Flashes Football

First home game was Friday. I had a great time at the football game. I was, however, disappointed at the lack of enthusiasm from the band (at my high school, the band was required to go to all home football games - and play more than 2-3 times a game) and the cheerleaders. I think the cheerleaders did a good job but I thought they could have cheered a little more often.

this is not menat to put anyone down. i just think we could go out there and show a little more support to our team!!

ArtHarvest Festival

Normally I go all the way to Santa Barbara to see art, and I can't afford concerts right now, so I'm very excited about a variety of art and free music coming to Fillmore! Has anyone heard anything about who's playing?

City Policies

At the risk of getting banned from this forum for bringing up a Fireman issue...If the DA can take up to a year to file charges for a misdemeanor, and up to five years for a felony...Since we have the Chief on paid leave at our expense,I think us tax payers have paid for at least a update on the 'allegations' against the Chief. While I'm at it,why is it the volunteer fireman not on leave or fired for a known violation of bringing and using a weapon to work?(not a pocket knife) Is this a case of zero tolerance or justified favoritism?

Question for Mr. Brooks

On your website you state that some of the monies paid into the “Sewer System”, “Bus Stop” and “Storm Drain”, “Pay the Salary Package for our City Managers”.

Are you referring to fees charged to the contractors for permits, plan checks, etc. that would go into the general fund? If so, wouldn’t those same funds also be used for other salaries and operating expenses? Come to think of it, the exorbitant monthly salaries paid to the city council members could also be included in your statement.

Could you explain this further?

The last, best small town

Does anyone know how Fillmore, “The last, best small town” has ended up with first, a tattoo parlor, second, a sexy lingerie shop, and now a “smoke shop” AKA bong shop? Yes “water pipes” (the clever legal term for a device used to smoke marijuana) line the walls. Take a look for yourself. You’ll be shocked. By the way, I’m temped to take a picture of the store’s logo and send it to Starbucks Coffee corporate headquarters hoping they will get sued for trademark infringement.

Does the city have any control over what types of business open within city limits? I’m for growth; but this seems a little too “big city” to me. If this is the new direction for Fillmore, perhaps our city council can help out by playing a few “Adult” movies at the town theater. That’s one way to get the theater back in the black. Heck, we may just get lucky and have a few “working girls” show up in town. What next?

New high school field

who makes these desicions? We are no longer allowed to use the track field at the high school because it requires special shoes! Now we are forced to run along the streets of our town instead of a well lit safe place.
What about PE? Is every parent going to be forced to buy their child these special shoes or will they (the students that the field belongs to) not be able to use it either?

And the football field. No one can use the football field anymore because, again, we need special shoes. the players can no longer drink gatorade because that will ruin the turf. Again, where are the students going to be able to have PE?

we are not the first school to upgrade the track field and the football field. why is it that we make such dumb decisions. why would we purchase materials that are that fragile? plenty of schools allow people to walk/use/drink on their fields.

i am truly dissappointed in the horrible, horrible decisions this city has been making lately. let's hope that the pool doesn't end up this way.

Editor Sells Out!

While reading this weeks Editorial it became abundantly clear that the editorial staff of this paper has sold out. Don't laugh. The proof of this statement has been provided by none other than the Editor(s) themselves! I refer to that portion of this weeks editorial which speaks gushingly of Ukrainian sovereignty and Ukrainian economic prosperity. And what advertisement is directly accross from these very words? Ukrainian Dating, Odessa Darlings.com. No surprise the word pimp comes up in this story. If anyone sees a 72' Cadilac Eldorado with ganster white walls driving around town, you'll know who's driving it. With love from afar.......

Disaster Coordinator ?

Why was CH 10 off the air during the earthquake? Maybe the city manager should rethink his decision of promoting the Disaster Coordinator to run the audio/visual for the city.

Gas Prices

Why is it that all 6 of our gas stations are 10 to 20 cents higher per gal than other stations? Do they think Fillmore has more money that Oxnard or Ventura? Quit ripping off the town that supports you !!!!

Recipes

I have a bag of small white beans. I am soaking them in water to cook, but I am not sure how to season them. Does anyone have any good recipes for dried beans? Most of the ones in my cookbooks call for meat, but I'm more interested in herbs and spices. I also have some small red beans, kidney beans, and lima beans that I might try to fix at another time.
Thank you.

Sports/Organization

This is for Parents who have had kids play in any kind of sport for example soccer, volleyball, cheer, baseball, football, softball.. ect. Along this line comes Fundraiser's. We all know How much FUN those are. Also other Expenses which is incuded to that sport. And along that line would be Communication, Participation ECT.
Which Lead's me to some of my first Gripe's!!

1) Communication- There is no verbal, nor written, nor reminders that is offered. Coaches sometimes trust our kids that they will get the message to us? I don't care how old those kids are from 6yrs.-17yrs. They forget too.

2) Payment's- We are not asked in a timely manner, We are told about things (very short notice like 1-2 days) If something is due "BAM" there it is.

3)Un-Organized- If "Coaches" does this every year Don't you think it would get easier every year? Not Complicated!

4) Parents offer Help- But is sometimes turned down because We might know too much!

I want to know from everyone/anyone who would like to comment about these certain issues. My gripe is about Someone (who is suppose to be in charge of a certain sport team?) Who is not able to follow through Verbal Communication. I have had my kids go through Sports for many, many ,many years.. Along with my nieces, and nephews... I am little puzzled about what is going on NOW. There is no communication, no written agenda, no notes or reminders for Parents.
I would like all comment's and thought's...

Anyone else know if a fire is burning?

In the last hour I've heard quite a few sirens, engines, and helicopters. Does anyone else know if we have a fire?

Rain Garden

Both my wife and I attended the Storm-Water Permit Workshop and during Bert Rapp’s presentation he mentioned the use of Rain Gardens as a way to help prevent pollutant run off from your property. I got curious and just in case anyone else was. A Google search for “California Rain Garden” resulted in some excellent sites suggesting drought tolerant plants well suited for a rain garden in our area. I also found a How-To Booklet for the Homeowner by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the University of Wisconsin Extension.

We were in the initial stages of planning for rain gutters on the house and it looks like I’ll be rethinking where that water should go.

No agenda - just sharing

Senior Walk

I have been walking with Sara Hansen's "Monday 8 a.m. walk" at the Senior Center for the last few weeks and learning about the history of our bike path, how our local fireworks booths got started, and many other topics as well as getting in shape. It takes about 30 minutes or so, the topics are lively, your heart rate gets elevated, and you can even grab a cup of coffee when you're done. Come join us. On Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m. the Senior Center has a great Yoga class for all of us beginning enthusiasts. Gradually stretch out those tired muscles and feel better about life.

Water fees

Has anyone heard any more info on these new water fees? My husband and I plan on attending the meeting tonight but I was just wondering if anyone had any comments.

This is crazy. Our water bill is going to be $150 before we even get to the water usage. =o(

New fence on 2nd Street at track

Could they have put the new fence any closer to the curb? How are we suppose to get the passenger side car door open? And a sidewalk would have been nice. Wanda C.

Eyesore entrance to downtown Fillmore

My gripe? The two properties at the entrance of Central Avenue, Highway 126. Anyone driving through Fillmore would never know what an attractive, interesting little town we have by the Balden lot on the west and the Morris lot on the east. Remember when the Lions Club was allowed to take care of Balden's property? Trees, flowers, grass, the cannon and a great sign introducing downtown Fillmore. I once asked Hank Carrillo what happened and he said they were just told they couldn't maintain it anymore. I asked him if they were allowed to do it again would they--he said yes. As for the lot to the east, removing the dilapidated planter and a coat of paint on the pepto bismol shack would help. Why doesn't the city rent it and turn the little building into a kiosk where citizens and passing motorists could go and get information on city activities and issues. It could be anchored by City Manager Tom Ristau. Just kidding! He has his own office. More gripes--Eli's really needs a facelift and a canopy. Isn't there a downtown canopy conformity plan or something? And can't something be done about their window displays--like good taste? I think Johanna's Ice Cream shop should take Eli's building over and expand her ice cream and candy store nearer my office. She makes the best honeycomb. Also, U Scream Ice Cream in Piru is a fun place to take the grandkids. We took ours there then drove them up above the lake and told them to watch for bears. They loved it. And although this isn't a gripe, speaking of fun and grandkids, we took our six-year old granddaughter and her friend to the Griffith Park Observatory last weekend--it was facinating! The Samuel Oschin Planetarium theater features Centered in the Universe, a history of astronomy and more. It was excellent! Also the Hall of the Sky, with Coelostat and Solar Telescopes (white-light image, spectrohelioscope, spectroscope); plain English, "video" images of the sun, was really, really interesting. And you can buy a $400 comet at the gift shop! Next stop...Mt. Whitney and Palomar. Wanda C.

Fillmore Towne Theatre

I sure wish we could start a theatre fund to buy some more "stuffing" to put in the seats. Our town theater seats have to be the hardest and most uncomfortable in the county. Increasing the comfort of the seats may actually motivate more people to see movies locally. As of now, I'd rather save my rump and go elsewhere. Anyone agree?

Fillmore Police decimeters

What do you think about the new Fillmore Police decimeter to measure loud vehicle and stereo noise? Sounds like a great idea to me.
