STUDENT INFORMATION

1. CONGRATULATIONS on a successful first week! We will have a D.J. lunch rally so enjoy the music in the pavilion during lunch. Keep up the good work!
2. SCHOOL RULES – FMS students may NOT go on other school campuses after school.
3. BRIDGES after school program is accepting applications for all middle school students. Applications can be picked up in the office or in room D-1.
4. WASHINGTON D.C. – If you still want to go to Washington D.C., see Miss Beal in room K-3 for the sign up information. There are only 12 spots left. They will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Only 7th and 8th graders may attend.
5. SHAVE IT VAN – Starting next Wednesday and every Wednesday this quarter the Shave It van will be here selling shaved ice for $3.00. Buy one to cool down after school and support the school’s trip to Washington D.C. Look for the van on the far side of the parking lot, next to the 6th grade playing fields. No walking in the parking lot to get to the van. You may only cross the parking lot across from the van and line up in the grass. Thanks!
6. LUNCH – 6th graders will be going to 1st lunch (11:20-12:00) and 7/8th graders will be going to 2nd lunch (12:15-12:55)
7. DISCIPLINE ASSEMBLY for 8th graders will take place today during Advisory.
8. BUS INFORMATION – If you are a bus rider, you must bring in your completed bus form to the office and receive a sticker on your ID card. Bus forms were handed out at registration. If you did not pick up a bus form, you may obtain one in the front office. Bring your forms in right away!

2. PARENT MEET AND GREETS will take place again this year on the last Friday of each month (starting 9/24/10) from 7:30-8:30 a.m. This is an opportunity to come and spend time with Administrators and teachers and hear about what is happening at Fillmore Middle School. STUDENT INFORMATION

1. THE FILLMORE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD provides a process for complaints alleging discrimination of a program or a program’s failure to comply with state or federal law. The policy protects the privacy rights of the complainant and prohibits retaliation for filing a complaint. Complaints must be written on “Program Discrimination/Legal Violation Complaint Form” available from the Assistant Superintendent and filed within six months of the incident or when it became known. Help in filling out the form will be provided if needed. All other types of complaints, including complaints regarding personnel or instructional materials follow other board policies. The process for registering other complaints is: 1) if the complaint concerns a teacher, first contact the teacher. 2) if the complaints are not resolved by the teacher, contact the principal of the school, then the district superintendent, and finally the Board of Education. Complete copies of these policies are available through the superintendent’s office.

Eighth grade students at Fillmore Middle School had a rare opportunity Tuesday May 25th. They heard the testimony of a Holocaust survivor, Clara Knopfler. As Clara related her story of life in Transylvania she emphasized she was the same age as FMS students when her country was occupied by Hungarians, Hitler‘s first allies in World War II. As she spoke the silence in the FMS gym was palpable. Eighth graders have been reading the Diary of Anne Frank in Language Arts and studying the Holocaust in their history classes. They sat mesmerized by actually hearing the history from a woman who lived it. As Clara explained, she was first made to live in the ghetto, an old brick factory with no restrooms. She was then transported to Auschwitz and later ended up in Riga concentration camp where she made gun powder for the German army. Luckily she lived through these trials with her mother at her side, Pepi Deutsch, who’s spirit led she and her daughter through the darkest times. From Riga she went to the Eastern front to dig anti-tank trenches. There she confronted a German soldier beating her mother. By the simple, but strong statement, “don’ t you have a mother?” actually got him to stop hitting her mother.

2. 8th GRADERS wishing to participate in Football, practice will begin Monday, June 21st. Please report to the lower locker room at the high school no later than 3:15 p.m. You will need to bring $100.00 for your spirit pack.

The Navy Honor Guard from Port Hueneme opened ceremonies for Friday’s Pride in America Day at the Fillmore Middle School. The production received high praise this year from retired teacher Mary Ford, who created this day to honor our military men and women more than 10 years ago.

STUDENT INFORMATION

1. CONGRATULATIONS to all Pride in America student ambassadors! You did a great job planning and contributing to the Memorial Day celebration.
2. SCHOOL RULES – Possession of unauthorized devices (cell phones, cameras, I-pods, etc.) will result in the item being confiscated and your parent will have to pick it up.
3. LIBRARY INFO – The last day to check out books is TODAY, 6/2. All library books are due Friday. All fines are due before any field trip in which you are participating. Please return all your books!
4. YEARBOOK INFO – All pre-ordered yearbooks for 8th graders will be distributed on Thursday, June 3rd during 1st period. No yearbooks will be for sale after school. All pre-ordered 6th & 7th grade yearbooks will be distributed during 61st period on Friday, June 4th. No yearbooks will be sold after school. Yearbooks will be sold after school on Monday, June 7th only and will be sold until we sell out. $50.00 cash only – No checks will be accepted!
5. 8th GRADERS – Our Park Day is Tuesday, June 8. You must pay any money you owe to attend. Check the list in room J-2 BEFORE or AFTER school. Do this ASAP and pay off your debts, then turn in your permission slips by Friday, June 4.
6. END OF THE YEAR DANCE is next Friday, June 4th. Save the date for our Party Grande which starts at 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale during both lunches. Cost is $4.00 in advance and $5.00 at the door. Tickets are on sale during both lunches in the pavilion. Students must have a signed parent permission slip in order to enter the dance. Don’t forget to purchase your ticket! Glow in the dark items, snacks and beverages will be available for purchase.
