Norma Jean Lyon (Roden/Zuelow), 85, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025, with her children by her side. Born April 2,
1940, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, she built a full and faithful life rooted in kindness, service, and quiet strength. After
graduating from Henley High School and earning her bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University, Norma Jean dedicated
much of her life to education—teaching first at Oxnard and Hueneme High Schools and Santa Barbara City College, and later
at Fillmore High School, Oxnard College, and Sawyer College in Ventura. She raised her family in Piru and Fillmore,
California, and embraced her retirement in La Cañada and Palm Desert, where she continued to explore life and give
generously of her time and heart.
Known for her radiant smile and graceful presence, Norma Jean was a selfless, make-do kind of woman who found deep purpose
in acts of service—baking for others, volunteering at local libraries and for Meals on Wheels, hosting exchange students
and missionaries, and hand making pillows for active military. Her faith was central to her life, expressed through Sunday
School teaching, Bible study leadership, and daily walks of gratitude. Whether decorating Rose Parade floats, tending her
garden, cheering for the Dodgers, or planning her next overseas adventure, Norma Jean brought curiosity, joy and a sense of
purpose to everything.
She is survived by her sister Janet, her children; Kristie, Leslie, and Greg; her grandchildren Lexi and Nate; and one
great-grandchild—with another soon to arrive. Her legacy of love, strength, and devotion lives on in all who knew her. She
will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to:
