 This past Saturday, November 23rd, the Fillmore Raiders hosted the East vs. West Youth Football games. The Fillmore High School football stadium was filled with kids from all over the county who came out to compete. The Fillmore Raiders had coaches and players participate in all six games which were held this year.  (Above) Fillmore’s #7 Dylan Sierra as he dives into the end zone scoring a touchdown for the Flashes in their playoff game against South Pasadena. The Flashes won in the first round of the CIF playoffs against South Pasadena with a score of 47-27. Senior Quarterback Jared Schieferle led the way on offense with 3 touchdown passes, two of them to junior wide receiver Dylan Sierra. Seniors Ryan Gonzalez and Bryce Nunez also added touchdowns. On defense, the Flashes were led by junior defensive linemen Nick Jimenez who had 4 sacks and a total of 7 tackles. Nick did it all for the Flashes, as he also had a 13 yard rushing touchdown. Seniors Paget Ekelund and Tyler Coart also had strong defensive performances for Fillmore. Next week the Flashes are away at Yorba Linda HS versus Esperanza High School in round 2 of the playoffs. On Thursday, Fillmore’s four Cross Country teams competed on their home course, on the beautifully manicured greens of Elkins Golf Course. This was the third and final meet to determine the Citrus Coast League Champions (individual and team), and the Varsity teams that will move on to CIF postseason season competition. The teams competing over the mostly grass course with two major climbs were Fillmore, Nordhoff, Carpinteria, Santa Paula, Hueneme, and Malibu. The Junior Varsity boys started the day off as they have many times this year by running to the front right off the line. They took full control of the race before the two mile mark, led by Jesse De La Cruz from start to finish as he won in a time of 16:56.02 and thereby securing the title of Junior Varsity League Champion. His teammates followed capturing 8 of next 9 places. Juan Carlos Lomeli was second in 17:18.39. Followed by Matt Munoz 3rd in 18:07.13, Dave Bustos 4th in 18:20.22, James Flores 5th in 18:31.43, Andres Gonzalez 6th in 18:45.11, Luis Castaneda Navarro 8th in 19:09.30, Nathen Hurtado 9th in 19:09.34, Daniel Martinez 13th in 19:47.02, Bryan Sanchez 17th in 20:09.09, Brandon Gonzalez 20th in 20:26:02, Eneyin Ortega 27th in 20:43.39, Theodore Ebell 35th in 21:36.25, David Reyes 38th in 21:46.48, Nicholas Hurtado 41st in 21:54.72, Luke Hernandez 58th in 23:16.83, Izaac Mercado 61st in 23:27.15 and Anthony Estrella 62nd in 23:39.32. The top 8 Fillmore athletes in this race were medal winners. They were followed by the Varsity Girls who were led by Senior Vanessa Avila who ran a tough race and finished in second place, posting a time of 20:08.13. She was followed by Nicole Gonzalez in 8th place in a time of 21:22.53, Alianna Tapia 14th in 22:30.94, Angelica Herrera 16th in 22:40.37, Lorena Rangel Perez 22nd in 23:09.57, and Syenna Ponce 28th in 23:33.87. Vanessa and Nicole were individual medal winners. The Boys Varsity team dominated their race placing all 7 of their runners in the top 11 finishers. They were led by Camilo Michael Torres. Camilo ran his trademark race, running close to the leaders before making his signature move just beyond the two mile mark and never relinquishIng the top spot again. Camilo’s first place finish in 16:04.77 was the fastest time posted on this course for any Fillmore athlete since we began to run at Elkins Golf Course. Camilo, League Champion, was closely followed by his teammates who as a team, posted an excellent team gap of 32.93 seconds. Fabian Del Villar was 3rd in 16:19.12, Davis Flores 4th in 16:25.51, Erick Gutierrez 6th in 16:30.45, Rey Laureano 7th in 16:37.70, Jesus Martinez 10th in 16:47.43, and Alex Manzo 11th in 17:15.23. Six of Fillmore’s seven runners were awarded individual medals. The Junior Varsity Girls brought this excellent day for the Flashes to a close with another team victory. They were led by Natalie Cobian who ran perhaps her best race of the season to finish in second place in a time of 23:49.33. She was followed by Giselle Perez 3rd in 24:01.82, Eva Vieyra 4th in 24:02.42, Anahi Pascual 5th in 24:23.58, Isabella De La Cruz 10th in 24:59.64, Emely Garcia 16th in 25:34.90, Liliana Montejano 18th in 25:40.44, Daisy Guerrero 19th in 25:53.46, Isabel De La Cruz 28th in 28:02.71, Emma Ortiz 29th in 28:04.65, and Citlalli Trujillo Valencia 39th in 31:51.74. The top 5 Fillmore athletes were individual medals in this race. The Fillmore girls and boys Varsity team will next compete in Riverside at the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Prelims, with the goal of qualifying for CIF Finals on November 23rd. |

On Saturday, the Fillmore boys and girls Varsity cross country teams traveled to Riverside. There they competed on the same course they will run on for both the CIF Division 4 Southern Section Prelims and Finals. The fairly flat Course is 3.0 miles and is run on an abandoned golf course (dry, dusty, not green). Fillmore athletes competed against 33 other teams. Seven girls toed the line at 10:15 a.m. in the Division 2 race. Under hot, dusty, and dry conditions, Nicole Gonzalez was the top finisher for the Flashes running to a 105th place finish in a time of 22:11.6. She was followed by Angelica Herrera 115th in 22:41.3, Alianna Tapia 121st in23:00.9, Jasmine Vegas 127th in 23:10.3, Syenna Ponce 133rd in 23:30.2, Lorena Perez 136th in 24:12, and Giselle Perez 140th in 25:03.8. The seven Varsity boys toed the line 15 minutes later under similar conditions. Davis Flores led the Fillmore contingent running to 26th place in 16:09.7. He was followed by Fabian Del Villar 28th in 16:12.1, Erick Gutierrez 38th in 16:18.9, Michael Camilo Torres 56th in 16:39, Alex Manzo 62nd 16:42.8, Jesse Martinez 63rd in 16:43.3 and Rey Laureano 68th in 16:50.9. The top five scorers were separated by 33.1 seconds and finished sixth in the team competition. Medal winners were Davis Flores, Fabian Del Villar, and Erick Gutierrez. Fillmore also ran in the boys Junior Varsity Race and was led by race winner Jesse De La Cruz. Jesse captured first place in a winning time of 16:39.3. He was followed by Matthew Munoz 6th in 17:33.4, Dave Bustos 14th in 17:53.6, James Flores 25th in 18:12.3, Juan Carlos Laureano 32nd in 18:20 and Andres Gonzalez 88th in 19:52.2. This was the best finish for a Fillmore team, as they captured the team title, and in the process outran 18 other teams. Medal winners in this race were Jesse De La Cruz, Matthew Munoz, James Flores and Juan Carlos Laureano. The Flashes teams will next compete on their home course at Elkins Golf Course on November 7th. This meet is scheduled to start at 3:30 P.M. The course is run over a mostly grass surface with some paved paths. There are two very challenging hills. This meet is the final Citrus Coast League Meet that will determine League Champions, Team Championships, and Varsity Teams that will represent our League at Division 4 SS CIF Finals. Come out and cheer for us. |

A note from tennis Coach Lolita Bowman We have completed a total of three matches since my last article in the paper. The scores are as follows: Fillmore 5, Santa Paula 13, Fillmore 1, Malibu 17, Fillmore 0, Carpinteria 18. The line-up for the Santa Paula match was the following: singles players from one to the number three position Emila Magdaleno, Heillyn Burr, and Maritza Campos. Doubles teams were Melissa Higuera/Rosalyn Diaz, Eveleen Lizarrage/Sofia Cardenas, and Ashlin Rodriguez/Erika Anguiano, and secret weapon team Samantha Pacheco (Sam)/Jennifer Carrillo. The score of only three points does not really represent the effort that the girls put into these tough matches. Singles players Emilia, Heillyn, and Maritza had close scores where the match could have gone either way. Playing against Santa Paula is also a challenge as we are not accustomed to the windy conditions at the courts. We will be playing against Santa Paula again on the 24th of October, so we will see if the girls redeem themselves. I can tell you, as usual, that I am so pleased with the skill level and the competitive spirit instilled in this team. They play their best! Scoring points for Fillmore that day was singles player Emilia, doubles teams Melissa/ Rosalyn, Eveleen/Sofia, and Ashlin/Erika. Great job girls! The next match that was played was against the seasoned team of Malibu high school. Number one singles player Heillyn Burr scored the solo point for Malibu. Sam and Jennifer were also playing singles that day playing their best against their tough opponents. Sam was pleased with her tennis that day, “I was surprised at how well I was rallying coach.” I can say that Samantha and some other girls have been staying after practice to put some extra time in. This effort has definitely paid off. Doubles teams Rosalyn/Erika, and Eveleen/Maritza came close to winning their sets with scores of 6-3, 6-4, and 6-3. As mentioned, these matches can go either way as the scores are close. I tell them to simply hit the ball sooner when they are up against opponents who can hit the ball hard and fast. Next time girls! After this match, the team enjoyed a picnic with an incredible orange, pink, and yellow sunset and ocean view in the background. The next match that was played was against Carpinteria high school on October 17. We did not score any points during that particular match, however, many games were won, including some close scores where either player could have been victorious. The line-up for this match was the following: Singles-Heillyn, Jimena Cortes, and Sam, Doubles-Melissa/Eveleen, Rosalyn/Sofia, Maritza/Erika, and secret weapon doubles team Kira Martinez/Anneleise Asfour. Heillyn came close to winning as her scores were 6-4, 6-3, and 6-3. Paola Ruiz, and Jennifer also played singles that day. Player Paola Ruiz expressed joy, “I had some long rallies coach!” I told her that I was absolutely impressed with her play. “I think the other girl said she has been playing for a few years,” Paola said to me. At times, I encourage the girls to have conversations after the match is over to realize the difference in the amount of experience that their opponent may possess. As our team in Fillmore is nascent, they can look forward to playing as well as some of their opponents in the future with hard work. In the end, the finals will be held at Pepperdine University on October 28, and 30. I will be taking the top six players to that event. This year I have a large pool of good players to choose from. At times some of the girls have to miss out on playing a match as school always comes first; especially an important exam day. We will see who will be chosen. The girls may have the opportunity to play against a previous opponent as this event will be including the entire league of teams: Fillmore, Malibu, Carpinteria, Santa Paula, Nordoff, and Hueneme. We will have to put up with enjoying the incredible view of a sunset and vast ocean as the finals take place. On Friday, a group of 10 boys traveled to Woodward Park in Fresno for a preview run /race over the same course they have set a goal of competing on for the State Championship Meet in November. 249 competitors toed the line for the start of the small school division (1,750 or less) at the Rough Rider Invitational. This was Fillmore’s first foray into this 40 plus year classic. On another note, the Varsity Boys are currently ranked as the 3rd team in the Division 4 Southern Section Rankings posted on 10/21. Fillmore boys won the race in a tight team battle with Calaveras Redskins from the Sac-Joaquin Section, a Division 4 School. Leading the Flashes was Camilo Epitacio Torres capturing 14th place in 16:48.2. He was supported by his teammates Rey Laureano 20th in 16:54.7, Davis Flores 22nd in 16:55.6, Alex Manzo 24th in 16:57.2, Erick Gutierrez 26th in 17:04, Jesus Martinez 29th in 17:07.8, Jesse De La Cruz 37th in 17:11.8, Juan Carlos Laureano 41st in 17:17.7, Matthew Munoz 61st in 17:45.8, and David Bustos 81st 18:14.1. The top five finishers was separated by a mere 15.8 seconds. They were awarded a team trophy. Camilo, Rey, Davis, and Alex were individual medal winners. The second group of athletes traveled to Ojai and competed in the Ventura County Cross Country Cross Country Championship Meet on Saturday. Fillmore fielded one complete team and several individual competitors. David Reyes started off the morning for the Flashes as the lone competitor in the boys Freshman Race. David placed 23rd in a time of 21:38.5, a 2 minute 14. 4 second improvement for him on this course. He was our first medal winner on the day. The Frosh/Soph Girls followed and Lorena Rangel Perez led the Fillmore group of four placing 17th in a time of 23:24.7. She was followed by Liliana Montejano 29th in 25:08, Daisy Guerrero 34th in 27:10.3, and Citlalli Trujillo Valencia 44th in 33:12.9. Lorena was an individual medal winner. Two girls competed in the Varsity Girls Race. Leading the way, as she has all year, was Senior Vanessa Avila. She placed 3rd in the Small School Division in a time of 19:58.2 and was awarded an individual medal. This is a personal best on this course for Vanessa. Fellow Senior Eva Vieyra followed in 44th in 25:39.1. The Varsity Boys were led by Andres Gonzalez who finished in 37th in 18:45.6. Bryan Sanchez followed 43rd in 19:47, and Anthony Estrella 49th in 22:19.3. In the Sophomore Boys Race, Fillmore ran a scoring team. They were led to second place team finish in the small school division by James Flores who placed 6th in 18:37.4. He was followed by Brandon Gonzalez 11th in 19:32.2, Nathen Hurtado 13th in 19:48, Isaac Mercado 27th in 22:29.8, and Luke Hernandez 28th in 22:34. Their second place finished was awarded with a team plaque. James, Brandon and Nathen were medal winners. The final race of the day the Junior Varsity Girls featured Fillmore’s best finish for an individual. Nicole Gonzalez led the charge with a first place finish in the Small School competition posting a time of 22:11. She was followed by Syenna Ponce who finished in 9th in a time of 24:42. Both girls were medal winners. The Flashes will next travel to Riverside and participate in the Riverside Invitation on Saturday. |

 (above) Fillmore Flashes JV #6 leaps into the air to make the touchdown catch and score for the Flashes. The Flashes got back in the win column this week, with their 38-0 win over the Hueneme Vikings on Saturday night. Even with the odd schedule predicated by Edison shutting off power, the Flashes defense stood strong with interceptions by junior DB Ty Wyand and senior linebacker Dylan Crawford. Ty Wyand and sophomore safety Phillip Cervantez also had fumble returns for touchdowns on defense. On offense, senior running back Bryce Nunez ran for 115 yards and a touchdown, while junior receiver Dylan Sierra added 7 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown. Lastly, Flashes JV defeated Hueneme with a final score of 28 to 6. JV will host Nordhoff Thursday, October 17th at 5pm. Next week the Flashes Varsity will be off this week. Fillmore Girls Cross Country Team Competes at Meet
 Pictured is Flashes Sophomore Angelica Herrera who finished 30th with a time of 22.26.4 at the Nike Portland Invitational last Wednesday, October 9th. Enlarge Photo On Wednesday, October 9th, several members of the Fillmore Cross Country Team competed at Lake Casitas in Ojai in the Twilight Invitational. The meet was held over a challenging hilly course adjacent to the Lake. There were 4 races, a boys and girls1.9 mile, and a boys and girls 3 mile. Fillmore athletes competed in 3 of the races. Two Fillmore athletes competed in the second race on the short 1.9 mile course. They first finisher for Fillmore was Daisy Guerrero who finished in 145th in a time of 16:44. She was followed by Wendy Ciciliano 179th in 18:24.1. The second race of the day was the boys long race where all competitors regardless of grade level or school size competed at the same time. Thirteen schools and 182 competitors toed the line. Once again, Camilo Torres led the Flashes finishing in 6th place in a time of 16:31.2. He was followed by Jesus Martinez 8th in 16:36.8, Davis Flores 11th in 16:42.4, Erick Gutierrez 12th in 16:46, Rey Laureano 14th in 16:49.9, Alex Manzo19th in 17:09.2, and Fabian Del Villar 20th in 17:10.8. The top five finishers for Fillmore were separated by a mere 18.2 seconds. This is an excellent team grouping that propelled The Fillmore Boys Cross Country team to a team victory. The other Fillmore competitors who also ran well were Juan Carlos Laureano 29th in 17:28.30, David Bustos 32nd 17:35.6, Matthew Munoz 48th in 18:09.3, Luis Castaneda 59th in 18:29.6, James Flores 60th in 18:30.7, Eneyin Ortega 71st in 18:59.6, Andres Gonzalez 84th in 19:18.3, Nathen Hurtado 90th in 19:29, Bryan Sanchez 93rd in 19:36.3, Daniel Martinez 94th in 19:36.5, Brandon Gonzalez 104th in 19:50.5, Theodore Ebell 148th in 21:46.9, Anthony Estrella 1159th in 22:38.9, David Reyes 160th in 22:47.4, Luke Hernandez 174th in 24:59.9, and Nick Hurtado 175th in 25:26.8. As a team, the boy’s team finished in first among all teams and the top seven boys were awarded individual medals. The 3.0 mile Girls race followed, 11 teams competed with a total of 103 runners. Vanessa Avila ran in the top position for most of the race before finishing well and claiming the third spot in a time of 20:06.6. Vanessa was followed by teammate Nicole Gonzalez 10th in 20:59.5, Syenna Ponce 22nd in 22:03.6, Angelica Herrera 30th in 22:26.4, Jasmine Vega 32nd in 22:36.5, Natalie Cobian 61st in 24:06.3. Lorena Perez-Rangel 67th in 24:24.7, Eva Vieyra 83rd in 27:57.0, Anahi Pascual 88th in 26:47.1, Liliana Montejano 89th in 26:48.7, Emma Ortiz 95th in 27:59.8, and Isabel De La Cruz 98th in 28:21.0. The girls finished in a second place tie in the team competition. The top 5 Fillmore athletes were awarded individual finishers medals. The Cross Country teams will next compete on Tuesday in Ojai at Lake Casitas on the same 3.0 mile course. This will be the second of the 3 meets in the Citrus Coastal League that will determine four League Championships and CIF Varsity teams and individual postseason competitors. Start time is 3:30. |
