Jose Mercado (April 1964 – May 2025)

In Loving Memory of Jose Mercado “Conejo, Cus Cus, Joe Joe” Jose Mercado passed away peacefully on the night of May 16, 2025, surrounded by the love and presence of his family. Known affectionately by many names—Conejo, Cus Cus, and Joe Joe. Jose was a vibrant, kind, funny, and adventurous soul whose warmth and spirit left a lasting impression on everyone lucky enough to know him. As the oldest son in a family of nine siblings, Jose naturally stepped into a leadership role from a young age. Always curious and driven, he was an entrepreneur by age nine, selling homemade cheese door to door, cheese he proudly transported on his bicycle from the ranch into Fillmore. He also delivered the Ventura Star-Free Press on that same bike, a clear sign of the strong work ethic that would define his life. From helping in school to working for his uncle at Cornejo’s Fruit Stand, Jose always found pride in earning his way and being independent. He graduated from Fillmore High School in 1981, where he played soccer for the Fillmore Flashes and was honored as the team’s Best Defensive Player. That same year, the Flashes won the CIF championship, and it remained one of his proudest memories. Jose’s love for cars went beyond a hobby, it became his lifelong career. He was the first in the family to attend college, graduating from Arizona’s Mechanic Institute. Whether tuning an engine or restoring a classic ride, Jose poured his heart into every vehicle he touched. His beloved truck, “El Jefe,” stood as a symbol of his dedication, craftsmanship, and passion. Outside of the garage, Jose found freedom on the open road as a proud Harley-Davidson rider, taking adventurous trips to places like Mazatlán. He also had a deep love for music, food, and family, always the one to bring laughter to gatherings with his playful jokes and warm spirit. Children especially adored him; he had a magical way of making them feel special, always making time to play, tease, and laugh with them. Jose’s greatest legacy lives on in his beloved son, Jessee Francisco Mercado, 31, a kind and genuine young man who proudly served in the U.S. Army. Jose was endlessly proud of him. He is deeply missed by his Mama, Juanita, and his siblings Maria, Lupe, Frances, Margie, and Raul. He was preceded in death by his Father, Jesus, and his siblings Miguel, Paul and Jesus. Jose’s story is one of love, hard work, laughter, and resilience. His memory will continue to live in the hearts of those he touched with his humor, his hugs, and his heart.
