On February 11, 2010, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a deputy sheriff conducting regularly scheduled safety checks discovered Mr. Meyers sitting on his bunk in apparent respiratory distress. The deputy immediately summoned nursing staff that were on duty in the area.

When they arrived, Stevens was unresponsive. Immediate life-saving measures were undertaken in an attempt to revive Mr. Meyers. These measures included CPR, oxygen and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Paramedics were also summoned to the jail.

Once the paramedics arrived they conducted their own assessment and treatment of Mr. Meyers. Meyers was unable to be revived and was pronounced dead at 2:12 a.m. by paramedics.

Per protocol, detectives from the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau responded to assist with the investigation. Later in the morning, an autoprsy conducted by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed Mr. Meyers died of natural causes.
