonzales(1B ) with a home run in the third inning , and Mary Ortiz (3B) with a double in the 2nd inning.

On Thursday, March 30th the Flashes Varsity softball team had a big Tri Valley league win against Santa Clara, final score 12-2. Lilah Duran started on the mound, pitching a strong game and holding Santa Clara to only 2 runs. Kellsie McLain followed Duran finishing off their opponent. Fillmore showed a strong offense having a total of 16 hits with many players contributing. Nadia Lomeli and Kellsie McLain went 3 for 4 with Lomeli hitting 2 out of the park. Heidi Hinklin was 2 for 4 with a double and a triple while Samantha Wokal went 2 for 3 with a double. Kelsey MacDonald was 2 for 2 and Kennedy Smith and Kianna Tarango each had a hit. On Tuesday, April 1st the Varsity Lady FLashes headed to Carpinteria for their first game in the Pacific View Challenge. They started the PVC off strong beating carp 4-1. Brianna Martinez pitched a great game giving up only 1 run and 3 hits. Kianna Tarango followed her on the mound shutting Carpinteria down. Getting their bats going was Rebecca Vassaur and Chellie Arreguin each getting 2 hits in the game. Also, helping with the offense was Tori Perez, Kellsie McLain and Kelsey MacDonald each with a hit.

FHS JV vs.Nordhoff HS on 3/30/10
Lady Flashes JV lose To Rangers JV 1 -2, in a home game last Tuesday afternoon . The lady flashes could not get the bats going against the tough Nordhoff pitcher. Defensively the catcher Karinna Carrillo made two outstanding pop fly catches. The only run earned came in the third inning, Mary Ortiz(1B) getting on base with a double , Kaylee Hinklin(shortstop) beats out the drop third strike to first base. and advances Ortiz to second , Paula Laureano (outfield) hits a dropped fly ball to right field and brings Ortiz home. Rangers scored their first run(on a error) early in the first inning , and scored the final run in the last inning to win the game. The teams meet again on April 27th in Ojai at Nordhoff HS.

FHS JV vs. Carpinteria HS on 4/1/10
Lady Flashes defeat Warriors 15 - 3 in Carpinteria . With lots of hits and speedy base running the Flashes JV easily wins against the 26 roster Warrior JV team . Game highlights : Amber Magana (pitcher) offensively strikes out 13 Carp batters, gives up only one walk , and three hits. Paula Laureano (outfield) hit 2 singles. Karinna Carrillo (catcher) 2 singles. Candace Stines (outfield) home run and 2 singles. Mary Ortiz (1B) 2 singles and a home run. Briana Garcia (3B) hit 2 singles.

Four members of the Hamline University men’s basketball team, including Fillmore, California native Noah Aguirre, were honored by the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for their play during the 2009-10 season.

The Pipers finished the season with an overall record of 15-11 and were 11-9 in MIAC play. The overall record marked the first time since the 1993-94 season that the Hamline basketball program has finished above .500 and was the most wins since a 16-9 record in 1990-91.

Junior Carl Hipp (Little Canada, Minn.) led the charge for the Pipers, earning both All-MIAC and All-Defensive Team honors. The center led the Pipers in overall scoring with 17.7 ppg, 16.9 ppg in MIAC play. Hipp averaged 9.4 rebounds per game and tallied 69 blocked shots this season. He also had 18 steals.

Ray Brown (Sr., Saint Paul, Minn.) joins Hipp as an All-MIAC honoree, averaging 17.2 ppg overall and 18.6 ppg in conference play. He averaged 7.3 rebounds per game this season and blocked 24 shots. He also had 31 steals and 52 assists.

First-years Jordan Schmidt (Northbrook, Ill.) and Aguirre were two of the five players in the MIAC named to the All-First-Year Team. They were third and fourth on the team in scoring, respectively. Schmidt averaged 7.6 ppg
overall and 6.9 ppg in MIAC play. He led the Pipers in assists with 70 total.

Aguirre had an average of 7.3 points per game, 3.2 rebounds a game. Aguirre had 43 assists, 17 Aguirre named 2009-10 MIAC All-Rookie Team steals and 5 blocks. He started 20 of 26 games. He averaged 23 minutes a game, shot 44% from the field, 85% from the foul line. He had a season high of 27 pts.

Hamline ended the season 15-11, 5th place in the MIAC conference. The team lost in the first rd. of playoffs to end their season. Hamline came to CA. in Dec. to play in the Cal Lutheran tournament in Thousand Oaks which Hamline won the championship.

Noah is looking forward to traveling to Greece on a basketball tour with his team this summer. Noahs major is undecided. Hamline is located in St. Paul MN.

JV suffers the first loss of the season( 4 - 6) in 7 innings at home game last Thursday..
The JV team held the Eagles 2-0 until the 4th inning when Oak Park tied the score. Fifth inning defensive errors for the Lady Flashes resulted in 4 more runs for the Eagles. the normally strong offensive JV team had only 7 hits( singles by; Karinna Carrillo/catcher, Jamie Carrillo/outfield , Marissa Vasquez/shortstop, Candace Stines/outfield, Briana Garcia/3B , and Mary Ortiz/1B, the only dbl came from Stines(sophmore), The teams will meet again on April 29th @ Oak Park HS.

Stop by the Fillmore Boys & Girls Club on the following dates to register: Saturday, April 17th 10am - 2pm, Saturday, April 24th 10am -2pm, Wednesday, April 28th 6pm - 8pm.

Football fees are $190. A $20 discount will be given to the 2nd sibling and a $10 discount for each additional sibling. Cheer fees are $75. A $10 discount will be given to each additional sibling. Total payment is due at sign ups. Football teams will be limited to 25 players. Participants will be registered on a first come first serve basis, including returners.

All registration fees include a picture package, T shirt and shorts and a free physical sponsored by CMH Centers For Family Health. A committee composed of graduates of Fillmore High School is developing a Sports Hall of Fame to recognize and award the outstanding athletes, coaches and teams that have been a part of Fillmore High School for the past 100 years. The intent is to recognize those individuals who were active in high school athletics as well as those who continued their athletic accomplishments in colleges or universities and in the amateur competitions and in some cases into the professional ranks. We also want to recognize those coaches who were responsible for the successes of these athletes and also the outstanding teams in all sports.
