Eugene L. Warring (1925-2018)

Eugene “Gene" Warring, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 21, 2018, in Mariposa, CA.
Gene was born on June 21, 1925, at his family home at Buckhorn Ranch, located in the Santa Clara Valley near Fillmore, CA. His great-grandfather, Benjamin Warring, settled in this area and developed several acres of citrus in 1861. Gene was born to Lester and Bessie Warring and was the youngest of five children. His brothers Jack, Leland, Bill and his sister Anita preceded him in death.
At 17, Gene volunteered to serve in the U.S. Navy. He served from 1943 to 1945 aboard the USS Chincoteague as a Radioman and received a Purple Heart. The most memorable event in Gene’s experience during the War was witnessing the raising of the United States Flag on Iwo Jima.
After returning from the war in the Pacific, he married his high school sweetheart, Gloria Mauck. He always said he wanted to marry Gloria from the first time he saw her at a Fillmore High School dance. They were married in Las Vegas, NV on July 7, 1945. Together they made their home in Fillmore and had four children, Christopher, Kathleen, Crystal, and Philip. Gene worked for the local Union Oil Distributorship for several years and later was offered an opportunity to work for the family-owned business, The Warring Brothers Citrus Ranch. He moved his family into his childhood home at Buckhorn Ranch where they lived for 7 years. In 1965, he and Gloria became owners of the 76 Union Oil Distributorship in Fillmore and worked together until their retirement several years later. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife in their RV taking in the beautiful country that he loved. These were always his favorite memories and stories to share.
Gene was a natural athlete. He enjoyed playing golf and swimming, but his passion was pitching a “mean” softball! He loved the game, but especially the camaraderie it brought. He was always very humble and modest about his pitching abilities, but he was very well known throughout Southern California for his “fastball." His love for the game continued as he coached his son in Little League for several years. He was also known for his sense of humor and love of life. His laugh was always very contagious. One that, when you heard him laughing, you just couldn’t help but laugh along with him.
Gene is survived by his wife Gloria of 73 years; his three children, daughter Kathleen (Vernon) Crofford of Mariposa, daughter Crystal (Gary) Cox of Mariposa, son Philip (Jessica) Warring of Milbrae; seven grandchildren, Leah (Ron) Zawadzki, Kelly (Ryan) Rettig, Summer (Justin) Gish, John (Gianna) Cox, Seth (Leanna) Cox, Alexander Warring and Sam Warring; and nine great-grandchildren, Kenzie, Ben, Jack, Joe, Kate, Violet, Leo, Micah, and Ezra; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives who loved him dearly.
Gene loved people and his family. He will be greatly missed by all those blessed to have had him in their lives.

Candy Gurrola (1930-2018)

Candy Gurrola was born on February 2, 1930 in La Verne, CA. Candy was a resident of Fillmore for 30 years before moving to Anaheim, CA, where she passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. She was a medical assistant for 30 + years. She loved giving gifts and sending all occasion cards to all her family and friends.
Candy is preceded in death by parents Panfilo & Juana De Haro Gurrola, sisters Katie Zavala, Lucy Munoz, Pauline Ruiz, brothers John, Gregg & Dolores (twins) and Julio Gurrola.
She is survived by her brothers Camilo Gurrola, Richard Gurrola and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Services for Candy will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 starting with a Rosary at 9:30am at St. Francis of Assisi Church 1048 Ventura St., Fillmore, CA. A Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 10am at St. Francis of Assisi Church officiated by Father Alex. Burial to follow at Bardsdale Cemetery 1698 S. Sespe St. Fillmore, CA

Ruth Leah Gunderson (1928-2018)

Ruth Leah Gunderson of Fillmore, CA was taken by the loving arms of God through Heaven’s Gates on May 13, 2018. Born in a small home nestled by the tracks of the Norfolk and Western Railroad in Blue Ridge, Virginia Ruth’s life journey began on August 9, 1928. Raised by a mother widowed soon after her birth and being the youngest of 13 children, eight brothers and four sisters, from the very beginning Missy Ruth’s incredible journey began surrounded by love and care. From this she developed her invincible philosophy that she would hug, smile and share love with everyone she met.
After graduating from Piedmont College in Winston Salem, North Carolina she attended and graduated from City Memorial Hospital Nursing School in Winston Salem as well. After graduation Ruth’s independent spirit and encouragement from Sister Betty, gave her no hesitation to grab her newly acquired cap, sit it beside her in her car and head across the country to California.
Once in California Ruth realized she was where she was truly meant to be and started her new life at South Bay Hospital in Redondo Beach. Ruth found her calling as an ER nurse at Santa Paula Hospital after relocating to Fillmore in 1971. Later, Ruth left Santa Paula Hospital and went to work for a plastic surgeon in Oxnard. Ruth retired from nursing in the late nineties but never formally retired from working.
Ruth spent Sundays at her second home in Fillmore ~ Faith Community Church. Fellow parishioners could count on Ruth to greet them at the door with hugs and kisses, coordinate church events, mail out the weekly newsletters, help manage the church prayers, anything the church might need Ruth was eager and more than willing to do.
Ruth and her husband Don dedicated their lives’ work to the projects of the Fillmore Rotary. One of Ruth and Don’s favorite Rotary projects is the annual elementary school dictionary handout. Ruth was bestowed with the only known Rotary title of District Hugger. This honorable position was recognized at many West Coast meetings and by the International President ~~ all of course resulting in huge hugs.
Ruth loved her travels with her husband Don. Together, they took twenty three cruises that took them to many of the countries Don had been to during his long career with the U.S. Navy. These trips covered Europe and South America including places like Machu Picchu, Peru and multiple Panama Canal crossings.
When asked about the best gift her journey gave her the answer was always being a mother to her two children and then being a Grandmother to her grandchildren. Mama Ruth loved having her family by her side. She loved decorating for the holidays, cooking big meals, telling stories but most of all she enjoyed her family just being together.
In addition to a legacy of love, kindness and forever smiles Mama Ruthie will always be in the hearts, thoughts and prayers of her family ~~ Husband Don Gunderson of Fillmore, Son Scott Sanders and his wife JoAnn of Fillmore, Daughter Mindy Welch, her Husband Bill, Granddaughter Shelby and Grandson Koby of Ojai, Don's Daughters Jennifer Pimentel of Fillmore and Victoria Bogner, her Husband Jim and Grandsons JJ and Joshua of Carmel, Indiana.
Ruth’s loving and caring spirit will always be remembered and live on by the congregation of the Faith Community Church, and all of the people she touched and held in the City of Fillmore.

With her family by her side Mama Ruthie will have her final private graduation at the Bardsdale Cemetery where she will forever keep a special watch over her beloved Fillmore families.
As requested, Ruth’s family is privileged to extend hugs and kisses to all of her Doctors, their Staffs, the Palms Assisted Living in Ventura, Assisted Home Health Hospice and Caregivers, Dignity Memorial of Fillmore, members of the Fillmore Rotary, her Neighbors and all of the people of Fillmore who were along for her journey – there will never be enough thank yous for all you’ve done.

Abraham Diaz Carreño (2018)

Abraham migrated from Oaxaca, Mexico in 1944 where he went to Idaho until 1945 and came to California working in various types of ranch work.
In 1948 he started working for a grocery store in Santa Paula, Ca known as Siquideo’s Market for several years; from there he went to work for Chino’s Market in Santa Paula, Ca until August 1970. He opened his own business in Fillmore, Ca known as Abe’s Hi-Way Market. Abraham was always willing to help the citizens of Fillmore in any way he could, many local families went to his store for groceries. In 1995 he closed his store in Fillmore. Abraham served as President of the Rotary Club in Fillmore; he was a very well-liked man.
After he retired, he returned to his beloved home in Oaxaca, Mexico. Eventually he moved back with his family here in Fillmore and here he stayed until he passed away on May 4, 2018.
He will be deeply missed by all. May he Rest in Peace.
Services for Abraham will take place on Thursday, May 24, 2018, with Visitation at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 600 N Central Ave, Fillmore at 4:00pm; a Rosary will take place at 7:00pm. Followed by a Mass on Friday, May 25, 2018 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 10:00am followed by a Graveside at Bardsdale Cemetery 1698 S Sespe Rd, Fillmore.

Carlos P. Gutierrez (1927-2018)

Carlos P. Gutierrez was born on September 17, 1927 in Coachella, CA.
He passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at the age of 90 a resident of Fillmore and Ventura County resident for over 40 years.
Carlos entered the United States Marine Corp on September 24, 1945 at the age of 18. As a radio operator aboard C130’s he delivered troops and supplies during WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. During this time he logged thousands of air miles around the world, received numerous service awards and made lifelong friends along the way. One of proudest moments was when he received the Commanding Officers “Leatherneck Marksmanship Award” in 1962. He was honorably discharged in 1965. Retired from the USMC after 20 as a radio operator flying C130’s around the world serving our country he also retired as an electronic engineer from Lockheed Martin. His hobbies were Marine Corps history, aviation, avid reader, sports fan and Papa to a large family.
Carlos is preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and sister and his son-in-law.
Carlos is survived by his wife Eneida Gutierrez, daughter Shelly Rosenblad of Fillmore, CA, son Mike Gutierrez (spouse Stella) of Lancaster, CA, daughter Cindy Zanotti (spouse Tom) of Eagle Point, OR,
son Greg Gutierrez of Palmdale, CA, son Steve Gutierrez (spouse Barb) of Lancaster, CA,
15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Mike Arcelio Martinez Mulberry (1939-2018)

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Mike Arcelio Martinez Mulberry. He passed away on April 29, 2018 peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones at the age of 78.
Mike was born on September 19, 1939 in Denver, Colorado. Shortly after he was born he moved to Gallup, New Mexico to live with his maternal grandmother and his 11 aunts and uncles who were more like his brothers and sisters. At the age of 12 he went to live with his Mother and Stepfather in East Los Angeles, California.
Mike graduated from Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights in 1958 and joined the United States Air Force immediately after. Mike served in the Air Force from 1958 to 1961 and spent 2 years overseas in Spain. He was honorably discharged.
In 1964 Mike met the love of his life, Amelia Cardona and they married in 1966. Mike and Amelia raised 3 daughters and spent 52 years of marriage together. Mike was the true definition of a family man. He loved his family more than anything and always put them first. While raising a family and working full-time at various jobs through the Teamsters Union, Mike continued his education and graduated from East Los Angeles College in 1973 with an Associates in Arts. Afterward he attended the University of Southern California and graduated in 1976 with a Bachelors of Science in Public Administration. Mike went on to work for the State of California at the EDD office for 30 years.
Mike was a devoted Catholic, Husband and Father. He and Amelia attended Mass every weekend. They loved attending Dodger games and watching all the games on TV and they took as many trips to Las Vegas as they could. Mike was a huge boxing fan and always looked forward to watching the big fights with his family.
There are not enough words to describe the type of man Mike was. No one ever had a bad thing to say about him. He was incredibly smart, funny, hardworking, honest and always gave the best advice. Mike’s family and friends enjoyed having conversations with him and Mike always taught them a thing or two. Mike’s pride and joy were his daughters and grandchildren. He adored them more than anything and loved them unconditionally no matter how much trouble they got into at times. Mike was known by many, loved by all and will be greatly missed.
Mike is survived by his wife Amelia; daughters, Monica (John) Arias, Gloria Mulberry and Linda (Jeff) Savard; grandchildren Michael, Vanessa, Chelsea, Hailey, Justine, Luke and Jake; sister Lucy Tellez; brother Raymond “Monchie” Tellez Jr.; aunts, uncles and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mike is preceded in death by his Stepfather, Raymond Tellez Sr., his Mother, Charlotte Martinez Tellez and Grandmother Bonnie Montez Martinez.

Luis Villasenor “Big Lou Son Of Herk” (1947-2018)

Devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that the family of Luis Villasenor announces his passing on Saturday, May 5th, 2018 after a sudden and unexpected death.
Luis was born October 1, 1947 in Santa Paula, CA. He was the son of Herculano & Enriqueta Villasenor. He grew up in FILLMORE, CA were he resided until his time of death. Luis loved FILLMORE, he often referred to it as “God’s Country”. He attended and graduated from Chaminade High School. He was drafted into the Vietnam War in 1967 where he served for 2 years in the army. Upon returning from the war he met and married his best friend and the love of his life Pauline Tafoya Villasenor. They were married for 46 years. During those 46 years they were blessed with 4 beautiful children. Samantha, Louie Jr., Patrick, & Stacey. Luis was employed by the City of FILLMORE Public works where he worked for 34 years, and eventually retired in 2009.
After his retirement with plenty of time on his hands, he threw himself into his ministry. He enjoyed talking to people about Jehovah God and all of the blessing that the Bible foretells. All who knew him, knew what an avid sport fan he was. Luis loved the Rams, San Francisco Giants and Lakers. He knew all the stats and was always up to date on the latest trades and signing. Luis loved to watch his old westerns and classic movies. He enjoyed life to the fullest, but was always up for a good nap. Above all Luis loved to spend time with his family. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He attended all dance recitals, band performance, school functions and football games. Luis loved to talk to the kids in his infamous “Donald Duck Voice”. He loved to tease them and get them in trouble. He loved spoiling and spending time with them, going to the movies and taking turns picking out where to eat for dinner. He enjoyed going to the Rams games with his brother sons and grandsons.
Any time he was with his family and friends he would have a huge smile on his faces a smile that will be deeply missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents Herculano and Enriqueta Villasenor and nephew Alex Villasenor. He is survived by His wife Pauline Tafoya Villasenor, and daughter Samantha ( Son in Law Stephen ) Dick, Son Louie Jr ( Daughter in Law Ines ) Villasenor, Son Patrick ( Daughter in Law Aime ) Villasenor, Daughter Stacey ( Son in Law Ivan ) Richey. Maria Guadalupe Sierra Rodriguez (1936-2018)

It’s with great sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend Maria Guadalupe Sierra Rodriguez.
Maria was born on August 1, 1936 in Aquiles Serdan (Santiaguillo), Municipio de Zamora, Michoacan. She passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the age of 81.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband Rogelio Sierra Barbosa and grandson Dennis Lopez.
She is survived by her children: Modesto Sierra (Lisa), Rogelio Sierra (Suzie), Vivian Sierra (Nellie) and her grandchildren Rogelio Sierra Jr. Vanessa Sierra, David Sierra, Joseph Sierra, Gabriel Sierra, Cirena Medrano and many nieces and nephews and friends that will miss her dearly.

Barbara Ellsworth Bates (1921-2018)

It is with great sadness that the family of Barbara Bates announces her passing on Friday, April 13, 2018, after a brief illness. Barbara Lee Ellsworth was born in Fillmore March 9, 1921, the daughter of Howard Ellsworth and Gladys Clapperton. She grew up playing in the orchards and helping in the family’s hardware store. She graduated from Fillmore High in 1938 where she was a gold merit scholarship, cheerleader, and active in many organizations. One of her many accomplishments was 250 words per minute shorthand (which continued to stump her family when reading her recipes).
She attended Pomona College and graduated from Armstrong Business College and began teaching at McCleod High School. She married Kenneth Bates in 1943, and they eventually settled in Bakersfield in 1946 where Ken established his law practice.
Barbara served on numerous organizations, including Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, First Presbyterian and Northminster Presbyterian churches and AAUW. She was a Cub Scout, Bluebird and Brownie Leader. She dedicated more than 25 years to cooking at Guild House. She was active at Bakersfield Country Club as well as at home with family, cooking, sewing, knitting, and reading.
Her diverse passions included bridge and golf, roses and music boxes, travel and square dancing, and Fillmore High School reunions. She enjoyed multiple bridge clubs up until her eyesight began to fail. She loved the beach and spent many vacations at the Rincon. She and Ken traveled, first on international golf trips, followed by cruises, and later exploring the US in their RV. She had amazing skills ranging from the hula and ukulele learned in college to mandarin cooking, sewing design, and painting taken up later in her life.
Barbara will be lovingly remembered by her children, Kenneth Bates of Colorado Springs, Susan Bates Harbuck of Sandpoint Idaho, and Patricia Bates of Sheridan, MT as well as her dutch daughter Ria Maaskant of Gahanna, Ohio. She is also survived by five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Ken Bates, daughter Diane Murdock, and brother Jack Ellsworth.
Cremation has taken place and Barbara will be buried in Bardsdale Cemetery.

Robert G. Cruz (1937-2018)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Friend, Robert G. Cruz Sr. Robert passed away peacefully on April 18, 2018 at 3:25pm, at his home with family and friends by his side. Robert was born on June 9th 1937 in Fillmore, CA. He was a lifelong resident of Fillmore and he graduated with the class of 1957. He was active in baseball and basketball throughout his high school years. He joined the Army in 1960 and earned the badge of a sharpshooter. Robert worked for Northrop Grumman for 30 years, first in Research and Development and then as an Aerospace Engineer. He loved gardening and growing his own vegetables. He also loved the joy that it brought him to be able to share with his friends and family. He also enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. Robert is preceded in death by his first wife Frances Cruz, mother Maggie Cardona, sisters Rosie Gallardo, Ruby Riesgo and Madeline Davis. Robert is survived by his children Robert (Bobby) Cruz Jr., Sheila Cruz and Greg Cruz Sr., Daughter in-laws Tanya Gonzales and Jade Montes, and grandchildren Greg Cruz Jr., Evelyn Cruz, Tatiana Gonzales, and Tori Gonzales. His siblings Ronnie Riesgo, Angie Appleton, Norbert Riesgo, Marla Cervantez, Barbara Moreno, Sam Cardona, Bill Cardona, and Gloria (ChaCha) Ledesma as well as several nieces and nephews. Needless to say, many longtime friends too. Viewing will be at Faith Community Church, 355 D St. in Fillmore, CA on April 24th at 1pm to 6pm. Rosary will be at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1048 W. Ventura St. Fillmore, CA on April 24th at 7:45pm. Mass will be on April 25th at 10:00am, at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1048 W. Ventura St. Fillmore, CA. Then proceeding to Bardsdale Cemetery for graveside ceremony.

Dorothy Maxine Messer Haase (1928-2017)

"Dorothy Maxine Messer was born in Burbank, CA on May 2, 1928. She grew up in the town of Fillmore, the only child of Lloyd and Eva Messer. The Valedictorian of her high school class, she had a love of learning that lasted a lifetime. She married Winston Haase on November 28, 1948, and they welcomed their first child, Georgia Ann, the following year. The family grew again 7 years later, with the addition of Robert Scott.
Dorothy was an active participant in the community of Fillmore, organizing the Fillmore Festival for many years and helping found the Historical Museum. She spent many hours volunteering as a Band Booster for the high school and helped establish the Neighborhood Watch in town.
After spending her whole life in the same small town, Dorothy was ready for a new adventure. In 1996, she relocated to Ozark, MO, eager to experience life in a place with 4 seasons. She got involved in her new community by becoming a Master Gardener and a Red Hatter. She loved Jesus and used her gift of playing piano in worship until her last days.
Dorothy fell ill on Easter morning, and passed away on April 17th. She touched many people through her daily posts of encouragement on Facebook and will be greatly missed by friends near and far. Family meant everything to her, and she spoke lovingly about them to anyone who would listen. She became a great-great-grandma in February and was very proud of her 5 generations.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Winston, in 1983. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Georgia Beck and Lee, of Ozark, MO; her son Robert Haase and Lela, of Mannford, OK; her grandchildren Nathan Thompson, Lisa Stenfort, Jacob Haase, and Naomi Flowers; her great-grandchildren Tara Higgins, Amanda Thompson, Lindsay Thompson, Samantha Fair, Matthew Stenfort, Winston Haase and Oliver Haase; and her great-great granddaughter Lily Fair.
A graveside service will be held at the Bardsdale Cemetery, 1698 S. Sespe St, Fillmore, CA at 2:00 on April 20, 2018. A memorial service will be held at Fairview Baptist Church , 2144 State Hwy PP, Sparta, MO, at 2:00 pm on April 27, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jesus was Homeless, 1440 State Highway 248, Suite Q-442, Branson, MO 65616 ; or please donate to your favorite charitable cause in Dorothy’s honor."

Bruce Douglass Larson (1942-2018)

Bruce Douglass Larson, 75, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher, coach, and friend, of Fillmore passed away on March 26, 2018, of Adenocarcinoma at 7:57pm. His wife, children, and grandchildren surrounded him at home during his passing to be with the Lord and join his daughter, Marci, in Heaven.
Bruce was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 20, 1942, three minutes before his identical twin brother Roger was born. He graduated from Chaffey High School in 1960 then received his AA from Chaffey College in 1962. He then transferred to California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in Technical Arts and graduated in 1965. Bruce received his first teaching job in 1965 at Serrano Junior High and then Montclair Junior High. Bruce earned his Masters degree from L.A. State then moved to Fillmore where he began teaching high school drafting then switched to junior high woodshop which was a better fit. During the summer months Bruce worked a variety of jobs over the years including restaurant managing, drafting, surveying, civil engineer work, and a ranger at Lake Piru, to name a few.
Bruce was an athlete and as a youth he regularly wrestled, rode his bike, and played basketball with his brothers and friends. He competed in football, basketball, and track at Chaffy High School then played football and threw shot put and discus on the track and field team at Chaffey College. While at Cal Poly he specialized in track and field.
During his first year of teaching, Bruce, being frugal with his money, was persuaded by his twin brother Roger to go on a blind date with an NFL Rams song leader, Tessa Smith, to get free tickets into the NFL games. They quickly fell in love and married shortly thereafter on April 5, 1966. They raised three wonderful children Marci, Loni, and Eric and are blessed with nine grandchildren.
Bruce loved spending time with his family and grandchildren enjoying fishing and campfires at the beach, vacations in Yosemite, playing card games, frisbee golf, and watching the grandchildren play sports. Bruce not only had a love for his family but also had a love for old cars, especially ‘32’s and ’57 Chevy’s, which he restored and enjoyed his whole life. These interests lead to the excitement in attending car shows, drag races, swap meets, and flea markets which was enjoyed with family and friends alike. Bruce also restored antique furniture, improved his home, watched sports, and collected old things such as model trains, license plates, and car parts. Most of all he simply just wanted to be around those he loved, to visit and joke with them.
All people loved Bruce. He was the light that brightened any day with his big smile and wave. His students called him a legend and one of their favorite teachers of all times because he was a teacher who cared and showed kindness. As said by a former student, “You made me feel special and inspired me and I’m better because of you.” Another commented, “You can’t begin to comprehend how much love there is for you; you helped change the world to make it more beautiful.”
A celebration of life will take place on Friday, April 27, from 2-5pm at the Fillmore/Piru Veterans Memorial Building, 511 Second Street in Fillmore. All are welcome to attend.

It is with an impossible sadness that we announce the loss of Chap "Chappy" Morris Jr., who passed away suddenly on March 16, 2018, leaving behind the family he coveted and the thousands of friends he made during his remarkable life journey. It would take volumes to explain the meaning Chap held for so many-for his was a life of generosity, devotion, infectious laughter, and true interest and friendship in the countless people fortunate enough to cross his path. No one knows this better than the centerpieces of his life: his loving wife, Lori, and his adored daughters, Sydney and Maggie.Chap was born August 5, 1961, at St. John's Memorial hospital in Oxnard, the second of the four children of John Chapman Morris and Geraldine Doud Morris. He came into the world boasting a head of red hair that exclaimed Here I Am!-and it was that red hair that would make him instantly recognizable to so many, no matter the size of the crowd.Chap grew up in Fillmore with his siblings-elder sister Laurie, younger sister Tina, and younger brother Bill-and was surrounded by the many members of his generational Ventura county families. He was imbued with the traditions held by these families-most importantly, an adherence to the Catholic faith-and of treating all human beings with dignity and respect. He learned his family's primary business, a multi-line auto dealership in Fillmore, at a young age- first from his grandfather, William L. Morris, and then his father, Chappy Sr.-as well as horsemanship, the tenets of farming, and a love and respect of the outdoors.Chap attended St. Bonaventure high school, where he excelled in athletics and lettered in a variety of sports, before playing football for Ventura College and then moving onto the University of Southern California. It was there that he completed a Business degree within the Entrepreneurship program, created endless pranks and laughter within the Kappa Sigma fraternity, and was in the right place at the right time, meeting his love, Lori. He proposed to her, in grand Chappy style, at the Rose Bowl game-of course utilizing the stadium scoreboard screen in the process-and they married on June 30, 1990.Chap was probably best known in the community as the president of the William L. Morris Chevrolet dealership in Fillmore-his "Get Happy with Chappy" radio and television ads could not be missed-but his passions were extensive. He was a third-generation member of both the Rancheros Visitadores and Rancheros Adolfo riding groups, serving on the board of the latter, and was a skilled horseman, winning a wall full of ribbons in the various riding events through the decades. He was a major donor to USC, volunteered and donated to more charitable events and boards than can be listed here, and was a standard go-to for anyone organizing a fundraiser in Ventura county.But for all these pursuits, Chap's greatest passion and joy was for his daughters, Sydney and Maggie. No conversation was complete without a recounting of their latest feats, with Chap's face lifted to its widest charismatic smile in love and admiration. They each carry individual and distinct traits of their father, and there is no mistaking Chap in their voices-joking, cajoling, touching, and understanding.Chap's greatest talent was quite simple: he loved people, he lived for people, and he just couldn't get enough of them. In his mind, people were not good-they were great. His capacity and empathy for his fellow man was endless, and as his daily encounters accumulated throughout his life, the rollcall of his friends stretched beyond any normal person's line of sight. Early in their marriage, Lori gave Chap a leather-bound address book for Christmas, and watched as he transcribed contact information, adding two names in every space for one, nearly filling the book. At the end of that year, she gave Chap another with more pages, and watched as he transcribed each name from the first book-now completely full and without a space in the margins. And so it went, year after year, as the book got larger and the list grew to many thousands.Chap was a human connector-what sociologists have referred to as a hub person-that created layers of familiarity and friendship among those that would otherwise be unknown to one another, leading to exponential connections between so many. He possessed unusual language skills, including fluency in Spanish extending to regional colloquialisms, as well as the ability to collect phrases from anyone speaking a foreign language, and this allowed connection into any culture introduced to him. His interest in everyone he met was genuine and intense, and manifested itself in a generosity that humbled even his closest friends.That is the essence of the precious humanity he possessed. So many know and love each other because of Chap Morris. Richard Hernandez (1960–2018)

It is with our deepest sadness that Richard Hernandez went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on January 21, 2018. Richard lived in Fillmore California until he moved to Mount Vernon , Missouri in 1987 where he remained for the past 30 years. Richard was employed by Silgan Containers in Mount Vernon , Missouri for 28 years. Richard is survived by father Manual Hernandez of Chino Valley, AZ and his sons Kevin (Tamiaya Hernandez) and Steven (Mandy Hernandez) and his beautiful grandchildren, Juliun, Isaac, Kyleigh, Kyah and Adrian, with two additional grandchildren on the way. Richard is proceeded in death by his mother Rosa F Hernandez of Oxnard , California.

Virginia June Huestis (1932-2018)

Virginia June Huestis completed her life’s journey in Oak Harbor, Washington, on March 7, 2018, at the age of 85.
Virginia was born on September 5, 1932, in Los Angeles, the daughter of Calvin Trowbridge and the former Margaret Allen. She was adopted by her stepfather, Pharos LeBard, at an early age and lived with her parents and younger brother John in the Ventura County communities of Piru, Fillmore, and Ojai. She attended Buckhorn School in Piru and Fillmore schools, graduating with the Fillmore High Class of 1950.
She began work as a teenager at Harry Lechler’s store in Piru. The exactitude she learned from high school business teacher Miss Hobenicht served her well in positions with schools, churches, financial institutions, and other employers.
She also began volunteer service as a teenager, leading the area in collecting scrap metal for the war effort. In recognition of her service, she was invited to christen a ship.
Virginia married Robert F. (“Bob”) Huestis of Fillmore, a veteran of that war, on October 11, 1951. They enjoyed 60 happy years together and raised three children. Dearly loved by her children and grandchildren, Virginia freely shared her time and treasure encouraging their interests, attending their many activities far and near, and making her home their favorite venue.
Ever active in the community, Virginia and Bob built the Fillmore Jaycees agri-cultural display at the Ventura County Fair in the 1950s. A long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday school, served meals to the bereaved, hosted many guests and events in their home, and served at countless wedding receptions.
In 1970, Virginia and Bob left the comforts of home and joined New Tribes Mission (now Ethnos 360) of Sanford, Florida, which specializes in evangelizing unreached people groups. After preparatory training in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Missouri, they spent five years in Papua New Guinea, where Bob was in charge of purchasing and shipping for mission personnel located in remote areas of the country and Virginia maintained the books and operated a guest house for mission personnel in the coastal town of Wewak.
Bob was diagnosed with a chronic form of leukemia and suffered a back injury while on furlough in 1978, resulting in their retirement from the mission. Virginia returned to the work force as a bookkeeper and later as a utilities clerk at Fillmore City Hall. They moved to Ventura in the late 1980s. She retired as a medical transcriptionist in the Pathology Department of Community Memorial Hospital in 2005.
They moved to Fairview, Kansas, in 2007 to live near son Sam and his wife Linda, who had just established a home there. As Bob’s health declined, Virginia was at his side constantly until his death in 2012, when she moved to Oak Harbor, Washington, to live with daughter Alice and her husband Jim. She enjoyed many visits from family from around the country and looked forward to heavenly reunions as Parkinson’s disease took its toll on her body.
Virginia will be missed by children Sam Huestis of Ventura and Fairview, Alice Mikos of Oak Harbor, and Margaret LaRue of Ventura; grand¬children Nathan Huestis, Ryan Huestis, Kimberlee Mikos, Matthew Mikos, Christina Mikos Anderson, Aimee LaRue Sywulka, Rachel LaRue Culver, and Bobby LaRue; and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her firstborn, Robert Mitchell Huestis, and husband Bob.
Interment will be at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. The family requests that Virginia be remembered by gifts, acts of kindness, or service to someone in need in lieu of flowers.

Rosa Maria Camberos de Cobian (1943-2018)

It is with great pain and sadness that we announce the loss of our beloved mother Rosa Maria Camberos de Cobian who went home to be with our lord with her family by her side.
She was born December 7th, 1943 in Tuxcacuesco, Jalisco Mexico. And passed peacefully at her home in Fillmore, Ca. on the day of March 9th, 2018.
She was preceded in death by her parents Arturo Camberos and Josefina Pizano, and 1 sister & 3 brothers. Rosa is survived by her husband of 50 years Jose Q. Cobian, daughter Maria R. Estrada (Michael), sons Jose J. Cobian (Martha) and Arturo Cobian. Rosa had 5 beautiful grandchildren, Michael Joseph Estrada Jr., Vanessa Nicole Estrada, Johnny JR. Cobian, Yanelli Marie Cobian, and Natalie Rose Cobian. Also survived by 5 sisters and 7 brothers. And numerous nieces and nephews and loving family and friends.
Rosa worked for Olga factory as a seamstress for 16 years. She also worked a few years at Cloughs pharmacy on Central in Fillmore, Ca. She also provided child care and grew very close and came to love the many children that dearly call her "grandma".
Rosa was very social and because of her kind heart and outgoing personality had many dear friends that never forgot her in her time of need. She very much enjoyed social events, especially when listening to mariachi, and singing and dancing, as well as having a margarita. Her greatest joy was watching her children and grandchildren accomplishes. She always loved having her family around, if it wasn't cooking for them or barbecuing, it was going on vacations with them.
The family would like to thank Dr. Alexander Meyer and staff as well as the staff at CMH, Quest Diagnostics in Santa Paula, Assisted Home Hospice, Rolling Oaks Radiology, Dr. Byung Lee, and St. Francis of Assisi clergy.
We would like to thank her family, friends, and neighbors of 40 years on Lora Lane for their love and support throughout her beautiful life.
The recitation of the rosary will be held on Friday March 23, 2018 at 9:30am followed with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 1048 W. Ventura Street in Fillmore Ca. Burial to follow at Bardsdale Cemetery 1698 So. Sespe Street in Fillmore, Ca.

Jose "Joe" Tello (1927-2018)

Jose "Joe" Tello, age 90, of Fillmore, California passed away on Thursday March 8, 2018. Jose was born October 21, 1927 in Texas.
Jose worked for High Rise Construction for 25 years and enjoyed camping, gardening, RV'ing and exploring the United States.
Jose is survived by; his beautiful wife of 64 years Irene Tello, sons Donald Lee Tello (Natalie), Michael Tello (Diane), daughter Cynthia Tello Enriquez (Felipe Enriquez), son David Tello (Ofelia), 11 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren.
Jose is preceded in death by; his parents Juan and Irene Tello, Brothers Juan and Mauro, Sister Eva, Grandchildren Katie and Andrea Tello and Daughter-in-law Diane Tello.

Dale Sherman Palmer (1932-2018)

Dale Sherman Palmer, 85, went to be with the Lord peacefully at his home in Bardsdale, on Friday, March 9, 2018 embraced by his children.
Dale was born on Oct. 21, 1932 in Oxnard, Ca. to Graham B. and Beulah Moehl Palmer, and raised on the family farm in Bardsdale. He ran track and played football for Fillmore High. He continued his education studying agriculture and running track at Cal Poly Pomona. In 1952, Dale married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Gathright. With time and love, they welcomed 3 children, Janet, Susan, and Donald. He continued to work and tend the family farm and was the manager of Fillmore Irrigation Company for 32 years. 42 years of his life were spent wearing out 3 tractor loaders cleaning up floods, moving dirt, and clearing citrus groves.
Dale’s work was a representation of who he was and he loved what he did. In addition to working, he enjoyed golfing, bowling, tennis, camping, water skiing, fishing and later the luxury of cruising the world; as long as he was surrounded by the ones he loved, he did it all. He was an active and dedicated life member of the Fillmore Lions Club and involved with Fillmore Little League for over 40 years, coaching or umpiring.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Ann, son-in-law John Foy, and brother Roger Palmer. He is survived by his sister-in-law Roberta Palmer, children Janet Foy, Susan & Keith McLain and Donald & Susan Palmer, grandchildren Jason & Carrie Foy, Jodie & Patrick Sewell, Vanessa & Jason Palmer, Tim & Jenn McLain, Daniel & Alex Davis, Daniel Palmer, Michelle Davis and Greg Palmer, along with 13 great grandchildren.
There will be a Celebration of Life Saturday, March 17th, 2 pm at Faith Community Church, 355 D St., Fillmore. Followed by a reception barbeque at Elkins Ranch golf course at 3:15. Ila Margaret "Peggy" Myers (1922-2018)

Mom was born in Fillmore on May 23, 1922. She was born to William Crowner and Pearl Oliver Crowner. She lived in Fillmore until the second grade, when the family moved to Ojai for 4 years. They returned to live in Bardsdale where she attended Bardsdale Elementary School. Mom graduated from Fillmore High School in 1940. She then attended Ventura College where she received a teaching credential.
Mom married her high school sweetheart Carl Myers in 1942. Carl enlisted in the Army Air corps shortly thereafter where he became a B-24 pilot. Mom followed him in the service until he was deployed to England. She then returned to Bardsdale where their daughter Terri Ann was born in 1944. When Carl returned home from overseas they remained in Fillmore, where he became a partner in the oilfield and ranch supply company of Crowner and Myers. In 1956 their son Jim was born. Peggy was a stay at home mom until 1964 when she went to work as a teacher’s aide and substitute teacher for the Fillmore School District. Later she became a teacher at the Boswell School for Developmentally Disabled Children. Later Carl became a Real Estate Agent in Fillmore.
Peggy was an active member in the Fillmore Order of Eastern Star, Fillmore Ebell Club, and of the Fillmore Church of Religious Science. She always saw the good in each person and in every situation. Many times mom would say it is all good. Mom loved to play bridge, a good shopping trip, and any opportunity to go out to eat. Most of all she loved her family, her children, grandchildren, her great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She also loved her caregiver Aracely who gave her wonderful loving care for over 12 years. After retirement mom and dad were able to travel extensively and had a wonderful time doing it.
Mom passed away peacefully at home with her family nearby on February 21, 2018. Mom was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl, her granddaughter DeAnna and son in law Mike. Mom is survived by her daughter Terri Hastings, her son Jim Myers (wife Janet), Grandchildren Derrik Hastings (wife Michelle), Melanie Myers Hazlett (husband Chad) and Great grandchildren Joslynn, Charlie, Jordan, Griffin and Felicia.
Mom will be greatly missed here on earth but we will be happy to see her again in the hereafter.
A memorial will be held at the Bardsdale Cemetery on Friday, March 9 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity.

Cynthia Stocker Wileman (1948-2018)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved daughter, sister, mother and grandmother, Cynthia (Cindy) Sue Stocker Wileman. Cindy passed away on February 25, 2018 with her loving family at her side.
Cindy was born on Easter, March 28, 1948 in Santa Paula to William and Patricia Stocker of Fillmore. She spent a great deal of time with her sister, Melinda at the family owned Stocker’s Department Store and later at the popular teenage hangout, Tip Top Drive-In, where her father put her to work. Exceptionally beautiful and vibrant, she was a song leader at Fillmore high school where she graduated with the class of 1966. She was honored to be named Miss Fillmore and Miss Ventura County Fair. During her reign, she cut the ribbon to open the newly built Highway 126 and took the inaugural drive with the mayor of Santa Paula and other dignitaries.
She married her childhood sweetheart, Ross Wileman, in 1967 and together they raised three children, Lori, Melanie and Ryan. As a homemaker, she liked cooking and sewing for her family. She was a devoted mother spending countless hours volunteering in her children’s classrooms, driving on field trips and helping her daughter Lori’s cheerleading squad raise money by painting house numbers on curbs. She treasured family vacations at cabins on Faria Beach and waterskiing on numerous lakes, including Lake Powell.
Each fall, Fillmore families enjoyed purchasing pumpkins the family grew on local land and sold from their front yard on Highway 126. Later, Cindy worked for Mirage Clothing where she paired her sense of style with her love for people. She proudly ran Wileman’s Produce and later Cindy’s Produce. She also worked for Fillmore & Western Railway Company.
Years passed and Cindy met Jess Leon. They spent 29 years together, during which they raised Jess’s 3 granddaughters; A highlight of raising the girls was cheering them on at their softball games at local and state levels. The Santa Ynez Valley was one of their favorite places where they took countless trips to the Chumash Casino. Cindy always had a green thumb and at their home on Blaine Avenue, she took pleasure in working in their yard with the help of her son Ryan.
Cindy had a big heart for children and adults alike. She spent many hours involved in her grandchildren’s lives and took pride in all their accomplishments. She could always be counted on to attend their sporting events and delighted in having them over for frequent sleepovers. After the passing of her daughter, Melanie’s children would often go to her home after school to receive love, comfort, encouragement and lessons in responsibility. Cindy loved catching up with high school friends for lunch and at the annual Fillmore Alumni Banquet. Her many Facebook friends were greeted each day by her cheerful good morning posts and were encouraged by her courageous and positive attitude, despite her many health challenges.
Cindy was preceded in death by her grandparents, Samuel and Helen Stocker, Floyd and Doris Spangler and her daughter Melanie Wileman. She is survived by her parents William and Patricia Stocker; daughter Lori Bennett (Donny), son Ryan Wileman (Angelo); grandchildren Alyssa and Tim Bennett, Frank and Keanna Lozano, Carmen, Cody, Mathew and Kailyn Pineda, Brianna Wileman, Elena, Elisha and Enessa Lopez and great- granddaughter Riley Lozano; sister Melinda Naas (Chuck); nephew Jeff Naas (Kelly), nieces Lisa Given (Jessica) and Laura Counts (Chad), and numerous great nieces, nephews and step children.

Visitation will be held at Skillin-Carroll Mortuary, 600 N. Central Ave., Fillmore on Wednesday, March 7 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Graveside service will take place at Bardsdale Cemetery, Fillmore on Thursday, March 8 at 11:00 A.M.
