Ventura County, Calif. — The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard has issued an extreme heat warning from Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. through 9:00 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2025.
Temperatures in the valleys and inland mountain areas are expected to exceed the 100-degree mark for a prolonged period of time, with relatively poor overnight recovery.

High temperatures may create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are possible. Residents are encouraged to: drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun, check on relatives and neighbors, take extra precautions if working or spending time outside, and wear lightweight and loose- fitting clothing when possible. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.

Children, the elderly, and those with significant underlying medical conditions are most susceptible to the effects of heat. No person or pet should be left in an enclosed vehicle or direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Temperatures quickly rise to life-threatening levels – even if the windows are partially open.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. It is also important to know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Signs and Symptoms of Heatstroke
• Symptoms: Headache, nausea, red, hot, and dry skin, no perspiration, body temperature of 104°F or higher, chills, and/or rapid pulse.
• First Aid: Cool person immediately! Move to shade or indoors, wrap in a cool, wet sheet, and get medical assistance.
• Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
To help provide respite from the heat, residents who live in heat-prone areas are encouraged to seek refuge in a designated cooling center. For a list of current cooling centers, please call 211 or visit www.vcemergency.com.
Tips for Responding to Extreme Heat Events

Do
• Use air conditioners or spend time in air-conditioned locations such as designated cooling centers.
• Use portable electric fans to exhaust hot air from rooms or draw in cooler air.
• Take a cool bath or shower.
• Minimize direct exposure to the sun.
• Stay hydrated – regularly drink water or other nonalcoholic fluids.
• Eat light, cool, easy-to-digest foods such as fruit or salads.
• Wear loose fitting, light-colored clothes.
• Check on people who may need assistance related to the heat.
• Know the symptoms of excessive heat exposure and the appropriate responses.

Do not
• Leave children and pets alone in cars for any amount of time.
• Drink alcohol to try to stay cool.
• Eat heavy, hot, or hard-to-digest foods.
• Wear heavy, dark clothing.

At last week’s Fillmore Rotary Club meeting Rotarian Sean McCulley presented the program. He is the owner of the Fillmore Town Theatre. Sean has been working to repair old plumbing, water damage, and rework the lobby and marquee. People asked about the color purple and he said it was to attract attention. Not only does he show movies, but has comedians as well as music and plays. He hopes people will come and enjoy the “new” theatre. The problem he is having is not enough visitors to pay for the license to rent each movie, electricity, etc. Come in to enjoy our theatre and relive some of the fond memories from your childhood. Ventura County, CA — Ventura County Public Health (VCPH) officials have identified a case of Tuberculosis (TB) disease at McKevett Elementary Academy of Visual and Performing Arts in Santa Paula. In conjunction with school officials and staff, VCPH is in the process of evaluating all students, staff and faculty who may have been exposed. The Santa Paula Unified School District has notified parents. The most common way to become infected with TB germs is by spending a lot of time with a person who has active TB in enclosed spaces.

VCPH will hold an informational meeting on Monday, August 18, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. to answer questions from parents, students, and school staff, share information about the risk of exposure to TB, and discuss plans for testing. The meeting will be held in the multipurpose room at Isbell Middle School at 221 South 4th Street, Santa Paula, CA 93060.

“We know that news like this can be unsettling, especially when it can involve our children,” said Dr. Uldine Castel, Public Health Officer. “The top priority is the health and safety of the students, staff, and community. Our Public Health team is working hand-in-hand with Santa Paula Unified School District and others in the community. We’ll be here every step of the way to answer questions and provide support. This is a caring, close-knit community, who look out for each other, and we will get through this.”
The TB Control team at VCPH expects to test students and staff who may have had close contact with the individual who was identified with TB disease. The team is carefully examining the possible close contacts to the case. Those identified individuals will receive a letter notifying them that they may have been exposed and that they need to be tested for TB. The testing will begin next week at the school. There will be no cost for the tests.

TB is a serious, treatable, and slow-growing bacterial disease. It usually affects the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of the body. TB is transmitted person-to-person through microscopic droplets that enter the air when a person with active pulmonary TB disease coughs or sneezes. People who breathe in air containing TB bacteria can become infected; however not everyone infected with TB becomes sick.

There is a difference between TB infection and TB disease.
• TB infection: Germs are inactive in the body. The person is not sick and cannot spread TB, but the infection can progress to TB disease in the future.
• TB disease: Germs are active in the body. Symptoms can include frequent coughing, fever, weight loss, night sweats, coughing up blood, and fatigue. People with TB disease can spread the infection to others.

TB can be treated and cured. All individuals who test positive for TB infection will receive follow-up testing and, if needed, medication to ensure they do not develop active TB disease. VCPH has set up a hotline, 805-385- 9444, for concerned parents and staff who believe they may have been exposed to get more information.

For additional information on TB, visit the California Department of Public Health at https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/TBCB.aspx or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at https://www.cdc.gov/tb/index.html.

The District Attorney’s Office encourages Ventura County residents to watch out for these red flags when using online rental advertisements to avoid becoming a victim of a scam:

• Too-Good-to-Be-True Prices: Online rental listings at below-market rent prices, especially for desirable properties, are often bait to lure victims.

• Upfront Payment Demands: Scammers request security deposits, rent, or fees (e.g., background and credit checks) before you have seen the property or signed a lease. Legitimate landlords typically verify tenants’ qualifications before ever requesting payment.

• No In-Person or Virtual Tour: If the “landlord” refuses to show the property in person or via video call, claiming they are unavailable or out of town, this is a red flag.

• Suspicious Contact Methods: Communication solely through email, text, or apps like WhatsApp, with reluctance to speak by phone or in person, can indicate a scam.

• Fake Listings or Stolen Photos: Listings may use photos copied from other sites (e.g., Airbnb, Zillow) or generic stock images. Use reverse image search (like Google Images) to verify photos.
• Pressure to Act Quickly: Scammers often push victims to immediately send money, claiming high demand to prevent victims from researching the property before parting with cash.

• Unusual Payment Methods: Requests for payments via wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or apps like Venmo are red flags. Legitimate landlords typically accept checks or other secure payment methods that are traceable.

• Social media or Non-Standard Platforms: Listings on platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist pose a higher risk for scams due to less oversight and the opportunity for the scammer(s) to hide their identity and pose as a legitimate landlord or owner of the subject property.

Local police departments offer these reminders to ensure you have a safe night of fun that doesn’t involve a DUI if you plan
on drinking or are taking medications that can affect your ability to drive:

· Always use a designated sober driver – a friend who is not drinking, ride-share, cab or public transportation – to get home.

· See someone who is clearly impaired try and drive? Take the keys and help them make other arrangements to find a sober way
home.

· Report drunk drivers – Call 911.

· Hosting a party? Offer non-alcoholic drinks. Monitor those who are drinking and how they are getting home.

Getting home safely is cheap, but getting a DUI is not! Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect the
impact of a DUI arrest to be upwards of $13,500. This includes fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension and other expenses
not to mention possible jail time. Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Thousand Oaks Police Department by a grant
from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
