 Ventura County Sheriff's Department On April 19, 2013, at approximately 2:40 P.M., a male victim was parked and waiting to pick up his younger brother from Thousand Oaks High School. The victim saw his brother walking east on Avenida De Las Flores and crossing Moorpark Road. A male juvenile, 14 years old, approached the victim’s younger brother and challenged him to a fight. The victim’s brother refused to fight. S-Felipe, brother of the male juvenile, arrived and joined the conversation. The victim exited his vehicle and went to his brother’s aide. S-Felipe threw a punch at the victim; the victim then punched S-Felipe in the face. The male juvenile then pulled a switchblade type knife from his pants pocket, and chased the victim with the knife in his hand. The victim and his brother were able to make their way back to their vehicle and leave the area. The victim did not sustain any injuries. On April 30, 2013, at approximately 3:00 P.M., a male juvenile victim and a female friend walked from Thousand Oaks High School to Acorn Acres Park. While sitting on a park bench, the victim was approached by four subjects; two male juveniles, S-Felipe and S-Alvarez. S-Alvarez and S-Felipe claimed their gang and told the victim to fight one of the juveniles one on one. The victim refused to fight. One of the male juveniles approached the victim, claimed his gang, and then punched the victim in the face. S-Felipe and another male juvenile joined in and began punching the victim in the head and upper torso. After several minutes S-Alvarez ordered the beating to be stopped. The suspects stopped the beating, however, one of the male juvenile delivered one last kick to the victim’s rib cage. The victim and his female friend walked back to Thousand Oaks High School to seek help. The victim did not seek medical attention. On May 29, 2013, in the early morning hours, 20 law enforcement personnel from the City of Thousand Oaks Special Enforcement Unit, Detectives Bureau, and the Bike Patrol Unit executed search warrants at four residences in the City of Thousand Oaks. As a result of the investigation, 4 suspects were arrested for the attack at Acorn Acres Park and 1 male juvenile was arrested for the Assault with a Deadly Weapon in the street. The above suspects were arrested for a variety of charges that include; Gang conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon, participation in a criminal street gang, willful harm or injury to a child, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor The adult males were booked into the East County Jail, and the juveniles were lodged into the Juvenile Justice Facility. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On Tuesday morning (5-28-13), sometime between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m., an unknown person set fire to the residence at 69 Wales Street in the city of Thousand Oaks. No one was injured as a result of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the fire are being investigated by Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and Sheriff’s Arson Unit. Detectives are seeking the public’s help with any information about any suspicious activity or suspicious vehicles seen in or around the area before the fire. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On May 22, 2013 Camarillo detectives and detectives from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Special Crimes Unit, coordinated with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) to apprehend Gurgen Martirosyan and Vigen Manukyan for a series of residential burglaries that occurred in Ventura, Los Angeles and Orange counties. On May 1, 2013 a burglary occurred at a residence in the 5000 block of Paseo Monteleno, in the Mission Oaks area of Camarillo. On May 9, 2013 a burglary occurred at a residence in the 5300 block of Fieldcrest Dr., also in the Mission Oaks area of Camarillo. Detectives from the Camarillo station began their investigation of the burglaries and discovered that during both crimes, the victims received a large number of missed calls from the same telephone number. The point of entry and the items taken were also very similar in nature. Detectives learned that similar methods of operation were also used in burglaries in Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills. During the ensuing investigation, detectives were able to identify Martirosyan and Manukyan as likely suspects in these serial crimes. After contacting numerous agencies in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, Camarillo detectives discovered the same method of operation had been used in burglaries in all three counties. On May 22, 2013 at approximately 1200 PM Camarillo detectives’ notified detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department of a potential residential burglary in progress in the 5800 block of Allott Ave., in the city of Van Nuys. Detectives with LASD, acting on information from the Camarillo detectives, located and arrested Martirosyan and Manukyan for an in progress Home Invasion Robbery in the 5800 block of Allott Ave., in the city of Van Nuys. Martirosyan was shot by a LASD deputy in his lower extremities during the apprehension and taken to a local hospital. After the suspects were in custody, detectives from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Gang Unit and the Camarillo Special Enforcement Detail served simultaneous search warrants at Martirosyan’s residence in Arleta and at Manukyan’s residence in Glendale. Detectives located burglary tools, pepper spray, simulated weapons, and stolen property at both locations. Martirosyan is currently on parole for being a felon in possession of a gun and was out on bail from another residential burglary that occurred in Pasadena in June of 2012. Martirosyan and Manukyan are both being held without bail in Los Angeles County for home invasion robbery. Camarillo detectives obtained warrants for both subjects arrest for conspiracy, burglary and theft of a firearm for the crimes committed in Camarillo. Warrants for the crimes committed in the other jurisdictions are also expected. The arrest of these serial burglars could not have been accomplished without the collective collaboration of all of the agencies and units combined. SACRAMENTO, CA - Attorney General Kamala D. Harris today announced the sentencing of three defendants in a human trafficking ring in which women from Mexico were used as prostitutes in five Northern California cities. Nery Najarro-Rodriguez, 42, Jorge Perez-Hernandez, 37, and Luis Mata, 30, pled no contest to conspiracy to commit pimping and pandering as part of a multi-county investigation. The defendants were each sentenced in Sacramento County Superior Court to three years in county jail. The charges stemmed from an extensive FBI investigation into a human trafficking network that spanned several northern California counties. Young women, ages 21 to 30, were trafficked from Mexico and sold for sex to as many as 20 clients in a single day. The sex acts occurred in brothels identified in Chico, Stockton, Yuba City, Fairfield and Sacramento. “Human trafficking is a horrific crime that brutalizes millions of victims,” said Attorney General Harris. “It is important that we investigate, prosecute and imprison those who force this kind of cruelty and depravity upon women. These sentences send a message that human traffickers will be prosecuted and punished.” In January, the FBI served arrest and search warrants at the brothel houses and recovered evidence which was presented to the Attorney General’s Special Crimes Unit. FBI surveillance showed that the women spent approximately one week at a particular brothel before being driven to a bus station or another brothel location. Federal prosecutors have charged three additional defendants with harboring an alien and conspiracy to harbor an alien. That case is still pending. California Department of Justice Special Agents obtained arrest warrants for five suspects on state conspiracy and pimping charges. Three of those five suspects were sentenced today. A fourth suspect, Adelaida Teran-Bravo, 42, was previously convicted of felony accessory and sentenced to six months in county jail. Charges against the fifth defendant, Garrido Fuentas, 32, are currently pending in Butte County Superior Court. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On 05-24-13, Investigators with the Thousand Oaks Fraud & Forgery Unit concluded an identity theft investigation by arresting Kyle Zimmerman at the Ana Mesa Inn #207 in the city of Costa Mesa. The investigation started after a city of Thousand Oaks resident reported to the police that somebody attempted to open several credit card accounts using their personal identifying information. The suspect also accessed the victim’s checking account and transferred out money. Through the investigation, a person believed to be responsible for the crime was identified and a search warrant was served on his residence. Evidence related to this incident and possibly other identity theft related crimes was located inside the suspect’s residence. Follow-up work by investigators will be completed to determine if there are other victims, which warrant additional charges against the suspect. Kyle Zimmerman was arrested for Identity Theft and booked into the East County Jail. His bail is currently set at $50,000 dollars pending his arraignment in Superior Court. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On Sunday evening at approximately 9:20 p.m., Carlos Perez was driving a 1982 Datsun 280ZX north on A Street when he failed to stop or slow for the stop signed intersection at First Street and he collided with the rear end of Martha Sandoval’s 2005 Honda Accord. Prior to the collision, Martha Sandoval was going north on A Street and she was accelerating away from the stop sign at First Street to continue north. Perez’ Datsun sustained major front end damage from the collision and was no longer operable. He fled the crash scene on foot running south on A Street. Martha Sandoval’s Honda sustained moderate rear end damage, but was still drivable. She pursued Perez in her car while calling 9-1-1 for assistance. Responding deputies from the Fillmore Station captured Perez on Sespe Avenue east of A Street. The investigation established that Perez had been driving while under the influence of alcohol. A passenger in Martha Sandoval’s Honda was injured as a result of the collision. Joanna Sandoval, 7 mos. pregnant, was admitted at the Ventura County Medical Center for observation. Perez was arrested and he completed a blood test. He was then booked at the Sheriff’s Pre Trial Detention Facility for Driving under the Influence of Alcohol Causing Injury and Hit and Run with Injury. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On Sunday night at approximately 6:34 p.m., a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Carlos Pineda was westbound on Old Telegraph Road when it made an unsafe turning movement leaving the roadway and colliding with a raised curb, a drainage culvert, and a tree. Pineda refused medical treatment at the scene. The passenger in Pineda’s vehicle, Olga Rodriguez, was transported to the Santa Paula Emergency Room for injuries sustained during to the collision. Deputies from the Fillmore Police Department responded to the collision. Their investigation resulted in Pineda being arrest for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Causing Injury. Pineda consented to a blood test and was later booked into the Ventura County Jail. LOS ANGELES -- Attorney General Kamala D. Harris today filed an enforcement action against JPMorgan Chase & Co. (Chase) alleging that the bank engaged in fraudulent and unlawful debt-collection practices against tens of thousands of Californians. The suit alleges that Chase engaged in widespread, illegal robo-signing, among other unlawful practices, to commit debt-collection abuses against approximately 100,000 California credit card borrowers over at least a three-year period. “Chase abused the judicial process and engaged in serious misconduct against California credit card borrowers,” Attorney General Harris said. “This enforcement action seeks to hold Chase accountable for systematically using illegal tactics to flood California’s courts with specious lawsuits against consumers. Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Sheriff’s Office is investigating several cases involving Southern California Edison customers who have been the targets of a telephone bill payment scam. The suspects have been calling SCE customers telling them they must make immediate payment on past due bills or have their electric service disconnected. The callers are also demanding that payment be made through a prepaid cash card, such as a PayPal or Green Dot card. SCE officials have confirmed there have been similar reports from customers throughout Southern California, and they are working closely with law enforcement agencies to identify the suspects. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On 05-07-13, detectives with the East County Major Crimes Unit arrested Thomas Pecel for making criminal threats against California Lutheran University. The incident was originally reported to the Thousand Oaks Police Department, on 05-01-13, after a university employee received a threatening e-mail that was sent to the school by Thomas Pecel. Pecel indicated in the e-mail that he wanted to commit a campus shooting. Evidence was obtained through the investigation that corroborated Pecel did in fact send the e-mail. Pecel was arrested in Ventura and booked into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility. His bail is currently set at $25,000 dollars pending his arraignment in Superior Court. Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Moorpark Police Department Special Enforcement Unit continued a three-month investigation into a vandalism crime spree in the City of Moorpark, with the service of a probation search and arrest of a juvenile. This is the fourth arrest in the past four weeks involving graffiti. Over the past three months, a suspect, using a moniker, spray painted several walls throughout the city causing thousands of dollars of damage. Investigators developed information, which led to a male juvenile as a suspect in the case. On March 30, 2013, Investigators from the Moorpark Special Enforcement Detail and Patrol Deputies from the Moorpark Police Department conducted a probation search at the juvenile’s residence in the 400 block of Millard Street, in Moorpark. Investigatory discovered items of evidentiary value linking the juvenile to the multiple vandalisms. While at the residence, several subjects were contacted. During the investigation, it was determined that several subjects (listed adult subjects above) were found to be under the influence of a controlled substance. In addition, Angel Cota was found to be in possession of a controlled substance. The juvenile was arrested for two felony counts of vandalism, one misdemeanor count of possession of vandalism tools, and violation of probation. The juvenile was released to an adult guardian. All of the adult subjects were booked into the Ventura County Sheriff’s Pre-Trial Detention Facility, Ventura. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On May 1, 2013, at approximately 1200 hours, deputies responded to a check the well-being call for service. When deputies and fire personnel arrived on scene, there were two adults confirmed to be deceased at the residence. After a thorough investigation was conducted by Major Crimes/ East County Investigations and the Medical Examiner, the deaths of the two adults were consistent with a mutual double suicide pending the Medical Examiners completed investigation. Based on the evidence at the scene, there were no signs of criminal activity. The investigation will continue pending the autopsy and toxicology reports by the Medical Examiner. Ventura County Sheriff's Department Recently, the city of Thousand Oaks has experienced an increase in residential and vehicle burglaries. During this investigation, the Thousand Oaks Police Department engaged in a public awareness campaign, asking residents to call and report suspicious activity. With the help of tips from our community members, several burglary suspects have been arrested over the past month. These suspects are uknown to one another, and their crimes are not related. On April 10th, 2013, Detectives and School Resource Officers from the Thousand Oaks Police Station arrested two juveniles for a rash of burglaries to storage lockers in the Thousand Oaks area. On April 15th, 2013, a tip from the public led patrol officers to Madison McConnell. McConnell was found in possession of stolen property and has been connected to at least one residential burglary in the city of Thousand Oaks. Detectives are continuing to investigate the possibility he has been involved in more. On April 26th, 2013, investigators from the Thousand Oaks Special Enforcement Unit arrested Sean Torbert for residential burglaries that occurred in the city of Los Angeles. Torbert is suspected of committing similar residential burglaries in Thousand Oaks, and investigators are investigating his connection to those crimes. The identification and arrest of these suspects is the direct result of the partnership the Thousand Oaks Police Department has with our community, and the willingness of our community members to provide essential information regarding crime in our neighborhoods. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On March 29th, 2013, patrol deputies, Sheriff’s Major Crimes detectives, and the Sheriff’s Gang Unit responded to a robbery that just occurred at Lupita’s Wireless located in the unincorporated community of Saticoy. The suspects in the robbery brandished a handgun at the store employee and stole several expensive cell phones. Witnesses described a white female and two Hispanic males as the suspects in the robbery. The Sheriff’s Gang Unit conducted an investigation into the robbery and identified Krista Munoz, Ruben Desoto and Eric Mahoney as the suspects in the robbery. Through the investigation, Detectives learned that the subjects had also committed several commercial burglaries in which power tools and other items were stolen. On 04-24-13, Sheriff’s Gang Unit detectives conducted surveillance on a residence in the 3600 block of A Court in Oxnard. Munoz and Desoto were taken into custody after they were seen leaving the residence. Detectives returned to the residence with a search warrant. Evidence from the robbery was recovered. Munoz and Desoto were booked at the Main Jail for 211 PC – Robbery and 182(a)(1) PC – Conspiracy to commit a crime. Mahoney was already in custody in Santa Barbara County on charges unrelated to the robbery and a warrant was submitted for his arrest. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On 4/25/13, at about 11:25 pm, City of Camarillo Patrol Deputies responded to a call of a stabbing victim in the area of Ponderosa Drive and Arneill Road. The victim, Garlan Weems, reported that the suspect, Matthew Worden, exited a vehicle at the location and began arguing with him. Weems stated Worden pulled out a knife and stabbed him multiple times. Weems was transported to a local hospital and underwent surgery related to his injuries. Worden was eventually located and arrested for 664/187 (attempted murder). Worden was transported and booked into the main jail in Ventura. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On April 26, 2013 at about 7:57 PM, Thousand Oaks patrol deputies responded to a robbery just occurred at Auctions In Motion, located at 889 Mitchell Road. Four unknown Hispanic male suspects were involved in the robbery. During the robbery two suspects displayed weapons prior to taking property from the victims. The victims were employees that were parked outside to the front of the business. Two suspects approached the victims, who had just exited their vehicle, and demanded money. The first two suspects each displayed a weapon; a handgun, and possibly a baton or canister of pepper spray. The first two suspects were then followed by a third suspect who assisted the first two in taking the victim’s property from their vehicle. The property taken was US currency and personal property of the victims. The suspects had a getaway driver (fourth suspect) waiting. They fled in what appeared to be an older model black BMW. No one was injured during the robbery. The Thousand Oaks Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in solving this case. Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Camarillo Police Department is partnering with the DEA in a National Drug Take-Back Program called “Got Drugs.” On Saturday, April 27th, between the hours of 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, citizens are encouraged to bring all unused / expired prescription medications to the Camarillo Police Department’s “Community Room” for disposal. The Camarillo Police Department has partnered up before with the DEA to make our communities safer by hosting a “Drop Off” site for unused prescription medication. The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America. The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family, friends and the home medicine cabinet. For more information on DEA collection sites in your neighborhood, you can visit www.dea.gov or call 800-882-9539. The Camarillo Police Department would also like to remind citizens that we have a pharmaceutical “drop off” bin available in our lobby and that we collected over 1767 pounds of unused medication in 2012. In 2009, we collected 646.55 pounds of unused medication, in 2010, 1155.75 pounds of unused medication, and in 2011, we collected 1516 pounds of unused medication. Our lobby hours are Monday thru Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
