On 12/07/2025, at about 8:50 PM, deputies from the Fillmore Station responded to the 1000 block of Oliver Street in Fillmore reference a shooting which had just occurred. Upon arrival, deputies located evidence indicating the incident occurred on Burson Lane south of Oliver Street.
Detectives are actively investigating this shooting and are asking for the public’s assistance for any information regarding the incident. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Detective Christopher Vorzimer (805) 384-4731 or Detective Nicole Grover at (805) 384-4722. Tips can also be submitted through Ventura County Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477), where callers can remain anonymous.

On Saturday, December 6, 2025, at 10am Central Avenue was filled with parade goers for the Annual Fillmore Lions Club Christmas Parade. Santa rode down on Fillmore Fire Engine 91 as he waved to the crowd along with other Fire Fighters. While dozen of local groups and organizations, marching bands, school and more also participated marching or riding in this year’s parade wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting the council had multiple presentations such as the Oath of Office for incoming District 1 Council Member Mario Rodriguez (pictured left), Mark Dominguez (Fillmore/Piru Veteran’s Parade Grand Marshal) was recognized for his honorary service to the country and community (pictured right). The council also awarded Nancy Rodriguez the Community Spirit Award, as well as recognized and thanked sponsors who contributed to the Fillmore Christmas tree lighting on Sunday, November 30. On Sunday, December 7, the Fillmore Fire Foundation kicked off their Holiday Toy Drive by hosting their annual BBQ Chicken Dinner Fundraiser to collect donations that are used to purchase hundreds of toys for children in the Fillmore area. Collection drop-off boxes for new toys were also available at the Fillmore Police and City Fire Station, City Hall, local banks and Diamond Realty. From 5pm to 7pm folks were able to swing by the Fillmore City Fire Station for their meal. A complete chicken dinner meal was prepared for anyone wanting to donate $15 or a brand-new toy valued at $15 or more, to be given away at the Community Holiday Giveaway event to be held on December 13, 2025 @ 9:00 A.M. The Piru Neighborhood Council presents the Annual Piru Christmas Parade and Festival will be Saturday, December 13, at 12pm and the festival will be from 1pm -5pm.
Salvador “Chava” Hurtado made his way to Piru in 1960. Chava joined the United States Army from 1967-1969 and upon his return to Piru is when he met Roise Zavala a lifelong resident of Piru. Chava and Rosie married 1972 and have 5 boys: Salvador Jr., Phillip, Michael, Jamie and Jason. They are also blessed with 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Together Chava and Rosie have been serving our community for over 55 years and have contributed to some of the biggest events for our community, including re-enactment of the Stations of the Cross and the Jamaicas that went on for over 40 years. Other contributions and groups they were a part of are The Brownies, Cub Scouts, Disaster Assistance Response Team, Indian Guides, Piru Parks and Recreation Commission, Piru Jaycees, Piru School PTA, San Salvador Church Club, Sacred Heart Society, and Men’s Club at San Salvador Church. For over 17 years they served the Piru Little League as coaches, team mom or working the snack bar. Chava coached the only team to bring home a Little League Championship from the Montalvo Tournament. Chava was a member of the Piru Parks and Recreation Committee and helped run the Annual Men’s Softball Tournament at Warring Park.
Both Chava and Rosie are actively involved in our community Rosie runs Bingo games with the Piru Senior Group and helps with Piru School functions. Chava stays busy, for over 30 years he’s been maintaining the San Salvador Church, he is an active member of Los Vets Fillmore/Piru Group and joins VFW as a Flag Bearer.

On Tuesday, December 2, at approximately 1:14 p.m., Fillmore Police Department, Fillmore City Fire, and AMR Paramedics were dispatched to a reported traffic collision on Central Avenue and First Street, in front of Fillmore High School. On Saturday, November 22, at 7:20 p.m., Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputies conducted a traffic stop in front of Vons Market. Deputies were seen handcuffing the driver who was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance, a violation of HS 11550(a). Subject was in possession of a controlled substance, stolen credit cards, and stolen mail, a violation of HS 11377(a), PC 666.1, and PC 530.5(e).

This year’s annual Fillmore Community Holiday Giveaway will be held Saturday, December 12th, from 9 AM – 12 PM at the City of Fillmore Fire Station, 711 Landeros Lane. If a child has a disability, they may register to participate on Friday evening, pre-registration is required for Friday evening. The Fillmore Community Holiday Giveaway is the annual event where holiday commodities are given to the children who reside within the Fillmore Unified School District boundaries. Commodities given will be age-appropriate toys, new jackets/coats, reading books and socks. As is customary, a holiday bag of groceries will also be available for each family while supplies last. Santa Claus will be available for a picture with each child. As a reminder, this event is only for children who reside within the Fillmore Unified School District boundaries, you must provide proof of residency within the School District such as a utility bill, report card or driver’s license.
This year’s sponsors of the event include our local Fillmore Police and Fire Departments, Santa Clara Valley Legal Aid, One Step A La Vez, Soroptimist International of Fillmore, Rotary International of Fillmore, Fillmore Lions Club, Ventura County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Fillmore Citizen’s Patrol, Fillmore Friends of the Library, Super A Grocery, Estrella Market, Salvation Army, the Fillmore Fire Foundation and numerous other generous individual and business donors.
