Home team takes 1st Place Brisket at the California Honey Harvest Festival BBQ Competition
Part 1 of 4
The California Honey Harvest Festival, held Saturday, June 13th in Central Park, Fillmore, drew one of the largest event crowds of the year. The 3rd Annual California The Honey Festival, put on by Bennett’s Honey Farm and Fillmore & Western Railway, was a fun filled learning experience, with Fillmore & Western transporting passengers to Bennett’s Honey Farm, between Fillmore and Piru. Bennett’s offered a tour of their honey harvesting and bottling process, as well as demonstrations by bee keepers, above right. Crafts, food and commercial vendors were at the event in Central Park for the enjoyment of the crowd. Also, the competition is sanctioned by the Kansas City BBZ Society (KCBS) which sanctions events worldwide. It was also sanctioned by the California BBQ Association and counts towards Team of the Year points with Fillmore’s hometown team taking 1st Place Brisket. The team, Rigo Landeros, Steve Conaway, and Matt Petersen are pictured front. Al (Bennett Farms)and Roger Campbell (event promoter) are in yellow shirts. The team took 1st place in Brisket with a perfect score of “180”. The KCBS Rep said it’s very rare for a team that has only competed in 5 competitions to earn a “180”.
