SACRAMENTO – Sen. George Runner (R-Antelope Valley) introduced Senate Joint Resolution 9 today to urge the President and Members of Congress to ensure that no terrorist or suspected terrorist detained at Guantanamo Bay is permitted to enter California.

“We need to be vigilant to ensure that the release of terrorists will not threaten the safety of the citizens of California.” Runner said.

The closure of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, means that terrorists detained at that facility will either be transferred to the United States or abroad. No country has volunteered to take these prisoners. The Obama Administration has not articulated a plan for the relocation of these terrorists but confirms that they will be moved.

“The Legislature should be unified in its opposition to the release of these prisoners in our state. California has a big enough job protecting citizens with currents threats to safety. Bringing in a new threat is unacceptable.” Runner continued.

SJR 11 has been referred to Senate Rules Committee and will likely be heard soon on the Senate Floor.
