It was homecoming week last week at Fillmore High School. You know what that means, a parade, the crowning of a king and queen, and of course football. Fillmore kicked the ball off first to start the game. Hueneme started their first drive on the 32 yard line. The Vikings first play from scrimmage was a 1 yard loss. The night didnt start off well for the Vikings as they were forced into a 3rd and 16. The Vikings quarterback lost the ball, but the Vikings recovered resulting in a 4th down. The Vikings punted the ball away to the Flashes, and Fillmore started on the Vikings 38 yard line. Fillmore's 2nd play from scrimmage resulted in a 57 yard touchdown run by Hayden Wright. The extra point was good and Fillmore lead 7-0 with 9:26 left in the first quarter. Down 7-0 the Vikings started with the ball at their own 40 yard line. Fillmore got Hueneme in a 3rd and long situation where they were unable to complete the pass and forced the Vikings to punt on 4th and 15. On the Flashes next drive the Viking defense stepped up and forced Fillmore to punt the ball on 4th and 5. Fillmores defense stepped up again as they returned an interception for a touchdown to push the lead to 14-0 with 4:55 left in the first quarter. The Flashes offense got the ball right back though as they recovered the ball on the kickoff at the 44 yard line. The Flashes got the ball down to the 4 yard line before they handed the ball off to Andres Andrade for the touchdown. Fillmore lead 21-0 at the end of the 1st quarter. Hueneme was able to get on the board with a 2 yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 21-7 with 10:13 left before half. Fillmore started their next drive with great field position at the 40 yard line. Fillmore ripped of a 25 yard run. That was followed by a 19 yard run down to the 5 yard line by Andres Andrade. A penalty pushed them back 5 yards, but it proved to be no big deal as they handed the ball off to Hayden Wright for a 10 yard touchdown run. Fillmore lead 27-7 with 8:10 left in the half. The Flashes kicked the ball off, and once again Fillmore recovered the ball at the 30 yard line. Fillmore got the ball down to the 12 yard line before giving the ball to Hayden Wright, who appeared to have scored, but was marked down at the 1 yard line. A quarterback sneak gave the Flashes a 34-7 advantage with 6:35 left in the half. The Vikings offense started with the ball at the 39 yard line. The Vikings had the ball on 3rd and 1, but they were stopped by the Flashes defense. Hueneme elected to go for it, and they were stopped again resulting in a loss of downs and Fillmore started with the ball at the 48 yard line. The Flashes almost fumbled the ball away, but they recovered at the 30. On the next play Hueneme intercepted the pass at the 19 yard line. The Flashes defense stopped Hueneme again and with less than 2 minutes to go before half time Fillmore started with the ball at their own 45 yard line. The Flashes handed the ball off to Hayden Wright on 2 straight plays to get inside the 10 but time ran out and Fillmore went into the locker room at half up 34-7. The Flashes started the 2nd half with the ball at the 47 yard line. The offense couldnt do much as they turned the ball over on downs at the 42 yard line. Fillmore's defense stepped up again as Hueneme turned the ball over on downs at the 38 yard line. The Flashes handed the ball off to Hayden Wright for a 9 yard touchdown to extend the Flashes lead to 41-7 with 2:40 left in the 3rd quarter. The Vikings started their next drive at the 37 yard line. The Vikings offense stalled again as they fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the Flashes at the Flashes 44 yard line. The Flashes threw a shovel pass 10 yards for a first down down to the 9 yard line to end the 3rd quarter. Quarterback Damien Gonzales got the ball down to the 2 yard line before he threw a 2 yard touchdown pass to give the Flashes a 48-7 lead with 11:14 left in the game. Hueneme started with the ball at the 39 yard line. They were once again turned away by the Flashes defense and were forced to punt the ball back to Fillmore. The Flashes started with the ball at the 42 yard line. On the next play the Flashes took the ball 58 yards to the house to go up 55-7 with 7:20 left in the game. The Vikings started with the ball on the 37 yard line. The Vikings threw a 67 yard touchdown pass with 3:45 left in the game. Fillmore was able to run out the clock, and the Flashes won by a score of 55-13. Good luck to the Vikings on the rest of their season. They go on to play Santa Maria this Friday at Hueneme High School. Meanwhile the Flashes have a bye week this week. They return to action on the 17th as they take on visiting Rio Hondo Prep. Go Flashes!
The Fillmore Flashes traveled to Santa Ynez last Friday to take on the Santa Ynez Pirates. On their first possession of the game Fillmore got the ball all the way down to the 9 yard line before they handed it off to running back Hayden Wright for a 9 yard touchdown. That gave Fillmore an early 7-0 lead. Santa Ynez got the ball for their second time, however Fillmore defense came to play, and they were forced to punt the ball away. Later on in the first quarter the Flashes extended their lead to 10-0 thanks to a field goal by Justin Coert. Fillmore got the ball later on in the second quarter where they handed it off to Hayden Wright for a touchdown to give Fillmore a 17-0 lead before half. The defense played well in the first half pitching a shut out. Santa Ynez was threatening to score as they got the ball down to the 11 yard line. The threat was averted as the Pirates fumbled the ball away and it was recovered by Fillmore. On the next play the Flashes handed the ball off to Andres Andrade who exploded 89 yards for the touchdown. Down 28-0 late in the third quarter Santa Ynez tried desperately to mount a comeback. The Pirates scored a touchdown with 11:40 left in the game. They went for the 2 point conversion and they got it as they cut in to the lead. Fillmores defense proved to much for the Pirates as that was their only score of the game. Fillmore tacked on a late field goal to make the score 31-8 in favor of the Flashes. Good luck to the Pirates on the rest of their season. Next week Santa Ynez plays away at Templeton high school. Meanwhile, Fillmore plays at home this week against Hueneme High School. GO FLASHES! |

Enlarge Photo Recently at the new and improved "OPEN" horse show at the Ventura County Fair, Fillmore had several participants, and two of those did extremely well. The two day show offered a large array of classes daily. On Tuesday they were all English classes with the morning classes featuring lot's of different jumping competitions. The 3 divisions for the show were 12 & under, 13 - 17 & 18 and over. The winners for those divisions were Jillian Morris of Fillmore for the 12 & under, Mckenzie Boyd of Camarillo for the 13 - 17 and Karen Schott of Fillmore for the 18 & over. The Greater Los Angeles Paint Horse Club would like to thank Ford of Ventura for being the largest sponsor of the show, its local business like this one that makes holding great shows like this possible.  Lupita Perez is a Varsity runner for the Lady Flashes. She is currently a second year varsity cross country runner, this past weekend the team competed at the Stanford Invitational. Lupita along with her teammates Jackie Chavez, Alexis Tafoya, Briana Segoviano and Erika Ruiz have been the team scorers for the past four meets. This past weekend the Boys Varsity competed at the Stanford Invitational. Francisco along with his teammates Jose Rodriguez, Jorge Hurtado, Josue Baez, Ismael Dominguez, Juan Martinez and Enrique Gutierrez have made up the Varsity Boys team for the past four weeks. Flashes beat Cardinals

Its going to go down as one of the most exciting games in this 90 years long rivalry. This game always provides us with exciting finishes as was the case this time around. You could feel the electricity in the air as the fans were ready, and the players were ready. The Cardinals received the ball first at the 33 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage the Cardinals rushed the ball 34 yards down to their own 33 yard line. Santa Paula got the ball into their own 20 yard line that set up a quarterback keeper for a touchdown to put them up 7-0 with 9:37 left in the 1st quarter. The Flashes started on offense with the ball on the 6 yard line of Santa Paula. Fillmore got a 1st down on a 10 yard pass. A personal foul against the Cardinals put the ball on their 32. The Cardinal defense stepped up and forced Fillmore to punt it away. Santa Paula got the ball on the 36, however they weren’t able to do anything with the ball and they were forced to punt it back. The Flashes returned the ball down to the 42 yard line. The Flashes had the ball 3rd and 6 at the 41 yard line, but a false start penalty forced them into a 3rd and 11 from the 47. The Flashes managed to gain 20 yards on the play making it 1st down and 10 yards to go from the 27. Andres Andrade rushed the ball 11 yards down to the 16 yard line. The Flashes handed the ball off to Andrade again and he rushed it down to the 1 yard line. Fillmore got on the board thanks to a quarterback sneak with 48 seconds left in the 1st quarter. The Cardinals lead 7-6 after Fillmore missed the point after attempt. Santa Paula started the second quarter with the ball on the 40 yard line. Santa Paula took the ball 33 yards down to their 20 yard line. After 2 holding calls against them the Cardinals ran the ball 16 yards for a touchdown to go up 14-6. Fillmore started with the ball at the 19 yard line. The Cardinal defense stepped up and forced Fillmore to punt. Santa Paula started with the ball at Fillmore’s 33 yard line. The Cardinals ran the ball 15 yards down to the 18 yard line. On the next play the Cardinals fumbled the ball, and it was recovered by Fillmore at the Flashes 15 yard line. Once again the Cardinal defense stepped up and forced Fillmore to punt. Santa Paula called for a fair catch at their own 41 yard line. The Flashes defense had to keep the Cardinals from getting into the end zone and they did holding Santa Paula to a field goal, and with 3:48 left in the half Santa Paula extended their lead to 17-6. A penalty on the kick off gave the Flashes the ball at the 35 yard line to start their drive. Fillmore went for it on 4th down and the Cardinals stopped them, but a pass interference penalty gave Fillmore a 1st down at the 49 yard line. With the ball on the 39 yard line the Flashes handed the ball off to Andres Andrade who exploded for 30 yards before being brought down at the 9 yard line. Fillmore gave Andrade the ball again and he bounced off of tackled for a 9 yard touchdown. That cut Santa Paula’s lead to 17-13 with just a couple of minutes before halftime. Santa Paula started with the ball on the 27 yard line. A false start penalty pushed them back 5 yards to the 22 yard line. Santa Paula attempted a half back pass, but it was intercepted by Hayden Wright at the 48 yard line with just 40 seconds left before halftime. On the next play however, Fillmore fumbled the ball away to Santa Paula at the 41 yard line. An interception right before halftime halted the threat of a score by the Cardinals as Fillmore went into the locker room at half down by 4, 17-13. Fillmore started with the ball at the 26 yard line. Fillmore passed the ball for a 1st down to the 39 yard line. Fillmore got the ball down to the 48 yard line where they handed the ball off to Hayden Wright for a 12 yard run down to the 36. They handed the ball off to Andres Andrade as he ran the ball 14 yards down to the 21. With the ball at the 19 yard line the Flashes handed the ball off to Hayden Wright for a 10 yard run with 7:38 left in the 3rd quarter. The Flashes handed the ball off to Justin Coert who took the ball 6 more yards down to the 3 to make it 3rd and goal from the 3 yard line. Fillmore went for it on 4th down and they didn’t make it, however a face mask penalty against Santa Paula gave the flashes new life down near the goal line. Santa Paula held Fillmore on 3 straight plays from the 1 yard line. Fillmore went for it on 4th down and goal from the 1 yard line. They handed it off to Andres Andrade, but Santa Paula met him with a wall of Cardinal defenders. In desperation Andrade pitched it back to Hayden Wright who scored a touchdown that no one will soon forget, and they put Fillmore up 20-17 with 5:31 left in the 3rd. Santa Paula looked to answer back as they started with the ball at the 33. The Cardinals were called for a chop block making it 2nd and 35 from the 28 yard line. The Cardinals drove the ball all the way down to the 12 yard line before they fumbled the snap and the ball was recovered by Fillmore. Santa Paula got the ball back on an interception at the end of the 3rd quarter. Santa Paula went for a field goal to tie the game up, but it was blocked by the Flashes, and Fillmore recovered at the 36 yard line. The Cardinal defense held strong as they forced Fillmore to punt. The Cardinals started with the ball at the 31 yard line. Santa Paula ran it 13 yards down to the 44 yard line. On 3rd and 12 Santa Paula recovered their own fumble losing 4 yards in the process. The Cardinals punted the ball on 4th and 16 from the 50 down to the 12 yard line. Fillmore couldn’t do anything on offense as they were forced to punt the ball back to the Cardinals with 4:31 left in the game. On 3rd and 11 the Cardinals were stopped for a 1 yard loss and Santa Paula was forced to punt the ball back to Fillmore with 2:30 left in the game. Fillmore was able to sit on the ball as the seconds ticked away and they brought the helmet back home with them. Fillmore won by a score of 20-17. This was a great game, both teams played very well. Good luck to Santa Paula on the rest of their season. The Cardinals play Oak Park next week in Santa Paula, meanwhile Fillmore travels to Santa Ynez to take on Santa Ynez high school. GO FLASHES! |

Flashes vs. Oak Park Eagles

Enlarge Photo The Fillmore Flashes football team traveled to Oak Park on Friday to take on the Oak Park Eagles. The Flashes won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball to start the game. The Flashes offense got to work starting at the 35 yard line of Oak Park. With the ball on Fillmore's 47 yard line Andres Andrade took the ball 47 yards to the house and Fillmore scored first. The extra point was good and Fillmore lead 7-0 with 10:44 left in the 1st quarter. Oak Park returned the ball down to the 39 yard line, however, a personal foul penalty backed them up 15 yards down to the 24. Fillmore's defense came out and didn't let the Eagles do anything on offense as they were forced to punt on their 1st possession. Fillmore pounded the ball down field leading to their second touchdown of the night. Fillmore was up 13-0 with 7:17 left in the 1st quarter. The Eagles got the ball again, but they were still unable to move the ball as the Flashes defense on 4th down on the 27 yard line. On the very next play Hayden Wright took it 73 yards for a touchdown to put the Flashes up 20-0 with 426 left in the 1st quarter. Fillmore tried an onsides kick, but Oak Park recovered at the 35 yard line. Fillmore's defense held strong and on 3rd down Oak Park fumbled the ball, but the offense recovered and on 4th and 19 at the 24 yard line Oak Park punted the ball all the way down to the 16. At the end of the 1st quarter the score was 20-0 in favor of the Flashes. Oak Parks defense held the Flashes offense as Fillmore went for it on 4th and short from the Oak Park 45 yard line. The Eagles used a 32 yard pass to get down to the 20 yard line of the Flashes. The Eagles got the ball inside the 10 yard line. The Flashes held the Eagles on 3rd down, but Oak Park elected to go for it on 4th down. The pass was intercepted in the end zone, and the Flashes offense started with the ball on the 20 yard line. The Flashes handed the ball off to Hayden Wright on 2nd down and 7 from the 23, and he burst 77 yards for another touchdown to widen the gap at 26-0 with 7:53 left before halftime. Fillmore's defense stepped up again as they forced the Eagles to punt. The Flashes offense started with the ball at the 40 yard line with 4:23 left in the half. Hayden Wright ran the ball 20 yards setting himself up for another touchdown run from 16 yards out that put the Flashes up 33-0 at halftime. Oak Park got the ball first to start the second half. The Eagles offense started on the 20 yard line. The Eagles offense couldn't get anything going as they were forced to punt the ball on 4th and 10. The Flashes offense started with the ball at the Eagles 44 yard line. Hayden Wright got the ball and scrambled 34 yards down to the 10 yard line. Fillmore scored on a QB sneak With 9:06 left in the 3rd quarter. That score pushed the lead up to 40-0 in favor of the Flashes. Oak Park started their next drive on the 20 yard line. The Eagles were forced to punt the ball away on 4th and 8 from the 22 yard line. Fillmore used a shovel pass to rip off a 32 yard gain down to the 35 yard line with 1 minute left in the 3rd quarter. Fillmore scored on a quarterback keeper to push the score to 46-0 going in to the final quarter of play. The Eagles offense started with the ball on the 38 yard line of the Flashes. The Eagles managed to take the ball all the way down field as the Eagles were finally able to get on the board thanks to a quarterback sneak. The Eagles went for a 2 point conversion and they got it, and they cut the lead to 46-8 with 5:30 left in the game. The Eagles tried an onside kick, but it was recovered by the Flashes on the 49 yard line. Damien Gonzalez ran the ball 22 yards down to the 27 yard line. Andres Andrade scored the final touchdown of the game with 2:35 left. Fillmore dominated Oak Park from start to finish 53-8. Fillmore's Hayden Wright was the most impressive player to watch that game as he rushed the ball for 285 yards. Good luck to the Eagles on the rest of their season. Next week they play Carpinteria at Carpinteria High School next Friday. The Flashes have a big game next week as they face rival Santa Paula High School for the 104th time. Flashes vs. Channel Islands Raiders
The Flashes had their first home game of the season on Friday as they hosted the Channel Islands Raiders. Fillmore kicked the ball off and the Raiders offense started at their 30 yard line. CI got a 50 yard run on their first play from scrimmage. The Raiders got the ball down to the 8 yard line. The Flashes defense held strong as the Raiders could only manage a field goal. CI led 3-0 with 8:16 left in the 1st quarter. The Flashes offense started with the ball at the 20 yard line. The Flashes handed the ball off to running back Hayden Wright 3 straight times, resulting in 3 straight 1st downs. The Raider defense forced a 3 and out and the Flashes were forced to punt it away on 4th down. CI had the ball 1st down on the 11 yard line of the Flashes. The Raiders offense didn’t stay on the field long however, as they fumbled the ball at the 21 yard line and it was recovered by the Flashes. Fillmore scored their first touchdown on a run by Hayden Wright. Fillmore lead 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. The Raiders got the ball again and they marched it down to the 34 yard line before the Flashes defense forced their second fumble of the game. However the Flashes weren’t able to do anything with the ball and they were forced to punt it away. The Raiders started with the ball on the 29 yard line. With 2:50 left before halftime the CI Raiders exploded for a 30 yard run. CI got the ball down inside the 10 yard line, but Fillmore’s defense held on 4th and goal from the 2 yard line. Fillmore went in to the locker room at halftime leading 7-3. Fillmore received the ball first to start the 2nd half. The Flashes offense started with the ball at the 12 yard line. On 3rd down Fillmore fumbled the ball, but they recovered at the 11 yard line. Fillmore was forced to punt the ball away. CI started with the ball at the 50 yard line with 9:57 left in the 3rd. Once again the Flashes defense held strong as they forced CI to punt the ball away. Fillmore started on the 15 yard line with 9:08 left in the 3rd quarter. After a 10 yard run by Hayden Wright a personal foul against the Raiders put the ball on the 47 yard line. Fillmore got the ball down to the 45 yard line before the Raider defense forced a fumble. Both teams exchanged punts. The CI defense held the Flashes on 3 straight plays. Fillmore appeared as if they were going to punt it away, but they faked it and they got a first down. The Flashes offense couldn’t do much with the ball as the CI defense forced them to punt it away. The Raiders offense started with the ball at the 24 yard line with 8:07 left in the game. Once again the Flashes defense forced a fumble and the Flashes recovered the ball at the 28 yard line. Fillmore got the ball inside the 10 yard line where they handed the ball off to Andres Andrade 2 times for 7 yards. Quarterback Carlos Briceno snuck the ball in for a touchdown from 3 yards out. Fillmore lead 14-3 with 4:47 left in the game. CI got the ball on the 20 yard line. Fillmore’s defense flexed its muscles again as Hayden Wright intercepted a pass at the CI 39 yard line. The Flashes put the Raiders away for good as Hayden Wright bolted 40 yards in to the end zone to put Fillmore up 21-3 with less than 1 minute left in the game. Good luck to Channel Islands on the rest of their season. They go on to face Santa Barbara next Friday at Channel Islands High school. As the sun set the bare cold bleachers came flooding in for Fillmore High School’s first home football game of the season which featured Fillmore Flashes vs Channel Islands Raiders. The atmosphere was full of warm laughs and colorful speech from players, moms, dads, brothers, sisters and friends. The snack bar was bustling with high energy and hungry customers. The air was thick with the day’s warm heat. As Fillmore won the coin toss, fans began to paste their eyes on the field commencing the first quarter. The cheerleaders began their everlasting chants with pom poms forcefully blading the air. Meanwhile the football players battled each other and put up a fight defending each other’s goals. Suddenly Channel Islands took the first touchdown marking the score 0-3. Disappointed Flashes fans relied on the cheerleaders to bring back their hope, and so it worked: With the fans new found faith Fillmore scored a touchdown bringing the score to a sharp 7-3. As half-time approached, cheerleaders began their cheer but fans were surprised to find two other groups of kids taking the stage with them. The lower classmen cheerleaders joined forces with the Flashes cheerleaders. Band followed and played an epic tune; followed by precise choreographed marching. The score remained silent throughout the 3rd quarter; then a spectacular touchdown occured during the 4th quarter and Flashes score 14 to 3. The crowd went wild! As the game came to a close only minutes remaining in the 4th quarter and tick tock: 2 minutes, 1 minute, and then 57 seconds remaining and Hayden Wright of the Flashes scored one last touchdown for the team bringing the score to 21 to 3. The game ended with delightful cheers and smiles. The stadium lights dimmed until the next play-date. Danny Felix is a member of the class of 2015. |

Flashes vs. Grace Brethren Lancers
It’s the end of August here in the town of Fillmore, and you know what that means. It means the return of Flashes football. The Flashes traveled to Moorpark College to take on the Grace Brethren Lancers for the first game of the 2014 season. The Lancers won the coin toss and chose to defer to the second half. The Flashes offence started at the Lancers 25 yard line. Fillmore handed the ball off to Justin Coert for their first 1st down of the season. The Flashes offence stalled after that, and they were forced to punt the ball away. The Lancers called for a fair catch on the Flashes 19 yard line with 10 minutes left in the 1st quarter. The Lancers scored on a 28 yard touchdown pass, which was set up by a 17 yard rush on the previous play. The 2 point conversion was no good, so with 6:32 left in the first quarter the Lancers lead 6-0. The Lancers kicked the ball off to Hayden Wright, and he made them pay with a 37 yard return. The Flashes offense still couldn’t get anything going as they were forced to punt with 4:30 left in the 1st quarter. Grace Brethren received the ball at the 25 yard line. The Fillmore defense stepped up and forced the Lancers to punt with 2:18 left in the 1st quarter. On 3rd down Fillmore completed a 12 yard pass down to the Lancers 37 yard line. Fillmore still trailed 6-0 going in to the 2nd quarter. The Lancers defense forced a 3 and out as Fillmore was forced to punt again. The Lancers called for a fair catch at the 21 yard line. On 1st down the Lancers quarterback rushed the ball 11 yards for a 1st down. The Flashes defense stepped up, and on the next play forced a fumble, and they recovered at their own 42 yard line. Fillmore’s offence still couldn’t get anything going and they were forced to punt the ball away with 9:10 left in the 2nd quarter. Grace Brethren called for a fair catch at their own 10 yard line. On 2nd down and 6 the Lancers passed the ball 15 yards for a first down at the 29 yard line. The Flashes defense stepped up again as they forced the Lancers to punt. The ball went into the end zone for a touchback, and the ball was brought out to the 20. However the offense couldn’t do much as they were forced to punt again. The Lancers drove the ball all the way into the red zone before their pass was intercepted at the 10 yard line by Damien Gonzalez. Fillmore couldn’t put up points and they went into the locker room at halftime down 6-0. Grace Brethren received the ball to start the second half, and they returned the ball down to the 42 yard line of the Flashes. Grace Brethren had the ball at the 28 yard line and ran the ball 21 yards down to the 7 yard line with 8:45 left in the 3rd quarter. Seconds later a 7 yard run gave the lancers a 13-0 lead. Fillmore received the ball, but they still couldn’t figure out that Lancer defense and they punted it down to the 46 yard line. The Lancers took over and they scored on a 21 yard touchdown run to put them up 19-0. They decided to go for the 2 point conversion and they got it, and they lead ballooned up to 21-0. Fillmore received the ball and took it down to the 25 yard line. A personal foul, and an ejection by Grace Brethren pushed the ball all the way up to the 45 yard line. Fillmore punted the ball again down to the 24 yard line. Grace Brethren couldn’t do anything on offence either as Fillmore forced them to punt with 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Fillmore went into the final quarter down 21-0 Fillmore was stopped on 3rd down on their next drive, but they elected to go for it on 4th down. Michael Luna caught the 4th down pass and gained 20 yards. Later on the Flashes went for it on 4th down again, but the Lancer defense held strong and forced a turn over on downs. Grace Brethren started with the ball on their own 10 yard line. They took the ball all the way down to the Flashed 30 yard line, and with 4 minutes left in the game they rushed the ball 17 yards down to the 13 yard line. The Lancers get the ball down to the 3 yard line where they punched it in one more time to push the lead to 27-0 with 3:21 left in the game. Fillmore received the ball with just over 2 minutes left. The Lancers intercept a 4th down pass with 30 seconds left and Grace Brethren won the game 27-0. |
