On Tuesday, detectives arrested a local day laborer after he was identified as the suspect in a stabbing that occurred near Hampshire Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard, on August 30, 2009.

Genaro Hernandez was arrested at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility, in Ventura, in connection with the stabbing that left a 30-year-old man in the Intensive Care Unit at Los Robles Hospital, with a collapsed lung.

The incident began when the victim was robbed August 13th of his cellular telephones while at the day laborer gathering site on Hampshire Road. During the robbery investigation, the victim was contacted by one of the robbers and offered his phones back for a price.

That suspect was arrested on August 26th for possession of stolen property and extortion. The investigation then focused on Genaro Hernandez, who initially identified himself to deputies as Fidel Robledo. On August 30, 2009, Hernandez found the victim walking on Crescent Way and stabbed him in the chest with a knife. The suspect then fled the scene, dropping the knife nearby.

The victim staggered to the nearby Alliance Gas Station, where he was able to summon help.

Two hours after the stabbing, Hernandez was arrested after he committed a residential burglary at a house in a nearby Westlake Hills neighborhood. He was booked for burglary, under the name of Jose Rojas, which was the name he provided to the arresting officer at that time.

Because he is an undocumented immigrant and has given law enforcement officials different names during prior contacts, Hernandez’ correct name and date of birth are not known.

Hernandez is being held in lieu of $550,000.00 bail for attempted murder, residential burglary, and an immigration hold.

On September 4th, Senior Deputy Clark and Deputy Hollowell, resident Lockwood Valley patrol deputies, were patrolling Highway 33 between Lockwood Valley Road and Rose Valley, when they stopped a car for a vehicle code violation. During the stop, the deputies discovered that a passenger in the vehicle, Gabino Ambriz, was in possession of approximately one and one half pounds of freshly processed marijuana and a 9mm handgun. The subsequent investigation revealed that the marijuana seized during this incident was grown in a large marijuana garden in Ventura County’s backcountry. Investigators learned that the suspects were armed to protect the illegal cultivations.

The Sheriff’s Department urges those who use the Los Padres National Forest to be cautious when venturing off marked trails and roadways. If suspicious activity is observed, please notify your local law enforcement agency immediately.

On September 8 at about 7:05 p.m. a witness reported finding a dead body along the shore of McGrath State Beach. Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputies responded immediately and discovered the body as a deceased male.

The body is described as an unidentified white male, 50’s to 60’s in age. The body was located north of the Edison power plant. Sheriff’s Major Crimes determined the death as suspicious. An autopsy will be performed on September 9.

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) The last holiday of summer 2009 is not the time to let your guard down while driving. Motorists need to make sure they do everything possible to ensure a safe and enjoyable weekend for themselves, their passengers, and everyone else on the road they share.”

The Labor Day weekend is a Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) for the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Starting Friday, September 4, at 6:01 p.m. through midnight on Monday, September 7, every available officer will be on the road keeping a vigilant eye out for errant drivers. They will be on the lookout for violators of the three major causes of highway deaths: speeding, drinking and driving, and not wearing seat belts.

Last year 40 people died statewide on Labor Day weekend on California highways. Of those killed in CHP jurisdiction, more than half were not wearing seat belts.

“Make sure that you and your family safely wrap up a great summer. Observe all laws, drive defensively and buckle up your loved ones,” stated CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.

According to the CHP, motorists can help assure their own safety by doing some very simple things when they get behind the wheel:
• Buckle up, driver and all occupants, every time on every trip.
• Observe all speed limits.
• Never mix alcohol and driving. Choose a designated driver or be one for your passengers.
• If you are making a long drive this weekend, leave early, make frequent rest stops to stay alert, and do not let delays change your driving behavior.

“We want everybody’s holiday to be filled with pleasant memories. Join the CHP in making that happen by driving safely throughout the Labor Day holiday,” said Commissioner Farrow.

Labor Day, 2009 is an Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.), which emphasizes added patrols on interstate highways such as I-5, I-15 and I-80.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement regarding the deaths of Los Angeles County Fire Captain Tedmund “Ted” Hall, of San Bernadino County, and Firefighter Specialist Arnaldo “Arnie” Quinones, of Palmdale:

“Fire Captain Ted Hall and Fire Specialist Arnie Quinones were extraordinary California heroes who worked tirelessly to protect our communities. Maria and I join all Californians in expressing our appreciation for their courageous efforts and sacrifice. They will be forever remembered by the people of California for their selfless and heroic work.”

Both died while battling the Station fire in Los Angeles County. Hall, 47, was a 26-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Quinones, 35, was an eight-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

In honor of Fire Captain Hall and Fire Specialist Quinones, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.

Fillmore Police are investigating the circumstances that lead to a Fillmore man being stabbed on Friday August 28th at about 10:15 a.m

The victim, Jose Murillo, 20 years, suffered a punctured lung and was taken to Santa Paula Hospital. He was listed in serious condition.

The case is under investigation and appears to be an incident of domestic violence. A female juvenile suspect has been identified as the suspect and is in custody for the crime.

As you know, a horrific fire is underway in North Los Angeles County.

My prayers go out to the families of fallen firefighters Tedmund Hall, of San Bernardino County, and Arnaldo Quinones, of Palmdale. Both brave men died when the vehicle they were driving was "overrun by a fast-moving fire which approached Fire Camp 16 on the Station Fire incident,'' said a statement from L.A. County fire.

The fire, known as the Station Fire, started burning on Aug. 26 in the area of La Canada on State Route 2, Angeles Crest Highway, in Los Angeles County.
As of August 31 at 6 a.m.:

There are 2,575 personnel assigned to this incident.

Thousand Oaks deputies arrested Jonathan Hunt Tuesday, after Ventura County Probation Officers discovered a large quantity of stolen property in Hunt’s apartment during a routine probation search.

The items recovered include portable GPS units, i-Pods, and other portable electronics. Deputies seized more than fifty items from Hunt’s apartment. Hunt was already on probation for commercial burglary. Part of his probation terms allow law enforcement officers to search his property without a search warrant or probable cause.

Hunt told investigators that he steals mostly from unlocked cars, and took responsibility for at least 20 such thefts in the local area recently. Hunt said he walks through neighborhoods at night doing “door pulls,” which is commonly known among thieves as an easy way to steal property from unlocked cars.

Hunt is being held at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility in Ventura on a single count of receiving stolen property. His bail has been set at $20,000.00. Investigators would like to remind residents to remove valuable property from their vehicles and lock them to avoid being victims of this type of criminal activity.

On the morning of 08-25-09, at about 6:20 a.m., a city of Moorpark resident (woman) reported that a green Ford Mustang was slowly following her while she was out jogging on Tierra Rejada Road. The woman confronted the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle about his intentions. The woman described the driver as a Hispanic male. When the woman confronted the driver, the suspect remained in the vehicle and exposed himself to the woman. A passerby in another vehicle rendered aid to the woman jogger. The driver of the older model green Ford Mustang drove away from the scene. Moorpark patrol deputies spoke with the victim and a witness who rendered assistance to the victim. These persons described the vehicle as a forest green, late 1990’s Ford Mustang two-door vehicle, with possible collision damage on the passenger side of the vehicle. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male, about late 20’s in age, dark skin, and slender to medium build. CONTINUED »

Thousand Oaks Police Investigators have been investigating multiple incidents in which wallets have been taken from the victims’ purses that have been placed in shopping carts. Since June 1, 2009, the Thousand Oaks Police Department has had 13 reported cases in which an unknown suspect has targeted elderly women while they are shopping.

During each incident, the victims have left their purses in the child seat portion of the shopping cart. The victims were distracted looking at items on the shelves. The suspect approached the shopping carts and removed the wallets from inside the purses without the victims suspecting anything.

The suspect has been described as a Hispanic male approximately 35 to 40 years of age, 5’ 8” to 5’ 11” and 165 to 185 lbs.

It is strongly suggested to be aware of your personal belongings while shopping and make sure not to leave your purse unattended in the shopping cart. Keeping the shopping cart close by is not always enough. The suspect has been able to remove the wallets even when the cart is in close proximity to the victims. It is believed the suspect is also responsible for additional thefts in the Simi Valley and Los Angeles County areas. The investigation of these crimes is continuing.

On August 18, 2009, at about 9:00 p.m. Camarillo Deputies stopped a subject in the 1200 block of Crestview Ave. While talking with the suspect he fled down a steep hill and escaped. Further investigation by the deputies revealed the subject was in a stolen car from Oregon.
On August 19th, at about 11:15 a.m., a female reported to the Camarillo Police Department that she was the victim of a carjacking. While the victim was walking into the Sportsman Restaurant, 4462 Central Avenue, the suspect confronted her and demanded her car keys. After a short struggle, the suspect took the victim’s keys and fled the area in her car. Several deputies responded to the scene and a search was conducted, without success. The suspect description in this case matched the suspect that fled from deputies on August 18th.
At about 3:45 p.m., Eric Plourde was attempting to drive the victim’s car across the border into Mexico near San Ysidro. U.S. Custom’s agents attempted to conduct a traffic stop, and Plourde fled in the car. After a brief vehicle pursuit, Plourde crashed and fled on foot. U.S. custom’s agents were able to apprehend Plourde a short distance away.
Plourde is also suspected of committing another robbery, on his way to the border, in the Carlsbad area. A woman reported in Carlsbad that she was walking in a parking lot when a man drove by her, and without getting out of his car he ripped her purse off of her shoulder. She was apparently injured slightly during the crime. Plourde was found in possession of the woman’s purse when he was arrested.
Plourde was picked up today by two Camarillo Detectives and booked at the Main Jail in Ventura for robbery, carjacking, and stealing a car. Bail was set at $100,000.00

On July 6, 2009 damage to a fiber-optic cable affected many Ventura County residents’ ability to call for help in the event of an emergency. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services is continuing its commitment to community disaster preparedness by educating residents on how to report an emergency if such an incident were to occur again in our county.

1. To report an emergency, dial 9-1-1 to be connected to an emergency dispatcher. 9-1-1 lines are reserved for emergency calls to report a crime in progress, a fire, or to request an ambulance. Using 9-1-1 for non-emergency calls may delay the arrival of help for people caught in real emergencies. If you are unable to call 9-1-1 from your landline phone, try calling from a cellular phone.

2. If you are unable to reach an emergency dispatcher by dialing 9-1-1, call the seven-digit telephone number of the agency you are trying to reach. Please refer to your local telephone directory for a list of the local seven-digit police and fire telephone numbers.

3. If you are unable to use the telephone, please go to your nearest police or fire station to report an emergency. Knowing where your local police and fire stations are located is an excellent way to be prepared for any emergency.

On July 8, 2009, at approximately 2200 hrs. deputies from the Fillmore Station responded to a shots fired call in the 300 block of Clay St., in Fillmore. When deputies arrived they found that rival gang members had confronted the victim, a known gang member. The rival gang members shot at the victim as he was driving away.

On 7-17-09 at 0630, the Fillmore Special Enforcement Detail with the assistance of deputies and officers from the Santa Paula Police Department and Ventura Police Department, conducted search warrants at four locations in the City of Fillmore and one location in the City of Moorpark. This was in response to the gang related shooting that occurred on 7-8-09. The following persons were arrested as a result of the search warrants:

Camarillo Police Graffiti Investigators along with investigators from the Camarillo Police Special Enforcement Detail made three arrests this past week after concluding a lengthy investigation into a rash of graffiti vandalisms in Camarillo.

On 8/14/09, detectives arrested Connor Kelley at his home in Camarillo for felony vandalism. Suspects Joshua Morningstar and Joshua Mattern were arrested on 8/20/09. All three suspects have been booked into the Ventura County Jail on felony vandalism charges. The graffiti began in Camarillo approximately 16 months ago and steadily increased over the recent months. There are over 40 documented vandalisms with damages approaching ten thousand dollars. Areas targeted with graffiti varied, but were usually all highly visible to the public. The suspects are not associated with a criminal street gang but are all members of a self-proclaimed graffiti tagging crew. There has been an increase in this type of vandalism from tagging crews in recent years.

This investigation is ongoing and a fourth suspect is outstanding and is believed to have fled the state to avoid arrest. Investigators will seek a warrant for his arrest.

On 8-13-09, Thousand Oaks Police were called to the 300 block of Wynn Court for a suspicious vehicle. Upon the arrival of deputies, they found Jesse Israelson and a 17 year old juvenile inside the vehicle, sleeping. During the contact, Thousand Oaks Police conducted a search that revealed stolen property, which included several Ipods, GPS devices, cell phones, digital cameras, jewelry, wallets, credit cards, and pain medication.

Follow up investigation by Thousand Oaks Detectives determined the stolen property belongs to several victims of thefts from motor vehicles. These victims reside in the City of Thousand Oaks as well as the Oak Park area and Agoura Hills.

Investigators determined the subjects would comb the neighborhoods, on foot, checking for unlocked car doors. It is estimated they entered at least one hundred vehicles in the past few weeks and stole items from a majority of those vehicles.

Both subjects were arrested for possession of stolen property. The juvenile was cited and released to a parent while Israelson was booked at the East Valley Jail.

The Thousand Oaks Police Department wants to remind the public to remove valuable property from their vehicles when left unattended, and secure all the doors and windows.
