Tennis season is now in full swing for Fillmore high school girls’ tennis. I am proud of my team this year with four new enthusiastic players. New-comers Melissa and Michelle Higuera, played the number one and number three singles against Villanova on September 4th, 2018. Displaying integrity and showing respect for their opponents, Melissa and Michelle were consistent with their returns and serves giving the Villanova girls a good match. Team members Stephanie Garcia, Briana Lopez, Maria Gonzales, Jessica Flores, and Valerie Esparza also played well that day. Doubles team Maria Gonzales and Briana Lopez won all three sets scoring 3 points for Fillmore High. Doubles team Jessica Flores and Valerie Esparza scored one point for Fillmore. These girls have been running line drills and getting more and fit on the courts. Their endurance for tennis is evident. The final score was Fillmore 4, Villanova 14. A special thanks to Villanova coach Brian Grisin for having a respectable group of girls on the tennis courts. This sets a comfortable atmosphere for the new girls on the courts. Thank you again Brian. For most of the Fillmore high school tennis team, tennis is a new sport. This sport is challenging. To be able to compete after only a few months of learning tennis is an accomplishment! Keep up the good work girls. Lastly, as a coach I could not ask for a nicer bunch of girls to coach this year. Thank you girls. Go Flashes!

I am proud to announce that Fillmore High School girl’s tennis played their first match on August 28th against Providence High School in Santa Barbara. The score was Fillmore 7, Providence 11. But, don’t let this score fool you. The girl’s tennis team is just getting better and better as the seasons and years go by. I can tell you that the girls had smiles on their faces when they played against Providence as all of their hard work of running sprints, completing agility drills and learning about the strategies of tennis paid off. They scored points by changing up the pace with a lob, and stayed close to the net for better volleying results. So, we gave Providence High School a run for their money as we were fit and ready to play. Knowing that the girls are having a good time on the court is priceless to me as a coach. Also, I have to mention our number one doubles team played by Maria Gonzales and Amairani Aragon; this doubles team scored three points for Fillmore as they won all three of their matches. Our number two doubles team with second year veteran Jessica Flores and newcomer Melissa Higuera scored two points for the team winning two out of a possible three points for Fillmore. Our matches against Santa Paula High School are as follows: 9-27-2018 @ 3:00 p.m. and 10-16-2018 @ 3:00 p.m. As with the previous years, all of our matches are played “away” from home as we do not have four tennis courts to hold any home matches. Hopefully Fillmore High School will implement tennis courts into their future campus plans so the Fillmore parents can watch their girls on the court. Lastly, Please come to see the girls play as community support is well appreciated. It is only a ten minute drive to Santa Paula. So pencil us in on your calendar, hop in your car and cheer for the team! Go Flashes!
