OfflineFillmore Flashes Wrestling is underway. They had their first JV tournament a week ago in Ventura. I think it was a 8-way tournament. 3 of our wrestlers walked away with 1st place in their indivdual weight classes. (Robert, Mark, Christian (tied for first) and Josh brought home the medals).
On Wednesday 12.17.09 the JV squad traveled to Paso Robles. The Flashes were caught off guard by their opponent, who has been really building a great program over the last few years. The results weren't what anyone was looking for, but the Flashes JV squad has some new wrestlers who are learning the sport and even getting beat can teach you something.
Today, 12.19.09, the Flashes JV squad traveled to Rio Mesa for another full day of wrestling. I believe 4 wrestlers took home 1st place in their weight class and best of all the Fillmore Flashes JV Squad took 1st place at the entire meet! I know Robert, Taylor, Josh and Christian all went 5 - 0 and took home the first place medals. While sitting in the stands some of the wrestlers from Thousand Oaks were talking (they didn't know I was supporting Fillmore at the time) and they were supporting our wrestlers with comments like "Fillmore brings it" and "Fillmore wants it today". They also said that out of all the school present they thought Fillmore had the best sportsmanship, win or lose. The season is young and the Flashes have a few wrestlers who are mending dislocated elbows or sore shoulders. Hopefully they'll all heal prior to league matches later in the season.
This Tuesday they travel to Camarillo for the Gold Coast Classic, which is one of the larger local tournaments. If you want to come watch bring a soft cushion, you'll need it.
Steve, seems that the echoes of the audience in the stands reached many ears and eyes! Quite a sportsmanlike bevy of comments. Thanks for passing it along. Looks to me like Fillmore Wrestling has some great up-and-comers, as well as some very good situated wrestlers. GO FLASHES!
I could only sit and whistle. If I ever got onto the mats with any of these guys, I would be squashed like a super-cheeseburger under the front wheel of a Peterbilt.
Recap of wrestling. The team traveled to Chaminade, who was hosting a 10 way match, and a handful of Fillmore wrestlers came away with medals.
Fillmore hosted Nordoff week before last and soundly beat that school as a team. No medals as it was a league match.
Fillmore hosted Malibu last Wednesday. Malibu is building a program and has not filled out all the weight classes, as a result Fillmore won that match. To help Malibu gain experience their wreslers got to go twice, though not back to back, against a different Fillmore wrestler.
Today the Frosh/Soph Flashes, which is the entire team less 3 wrestlers are going to a Frosh Soph tournament. The three Juniors are going with the team to help coach, support and encourage their teammates on. I suspect our Frosh/Soph wrestlers will come home with some medals.
Wednesday 1/27/10 Fillmore hosts Santa Paula. Word is that match will be for the League Championship! It's always a very intense match with both squads bringing their best efforts to the mat. Unconfirmed location is the Fillmore Middle School due to conflicts with Girls Basketball.
