Joseph Phillip Donald Kern
January 1933 – December 2018
On Tuesday, December 11, 2018, Joseph Phillip Donald Kern passed away at his home in Fillmore at age 85, from a prolonged illness.
He was born January 12, 1933 in Los Angeles, CA. His mother: Hannah Geraldine Kern, and father: Boyd Kern; brothers: Robert and David (both deceased).
He married Catherine Lynda Kern, June 26, 1954; he is survived by seven children, 31 Grandchildren and 17 Great-Grandchildren.
Daughter: Hannah Tulberg, husband Clark - grandchildren: Sam, Dorothy, Henry, Joseph, Max and Thomas.
Son: Peter Kern, wife Erica - grandchildren: Sarah, Nick, Martina, Emily and Valerie.
Son: Paul Kern, wife Mary - grandchildren: Molly, Phoebe, Jack.
Daughter: Mary Orellana, husband Robert - grandchildren: Raffael, Gabriel, Helen, Mihkael, Isabella, Regina, Franie, Sofia.
Daughter: Elizabeth Kulwiec, husband Robert - grandchildren: Thais, Ana and Boris.
Son: Charles, Wife Sandrene - grandchildren: Julia, Chloe, Pauline and Louise.
Son: Dominic, wife Tamara - grandchildren: Simon and Shawn.
Joe was raised in Alhambra, CA, and went to Loyola High School in Los Angeles. He graduated from the University of Santa Clara, and University of Santa Clara Law School. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society. He served in the US Army in Austria and Germany, and moved to Fillmore in November 1964, where he opened his law practice. He was a lawyer in Fillmore for over 60 years, serving 19 of those as Fillmore City Attorney.
Joe was a long-time member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, was an active Rotarian for over 50 years and honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He served through many organizations: Serra Club, St. Francis Parish, Fillmore Chamber of Commerce, Santa Clara River Valley Railroad Society, and Ventura County Transportation Committee; also Docent at the Murphy Car Museum, and many more car clubs.
It was the privilege of his life, he said, to have been involved in supporting Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula.
There will be a 5:00pm Rosary on Tuesday, 12-18-18 at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Fillmore. The Funeral will be held at 10:00am on Wed., 12/19/18 at Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel at Thomas Aquinas College followed by burial at Bardsdale Cemetery.
