Submitted by Head Coach Lolita Wyche-Bowman I am proud to announce that Fillmore High School girl’s tennis played their first match on August 28th against Providence High School in Santa Barbara. The score was Fillmore 7, Providence 11. But, don’t let this score fool you. The girl’s tennis team is just getting better and better as the seasons and years go by. I can tell you that the girls had smiles on their faces when they played against Providence as all of their hard work of running sprints, completing agility drills and learning about the strategies of tennis paid off. They scored points by changing up the pace with a lob, and stayed close to the net for better volleying results. So, we gave Providence High School a run for their money as we were fit and ready to play. Knowing that the girls are having a good time on the court is priceless to me as a coach. Also, I have to mention our number one doubles team played by Maria Gonzales and Amairani Aragon; this doubles team scored three points for Fillmore as they won all three of their matches. Our number two doubles team with second year veteran Jessica Flores and newcomer Melissa Higuera scored two points for the team winning two out of a possible three points for Fillmore. Our matches against Santa Paula High School are as follows: 9-27-2018 @ 3:00 p.m. and 10-16-2018 @ 3:00 p.m. As with the previous years, all of our matches are played “away” from home as we do not have four tennis courts to hold any home matches. Hopefully Fillmore High School will implement tennis courts into their future campus plans so the Fillmore parents can watch their girls on the court. Lastly, Please come to see the girls play as community support is well appreciated. It is only a ten minute drive to Santa Paula. So pencil us in on your calendar, hop in your car and cheer for the team! Go Flashes! |

Submitted by Tony Hernandez California United was in tournament mode as three of its club teams participated over the August 11th weekend. The girls U-12 and U-10 teams saw action locally at the VC Fusion Summer Invitational Tournament held in Ventura while the U-17 boys played at the Anaheim FC Summer Showcase where the competition was tough. The U-17 boys had a strong showing on their first day coming out on top of their bracket, first with a 1-1 tie against Vista Storm with a goal from Rolando Cabrera off the assist from Erick and then a big 3-1 victory over DCSC Atlas. The goal scorers for the second game were Marcos Reyes, Sergio Ramos and Jonathan Laureano along with assists for Julio Suarez, Eric Torres and Yobani Fiqueroa. In the semi-final match the following day, California United looked strong the entire game and came out with a 2-0 win over Pumas Academy with Yobani Figueroa and Jonathan Laureano each scoring one goal and Juan Maciel with an assist. California United would face Arsenal FC in the Championship and wound up coming out on top to take 1st place in the tournament. The U-12 girls also had a great outing at this tournament and definitely made a splash in the Ventura County soccer scene. They were the only team in their division to win both games on Saturday and came out ready to play on Sunday as well. The defense looked strong the entire weekend recording 2 shutouts and making it tough on the opposing teams to get much of anything going. The end result was a 4-0-0 record for the weekend and title of Tournament Champions. The final was a great game against Channel Islands FC that had both teams trading blows, but the defense held and California United came away with the 1-0 victory off the goal of Marlene Gonzalez. Many of the girls played every minute of every game and showed real determination in the final game. The U-10 girls had a challenging weekend in the VC Fusion Summer Invitational Tournament as they stepped up to play against club teams that have been around much longer and showed tremendous heart. The coaches were so proud of how hard these girls played against these top clubs and their gritty determination. Great job to our goalie Delila Ramirez who had over 40 shots at goal throughout the tournament and did an amazing job. This was an amazing learning experience for both the players and the coaches.
