Saturday, January 4th. Anaheim, CA – The Fillmore Flashes Girls Wrestling team made a strong showing at the 2025 Lady Pioneer Girls Wrestling Tournament, hosted by Western High School in Anaheim. The event, which brought together some of the top female wrestlers from across the region, provided an excellent opportunity for the Flashes to showcase their improving skills.

Leading the charge for Fillmore was senior co-captain Emma Torres, competing in the 130-pound weight class. Torres displayed exceptional wrestling abilities, finishing with a 3-1 record and securing 2nd place in her division with all three of her victories coming by pin and losing in the finals by decision. Torres has a season record of 16-5 and has medaled in all of the tournaments she has competed in this season.

Sophomore Naomi Bonilla fought her way to a 4th place finish in the 115-pound division, compiling a solid record of 3-2. Bonilla has an overall record of 15-6.

In the 140-pound class, junior Skyla Sandoval finished in 6th place, marking another strong finish for Fillmore. Also earning a 6th place finish was senior Ava Manzano in the 235-pound division. Both girls ended the day with a 2-3 record in their weight classes.

Senior Celeste Juarez (110 lbs.), freshman Jasmine Contreras (120 lbs.), and junior Michelle Pinedo (135 lbs.) fell short of making it to the podium but had hard-fought competitive matches. Juarez finished 0-2, Contreras and Pinedo each ended the day with a 1-2 record.

Girls Head Coach Michael Torres highlighted the growth of individual wrestlers and the determination shown by each competitor. “Emma, Naomi, Skyla, and Ava all earned medals, which is ties the highest number of our female competitors taking home awards this season. We are progressing as we start ramping up for Citrus Coast League competition with goals of qualifying for CIF postseason competition.”

The Fillmore Flashes will host senior night in a Citrus Coast League Dual Meet vs. Nordhoff HS on Wed. January 15 at 5:30pm, as well as CCL Finals on Sat. Feb. 8th at 10:00am.

Saturday, December 21,2024-Long Beach, CA. The Fillmore Flashes Girls Wrestling Team had a remarkable showing at the Millikan High School Tournament this past weekend, with strong performances across the board. The event brought together talented wrestlers from various Southern California schools and the Flashes had several standout performances.

Senior Co-Captain Alexa Martinez led the team with a dominant performance, securing the championship in the 145 lbs. weight class with a perfect 3-0 record, earning the top spot in her division with two pins and a decision (3-0).

In the 135 lbs. weight class, Senior Co-Captain Emma Torres fought hard to earn a 3rd place finish, posting an impressive 3-1 record with victories by pin, technical fall (16-0), and major decision (11-0) and one loss by decision (9-10).

The team also saw solid contributions from team members, including Naomi Bonilla (115 lbs.), who finished with a 2-2 record, and Olivia Juarez (110 lbs.), Delilah Cervantez (115 lbs.), and Jasmine Contreras (115 lbs.), each finishing with a 1-2 record.

Skyla Sandoval (140 lbs.) also managed to secure a win, finishing with a 1-2 record. Juliet Bustos (105 lbs.) and Michelle Pinedo (140 lbs.) finished 0-2, Jacqueline Lomeli (130 lbs.) went 0-3, and Candy Aguilar (170 lbs.) went 0-4.

Head girls coach Michael Torres praised the team for their hard work and dedication, noting how each wrestler has shown significant growth throughout the season. “While we have some work to do, every athlete on the team has improved their skills and demonstrated incredible progress,” said the coach.

The Millikan High School Tournament served as a great opportunity for the Flashes to gain valuable experience during the start of Winter Break, and the results will certainly fuel the team’s motivation as they continue their season.

The Flashes will host dual meets vs. Channel Islands High School: Wednesday, January 8th, and vs. Nordhoff High School: Wednesday, January 15th, both events are scheduled to start at 5:30pm. For the full Girls Wrestling Schedule please refer to the FUSD Athletics Website.

On Saturday, December 14, Lancaster, CA – The Fillmore Flashes wrestling team competed in the High Desert Duals Tournament at Lancaster High School. The tournament began on a high note for Fillmore in Round 1, as they defeated Excelsior High School with a dominating 44-0 victory.

In Round 2, Fillmore received a bye.

In Round 3 the Flashes lost to Golden Valley High School, 66-18.

In Round 4, the Flashes lost to Adelanto High School, 66-12.

In Round 5, the team bounced back, securing a strong 36-18 win over Junípero Serra Catholic High School.

Round 6 brought a dramatic showdown against Dos Pueblos, where Fillmore tied the match 34-34. However, due to the 6th tie breaking criteria—where the team with the fewest forfeits prevails—Fillmore was edged out by Dos Pueblos and lost.

Fillmore had some standout individual performances. Tony Lemus took 1st place going undefeated in the 120 lbs weight class. Emiliano Castanon (144 lbs) and Brendan Morales (165 lbs) each earned 2nd place finishes. Additionally, Brennon Ballard earned a well-deserved 3rd place finish in the 150 lbs category.

The Fillmore Flashes’ next two home meets will be Wednesday, January 8th vs. Channel Islands HS (Youth Night) and Wednesday, January 15th vs. Nordhoff HS (Senior Night) both Citrus Coast League matches are scheduled to start at 5:30pm at the FHS Gym.

Saturday, December 14, 2024, Port Hueneme, CA – The Fillmore High School Girls Wrestling Team competed at the Showdown at the Shore Girls Wrestling Tournament held at Hueneme High School. Despite being short-handed due to illness affecting several of the athletes that were unable to participate, the team’s resilience and determination were on full display, with standout performances from several wrestlers, including co-captains Emma Torres and Alexa Martinez.

Senior Emma Torres, one of the team’s co-captains, had an exceptional outing at the tournament, competing in a highly competitive 16-girl bracket at 130 lbs. Emma finished in second place with a 3-1 record, including three pins. Torres has an overall record of 10-3 this season, with 7 takedowns, 6 near falls, 4 reversals, and 7 pins.

Fellow co-captain Alexa Martinez, also a senior, added to the team’s success at the tournament by finishing in third place in the 145 lb bracket. Like Torres, Martinez wrestled in a competitive 16-girl field, compiling a 3-1 record, including 3 pins. Martinez, with a season record of 13-3, has had a remarkable year, with 9 takedowns, 3 near falls, 3 reversals, 1 escape, and 10 pins.

The younger athletes on the team also delivered impressive results. Sophomore Naomi Bonilla continued her standout season by finishing in 4th place at 120 lbs, with a 4-2 record. Bonilla’s performance included 1 pin and 3 decisions, improving her overall season record to an outstanding 10-2, with 15 takedowns, 6 near falls, 2 reversals, 1 escape, and 5 pins.

Sophomore Yoseline Cruz, competing in the same weight class, went 2-2 in the tournament, while Junior Skyla Sandoval placed 2nd in the 135 lb B Bracket earning a silver medal, finishing with a 1-1 record. Junior Michele Pinedo also made her mark in the 125 lb B Bracket, going 1-1 with a pin.

Freshman Jasmine Contreras competed at 120 lbs, going 0-1, while Senior Christine Panopio fought hard in the 135 lb bracket but finished with a 0-2 record. Senior Ava Manzano rounded out the team’s performance with a 2-2 record in the 235 lb weight class.

Girls Head Coach Michael Torres commended the athletes. “The girls represented Fillmore well. Alexa and Emma continue to battle with the top girls in our section and Naomi showed that she can medal at the varsity level. While we were short a few athletes due to illness, those who were able to compete gave it their all,” Coach Torres said.

The Fillmore Flashes’ will host two Citrus Coast League home meets on Wednesday, January 8th vs. Channel Island HS (Youth Night) and Wednesday, January 15th vs. Nordhoff HS (Senior Night) both matches are scheduled to start at 5:30pm at the FHS Gym.

On Tuesday, December 10,2024- Isbell Middle School, Santa Paula, CA - In a wrestling dual meet held at Isbell Middle School, the Fillmore Flashes triumphed over the Santa Paula Cardinals.

The evening started with one lone Junior Varsity Boys’ match, where Fillmore’s Thomas Torres lost by pin to give the Cardinals a 6-0 team win. In high school wrestling, team points are given for pin (6 pts), forfeit (6 pts), disqualification (6 pts), injury default (6 pts), technical fall- a win by 15 points (5 pts), major decision- a win by 8 points or more (4 pts) and decision- a win by less than 8 point (3 pts).

The Varsity Girls’ team won in a forfeit heavy match, finishing with a 48-24 score against the Cardinals. The Flashes’ girls’ squad continues to display its depth as one of the teams to contend for the Citrus Coast League girls team title. The Citrus Coast Wrestling League features teams representing Channel Islands, Fillmore, Hueneme, Nordhoff and Santa Paula High Schools.

The Varsity Boys’ division capped off the night with a Flashes 66-12 victory.
At 132 pounds, William Maryon pinned his opponent in the first period, giving the Flashes an early lead.
In the 170-pound weight class, Isaac Rivera staged a comeback. After trailing in the match, Rivera came from behind to pin his opponent.

In the 190-pound weight class, Elijah Hodges showcased his strength earning a win by pin.
One of the evening’s most exciting moments came in the heavyweight bout, where Fillmore’s Valentin Garcia went up a weight class. In high school wrestling, athletes are allowed to move up one weight class to compete. Despite the challenge, Garcia secured a win by pin in a performance that left his teammates cheering.

“Valentin’s decision to move up a weight class shows his commitment to the team,” said Head Boys Coach Manuel Ponce. “He knew it would be tough, but he went out there and got the job done. His pin was a high point in our victory tonight.”

On Sunday, December 8th, former Fillmore athletes, Martin Arredondo, and Fabian Ochoa competed in the Santa to the Sea Half Marathon, a 13.1 mile run. The Half Marathon starts at the giant Santa located along Interstate Highway 101 and continues through the strawberry fields of Oxnard before heading to historic downtown Oxnard and ending at Marine Emporium Landing.
Martin finished 27th overall and captured first place in his division. In spite of taking a wrong turn and running an extra 200 meters, he ran a 3 minute personal best of 1:23:31. Fabian finished in 42nd in 1:28:18 and finished 7th in his division.
After the holidays, and a few days to recover, Martin plans to race the full Marathon in Ventura. That race is held on February 23rd with a 6:30 a.m. start time. Following the Ventura Marathon, Martin will then travel to Boston, Massachusetts and run the 129th Boston Marathon. This race is run on Patriots Day, Monday, April 21, 2025.

The Fillmore Flashes triumphed over the Agoura Chargers in a forfeit-heavy girls wrestling dual meet, securing a decisive 60-12 victory on Wednesday, November 20th at Fillmore High School. The Lady Flashes in their second year under Girls Head Coach Michael Torres showcased their depth vs. a limited number of Agoura athletes.

Fillmore received seven forfeits while Agoura received two. A forfeit in high school wrestling occurs when an opponent in one of the established fourteen weight classes fails to appear for a match, and the other wrestler is present and ready to wrestle. The forfeiting team loses the match, while the winning wrestler receives 6 team points. Even with the discrepancy in forfeits, the Flashes athletes shined in head-to-head competition, with three standout performances that sealed the team’s commanding victory.

At 115 pounds, Celeste Juarez (grade 12) delivered a dominant win, pinning her opponent in the second period and putting the Flashes on the board early. Naomi Bonilla (grade 10) followed suit in the 130-pound weight class, executing a first period pin to continue the momentum. Alexa Martinez (grade 12) in the 155-pound division, also secured a pin in the second period, further boosting Fillmore’s lead.

Other Fillmore wrestlers, including those who won by forfeit, contributed to the lopsided score. Coach Torres shared his pride in his team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of strong preparation. “We’ve been focusing a lot on foundational techniques, and it showed tonight. Our girls that competed went undefeated, all winning by pin, and I’m proud of each of them for their efforts. Unfortunately, we still have a couple of holes in our lineup, and we are missing girls in the 100 lbs. and 110 lbs. weight classes. It would be great to have representatives in every weight class.”

The FHS Girls Wrestling Team will next compete in their first tournament at Pacifica High School, Saturday, Nov. 23 and will return to team action at Del Sol High School in Oxnard on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The next home meet will not be until Wednesday, January 8th vs. Channel Islands.
