Leila Joy Rogers

Leila Joy Rogers

Leila Joy Rogers passed away peacefully in her home with her family by her side on January 16, 2009 after a year long battle with cancer. She was 77 years old.
A life long resident of Fillmore, she was born January 28, 1931 to William and Florence Brockus, who preceded her in death.
Joy will be deeply missed by her husband of 58 years, Kenneth Rogers; her three children, Rebecca Eller (husband, Tom) of Arroyo Grande, Kenneth Rogers, Jr. (wife, Martha) of Fillmore, and Philip Rogers of Fillmore; her four grandchildren, Marie Haase (husband, Brian), Amy Rogers, Kelly Rogers, and Katie Rogers; her two great grandchildren, Carson Haase, and Austin Haase; and her two brothers, Bill Brockus of Glendale, Utah, and Ed Brockus of Glendale, Utah.
As a young woman, she worked for the phone company. Much of her life was dedicated to lovingly care for her family. She was a graduate of Fillmore High School, where she learned to enjoy writing. The computer provided her with much joy and satisfaction in being able to correspond with friends and family. For many years she was the class representative for Fillmore High School Class of 1948 and the class representative for her husband Kenneth's graduating class, the Fillmore High School Class of 1946. As the class representative, she was responsible for organizing both of their annual class reunions. She particularly enjoyed contacting class members and writing the class newsletter summarizing each of their travels, activities, and events.
Genealogy was a great interest of hers. It is her detailed research and documentation that has allowed the family to understand where they came from and who they are. She was notably proud of her Scottish heritage.
Joy and her husband Kenneth were in the cattle ranching business for quite a few years and were active members of the cattle ranching community in Ventura County. The memories of the camaraderie of the cattle round ups and barbecues are something that family and friends will treasure.
She will be remembered as a woman of great integrity and fairness, always ready with a smile and a helping hand. Joy will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Hospice for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in her name to Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice.
Memorial services will be held at the Bardsdale Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2009.

Our Angel
You left our side to return home,
The light inside you had always shone.
A whispered thought and gentle tear,
When in our minds you are always near.
One of God's Angels you've become,
But then again, you were always one.
Take your flight then rest your wings,
It's our turn now to care for things.

He was born to Thomas and Esther October 29, 1914 and raised on the family’s citrus ranch in Bardsdale. He attended the Bardsdale Grammar School and graduated from Fillmore High School in 1931. While attending Fillmore High School, he started as halfback during the football seasons, and threw the javelin and discus during the track seasons. His love of aircraft began in high school when he and his cousin Ebby Wileman ordered and built a glider. They taught themselves how to fly and would take a passenger for a flight after being towed airborne by a Model-T down the runway at the Fillmore Airport which was located where the Fillmore Fish Hatchery is today. After attending UCLA for 1 year, he enrolled at the Curtis Wright Aeronautical Institute, in Burbank, Calif. He graduated with a degree in Aircraft Design Engineering. While at Lockheed Aircraft Company, Amelia Earhart worked with him while he made design changes to her Lockheed Electra aircraft, which she made her fateful flight in 1937. Brian grew up in Fillmore and graduated from Rio Mesa High School. Brian was confined to a wheelchair most of his life due to Ataxia Telangiectasia.
