Seniorcize

The best way to remain healthy and independent as you age is to keep active and exercise. That’s why SCAN Senior Resource Center and Catholic Charities have partnered with the Fillmore Senior Center and Santa Paula Senior Center to offer Seniorcize, an exciting exercise class designed specifically for older adults. Classes are now forming in Fillmore and Santa Paula.

The classes will meet twice a week for 11 weeks and will address a range of issues common to seniors such as improving bone strength; decreasing risk of falls; and increasing muscle strength, endurance and energy.
“Physical activity does not need to be strenuous or time consuming,” said Steve Lehman, manager of the SCAN Senior Resource Center. “The Seniorcize program is a great way to get active and be all that you can be. These classes have a great instructor, Jaci Gutierrez, who will inspire and guide you to new levels of energy and health.” Owner of Athletes in Motion, Gutierrez helped establish and train instructors for the Bone Builders program, which received the "Best New Program" Award from California Parks and Recreation.

In Santa Paula, Seniorcize begins on September 6 and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 11 weeks from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Santa Paula Senior Center, 530 W. Main Street, Santa Paula.

In Fillmore, the program begins on September 9 and will meet on Mondays and Fridays for 11 weeks from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. On Mondays the class will meet at the Fillmore Senior Center, 533 Santa Clara; and on Fridays the class will meet at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1048 West Ventura Street, Fillmore.

The regular cost for the class is $44, which is $2 per session. However, in an effort to help launch this series, SCAN Health Plan’s SCAN Senior Resource Center in Ventura is helping with the cost. The first 25 seniors (age 60 and older) who register will pay only $22. A minimum of 15 participants are needed for class formation.
Space is limited. For questions or to register for the Santa Paula class, please call 933-4272 or 933-4226. For the Fillmore program, please call 524-4533.
