On 12-16-09, the victim noticed that her cat, Squeekers, had been shot in the leg. Due to the extensive damage caused by the shot, Squeekers’ leg had to be amputated. Not only has this incident caused extreme grief to the family, but it has resulted in expensive veterinary bills as well. Squeekers is a domestic, short hair Tabby that was rescued by its current owners as a kitten, and has been a loving member of their family ever since.

Anyone having information regarding the subject who shot the cat is urged to call either the investigating detective or Crime Stoppers.

On December 16th, detectives from the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau, in conjunction with several allied agencies, served three search warrants related to an ongoing cockfighting investigation that began in February. The locations included a residence in the city of Camarillo, a farm property in the unincorporated area of Moorpark, and a farm property in the unincorporated area of Somis. The allied agencies included Ventura County Department of Animal Regulation, Humane Society of Ventura County, Ventura County Code Enforcement, City of Camarillo Code Enforcement, Immigration & Customs Enforcement, and the California Highway Patrol.

A Thousand Oaks woman was attacked inside her home Thursday morning, when a man beat her severely with a metal pry bar.

Michael Brunton surrendered inside the residence on Camino Graciosa when deputies confronted him. He had forced his way inside the home and was lying in wait for his stepsister, whom he attacked with the pry bar when she returned home.

The victim was transported to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center, where she was listed in serious condition and is expected to survive.

The confrontation stemmed from Brunton recently being accused of having inappropriate contact with the victim’s daughter. The daughter was inside the house at the time of the attack, and tried to escape when her mother was being beaten. Brunton chased the girl and pulled her back inside the home, where he continued the attack.

Brunton was booked at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility for attempted murder, kidnapping, committing lewd acts on a child, and residential burglary. He is being held in lieu of $1,000,000.00 bail.

The Sheriff’s Detention Services Division has changed to a new provider for inmate phone services. The new company, Global Tel-Link (GTL), has just completed installing the new phone system. As of December 16, 2009 phone calls placed by inmates are now being made on the GTL system. The system will work in much the same manner as the previous one, with some important refinements and cost savings to the County. Inmates who have purchased calling cards while in custody will now be able to use the card after they are released.

The Thousand Oaks Police Department’s Traffic Bureau is investigating a hit and run injury traffic accident involving a vehicle and a bicyclist. The collision occurred in the 1200 block of Calle Pensamiento. The male juvenile bicyclist was riding westbound on Calle Pensamiento when he turned north and attempted to cross the street. The vehicle was traveling westbound on Calle Pensamiento and collided with the bicyclist. Immediately after the collision occurred, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene and was last seen westbound on Calle Pensamiento towards Avenida De Las Plantas.

Personnel from the Ventura County Fire Department and American Medical Response responded to the scene. The juvenile was transported via ambulance to Los Robles Regional Medical Center for what appeared to be minor injuries. Deputies searched the area with the assistance of a helicopter, but were unable to locate the vehicle.
The suspect vehicle was described as a green, full size pick up with silver trim. The driver was described as a Hispanic male, 40 to 50 years old, 5’5” to 5’10”, heavy set, with brown hair, brown eyes, and a mustache. During a probation search, 18 year olf Miguel Uriostegui and a 17 year old male were discovered hiding in the attic after the ceiling collapsed beneath them. Uriostegui was arrested for drug influence 11550 H&S while the juvenile was arrested for resisting arrest 148PC and violating his criminal probation. Report 09-30670.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of an injury traffic collision that occurred on Lewis Road (SR-34) near Germain Street, in the City of Camarillo. As a result of the traffic collision, a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) struck the victim, who was riding a bicycle. The victim was wearing dark colored clothing and had no lights on his bicycle. During the traffic collision, the victim sustained serious injuries including a broken leg and head trauma. The victim was transported by ambulance to St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo, and then later moved to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, where he was in critical condition. At 12:25 a.m. the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by doctors at St. John’s Regional Medical Center. The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct an autopsy later today. Also, assisting with the traffic collision was the Ventura County Fire Department and American Medical Response (A.M.R.) personnel.

As a result of the traffic collision, a portion of Lewis Road between Germain Street and Adolfo Road was closed for approximately 5 hours, while traffic was diverted around the area.

The investigation is continuing and anyone who may have witnessed the accident, and who has not yet come forward, is asked to contact the Camarillo Police Department’s Traffic Bureau.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be a factor in the collision.

On 12-14-2009, at approximately 2140 hours, a Moorpark patrol officer was dispatched to a vandalism that had just occurred in the area of Walnut Street and Charles Street. The suspect used black spray paint to vandalize Vaquero Clothing & Music, Moorpark Produce, Whitaker Hardware, ACS Veterinary Clinic, The Fine Print Shop, 690 Walnut, Seasonal Adventures, One More Time, Mayflower Market, and State One Insurance.

An anonymous citizen contacted the officer and stated they saw the suspect spray paint several buildings a few minutes prior to the officer's arrival. The witness provided a detailed description of the suspect.

During a search for the offender, the officer observed the suspect lying on a driveway in the shadows as if he were trying to hide from the officer. As the officer got out of his car to approach the suspect, the suspect ran but was located again in a backyard in the 100 block of Everett Street. The suspect was found hiding behind a car at that address. The subject fit the description provided by the witness.

Through additional investigative techniques, the officer was able to determine that the subject was the suspect involved in the graffiti vandalism affecting the downtown businesses.

The total damages were estimated in excess of $400.00. The juvenile suspect was arrested and booked into Juvenile Hall for felony graffiti vandalism.

On December 11, 2009, at approximately 10:35 PM, the Camarillo Police Department received a call of “suspicious circumstances.” A female had called “911” and left the telephone line open for the dispatcher to hear her conversation. Based upon the conversation heard by the dispatcher, it appeared that a male suspect was holding the female caller against her will in a vehicle. The wireless call was traced to the area of Edward’s Cinema in Camarillo.

Deputies from the Camarillo Police Department responded to the area in an attempt to locate the caller and suspect. Upon arrival, the original female caller contacted deputies and she indicated the male suspect had taken off running into Edward’s Cinema. The deputies entered the theatre and chased the suspect through the theatre. The suspect left the theatre through an emergency exit and continued running towards the Camarillo Promenade/Outlet Mall area. Several deputies eventually caught the suspect and the suspect fought for several minutes with the deputies. In order to overcome the suspect’s resistance, deputies deployed their tasers and utilized a Sheriff’s K-9.

The suspect was arrested for battery on a peace officer, battery on a police K-9, resisting arrest, parole violation and possession of a controlled substance for sale. He was transported to St. John’s Regional Medical Center for treatment injuries sustained during the struggle.

On 12/13/2009 at about 6:14 P.M. deputies assigned to the Moorpark Police Department responded to a reported brandishing that occurred in the parking lot at 51 Majestic Court. Upon arrival deputies spoke to Santos Rodriguez who reported that a male Hispanic in his mid – 20’s approached him with a knife and demanded his belongings. Upon seeing other persons approaching, the suspect fled on foot. While investigating this incident deputies learned of a car jacking that had just occurred at 50 majestic, about 400 yards from the original attempt robbery. Deputies contacted Emilio Diaz and learned that a male Hispanic, matching the description of the suspect who contacted Santos Rodriguez, climbed into his vehicle and, threatening him with a knife, ordered him to get out. Once Diaz got out of the vehicle, the suspect tried to flee but accelerated too rapidly and struck several other cars. The suspect got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

The investigation is continuing.

Sheriff’s Deputies from the Ojai Police station were dispatched to investigate multiple reports of a small plane crash in the Ojai Valley. The callers gave various locations for deputies to check before locating the plane wreckage next to the residence at 24 Krotona Road, in the Krotona Institute of Theosophy.

Deputies found a single engine small plane on an asphalt roadway, occupied by two males. Both males were killed as a result of the impact. Numerous resources from the Ventura Sheriff’s Department, Ventura County Fire Department, Life Line Ambulance, California Highway Patrol and the F.A.A. responded to the scene of the accident to render aid and initiate investigations. Members of the Ventura County Fire Department extricated the two victims from the wreckage before releasing them to the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office. The victims’ identities are being withheld pending proper notification by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Witnesses reported the plane appeared to have some mechanical problems and difficulty maintaining altitude. No structures were damaged and no additional victims were located as a result of the crash.
The plane wreckage will remain at the crash site until tomorrow morning, when investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (N.T.S.B.) and Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A.) will return to continue their investigations.

This afternoon, a Camarillo traffic deputy was driving northbound on Carmen Drive when he saw a vehicle that had collided with a tree on the east side of the roadway. The deputy did not see the accident occur but came upon it moments after it happened. The location of the accident was northbound on Carmen Drive, north of Coe Street.

The deputy immediately stopped and assisted a citizen who was attempting to help the victim. Members of the Ventura County Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter and had to use the Jaws of Life to get the victim out of the vehicle. The victim was transported by ambulance to Saint John’s Regional Medical Center, in Oxnard. He went directly into surgery and is currently in critical condition.

As a result of the accident, the northbound lanes of Carmen Drive between Modesto Avenue and Edgemont Drive were closed for approximately 3 hours, while traffic was diverted around the area.

The cause of the collision has not yet been determined. Anyone who witnessed the accident, and who has not come forward, is asked to contact the Camarillo Police Department’s Traffic Bureau.

Sergio Ramos was sentenced this morning to 27 years in state prison for a shooting he committed in Oak View in 2008. Ramos, an Ojai gang member, has been in custody since his arrest in June of 2008.

On 5-18-08, at about 0800 hours, deputies and investigators from the Sheriff’s Gang Unit were called to an address on Short Street where they discovered a car that had two bullet holes in it. The area was searched and 7 shell casings were found more than 350 feet away. It was later determined the shell casings had been fired from a semi automatic handgun. Deputies also located a victim, Kyle Hoffman, who stated he was shot at during the early morning hours. He did not report the incident at the time of the shooting.

Sheriff’s gang investigators developed information that Ojai gang member Sergio Ramos was involved in the shooting and obtained a search warrant for his residence.

On 6-20-2008, the Sheriff’s Gang Unit, along with deputies from the Ojai station, served a search warrant at Ramos’s residence, located in the 100 block of La Luna Street, Oak View. Ramos was present during the search and was arrested for assault with a firearm and street terrorism. During the search of the residence, ammunition was located that was similar to the shell casings found at the scene. Ramos was booked into the Ventura County Jail.

Sheriff’s Gang investigators believe Ramos shot at Hoffman because Ramos thought Hoffman vandalized his residence.

In June of 2008, the District Attorney’s Office filed charges against Ramos; he remained in custody until his trial. In October of this year, a jury found Ramos guilty of attempted murder and intentionally discharging a firearm during the commission of that crime.

California state law mandates that anyone convicted of a violent crime serve at least 85 percent of his or her sentence. Ramos will be eligible for parole in 2032, at the age of 51.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is offering a traffic safety program for teenage drivers and their parents. The Start Smart Program is aimed at helping future and newly licensed teenage drivers become aware of the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of being a licensed California driver. The program is designed as an educational tool for parents and teenagers in an effort to reduce the number of teenage injuries and deaths resulting from traffic collisions. Traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for 15-20 year olds. The primary objective of the program is to provide teens and parents with an understanding of how poor choices behind the wheel can affect the lives of numerous people. The Start Smart program also provides teens and parents with information on defensive driving, traffic laws in California, dynamics of traffic collisions, tips on avoiding traffic collisions, and DUI awareness.

Smart Start classes are free of charge. The next class will be on Tuesday December 15, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ventura Area CHP office. The Sheriff’s Gang Unit arrested three Saticoy gang members in connection with an unreported shooting that occurred on 10-15-2009. Anthony Beltran, Trevor Gentry, and 16-year-old Victor Hernandez were all arrested this past week for charges that include Attempted Murder and Street Terrorism.
On 10-15-2009, Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of subjects shooting from a vehicle in the Community of Saticoy. When units arrived, they were unable to locate any witnesses, victims, or physical evidence to show that a shooting had actually occurred.
Over the next few days, Sheriff’s gang investigators canvassed the neighborhood looking for anyone who might have seen or heard the shooting. Investigators were able to establish a shooting had in fact been committed and located two uninjured victims.
Sheriff’s gang investigators were able to establish that around 6:45 P.M, the two victims went to 3 Amigo’s Market located at 1191 Alelia, Saticoy. While at the market, they were approached by several gang members who asked the victims where they were from. During the confrontation, the victims were beaten and repeatedly told they were in the territory of the Saticoy gang. As the victims fled, they were shot at several times.
During the investigation, gang investigators searched several homes and known gang hangouts. They seized two shotguns, a rifle, and a handgun. They also recovered a spent bullet believed to have been fired at the victims.
Trevor Gentry and Anthony Beltran were both arrested on Wednesday. Trevor Gentry, who was also on parole, was arrested on the additional charge of violation of his parole terms. Both were booked at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility, Ventura.
Victor Hernandez was arrested on Thursday and lodged into the Juvenile Justice Center, Oxnard.
On Friday, The District Attorney’s office filed adult criminal charges against 16-year-old Victor Hernandez and Anthony Beltran. Victor Hernandez’ charges include Attempted Murder, Shooting at an Occupied Vehicle, and Street Terrorism. He is being held without bail. Anthony Beltran’s charges include Assault with a Firearm, two counts of Battery, and Street Terrorism. He is being held on $205,000 bail.
The District Attorney’s Office declined to file charges against Trevor Gentry pending further investigation. He remains held without bail for violation of his parole terms.
The Sheriff’s Gang Unit expects to make more arrests in this investigation.

Deputies responded to a call of an injury traffic collision that occurred at the intersection of Worth Way and Upland Road, in the City of Camarillo. The accident resulted in pedestrian, Laurie Perr, being struck by a commercial truck. The victim and a friend were exercising by walking in their neighborhood. As the victim stepped off the curb at Worth Way, a truck making a right turn struck her, and she sustained fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:46 p.m. Assisting with the accident were the Ventura County Fire Department, American Medical Response (A.M.R.), Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Sheriff’s Chaplin.

As a result of the accident a portion of Upland Road between Mission Oaks Blvd. and Woodcreek Road was closed for approximately 6 hours, while traffic was diverted around the area.

On November 24, 2009, a citizen reported that his car was burglarized during the night in the area of the 200 block of Sevilla Street. The suspects apparently smashed one of the car’s windows and removed a GPS system. The suspects also stole a wheel and tire off the car.

Camarillo Detectives were able to gather enough evidence to arrest the above suspects in the crime and recover the stolen property. The four suspects were booked at Juvenile Hall.

The City of Camarillo is experiencing an increase in vehicle burglaries and thefts from unlocked cars. Most of these cases involve situations in which items of value: lap top computers, I-pods, purses, and cell phones, are left in plain sight. The Camarillo Police Department is urging all citizens to remove items of value from their cars and report any suspicious activity to the police.
