Deli in Moorpark--Try It!

There's a restaurant at the corner of Hwy 23 and West Los Angeles Ave., Moorpark, called Grinders. I've driven by it a hundred times but not being a "grinder" sandwich fan, I never gave it a try. And I have to say, though well-kept, the exterior presents itself on the bland side, giving no indication to what awaits inside. But over the weekend my sis-in-law asked me if I had ever tried it. She said it had great food, pretty good sweet & sour cabbage soup (though not as good as her Grandma Sarah’s recipe), and the best rye bread she's ever had. That peaked my culinary curiosity. There are two people I listen to about food; my sis-in-law and my daughter-in-law. Both are accomplished "chefs". I hate to cook. Then I asked my son, who works in Moorpark, if he had ever eaten there. He got a horrible look on his face and said "Yes, for breakfast but it's just like a (insert lousy restaurant name)," and wished me luck if I decided to try it, which I did. First let me say he had not eaten there in over 3 years. It has since been purchased by a very nice gentleman, Francisco. The first shock comes as you walk in the front door. I was expecting a Denny's-like decor but it had a more upscale feel, with a really nice bakery counter waiting to suck dollars out of you purse/pocket and attach to your hips. There is a 22-page menu. Twenty-two pages. Go ready to read. The menu was reminiscent of Roxie's Deli in TO, which I told the waitress, Nicole. That's when she told my husband and me Francisco worked at Roxie's for 15 years, 10 as manager, which explained a lot. Francisco came over and we talked for a while. I told him he should change the name to Manny's Deli, "Grinders" does not do the place justice. I had the Skyhigh Pastrami (a Rueben with coleslaw instead of sauerkraut) and the rye bread was very good. But it was missing a pickle which I didn't think of until later so I guess I didn't miss it that much. The menu had wine, deli, Mexican, Italian, Steak, desserts, pretty much you-name-it. I love a good deli sandwich (and omelet) and will be returning to Grinder's (until he changes the name). Wanda

I'll give it a go next time I'm over the hill. One of the latest trends in Los Angeles is a roving Korean BBQ Taco Truck. I'm not kidding! They twitter time and location and fans flock to the rolling diner. The thing has received rave reviews from Foodies and customers alike. The menu changes often and they twitter that out also. They're developing a secret menu, aka IN & OUT, just to keep the buzz building. My co-workers are young and hip and experienced the fair. Two oppossing thumbs up from them.
This is a great example of how businesses are "thinking outside the bun" and marketing with technology. Times are tough but it's possible to make it if you have a good product and a good price point. Korean BBQ Tacos. Who would have thunk it?

Grinders has been a heck of a good restaurant for many years now...enjoy also the Cactus Patch...maybe as much for it's old Moorpark ambience as anything else...and hey, Paula still works there!!!!

Posted by

We stopped by Grinders today. Half sandwich (Corned Beef on Rye) and Cup of Soup (Corn Chowder) was really good. Corned Beed was lean and tasty.
My, so to be 16 year old, couldn't finish the Ultimate Burger and Onion Rings. Mrs. C had the Ham sandwich and salad. The pickles were great! All and all very good indeed! Menu was very diverse and prices were agreeable.
It's worth a stop and I'm sure I'll be back.

Steve, do they have "take-out"? What on earth; no "feet" today, either? Maybe you can get me a "take-out" and bring it by my house, sometime. I'll pay for the order and your gas money.

Posted by

I didn't see any chicken feet on the menu. Chicken soup, chopped poultry salad, roasted chicken, you get the idea. They take phone orders and pack to go.
5th house on the left from the north south corner of Walk St and Don't Walk Ave, right???

Those Trumpet riders...always soooo confused...

Steve, we went to Grinders on Father's Day. Our 15 month old grandbaby highly recommends the mac'n'cheese. Wanda

We may be confused but at least our bikes are dependable. And to tie this meaningless post into my previous post, I saw someone in Moorpark has outstanding taste in motorcycles as a new blacked out Triumph Speed Triple was parked outside.

Mac 'n cheese... yum.

Posted by

Steve, I have 4 personal vehicles. Two motorcycles, and two other vehicles; one domestic and one German.

My house? Oh, it is west of your house. I will let you know the address sometime. We can have a great time if you deliver my order. You, Pancone and Tom, and even Martin can join me.

That Triumph belongs to someone in television, I think. He also is into all types of classic and vintage automobiles. I have a run-up on those Triumph motos and their owners. I wished to heck I could get my hands on that Triumph you saw. Since I owned my first moto in 1977, I have since then, been "into" motorcycles. I love vintage automobiles of any era, too. I just do not have the money to get into this hobby, of sorts; as having these vehicles are investments. Just the insurance on these vehicles are more than the money I make.

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride!

Cre8- have you been to Nethercutt in Sylmar? I think that is the spelling. They have the vintage cars, they are just gorgeous! But my favorite was the 50's trailer they had, boy that brought back memories! But hubby loved the old touring cars, my gosh they had a lot of room in them! So beautiful, all of them--

Ooooofffff, Steve...!!!

Posted by

Steve! "Mac and cheese"? Oh, Macaroni and cheese! Mr. Pancone, how come Steve got the "Ooooffff Pancone Award" again?

Fillmore native, yes, I had been to the Nethercutt (I think it is the spelling, too, but I'm not positive of that). Those touring cars of the 1930's were absolutely wonderful vehicles, with their 12-cylinder engines, fuel injection; and man, they were big automobiles; I agree! It would put a Cadillac to shame.

But, I love vintage automobiles more than I do my dog. Of course, I always love those things I could never have in my life. Jay Leno is one fantastic collector of both motorcycles and vintage automobiles. He even has some super-duper quarter-million dollar cars in his collection. He does not let them set in the barn, either - he drives all of them. I think he even has a jet-powered motorcycle.

Well, poor folk like myself will have to settle for what we have.

Something about dependability in terms of motorcycles, CPR!!! Steve wounded me!!!! Hey, it's up and running again, okkkaaayyyyy, Steve!!!

What is all this about the requirements of the ordinary bicycle rider's in California having a new helmet law? I guess the figures on head injuries for bicycle riders are above quota, and now the lawmaker's are pursuing enforcement of the "new helmet law".

We already have been through the skate park helmet thing. The motorcycle and scooter helmet thing. Now it's bicycles. I cannot wait for tricycle helmets for the kiddies.

Well, so much for Grinder's. I'd rather discuss food, anyway.

Posted by

CPR, I like it when the media reports a guy getting killed by traumatic injury to the torso, then reporting that 'he wasn't wearing a helmet'! As if THAT had anything to do with the unfortunate's death...well, maybe it makes for an open casket ceremony versus a closed casket...

I'd probably wear a helmet anyway, regardless of the law...it's just MUCH more comfortable, not to mention quiet...it just irks me that the government makes that decision, not I...but, I DO NOT want to spawn a helmet v. no-helmet confab...

Posted by

Pancone: The temptation to make a smart remark about your skull probably being able to surpass the DOT standards will not happen. Really I didn’t even think it.

Posted by

Hello again, Pancone. Yup...for sure what you said is on-point with all this controversy concerning helmets. Maybe the news story came about from the accident about two weeks ago in Fillmore when this guy riding a bike, at night, was struck by the car; I really do not know exactly what happened, but it must have shaken the bees nest again!

I can visualize what you said in your first paragraph. Would certainly lead to a closed-casket service and wake...and I have been to some of them myself.

I personally feel, sir, that helmets should have a 'soft law' and enforcement policy. Example: if someone is riding a bike say, from Fillmore to Ventura and back, for exercise or a club affair, certainly, I would wear a safety helmet. Around town or to go to someplace truly safe from sizable traffic; no, I do not feel it would be justified to wear one. Defensively, if there are potentials of drunken drivers on the road, or people allegedly on medication, or just not paying attention, (you never can tell, though, they are everyplace), it is discretionary defensive driving to wear a helmet.

Honestly, I never like to wear one. On the highway, of course, no contest here. I always put one on, and pretend I'm a Chipper.

You mentioned something; wearing a helmet is quiet. I like to hear noises around me - horns for one. Most often busses, trucks or other vehicles blow their horns if we are riding motorcycles or bicycles. Helmets hinder my hearing. Lots of accidents occur when two-wheelers suddenly veer to the lane into traffic and then <***wham***>!

I agree government is too big and has too many far-reaching arms nowadays. But if the laws are on the books, enforcement will be made, and we should conform. Happy trails to you...er...happy riding to you, until we meet again!

Tom, be nice, now!

Posted by

CPR, it's impossible for Tom to be nice...in fact, he won't admit this, but he has suggested that my first tattoo be a replica of a DOT sticker on the back of my head...a cruel, cruel man, to be sure...I was...crushed...

Posted by

CPR...actually, I believe that around town and at slower speeds is EXACTLY what helmets are good for! If ya think about it, a helmet is going to offer some very significant protection at speeds up to, what, 25-30 miles per hour! Above that, it becomes a weight at the end of the whip and can work against you...I know that it feels better with no helmet at lower speeds, but...

I wear a 3/4 helmet probably 90% of the time, and I've not noticed any degradation in hearing or visual perception...I very rarely wear a full face helmet, because I want everybody to observe my prettiness. No, I only wear one when it's REALLY cold, or when there are bees and bugs out and about, which is like spring...I have a couple of polo helmets, one is VERY old and the other is DOT approved, and when I get off the scooter, I can hardly hear...there will be those, like Fennell, who will claim that I can hardly hear when I get ON the bike...

But, as far as a 'hard' or 'soft' law, hey, I believe a law is a law, and there's no way you can legislate an LEO's discretion, EXCEPT to determine that you can't stop someone for a particular violation alone...ie: the original seat belt law...you can only cite if you stop them for something else... Kinda silly, I think...

But, CPR, I value your opinion, might be a little different than mine, but interchanges of ideas do lead to opinions ripening, no? The helmet law for motorcycles is here to stay, but I'd sure like to see some enforcement of the bicycle helmet for minors...realistically, that ain't gonna happen either...

Posted by

Yeah, Pancone, I know Tom is a really, really nice guy. He would not hurt a flea...well, maybe 'on second thought'...

You are quite correct, Pancone. The slower speeds around town ARE purposeful for wearing helmets. If someone is running, trips, and slams their head on the curb or sidewalk, it is a crunching experience.

Short true story: I had some work done at my house recently. Now, don't laugh at me for this one; I had a hose hanging from a paint can (so it would not crinkle) at a corner of the house out back. This area had various levels of patio which swung around the corner, and then dropped-off to a foot below the first level, then dropping again off three feet below that one. There was a 2" PVC pipe we had extending from an outside kitchen area, which was set 2' above the concreted area, across the pathway which went direct to the sewer line; which this was part of the construction process was to remove this PVC and put it under 3" of concrete among other things. Well, I came across this pipe, stepping high like a Turkish soldier in marching order, tripped my sneaker toe over the pipe, tripping also over the hanging hose with the other foot and landed flat-face-down on the right side of my face on the second level of concrete. All I heard was a "crack!" I was hurt with a lacerated bottom lip as a result of my lower teeth which went through my bottom lip, and a bad contusion on my right cheekbone and scrapes on my knees and elbows. Bloody nose and all. Just from walking!!!

What would have happened if I were riding and fell even at 15 or 20 mph? I would not want to think about it. Yes, and I admit I'm wrong, wrong, wrong in not wearing my helmet all the time, Pancone. This is my fault and I need to address this with myself and be much better in abiding by our laws here.

My helmet is a regulation police helmet (I have two of them) like the Chipper's wear...like Tony's helmet. I hate the full face type, because mainly, it is too big for my head and cannot hear anything at all.

The 'hard and soft' of the law was not meant as that type of law. As you mentioned, the law is the law no matter how it is shaken out. The pliability of it all is in the enforcement. If my words were mistaken, it is my error; I meant the 'hard' and 'soft' of it, lies in the enforcement. I wonder if it was announced just how many times a day the cops would stop people on scooters, moto's or bikes by not wearing helmets, then I guess the police would have to turn over that responsibility to other enforcers (rookie bicycle cops or special streetside enforcers). This seems inconsistent with public safety, but who knows...it just may hapapen after all.

When you said the analogy of the "whip-effect", I would not want my head slamming into a car's fender or the curbing at 30 mph! I had enough when my head fell on the concrete a "0" mph! Thanks for the return comment, good buddy! Say hello to Tom for me!

Now I just had to look and sure enough I found it on the Internet. Since it's on the Internet it has to be true. Pancone's skull actually has a Rockwell rating of HRC 55! I'm currently researching the density scale findings and will post when complete.

a cruel, cruel little man am I.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge here....I didn't know that you couldn't get pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt. What is with all the "Click it or Ticket" signs? Seems silly.

for what it is worth - I don't mind the seatbelt law at all. =o)

Posted by

Tom F: Heh, heh, heh, heh! Tom, you are going to start something - I just know it!

Mrs. V: I apoligize for quoting here, but; "I didn't know that you couldn't get pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt." I don't quite understand. For NOT wearing a seatbelt, you WONT get pulled over? Excuse me, but I'm not sharpshooting. I'm wondering about the statement.

I will always abide with the seatbelt law, Mrs. V, but often, as I said to Pancone, sometimes I run out on my motorcycles without wearing a helmet. But I think I will begin to. But Tom, I know now that my head does not meet any Rockwell Ratings or DOT Ratings. After my fall on the concrete, head first, it took a week to get my eyes adjusted and back in full working order again. A thick skull does not take the place of that helmet; at least for me, anyway.

Don't worry Cre8PalmRoyal, Pancone knows I'm only kidding. I'm surprised he hasn't responded with my need for a booster seat!

Tom...are you actually THAT short? I thought you were taller than Jamey Brooks.

Actually, Tom, I know that Pancone and you are good buddies. Like Maynard Krebs always used to say, "...that's okay with me, good buddy". Remember, on Dobie Gillis?

Ya; surprises me also, that he is taking so long to respond. When he finally does, most likely he will try to outdo you with another one of his "classics". I cannot wait! It is late now, and I will have to catch you guys on the other side of the moon tomorrow.

Now, there's no reason to toss rocks into other peoples yard and yes I'm pretty short. What I lack in height, I make up for with a sparkling personality and stunningly good looks.

BTW - Pancone is on a 72 hour involuntary hold which most likely be extended on court order. Damn those anonymous sources!

Heh, heh, so, Tom, are you actually saying that you are so short, you can sit on a dime and swing your legs back and forth? You know, Tom, I'm short, too. I'm so short I can 'Limbo Rock' under the door!

How about we form a Keebler Elf club?

Poor Pancone is actually on a 72-hour hold? How much longer do we have to wait? The space shuttle did not take that long to fly from Cape Kennedy this week.

Well, I'm all dressed now and as usual, I have to get to the beach. This is my 'surfing day'. 'Gotta grab my popsicle stick and get at it!

So much for the "Deli in Moorpark - Try it"!

Pancone is out? Darn, the last anonymous tip didn't work.

Posted by

Actually, guys, I'm thinkin' volunteering for the 5250-ten day hold! The food was thimply wonderous! CPR, TF doesn't wear a helmet because nobody makes one in his size that resembles a red gnome hat...and if he gets off his knees, yeah, he's a LITTLE taller than Darth Brooks...but only a little...

Mrs V, when the seatbelt law started out, peace officers were not allowed to make a stop based upon observation of that alone...if they pulled someone over for something else and in the process noticed the seatbelt undone, then they could cite... It was a plain wrap way that the lawmakers thought would get the point across, BUT...cops aren't really wired to handle violations in a plain wrap way...so after a year or so, maybe a little more, I don't remember, it became just like any other law... if ya see it, ya can bust for it...makes a lot more sense...

Well, now that I'm back from my...exile...I can continue to insult that cruel, cruel little man...as it should be...

Pancone, in a Cadillac, like most vehicles, there is a lap belt which is also attached to the shoulder harness. When you open or close the door, the mechanism slides frontwards, or backwards, respectively.

I have a Caddy and when I was traveling along the Pacific Coast Highway last year, I was stopped by a black and white with two of the tallest, biggest, black cops I have ever seen in my life. They stopped me because, as I was getting ready to slide of the highway onto a feeder road, I wiggled-out of my shoulder harness to grab my cellphone which was on the dashboard and ringing. I still had the lap belt on, though.

They caught me, and to the life of me, I do not remember even seeing these phantoms. They came out of nowhere! I had a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt. No matter what I said I could not worm out of it. They told me the shoulder harness is a part of the seatbelt in 'this' car. I got a present from the cops - a ticket. I told the one writing out the citation, they have eyes like an eagle, and I was laughing when I was saying it. They both did not think this was funny at all - no humor.

Gee, Pancone, then from what you are saying, I would like to see a picture of Steve Conaway standing next to Tom sometime. That should give me some idea. Come'on, Pancone...Tom MUST be taller than Jamey Brooks! Can we compare Tom to Pebbles? Can he ride Pebbles? I think now Tom is going to get really ripped-off at us teasing him this way. I'm 'gonna stop it. Right now, I'm probably still on the good side of Tom and hope to stay that way. I don't care if he CAN ride Pebbles.

Posted by

Unusual...chippies don't usually ride in pairs, and I wouldn't think that deputies would care much about a traffic violation...The CHP gets funds based upon seat belt enforcement, some of the cities do too, and if the S/O has a contract with the city, I can see deputies citing for that...

Don't know about Pebbles, but maybe a 54" Sportster is in his future...

Posted by

IF and ONLY IF.... I had a step stool I MIGHT be able to saddle up Pebbles.

Posted by

Pancone, these CHPRS rode together, unless one was a training officer and one was a rookie. I don't know. The one issuing me the ticket seemed to keep looking at the other cop for some reason. They already had 'run' my plate number. I was clean. 1st violation.

Maybe they were looking at each other sort of funny was because I had two pillows on the seat to sit on, and had the seat advanced as far forward as it could go.

Tom...you are funny. In the last three days you have been a cut-up! Now, I see another side of you. I cannot believe you teased Pancone so much and he didn't go ballistic. I can tease to a certain point, but usually, people get mad at me for it. I can get away with poking fun at myself, though, and then everyone agrees with me whatever I say.

But now that I mentioned Pebbles, I may be 'in for it'. If this is the last time I blog, you will know the reason why!

Posted by

He teased me when I was out of town and unable to respond. He knew that. When I got back, it was too late to trot out my 'A' Retorts. Simple as that.

Posted by

Ahhhh, now I see how it is, Pancone. I guess you best watch out behind your back, huh? Well, just tell him next time you see him that you were born at night; but not last night! You know what's happening.

You guys must be best of friends.

By the way, I realize this division is all about the Deli in Moorpark, but I cannot help wondering why there were not so many responses to the Editorial (Realities) and the Letters sections this week from the silent and loud majorities?

It could be that people already know what the truth of what all matters and issues are; probably knew it all along. But you know how I see all of this? I see it as a new car that turns out to be a 'lemon'. I had two of them in my lifetime. It becomes a nickel-and-dimning effect as the new car becomes nearly a piece of junk in no time.

The analogy of this is in direct comparison to the newly-electeds (and their appointed annointed ones) of Fillmore. The system and their engine keeps fluttering, breaking-down and is getting worn fast. So what to do? Trade 'em in! Get rid of the lemon. It it is broken, repair the problem. What seems so complicated as that? Sure it costs pocket money to make the changeover, but it is done.

Even the Fillmoreites can see it. I think they would agree at this time, if they apostatize, it is okay to do this and not be afraid of anyone who says otherwise, not even the new 'cabal's' (mouthpiece and PR Manager; and former campaign manager) 'Master-at-Arms'. However, if I know how the psychology of social Fillmore works, they will await next election and vote these people out of office so fast, they may not have time to clean their desks out. But driving the car until it completely breaks down on the highway and causing collateral damages along the way, is not a very appropriate way to fix the problem.

Well, Pancone, thanks for your ear. I wish someone would put up a new Forum topic soon, something on a nice subject.

Posted by

Tom...pray tell...what is an "arse"?

Posted by

CPR...TF is making some sort of attempt at being PC...or English...one of the two...Maybe he's thinkin' of trading in the Hog for a Triumph Thunderbird...

I agree with ya, that it may very well be WAAAAYYY to late to wait to fix the problem until next election, but as you point out, there is a 'Fillmore way' about problems like this...and I think the reality is such that we will wait until it's too late to fix this one, as I still don't believe that woman/man on the street generally gives a rip as to the chaos at the top...When you figure that out of 15,000 people in town, there's maybe 200-400 in any sort of leadership position (in my opinion) like Sunday school teachers, sports coaches, City commission and Council members, Chamber of Commerce board members, and the like, there's a certain apathy that's always been there in our community. And many of those 200-400 folks actually wear 2-3 leadership hats...

Tell ya what...test this yourself...take a hot topic of any sort that you want to that's germane to today's issues, and just ask, oh, maybe 10-15 random Fillmore residents what they think about that topic...make sure you ask the same questions to everybody, and just see what sort of informed responses ya get...Then share what you found out...

Posted by

Maybe that is a great way to determine fact, Pancone. I feel it may be best to ask this question (once given credence of thought) and enter it to a FORUM topic. This who want to answer can; but maybe we will get the same 6 people in here who always blog, and the people who we really should hear from will refrain from commenting. Maybe your method will work best of all.

With a semi-dysfunctional council, I don't understand with all the financial issues that have been brought up from the depth of Hades since the election, I don't know why Filmoreites have not circulated a Petition yet to rid the town of the rats. Remember the Pied Piper?

Stability, leadership and local economy is no more - it seems it does not exist in operating and managing the city. Even if the new manager/mayor comes on-board, I think his officeship will run head-on into the main triumvirate.

If the people of Fillmore, as a whole, centralized and composite body, notwithstanding the 300 people or so who are in facilitator capacities, simply understand that Fillmore government is central to our federal government.

In this, "government by the people, of the people and for the people" seem non-existent in Fillmore. The city counselors (for the most part) and their appointed Knights, in practice, leave the voting, taxpaying public little room to control their lives and local government under this terrible lack of intellect, competence and ability.

Posted by

Well, CPR, I don't think this forum is the right venue for such an informal survey, because, as Agent 86 has correctly pointed out, it is pretty much a closed society...maybe there are 12-15 folks regularly participating, and I think that the kinds of questions and issues we are talking about should be asked of the guy or gal on the street...I believe that the reason why no petitions have been circulated is because very few folks care enough to go through the bureaucratic processes necessary. Hey, one such motivated guy was Dave Roeghtner (I know I didn't spell that right, my apologies)...he and others worked real hard on their initiative only to be stimied by failing to provide the signatures in the correct form... Don't get the idea, please, that I agreed with their goals, but ya still gotta appreciate their efforts and feel bad just a little bit for their failure...

CPR, you're so correct about stability, but I think that the electorate has been swayed by some slick rhetoric, unfortunately, the chaos created by the new majority isn't in their collective faces yet...It will be come next election, but by and large, when has the Fillmore citizenry really been satisfied with the leadership? Ever? You always hear the whining and complaining, but very, very few want to step up to the plate themselves...and I'm among those who don't want to step into the batter's box, hey, let the other 300 folks handle the leading...I do plead guilty!

At one time, and there are others who frequent this forum, the Council and commissioners were truly non-politicians...they were just folks who wanted to do their best for their community, and they didn't seek election for their own particular agendas...we go back to the days of Dewey Thompson, Frank Munoz, Bill Dewey, Fred Bryce, and others... We really don't think of them as 'politicians' per se...in the last 20 or so years, since the mid-80's, yeah, things have changed, gotten more serious, a lot of out-of-town influences have come into play, and the game has sharpened up a lot...Good or bad? Both, I think...

Pancone, so very true! I'm collecting a lot of reviews today as I got broadsided with some new documents to take under consideration and make reports on, but with this other computer beside me at the same time, I swing into this comment to obligate yours:

Winston Churchill once said, "Rhetoric is no guarantee of survival".

We heard enough pre-campaign and post-campaign rhetoric, didn't we? Right up to those last LETTERS that were printed this week from the cabal and their followers. Survival...I don't think so. Wait until the next election, my good friend!
