We look forward to seeing everyone back at the Senior Center now that kids & grandkids are back in school & hopefully all vacationers have returned well rested. Although we had hoped to be open the full week, that is Monday through Friday starting September, we have decided to stay closed on Fridays till the first of October. All our classes are still available, Monday through Thursday. Remember you don’t have to be 60 to participate in the activities, we welcome 50 plus as long as it doesn’t prevent any of our older seniors from our classes due to, too many in a class. October is going to be very busy!

Our Next Alzheimer’s & Dementia Caregiver Support Group will meet on September 10th. in the Senior Center Library from 9:00 – 10:30 A.M. We had a really great turn out last time (August 13th.). I do a little care giving myself after I’ve finished here at the center so I can relate, to some degree, the difficulties that you deal with. I can imagine it is even harder when it is a friend or family member, day to day, hour to hour. That’s why I want to encourage and express how important it is for those giving care to be here regularly. The more you come, the more the Alzheimer’s Association will come and be here to help you get the most out of the support group. So, No excuses, see you on the 10th. The coffee is Hot & the Starbucks pastries are free…

Mark your Calendars for Friday, October 5th. Hi-Cap will be here from 9-10:30 discussing what changes will be coming up with Medicare for 2013. and again on Oct. 19 as a “One-Stop” Helping you fill out form.

What Actually is a Senior Center ?
A Senior Center is a place in a community where seniors can gather for support, socialization, fitness and/or other services provided for older people 55 plus. Senior centers are important as many older people live alone and don't see family members regularly. The resources and activities available at senior centers help many older people remain a vital part of their community. There may be a small donation fee required to cover costs for special classes or field trips. The main idea behind a senior center is to provide a welcoming environment for all seniors in the community interested in taking part in the group atmosphere.
The Fillmore’s Senior Center, located at 533 Santa Clara Street in Fillmore, is completely funded by donations to keep it going. Volunteers and staff work together to organize the programs, services and activities at the centers. The seniors themselves also often volunteer at the center. Senior center staff may provide referrals to services for seniors such as meal delivery or home care aide services. For some seniors, the center may be their only source of socialization with people their own age so a senior center can fulfill a very important role in society.

The Fillmore Senior Center would like to thank all our supporters who have so generously donated their loose change to the senior center. The donations can be used to purchase coffee and office supplies for the center. Some of our printer cartridges alone can cost around $70 dollars each. We are also looking for an old fashioned, black & white, No Frills “Copy” Machine. Should someone, or a company have one they are not using any more, but is still in great working condition, we would be happy to pick it up. Two other items we are looking for are, a glass display case with lock, and a book case. Give please us a call 524-4533.

Ventura, CA - Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation is holding two of its most well-known events on the same weekend in September at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa and invites the public to attend one or both of these events. The 15th Annual NICU Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, Sept. 28, with the 40th Annual Benefactors’ Ball is set for Saturday, Sept. 29.

Community Memorial Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, providing care for premature and struggling infants, benefits from the funds raised at the NICU Golf Tournament. The unit holds a Level IIIb designation, a certification reflecting the highest quality of comprehensive care. Funds raised from this year’s tournament will go toward the purchase of a Birthing Simulator.

In addition to golf, the tournament features lunch, prizes, and awards, and is a four-person “Texas Scramble” format. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. Tee time. The field is limited to 144 players. For more information visit www.nicugolf.org, or call the Foundation office 805/667-2881.

The Benefactors’ Ball will begin with a wine-tasting reception at 5:30 p.m. at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa, Ojai, with the cocktail hour beginning at 6 p.m. Dinner is set for 7 p.m., with dancing and music performed by the world renowned sound of Soul City Survivors starting at 8 p.m. The evening is black tie optional.

The Camarillo Police Department will be hosting a Senior Citizen Driver’s Education Class.

The Senior Citizen Driver’s Education Class is a cooperative effort between the Camarillo Health Care District, Camarillo Police Department, Department of Motor Vehicles, and senior drivers.

In an attempt to remain proactive and not reactive, the Senior Citizen Driver’s Education Class is designed to help senior drivers understand how age related issues could affect a person’s ability to drive safely. The Senior Citizen Driver’s Education Class will offer lecture on issues related to senior citizen drivers, advice on how to be a safer driver, information for caregivers, alternate forms of transportation and community resources available to seniors. Our goal is to raise awareness and reduce the number of senior-related injuries and deaths due to traffic collisions.

Senior Drivers and / or their caregivers are encouraged to attend the class. For reservations, call the Pleasant Valley Senior Center at (805) 482-4881. There is no charge to attend the program.
