 The Fillmore Middle School Wrestling Team recently competed at Isbell Middle School’s Annual Takedown Tournament on Thursday, September 19th. Results are as follows: Devin Camacho 0-2, Erik Castaneda 0-2, Delilah Cervantez 1-1, Natalia Herrera 2-0, Amalia Nolan 2-0 , Jonathan Patino: 1-0-1, and Emma Torres: 2-0. ![Last Friday, the Fillmore Flashes improved their record to 4-0 with a 48-0 win against La Canada high school. The Flashes completed their first back to back shutout games since 1990 and the defense was led by senior Defensive End Tyler Coert and his 5 tackles, including 1 sack. On offense, senior Quarterback Jared Schieferle passed for 295 yards and tied the school record with 5 passing Touchdowns, including 3 of them to senior receiver Ryan Gonzalez. Senior Running Back Bryce Nunez added 114 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns. Next week the Flashes are away at 7pm vs. Temple City High School. Courtesy Coach Tanya Gonzales Tuesday, September 10th at Camarillo Frosh/Soph lost 4-25, 9-25, JV lost 17-25, 9-25, Varsity lost 15-25, 19-25, 13-25. Varsity stand out players were Nathalia Magana with 2 serving aces, 6 digs, and 8 assists, Tori Gonzales with 8 digs and 7 kills. Thursday, September 12th the Flashes held their first league game at home against Carpinteria Frosh/Soph 25-13, 25-19, JV 25-16, 25-17, Varsity 17-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-13 Standout players were Emma Ocegueda with 5 serving aces and 24 digs, Tori Gonzales 2 aces, 15 digs, and 7 kills, and Nathalia Magana 3 aces, 17 digs, and 25 assists. |

Enlarge Photo On Saturday the Fillmore Cross Country teams competed at the Eagle Invitational in El Segundo on the Lakes Golf Course. Combined with the warm weather and the humidity the course run mostly on grass and rolling hills with many turns. This proved to be very challenging especially as the day wore on. The day started with 4 girls competed in the Varsity division. They were led by senior Vanessa Avila who placed 6th in 19:28.9. This was the fastest time of the day for the Fillmore girl competitors and Vanessa’s fastest time this year. She was followed by newcomer Aliana Tapia who placed 20th, in 21:02.7. Both Vanessa and Aliana were awarded an individual medal. They were followed by Angelica Herrera 31st. in 21:57.5, and Giselle Perez 34th in 22:20.9. The boys varsity ran to a first place team finish besting a field of 11 teams. Leading the charge were the one, two punch of Fabian Del Villar and Erick Gutierrez. Fabi finished in 4th in 15:57. He was followed by Erick Gutierrez 5th in 15:58.1, Michael Camilo Torres 9th in 16:18.7, Jesse Martinez 10th in 16:24.2 and rounding out the scorers Davis Flores 11th in 16:33.2. All five of these athletes were awarded individual medals and a winning team finisher’s plaque. This was the top team performance of the day for all Fillmore teams. The junior boys also performed well and finished 3rd in the team competition. They were led by Jesse De La Cruz who finished in 4th place and posted a time of 16:39.6. He was closely followed by teammate Matthew Munoz 5th in 16:51.3, Juan Carlos Laureano 9th in 17:15.1, Dave Bustos 34th in 18:39.7, Andres Gonzalez 42nd in 18:50.6, and Brian Sanchez 65th in 19:29. Jesse, Matt, JC and Andres were awarded individual medals and this team brought home a third place team plaque. Eva Vieyra was the lone Fillmore competitor in the Girls JV race. Eva finished in 45th place in a field of 105 runners and was awarded an individual medal. The boys sophomore race saw Fillmore’s top runner, James Flores finish in 25th place in 17:48.1. He was followed by Brandon Gonzalez 77th in 19:18.9, Eneyin Ortega 85th in 19:28.8, Nathen Hurtado 119th in 20:24, Izaac Hurtado 167th in 22:13.8, and Luke Hernandez 193rd in 24:39.9. James Flores was the only medal winner in this group and the group finished 12th in the team competition. Fillmore had two competitors in the sophomore girl’s race. Leading Fillmore athletes was Jasmine Vega who place 18th in 22:32.6. She was followed by Natalie Cobian 38th in 24:33.9. Both girls were awarded individual medals. The freshman boys were led by Luis Castaneda who finished in 26th place in a time of 18:30.7. This was an 18 second improvement for Luis over last week. He was followed by Theodore Ebell 139th in 22:11.9, David Reyes 151st in 22:49.5, Nicholas Hurtado 161st in 23:10.8, and Armando Martinez 189th in 25:33. Luis was an individual medal winner in this race. The freshman girls were led by Emely Garcia in 89th place in a time of 25:25.8. She was followed by Lorena Perez 107th in 26:34, Yarely Orozco 125th in 28:45.2, Liliana Montejano 129th in 29:05.1 and Wendy Ciciliano 132nd in 30:19.5. In the team competition the girls finished in 12th place. All of these young ladies ran their first 3 miler in the hottest part of the day. Fillmore tough. The Flashes will next compete at the Raider Invitational in Oxnard at College Park. The meet is scheduled for Friday, October 20th at 1 PM. Hope to see you there. |

Special teams played a huge role for the Flashes, as they blocked two punts for touchdowns, recovered by seniors Juan Gallegos and Dylan Crawford respectively. On offense, senior running back Bryce Nunez had 3 touchdowns on 4 carries for 52 yards and senior receiver Ricky Calderon added 2 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown. A note from tennis coach Bowman. On September 3rd Fillmore traveled to compete at Santa Clara High School. Final score Fillmore 8, Santa Clara 10. Are the girls disappointed? I should think not. I am not. This was a close and long match. I was biting my fingernails as it almost came to a tie. When a “tie” occurs, the games are counted to determine the winner. Moving on, doubles team Melissa Higuera and Maritza Campos played one tiebreaker set and scored two points total for Fillmore, and number one singles player Emilia Magdaleno was hot yesterday, scoring three points out of three possible points! Go Emilia! Heillyn Burr playing the number two singles player scored one point for Fillmore, along with doubles team Rosalyn Diaz and Sofia Cardenas. Doubles team Ashlin Rodriguez and Jimena Cortes won one point for the team. The Fillmore High School girls tennis team is excited that the season is in full swing. Once again I, along with the team am pleased when some of the parents have time to attend the matches. Thank you to the parents of Emila, Maritza, Melissa, Jennifer, Ashlin, Kira, and Heillyn for being able to attend. I know the girls were excited to see you there. The match was held at the Oxnard Tennis Center which is located near the Performing Arts Center. The weather was hot and humid calling for more hydration than usual. I was called to go the court on one occasion to assist, only to discover that a tennis ball had gone over the fence; no disagreement in other words. Coaches can be called to the court to solve disputes or to sometimes help with the tiebreaker scoring as it can be complicated. Fortunately there were no squabbles on the court playing the match against Santa Clara, or maybe the girls are learning to settle disputes on their own. I am always pleased when the coach on the other team compliments the Fillmore players. Assistance coach Dimitiri commented that our number three singles player Eveleen Lizarraga “was returning the tennis balls like a backboard.” This means that Eveleen was hitting everything back! Good job Eveleen! I can believe it as the girls have been working hard on the court getting fit and practicing serves. Lastly Emilia and Maritza hold the record for “thirty three serves in” in a row. The record of forty eight is held by Maria Gonzales from last years team. As soon as all of the girls hit ten serves in a row, they are rewarded with a pizza party compliments of the coach! *** It was Fillmore versus Villanova Prep in Ojai California on 9-5-2019. It was a very hot day. The tennis team drained the five gallon Gatorade water and ice container. I encourage the team to drink plenty of liquids especially to prevent injuries and of course heat related illnesses. The starting line-up for the day was the following: Singles-Emilia Magdaleno, Eveleen Lizarraga, Maritza Campos Doubles-Melissa Higuera/Jimena Cortes, Heillyn Burr/Ashlin Rodriguez, and Sofia Cardenas/Rosalyn Diaz. Our secret weapons were Samantha Pacheco, Erika Anguiano, Paola Ruiz, Kira Martinez, Anneliese Asfour, and Jennifer Carrillo. The entire team participated in the match except for one player who had sustained an injury from the prior match against Santa Clara High School. The final score was Fillmore 8, Villanova 10. Doubles teams Melissa/Jimena/and sub Jennifer, and team Heillyn and Ashlin were the top scorers for the day. Singles players Emilia, Eveleen, and Maritza also scored points for the team Flashes. Go Flashes! As usual I was so proud to watch the Fillmore girls participate in this event as this team is quite competitive. These pre-season matches are getting the girls ready for the league matches which begin on September fourth against Hueneme High School. A special thank you to mothers Monica Campos and Claudia Higuera for bringing snacks for the girls that day! The girls appreciated it. |

It was a hard fought match for the Flashes, but they did fall short to Pacifica in 5 sets. Scores were 22-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22, and 6-15. Stand out players were Lilly Diaz with 20 assists and 10 digs, Olivia Palazuelos who had 9 kills and 3 blocks. Emma Ocegueda had 5 serving aces and 20 digs. |

 Courtesy Coach Sean Miller. Last Friday, August 30th the Fillmore Flashes improved their record to 2-0 with a 39-14 win against Brentwood high school. Senior Quarterback Jared Schieferle threw for 176 yards and 2 touchdowns while also adding 58 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Junior wide receiver Dylan Sierra caught 7 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. On defense, senior linebacker Dylan Crawford had a team-high 6 tackles included 3 for a loss and 1 sack. Junior Defensive tackle Nick Jimenez, Defensive End Justice Rodriguez, and senior Tyler Coert each added a sack to the winning effort as well. Next week the Flashes are at away at 7pm vs. Desert High School. A note from tennis Coach Lolita Wyche-Bowman We marked our first match of the season playing against Laguna Blanca. This private school is located in Santa Barbara in a beautiful setting as we picnicked on the grounds after the tennis match was completed. It was hot and humid there but the girls held up as they were accustomed to the hot and steamy weather we have been experiencing in Fillmore. The final score was Fillmore 3, Laguna Blanca 15. In high school tennis, a point is won for the team when a player wins a set against the opponent. The following girls won three points for Fillmore: Number one singles player Carla “Melissa” Higuera, number two singles player Emilia Magdaleno, and number three singles player Heillyn Burr. I have to mention that the families of all these three players had made the trip to Santa Barbara to watch their daughters play. Maritza’s mom was there also! Family support paid off! Not to worry, for those families who were not available, I was there to support them, congratulated them when they hit great shots, or even consoled them when the match wasn’t going their way. Laguna Blanca’s head coach commented on the good skill level of the girls. He is well aware of the Fillmore’s team starting from scratch this year minus our number one player. Twelve more girls from Fillmore High School competed against Laguna Blanca. Yes! We have 16 girls on the tennis team this year! I am more than pleased for this number as we have started a match with negative points when we had a team of less than nine players. I can tell you that the entire team was pleased with their performance on the court as several players commented, “Hey coach, I got all of my serves in,” I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be coach!” and “I hit some good shots, but I know I need to stay back more behind the baseline.” This last comment of staying behind the baseline is a daily topic by the way. In tennis, if a player does not have enough time to hit a ball, it is difficult, especially if the player is new to the game. The player will find herself too close to the ball or in a spot where the ball is bouncing at their feet. If she stands back, then she will have plenty of time to get in position to return the ball. Even though I may tell the girls to get back behind the baseline many times, or not to leave a ball on the court when they are playing, during a real match is when all of these things are a reality for the game. Did you know that the girls learn how to deal with conflict when they are playing a match against the other team? What I tell them is, “Try and resolve it on your own at first, then if that approach doesn’t work, get the attention of one of the coaches and we will intervene.” If there is a problem with “calling the lines” in or out, and it is brought to the coach’s attention, one coach (Fillmore or the other team’s coach) will stand on the court to call the lines if there is a question. In other words, if a ball is called “out” and there is disagreement, the coach will call the point for them. This is actually a common problem with amateur tennis as there are no judges to call the lines from an advantageous platform. Were looking forward to the match schedule for next week. The next dates and opponents are as follows: 9-3 Santa Clara, 9-5 Villanova, 9-10 Providence, and 9-17 Santa Clara. We begin our first league match against Hueneme high school on 9-24. I will update the season as time passes especially to inform ALL Fillmore residents when we are playing against Santa Paula! Go Flashes! P.S. I am so proud of the team. Special thanks to the City of Fillmore as the torn nets were replaced this year. |

Our JV won in 2 sets 25-13 and 25-17. Varsity won in 5 sets 25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 15-25, and 15-12. Standout players for the evening were Elisa Ramirez with 10 kills, 3 serving aces, and 2 blocks, Nathalia Magana had 12 assists and 2 aces, and Emma Ocegueda with 15 digs and 2 aces. On Thursday, August 29th they played at Santa Clara and all 3 levels played. Frosh/Soph lost in 2 sets 21-25 and 18-25. JV won in 2 sets, 25-22 and 25-15. Then Varsity lost in 4 sets 23-25, 17-25, 25-19, and 20-25. Highlights for the evening were Emma Ocegueda with 22 digs, Nathalia Magana with 22 assists, and Olivia Palazuelos has 2 serving aces, 2 blocks, and 8 digs. |

On Saturday, the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams traveled to the University of Santa Barbara to compete in the UCSB Gaucho Invitational. Athletes competed in either a short race of 1.43 miles or a longer 3 mile race for the more seasoned competitor. The first race of the day featured a group of 5 Fillmore girls running the longer 3 mile course. The Flashes were led by Vanessa Avila in 15th place in a time of 20:08.32. She was followed by Angelica Herrera in 57th place in 22:18.72, Giselle Perez 73rd in 22:59.4, Isabella De La Cruz 77th in 23:01.88, and Eva Vieyra 110th in 24:50.10. In the team competition the Flashes finished in 8th place. Vanessa was the lone medal winner in this race. The second race of the day for the Flashes was also contested over the long course. Top runner in this race was Senior Davis Flores 38th in 17:13.5. He was followed by Erick Gutierrez 42nd in 17:20.7, Jesse De La Cruz 44th in 17:24.4, Camilo Torres 45th in 17:26.3, Alex Manzo 47th in 17:31.5, Juan Carlos Laureano 51st. In 17:38.8, Dave Bustos 61st in 18:03.8, and Matthew Munoz 74th in 18:21.4. In the team competition, Fillmore’s top runners finished in 7th place. The next group of Fillmore female athletes ran over the short course and were led by newcomer Aliana Tapia. Aliana covered the 1.43 mile course in 9:51.7 and finished in 7th place. She was followed by Jasmine Vega 23rd in 10:34.4, Isabel De La Cruz 62nd in 12:08.4, and Emma Ortiz 64th in 12:18.9. Both Aliana and Jasmine were medal recipients. The final race of the day was also run over the short course. Leading the Fillmore Harriers was another newcomer Luis Castaneda who placed 10th in a time of 8:14.41. Luis was also a medal winner for the Flashes. Luis, James and Andres were medal winners for the Flashes. The teams had a great start to their young season. On the day, the Flashes brought home 6 individual medals.
