The District Attorney’s Office encourages Ventura County residents to watch out for these red flags when using online rental advertisements to avoid becoming a victim of a scam:

• Too-Good-to-Be-True Prices: Online rental listings at below-market rent prices, especially for desirable properties, are often bait to lure victims.

• Upfront Payment Demands: Scammers request security deposits, rent, or fees (e.g., background and credit checks) before you have seen the property or signed a lease. Legitimate landlords typically verify tenants’ qualifications before ever requesting payment.

• No In-Person or Virtual Tour: If the “landlord” refuses to show the property in person or via video call, claiming they are unavailable or out of town, this is a red flag.

• Suspicious Contact Methods: Communication solely through email, text, or apps like WhatsApp, with reluctance to speak by phone or in person, can indicate a scam.

• Fake Listings or Stolen Photos: Listings may use photos copied from other sites (e.g., Airbnb, Zillow) or generic stock images. Use reverse image search (like Google Images) to verify photos.
• Pressure to Act Quickly: Scammers often push victims to immediately send money, claiming high demand to prevent victims from researching the property before parting with cash.

• Unusual Payment Methods: Requests for payments via wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or apps like Venmo are red flags. Legitimate landlords typically accept checks or other secure payment methods that are traceable.

• Social media or Non-Standard Platforms: Listings on platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist pose a higher risk for scams due to less oversight and the opportunity for the scammer(s) to hide their identity and pose as a legitimate landlord or owner of the subject property.

The Santa Clara Valley Wellness Foundation has proudly presented the Dr. Samuel Edwards Summer Healthcare Internship Program
(SHIP) to an impressive group of students: Serenity Burboa, Sara Magdaleno, Esteban Estebes, Teresa Valdovinos, Ignacio
Arenas, and Lizbeth Mendez. This enriching five-week paid internship is available to both juniors and seniors. Throughout this
experience, participants will delve into various healthcare career paths through observation and direct engagement with
professionals in the field. Let us all extend our heartfelt congratulations to these exceptional students for their remarkable
achievements and dedication to healthcare!

The Santa Clara Valley Wellness Foundation (SCVWF) awards summer internships to high school students from Santa Paula,
Fillmore, and Piru. We can do this thanks to ongoing community support and contributions.

Local police departments offer these reminders to ensure you have a safe night of fun that doesn’t involve a DUI if you plan
on drinking or are taking medications that can affect your ability to drive:

· Always use a designated sober driver – a friend who is not drinking, ride-share, cab or public transportation – to get home.

· See someone who is clearly impaired try and drive? Take the keys and help them make other arrangements to find a sober way
home.

· Report drunk drivers – Call 911.

· Hosting a party? Offer non-alcoholic drinks. Monitor those who are drinking and how they are getting home.

Getting home safely is cheap, but getting a DUI is not! Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI can expect the
impact of a DUI arrest to be upwards of $13,500. This includes fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension and other expenses
not to mention possible jail time. Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Thousand Oaks Police Department by a grant
from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Ventura County Air Pollution Control District is seeking community members to serve on its Advisory Committee. This
important committee was established to ensure broad representation from private citizens, health and environmental
organizations, government agencies, and industry. Its purpose is to provide an in-depth forum for discussing proposed air
quality rules and other air pollution concerns affecting Ventura County.

Committee members review information from a variety of sources and provide thoughtful recommendations to the Air Pollution
Control Board. Individuals or organizations planning to present technical information to the Board are encouraged to appear
before the Advisory Committee first.

Meeting Information

• Meetings are held in-person, with a virtual option available for remote participation.

• The committee typically meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m., as needed. Additional meetings may be
scheduled by the Board.

This is a great opportunity for Fillmore residents to represent their community and help shape regional air quality
policies.

RANCHO CAMULOS MUSEUM - Saturday, July 26 at 1:00 P.M.

Most will recognize the uniquely shaped bells hanging from their shepherd’s crook staffs that have dotted the highways of California since the dawn of the 20th century. The story of how they branded California, and the remarkable woman responsible not just for their design but their creation, is one that continues to resonate to this day.

California historian Phyllis Hansen will bring “The Bell Lady”, Mrs. A.S.C. Forbes to life on Saturday July 26 at 1: 00 at the Rancho Camulos National Historic Landmark. Phyllis will relate Mrs. Forbes remarkable life and legacy as a true Renaissance Woman who, as an author, historian, designer, businesswoman, foundry-founder, activist and legendary photographer, was almost larger than life. She will also share a number of unique artifacts from the estate of Mrs. Forbes and her equally noteworthy husband. The suggested donation is $10

Museum Docent- led tours will also be available at 3:00
