Yesterday, just weeks after they signed their economic stimulus plan, the White House released a statement claiming credit for the reopening of a window and door factory in Chicago, Illinois. Vice President Joe Biden said, “The reopening of this factory and the rehiring of these workers provide an excellent example of how the money in the Recovery Act is targeted to spur job creation quickly.” If the Obama Administration is going to claim credit for every job created since they were elected, then if they are honest, they should also take the blame for every job lost. Since President Barack Obama was elected on November 4, 2008, the Dow has dropped 2,562 points. This past Friday, the Commerce Department reported that the U.S. economy shrank by 6.2%, making it the worst quarter since 1982. Many economists predict that labor data to be released this Friday will show that as many as 700,000 jobs were lost in February. Why has our economic downturn only accelerated since President Obama took office? Because the Obama Administration’s policies amount to a declaration of war on the investors, entrepreneurs and small businesses that make our economy grow. The budget released last week only confirmed the worst fears about the direction the Obama Administration wants to take the country. Taxes: At a time when only the economists on the White House payroll believe our economy is about to recover, the Obama Administration plans to raise taxes on the American people by almost $2 trillion. The first $1.3 trillion of these taxes are aimed at the highest earning Americans, corporations, and small businesses. According to Heritage Foundation senior analyst Brian Riedl, while the top 20% of taxpayers now pay 80% of all taxes collected by the government, under the Obama plan, the top 20% of tax filers would pay 90% of all taxes, and the number of families who owe no tax would climb to near 50%. Riedl warns: “You can only increase taxes on the rich so much before they stop working, saving and investing, and that reduces economic growth for everybody.” CONTINUED » |

I voted against the bill because California taxpayers already pay the highest sales and income tax in the nation. The last thing we should do is punish taxpayers for the misdeeds of the Legislature and Governor. I have said this for years: California does not have a revenue problem; it has a spending problem. But here we are with a new budget "deal" that, more than anything, will lighten your wallet and increase your tax burden to the state. Dear Friend, Radical Muslims are using our court system to try to silence those who expose their terrorist connections. They've done it in Europe and Canada - and now they're trying it here in America. In the case of investigative reporter Joe Kaufman, so far they've been successful. Seven Muslim groups claim that Joe is a threat. They convinced a court that Joe "intends to threaten to take unlawful action...cause bodily injury...or threaten Plaintiffs or their members with immediate bodily injury." On those grounds the court imposed a restraining order on him. And they are suing Joe for defamation to stop him from writing about Muslims in the future and to close down his web sites. City of Fillmore Interested in putting your mark on Fillmore? The Fillmore Park & Recreation Commission is soliciting potential names for Fillmore’s new community park, currently being constructed at the corner of C and River Streets. Submittals will be accepted until 5 p.m. on March 6 and may be turned in at City Hall, attention Recreation Department. The winning entry is scheduled to be announced at the March 24 City Council meeting. The winning entry will receive $50 from the City of Fillmore. City of Fillmore Persons interested in serving on the City of Fillmore Film Commission are invited to submit an application to the City by March 2. The Film Commission serves an active role in marketing Fillmore to the film industry as well as helping to develop filming policies for the City. The commission generally meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. Film Commissioners also participate in an annual film location exposition, which serves to highlight what Fillmore has to offer to the film industry. Monthly meetings of the five-person commission Two seats on the commission are open for appointment. Interested residents are asked to obtain a Citizens Advisory Group application and submit it at Fillmore City Hall, attn: Administrative Assistant Angela Mumme, 250 Central Avenue, Fillmore, CA 93015. The County of Ventura proudly sponsors the www.vcmax.org “Reuse, Donate, Recycle” waste reduction program, and encourages residents and business owners to browse through the hundreds of “Available for Reuse” and “Wanted for Reuse” ads posted free of charge on the website. VCMAX, the Ventura County Materials Exchange program, operates like Craigslist; the major difference between the programs is all ads and photographs on the VCMAX website are approved by County staff prior to posting. This is a “safe” site, and there is no charge to place ads. Everything posted on the website is free or reasonably priced. If you find something you like in an ad, just contact the listing party by email or phone, arrange for the swap, and then log back on the VCMAX.org site to confirm the match. Confirmation of matches is very important as it provides the County with the weight of the items swapped for reuse. City of Fillmore Persons interested in serving on the City of Fillmore Parks & Recreation Commission are invited to apply by February 19, 2009. Adults and youths with an interest in the City’s parks and recreation programs are urged to apply for a seat on the Fillmore Parks & Recreation Commission. The Parks commission generally meets the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at city hall, and makes recommendations and provides input to the City Council on issues concerning the City’s parks, parkland acquisition and development, as well as recreational programs and other offerings. The sevenmember volunteer board consists of five adult voting members and two nonvoting student representatives. The City is seeking to fill one adult position and two student representative positions. The adult commissioner would be appointed to complete an unexpired term ending June 2009. Student representatives are appointed to serve one-year terms and must be between the ages of 14 and 19 and reside within the boundaries of the Fillmore Unified School District. CONTINUED » |

Senate Budget Committee Vice Chair, Republican Senator Bob Dutton of Rancho Cucamonga, today issued the following statement after the California Employment Development Department announced the state’s unemployment rate reached 9.3 percent in December: “No one would disagree that California’s economy is struggling and this state is clearly in a recession. As California searches for effective ways to close a projected $42 billion deficit over the next 18 months, several proposals have been put on the table. One proposal is to cut the number of paid holidays, or 1 holiday plus a personal day, given to state employees. Cutting 2 holidays would reduce the number from 13 to 11. “Keep in mind most employees in the private workforce get six paid federal holidays. “The proposal would combine Lincoln’s and Washington’s birthdays into one paid holiday in February and eliminate Columbus Day. With the seemingly insurmountable budget challenges that face California government today, the many interest groups that depend on government funding are making their case to lawmakers on why they should be exempt from funding cuts. Unfortunately, due to the budget situation, the state can not be all things to all people. As policymakers, the first programs to cut should be those that are ineffective, duplicative or inefficient. Scarce resources should not be spent on government excess or ineffective programs, especially when we face such a huge budget deficit. Before making important and far reaching decisions regarding funding, lawmakers need to have accurate information. Which brings me to the recent Education Week figures that place California at 47th in the nation in per-pupil funding? (Education Week is a teacher union friendly publication that distributes this report annually.) The non-partisan Legislative Analyst’s Office was concerned with the way Education Week calculated the index, and was not confident that these figures accurately reflected California’s per-pupil funding compared with other states. The information that determined how the index was calculated was not available. These figures cannot be taken at face value if the criteria used are either questionable or simply unavailable. Income tax, property tax, sales tax and gasoline tax are the obvious ones. But don't forget the sewer tax, storm drain tax, trash tax and state excise tax - the list goes on.
