Garland Rose Young Ferrell was born on November 20, 1922, to Clarence R. Young and Elsie Haase Young, raised in Bardsdale, California and served as Vice President of Ventura College.
Her first marriage to Robert Brude ended tragically when he was killed while training as a pilot during WWII. She then met and married Gordon Stuart Ferrell, a US Marine stationed at Camp Pendelton after participating in the battle for Iwo Jima.
They moved to Ventura County, where Rosalynn Ann was born in 1948 and Susanna Marie in 1950, and then to Bakersfield, where Gordon worked for an engineering firm.
George Archer Brown Ferrell was born in 1957, and Garland continued to be a devoted mother to the three children. When Gordon passed in 1971 Garland assumed both parental roles for George, which she embraced with her usual love and enthusiasm.
In 2000, to be near George and his family, Garland moved to Salinas, where she would remain until 2023. She passed in a care facility in Irvine on April 26, 2024.
In a ceremony at Bardsdale Cemetery at 10 am on September 19, 2025, her urn will be interred beside her brother Raymond W. Young and her parents.
