Last night the Fillmore Flashes began its 2009 home game stand. Flashes hosted Carpenteria Warriors. What a great game it was. With the score tied 21 - 21 with 9:10 remaining in the game Fillmore Defense came up with a massive goal line stand which turned the ball over on downs. Fillmore took control from their own 2 yard line and began to march downfield. 19 plays later the Flashes, on a QB Sneak, crossed the plain and entered into the Blue & White for what ended up being the game winning touchdown.
Got to give credit to the Flashes running backs, Golson, Paz & Golson for their hard work. I've watched these players since they were 8 years old and they continue to impress. What they lack in size they make up for in speed, agility and determination.
Come on out and watch the Flashes next Friday night. Kickoff time for the JV game is 4:30 and 7:30 for Varsity.
The pressbox was recently repaired. Credit for funding the repairs goes to ASB for funding the work. Thanks for giving back ASB.
Go Flashes!
Steve Conaway

The dedicated FHS Band sounded great as usual. Bolstered by some of the talented Middle School band students, the numbers were impressive. Thank you for doing double duty, Mr. Godfrey!
Absolutely right. The band was great! It was good to see the increased number of band members, like in years past. The band sounded good and kept the spirit high with the fight song, Santana even some old school KC and the Sunshine Band tunes. I look forward to hearing them this Friday night.
Steve
That was a great game this past Friday. The boys did a great job. They just need to work on getting less penalties but never the less great game and the band sounded great. The Star Spangled Banner sounded very good. And Steve as always great job announcing. I think they should have an announcer of the year award and you should get it. You are always fair and never one-sided towards Fillmore. You give credit where credit is due on both sides and when we venture to other towns you don't get that. Great job everyone.
Thanks Jewels, appreciate the comment.
This Friday 10/9 the Fillmore Flashes host Nordoff. JV kickoff time 4:30, Varsity kickoff time 7:30. Make plans to come out and support the Flashes.
Santana...KC & The Sunshine Band...man! Wished I were there to hear this and see that fantastic game, Steve. Continue the effort Flashes.
GO FLASHES!!
10/9: Flashes vs Nordoff Rangers. Final score Nordoff 52 to 14. This was the last non conference game for Fillmore. Fillmore hosts Villanova next week for its conference opener. Coaches should be able to review film and see some areas for improvement. Fillmore was able to move the ball, which was good to see, but was not fell short defensive side of the game. Nordoff has one of the best kickers I've seen in high school ball. This kid was booting 65 yard kick offs like it was nothing. Ojai is roughly 1/2 the size of Fillmore and they fielded a full team with depth. We should be able to do the same. Fillmore has a great feeder program in the Raiders so I'm shocked that our Varsity team is comprised of 21 players. Hats off to Nic Paz and Zach Golson for some hard earned yardage tonight. I didn't see any injuries on either side of the ball which should help in our preparation for league play.
Go Flashes.
Steve
Steve, it would be interesting to survey former Raiders players and find out why they are not playing high school football. Is it grades or other distractions? Maybe kids who played several sports when younger have to limit themselves to the one or two they are best at. Or maybe they eliminate themselves thinking they are not good enough. My guess would be grades though. I think they have to keep a C average for sports.
The Flashes started with a extremely small team this season, which I believe is before grade check. It's not uncommon to lose 1 or 2 kids to grades, which is sad enough in its own right. Of concern is players who choose to not return and play. The loss of experience is difficult to make up, it requires additional effort by coaches to get new players up to speed and it takes a toll on the team. If a core group of players play together long enough they'll gel into a team. Turn-over over the ball and you have to work harder, same with player turn-over.
Each year is unique and while the team maybe small in numbers the player are working hard and coming up with positive experiences each game from what I'm seeing.
A lot can be said for "playing up" in preseason and working to improve. Next Friday the Flashes have their league season opener against Villanova.
This is where the rubber meets the road, all the effort, so far, is geared to prepare the team for league play. Game on.
Steve
By the way big credit to Norm Anderson for his work as the Athletic Director for the Flashes, he's all over the field and stands. He's done an incredible job highlighting other sports and players at halftime, he's opened his arms and highlighted the youth of Fillmore with AYSO soccer demos and Raider Night scrimmages. Each week is always something new, new sponsor banners, new halftime events, etc.
Also props to the Athletic Boosters for their work. The Fire Department and/or FFA are doing a bang up job with the traditional tri tip sandwiches.
The combination of the Middle School and High School band has proven to a an excellent move. Not sure who suggested it or led the effort but great move. The band sounds good and does a great job.
Steve
Short report this morning. In league play the Flashes romped Villanova 56 to 14. In the fourth quartyer Coach Dollar mixed it up a bit with pulling some key starting players, including Quarterback Corey Cole. Running Back Nick Paz took over and led the team. Running the ball was Sammy Orasco and Kicker Ballesteros.
Villanova is a small school which is struggling to field a team. Credit to their players though for being tough and hanging in their.
Next week is Home Coming Week for the Flashes, who will be hosting Malibu. Should be a very very good game. Last night Malibu knocked off Grace Brethen who was given the nod by Ventura County Star as possibly coming out on top in the Frontier league. Like I said it should be a good game.
Don't forget the Home Coming parade down Central Ave Friday afternoon. It would be good to see all business with Blue & White or support signs in the windows and every in attendance wearing Flashes Blue come Friday.
See you at the game.
Steve Conaway
You've got a career waiting in the wings as a sports writer
no, no, pancone, he's needed as a referee----- for City Council meetings. That is his real calling!
But...can't he do...both? Oh, yer right...the referee job is like MORE than a full time gig...
At least all the players are honest, Pancone, in school game-sports!
At least all the players actually know what they are doing, Pancone, in school game-sports!
Yeah..true...musta learned honesty and sportsmanship from their folks!
Gee, Pancone, give some credit to the coach and the assistant coaches, too. This term of honesty in sports being played while in grammar or high school sports can form the very basis for the same principles to be applied to the person's future lifestyles.
Honesty in sports, later transferred into daily life, transferred into daily business dealings, transferred into the very family structure makes a full circle. Then a person forms his or her honesty factor even in private/personal thoughts.
If a person takes few moments and reflects on youth sports many lessons translate to adult life, both good and bad.
Spot-on, Steve! I see this every day in my life. As a former sports and team player throughout high school and my first four years in college in my undergraduate days, (active in swim competition, football, and track (Little League as a youngster), I learned exactly what you posted. Unfortunately, we see people divert sometimes; even ourselves for that instance, from honesty. But it's always best to toe the line playing an honest lifestyle. Ever notice those who do not?
Gee whiz, Steve...I wished I had your brevity!
All true, CPR and Steve...didn't mean to take anything from the sports leadership!
GO FLASHES! TAKE MALIBU FOR A DIP...er...in the ocean that is!
Great job Fillmore football!!! Its just sad to see several of the same old ones ruining a great thing by complaining about city government while talking Flash Football. Shame on ya'll, muddy things up as useal for yor personal gain on the backs of OUR kids. Looking forward to Friday night Flash Football, rocken Fillmore!!
As useal Sheiky, you ruined a great set of posts!
'sheiky'...no references direct or indirect were made of "City Government". I did not see any mention or allusion to "City Government", or anyone in it. You are seeing things that do not appear to the eyes and ears in reality! There is a psychological analysis named for such a condition, 'sheiky'.
If your sole interest is to kick comments of any nature around like the red-headed stepchild for no obvious or apparent reason, best to shut up. You are way off the radar screen...as usual. But anyway, most of us know who you are, as always, with the same style of nonsense.
You guys can't see past your face for your mouths, read your posts, muddy the waters all you want, normal people see past your inuendos. If you really think you scored on this one, think again, personal foul unnessesary mouthing. Look into the mirror and ask yourself, am I a man or a mouth. Remember I have just as much right as you to space just like everyone in the free world, maybe not yours, but still this is the good ol USA, not grumpy ville.
For the life of me sheiky I can't dicipher what you're trying to say. Who said anything about space rights? Isn't the old saying "man or mouse", not man or mouth? Your free world has less rights than another free world???? If so is your world truly free? I know Grumpy, he races and builds street-luges and lives in Bakersfield. what does your post have to do with Flashes Football?
The Homecoming Parade will make it's way down Central Ave on Friday. The floats are being built as I type this nonsensical post. The students have a full week of activities upon their return to school tomorrow. Bash a car, theme dress up days etc. Friday night it's all business under the lights.
Can't we just get along on Friday night?
Shieky is grumpy...sheiky is grumpy...
Pancone...did you say 'sheiky' is "GRUMPY"...OR "GUMBY"??
Oh dear Pancone, CPR--I do beleive I started this raucous ruckus! I think our dear Shiek is upset over my comment about Steve Conaway being a referee, but needed at the City Council. My goodness, Oh Grumpy Leader, it was a JOKE! Did I really climb on the backs of those players to make a little funny?? How could I have been so insensitve...hey, wait a minute, have you see the size of those guys??
Shame on you then, FN! You know we shouldn't make Shieky grumpy! It's a good thang you had the opportunity to climb on their backs...we mortals usually end up on the opposite end when they stomp us! LOL (That's Laughing Out Loud, Sheiky...we're making a funny...)
oh, dear...I think I heard an "I AM NOT AMUSED" coming from the puter!
Really, guys...I do not think 'sheiky' understands one iota of what is being said here.
In the "Oh, By The Way Department", I think I saw somewhere in this site, that the FILLMORE FLASHES are nearly set to play Malibu soon!
Please don't worry too much more about 'sheiky', folks. We know when he is feeding from the trough!
[STATEMENT REMOVED FOR VIOLATION OF TERMS OF SERVICE]
Uh, oh...sorry Gazette...I may have 'bumped the line' a little, myself.
Gee CPR, just what did ----Verna the Vixen say to get her booted?? I missed that one!!
FN, Verna the Vixen said nothing different than what You, Pancone, and your boomerang friend are permitted to say.(oops did i give it away? I didn't think a name change would fool you)
You sound like such a very unhappy person 86.You dont have anything positive to say? And why do you care who I talk to, who I acknowledge, or who I forgive. If we've made peace, is that any of your business?
I'm unhappy?? you people have been bellyaching about the CC for 11 months!! and you're right i don't care who you talk to...have a nice day :)
A86...when we 'bellyache' about the Council, it's done with FACTS... and it's based on FACTS... There are some folks like Roy who have trotted out FACTS yet you and others all seem to stick y'alls heads in the sand and ignore the documented FACTS... Do I like bellyachin' about the Council? No. But if the Council majority would begin to deal with FACTS and respond accordingly, that would be more than acceptable... You don't just take office, kick your support system in the teeth, and expect them to wait around for more abuse...and that was just for a start...and it got better from there!!!
HOWEVER, that said, I believe that the hiring of the new CM is the first step toward getting everything back on track...from all appearances, she will take a moderate and even-handed approach to righting the ship... that is, if WWB pay attention and let her do her job... Micromanaging staff will NOT get it done...and I think you, A86, might agree with that!
...and ironically, before the election last year, you and your pals did nothing BUT bellyache about the old council... But again...that's one of the indications of the Cabal and friends... hypocrisy, and a VERY short memory...
Hey, I'm just sayin'...
WELL 86, you seem awful concerned with what I've said and to whom...seems like that is the only time you come in here to post--is to take pokes at me. You know how boys in grade school ignore the girls, except to run over and pull their pigtails?? That's the feeling I get here..
There is more than just criticism of the City Council here on the Gazette, the stories and the posts range from a variety of opinions, with lots of ideas. You cant paint everything here with such a broad stroke. Why not come on here with some honest ideas and thoughts, leave the animosity aside. I think you'd be surprised at how welcome you might be.
I would like A86, Shieky, Velma, whomever, to present some facts and figures to back their play...in a year and a half or more, I haven't seen a whit of that...
See, seems Agent 86, aka all those other "knowns" he holds, and for what reason; does just this...runs around and pokes remarks here and there, and holds absolutely nothing to relate to a material and reasonable conversation. I don't think he ever did, except for one time he commented to me in candor about his blue "photo-op" sport shirt. This was the only comment he made at any time, which made halfway decent rhetoric.
FillmoreNative...no matter what "Verna-Vixen" said, or who registered under that name (although it is known), I can say this much; who really cares what was stated. If Martin decided it was off-color, the rights to remove it are well appropriated. On my user-name - when I change post names for some reason, which, by the way were all valid reasons, I ALWAYS sent an email message to Martin through Scott, alerting them of the user-name change and most likely the reason why. I have nothing to hide and if someone wants to know about me, all they need to do is ask. Martin and Scott know if anyone wants to see my ID address, I can give permission if I know who is requesting it.
I agree with you, FillmoreNative, wholeheartedly, in this commenting, and same with Pancone and others, if we express our honest opinions and oftentimes provide facts, or at least allude to facts, and depict obvious situations, etc, it is well-worth the comment. Other newspaper mediums spread all over the world have comments posted by people with much more lack of sense and compassion, so apparently David Roegner cannot understand this. Shows his mentality and emotional levels. Now, Pancone, your statement above mine here, proves Dave does not have a platform. He could not hold his own battleground using a Red Ryder BB gun against heavy artillery and the reasons of facts why the war was waged initially. So much for Mr. Roegner.
One more ditty, Dave...I think anyone in having a whit of sense (thanks Pancone for that four-letter word) would know who posters are herein. Cannot you understand people at all? Whatever my life, or FillmoreNative's life is...or your life for that matter, we all have sheer respect for it, and for each other. It are actions which destroy the images we have, and most often those actions come from ourselves alone.
I can say here and now, I made poor decisions in the past. My life decisions on work and all were excellent choices and pursuits, however. But life goes on. For one person in Fillmore, I happen to feel devoted to until this day! I feel the pains of the decision made, and wishes cannot bring it back. But, in a compassionate world albeit in a dreadful world at the same time, what FillmoreNative told you is true: "Why not come on here with some honest ideas and thoughts, leave the animosity aside. I think you'd be surprised at how welcomed you might be." Learn lessons, Dave...I have, and still learning!
NOW CAN WE RETURN TO FLASHES FOOTBALL?
Well, the past is the past, time to leave it in the past and move on. As far as Martin letting us post anything, not so 86--I've been booted, so have several others. Teaches you to think before you post! I think Martin has been more than fair and tolerant, because we all have that child within that likes to rear its ugly head! Martin must feel like he's overseeing a Kindergarten class here sometimes!
Martin actually IS, FN! He is overseeing a kindergarten class. Want me to give you the names of the students in alphabetical seating order? I have also been given "Das Boot"...the Airborne Boot, at that...by Martin, so none of us hold immunity.
So back to the original post...Go Flashes. Tonight is homecoming and they play Malibu...so let's go guys. We'll be rooting for you.
Ah...SO TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT!! Flashes and Malibu. Malibu is where my close friends live and whom have bet me $200.00 against Fillmore. Well, I also laid my $200.00 down on the FLASHES! We will see...we will see...!
You should have seen the game. Malibu came out hard and fast putting 10 points on the board quickly. Late in the 2nd quarter fortune fell on Fillmore and the Flashes found the end-zome several times. We ran the ball like fiends, Paz, Golson and Cole put points on the board. Flashes defense came up with some key turn overs and added more points. In the end the score was something like 48 to 21. Honestly lost track of the score. My voice started cracking and was close to giving out at halftime.
It was Alumni Cheerleader night and what a sight it was. Carmen rocked the house as she danced and shook that pom poms, at around 83 years of age. She even jogged to the end zone several times. The crowd was going wild.
Also Homecoming with the King/Queen being announced. Congratulations to all. Seniors won the float competition. Big surprise. They've won it since time began.
The band sound great as always.
We also recognized all Senior Band members, Cheerleaders and Football players. They were escorted by parents in most cases.
Awesome night.
Next week the Flashes travel to Santa Paula for the 99th match up between the schools. This is always a packed game, standing room only, hard hitting contest. This is the game that each school looks to.
I'm worked. Time for bed.
Steve Conaway
41 to 16 final. Fillmore over Malibu.
Steve
Always....Steve, it always seems when even a boxer comes out fighting hard for the first few rounds, he peters out and things go south (generally speaking) from that point. Malibu may have become overwhelmed and tired too quickly...Fillmore seemed to just lay back and take Malibu's operational plans to mind, and then struck from there.
Two military factors I learned while in "War College" (this has many names) as a Navy Lieutenant Commander: Strategic and Tactical. Those two theories of thought can be applied anywhere, if you think about it. So, seems as though Fillmore players and the coaching team used great planning in this game.
Wild Night In Fillmore! I would have loved to see the exuberance of Carmen, dancing and pom-pom-ing! Racy! So...41 to 16 and I will be sent $200.00!
Thank you, Steve, for such a night report. And thanks to THE FILLMORE FLASHES! Now it is on to tromp Santa Paula!
10/30/09 Fillmore vs. Santa Paula @ Santa Paula.
JV Kick off 4:30
Varsity Kick off 7:30
Nice article in the Star today on the rival game. This will be the 99th match up between the schools. When means the centinial game will be played in Fillmore.
Both teams have similar records and both will be trying to hit on all cylinders tonight. It should be a great game. Come early and grab a hard piece of conrete to sit on. It will be a packed crowd for sure.
Without saying "Go Flashes".
Steve Conaway
Steve...if Carmen will be there at the game again...ask the Gazette folks if they can take a shot of two of Carmen waving those pom-pom's.
Wait a minute...I already saw her in the Malibu photo runup, with the white pom-pom's. Taake another shot, anyway! What a gal!!
What a game, what a game. Final score Fillmore 41 Santa Paula 34.
This was the best Fillmore / Santa Paula game I've seen to date. Both teams were well matched and came to play ball. It was like watching two heavy weight fighters stand toe to toe and slug it out. 2:00 minutes left in the game and it was tied up 34 / 34. Fillmore had the ball and began to do put together a 60 yard march down the field. They attacked with runs and passes and running out of bounds to stop the clock. Several of the first down Fillmore found itself on 4th down with 3 or more yards to convert. Each time they did. Cole drops back and floats one into the endzone for a Flashes catch to take the score to 41. 12 seconds remain on the clock and SP tries one last play, a pass. The pass was picked off by Fillmore to close out the game.
The crowd was awesome! Many in the crowd went to school in SP but now live in Fillmore and visa versa. We were sitting next to some great SP fans and had a great time talking to them. The stands were filled to overflow conditions.
For the 99th match up I don't think it could have been a better game.
The Leather Helmet transfers back to Fillmore and will on dispatch at the High School. It doesn't look like much but the players honor it.
Gutsy play calling for Fillmore also. Paz, Golson, Golson and Cole really mixed it up.
And a Fillmore person took home th 50/50 drawing to boot. All in all a pretty good night for Fillmore.
The Star should have a good write up on the game in the morning paper.
Go Flashes!
Steve
HEY...GO FLASHES!! Way to go!! SP will be hunting for Bear next game! But so will the Flashes!
Tonight the Flashes completed their final regular season game (next week they have a bye week). Flashes traveled to Moorpark College to play against Grace Brethen from Simi Valley. GB had been given the early nod by Eads at the Star for taking the Frontier League Championship, of course that was early in the season. GB has a very talented Junior QB who can rack up some passing yardage, along with some speedy kids to run the ball when needed. Last game they logged over 400 yards.
Tonight the Fillmore Flashes came to play some ball! The Flashes chewed up the field all night long. What a shoot out it was. GB never kicked on 5th an long, they never attempted to kick a PAT, they never kicked deep on kickoffs. Unusual, in my opinion. Cole, Paz, Golson, Golson and the whole O line moved the ball on command. Not sure of the final stats but my guess is Fillmore had over 450 yards. Defense came up big with picks and some turn overs. Since our roster is short out players play both ways and what a job they did. Paz had one very memorable pass coverage in the end zone which was simply beautiful to watch. At one point Cole lofted a 30 pass to De La Cruz who lumbered down field.
It's easy to lay the kudos on specific players but in all honestly this was a complete team effort. Final Score Flashes 56 Grace Brethen 38.
Congratulations to the Flashes for your out right 2009 Frontier League Football Championship! Broken is the "Co-Championship" stigma. Awesome job Flashes.
Fillmore has a bye next Friday then onto CIF Playoffs. Good luck.
Next Friday I recommend all Flashes fans travel to Santa Paula to watch Santa Paula / Grace Brethen game. Go Grace Brethen Lancers!!!!!!
We should all wear our Blue and White and sit with GB and support them against SP.
Steve Conaway
The Flashes will be the home team for Game 1 of the CIF Playoffs. Fillmore will match up with Yucca Valley for this Friday first round play off game. Come on out and support the Blue and White this Friday!
Go Flashes!!!!!
Steve Conaway
Steve...did the City or the High School install new turf this year? I cannot recall if the playing field had new grass or astroturf installed. In any case, the Flashes should be used to playing on home turf this game. Really wished I was available to see these games, or, at least, to hear you announce the play-by-play...
GO FLASHES!!!! (Do it again...ONE MORE TIME!)
The field was completely renovated last year. All weather track, artifical grass, lights, sound system and "repaired" announcers booth.
The majority of the funds for the work came from the School District. The city bought the old pool area and the funds from that sale went to assist with the overall revamping of the football stadium. The city and school reached an agreement to disperse recycled water via underground drip system at the high school baseball field. Funds for that came for the city, along with resodding the field after the subsurface irrigation was completed. The field is very close to being ready for use. The entire area looks so nice! Fillmore should be proud of the work done by both the school and the city.
And yes, Go Flashes this Friday. I'm hoping my voice holds out.
"And that's another Flashes....."......
Appreciate the recall, Steve, as I remember now the Gazette published both photos and nice articles mentioning the upgrading, etc, to this field and other sections. I remember, also, the baseball coach was upset a little about standing water on the baseball field, and now, this problem has also been corrected.
FLASHES...have a great game this coming Friday evening! We are counting on each and every one of the players and coaches to give it their best...and I know they will!
GO FLASHES!!!
Steve, I got this from a friend, thot you might know or could do some research?
in 1973 the football team went the furthest in the CIF playoffs in the history of the high school, last year I think the football team tied that, but didn't break or set the CIF record, for the school, they had a better record but didn't go any further than the 1973 team, correct or incorrect?
1977 Team
Coaches: Bruce Dempsey, Tom Ecklund & Bob Taylor
Captains: Brett Dempsey & Tommy Dann
Teams In League: Fillmore, Moorpark, Bishop Diego, Carpinteria & St. Bonaventure
Season Record: 10-2
Lead By: Mike Legan - Team MVP & All CIF Defensive-Player-of-the-Year
Tommy Dann - Team Defensive Player-of-the-Year
Even then we were still called the Fillmore Flashes. The team ran the old Dempsey “Power 1”, which means five yards and a cloud of dust.
That year they beat Santa Paula on their own home field 6-0. During that game the Flashes allowed 0 completions for 0 yards passing. That is a record that can be tied, but never broken.
Going into the last game of the season the Flashes were tied in league with Carpinteria. Both teams were undefeated. Fillmore came away with the win 12-0. Lead by Mike Legan on defense with 7 sacks, David Pillado – Running Back, Chip Bowlin – QB and Tommy Dann- Middle Linebacker.
During CIF Playoff in the 1st Round they defeated Nellis, which was a prison, not a camp. The Flashes team were playing against murderer’s, rapists’ and thieves and came off victorious.
During the 2nd round the Flashes lost to Santa Ynez, but up until that point the team only gave up 45 total points on defense, which averages out to be about 4.5 points a game.
The Flashes only other loss that year was to Nordhoff.
Thanks to Lynn Cole for supplying the information.
Steve
...and here I thought you had special insight...but no, Lynn comes through AGAIN!! Well, I reckon you did have some special insight...you knew where to go for the right info!!!
THANKS STEVE!! will pass it on~!
Ya, Pancone (again and again), and I just KNEW Steve must have had some 'old-timer' news reports in his scrapbooks somewhere stashed in the attic corners of his house gathering cobwebs, OR...or...he jogged over to the Gazette or the library and found what he was looking for and could not wait to get to his computer (nearly exactly 4 hours later) when FillmoreNative posed his/her question. Heh, heh...
As I was reading, I was also figuring on the SIZE of the players on the FLASHES team-ship back in 1977. In comparison to the players of the FLASHES of today, how do they rate in size? I know the players on my high school team (believe me, this is true...I was the first-string Quarterback at this private ROTC campus) were giants! They towered above me by at least 1 foot or more. I was only 5'6" and about 150 pounds back then, but could control numbered plays, signals and throw that ball to any player on the run, anticipating his speed and direction perfectly.
At first, the coach did not give me one ounce of attention when I asked him if I could throw the ball to the players a few times. One Saturday afternoon he gave in as a joke. The rest was history for awhile. I got tromped by other team players who broke our line sometimes, but it was fun all the same. I still have that little trophy the Sports Department gave me on my graduation.
When I was a nose guard/center back in the day, I weighed a whopping 157 pounds...listed at an optimistic 170 pounds...which is what I prolly weighed at the start of football camp...
Well, actually, our players on the team were not coming in at any 6'6"; as I was 5'5" tall, as I said, they were a foot taller than I was, but to me, anyone over 5'8" tall (which is my height now) is tall. I'm now at a good 175 pounds, but it is mostly around the waist. Did Steve Conaway play football at all I wonder? I wonder if Tom Fennell played ball? He got teased so much about his height before. You know, Pancone, some of the players who had been instrumental on professional football teams were about my height when they played.
I was discussing this earlier today with a friend of mine and he said by the looks of US basketball players, there is nothing exciting anymore about watching the games. The players are all coming in at least 6'7" or more...some of them nearly 7'4". All they do is just play the ball and drop it in the basket. He said that the NBA should average the heights of all the players on the teams (playing for score), and raise the basket (on a sliding pole structure or something) accordingly to make the game more interesting and fair.
Now, the basket is a regulation 10' above floor-level. I don't think the intent was to have it at this height when the height of players were about 5'10 or so "back then" when it was evoluted as a sport.
It wasn't pretty but the Flashes got the win tonight. Flashes 41, Yucca Valley 14. The Flashes will advance to round 2 of the Eastern Division South Section CIF Playoffs. Next Friday make plans to get of work early, fill your tank with gas because Fillmore will be road tripping to Bishop! Bishop beat Brentwood tonight with a score of 21 - 20.
In my opinion the Flashes had some trouble and it didn't seem like they were running on all cylinders, nevertheless a win is a win.
Chris DeLaPaz caught a Corey Cole pass and took it to the house. Paz, Golson, Golson and Cole all played a hard game and took some beating, but like the energizer bunny they just keep on coming at ya.
TONIGHT I'M GIVING BIG CREDIT TO THE FLASHES OFFENSE LINEMAN. OUR PLAYERS WERE OUTSIZED BUT THEY DIDN'T ALLOW ONE SACK TONIGHT. GREAT JOB O-LINE.
All right maybe it wasn't ugly, perhaps it was street fight all night long.
Go Flashes!!!!!!
Bishop? Wow...an excuse to go to Bishop...
Hi Steve, my friend still thinks class of 73 was one for the record books? Here is his post--
"ok I'm talking about the 1973 team, their league record wasn't that good but (we), they, went the farthest of any team in the history of the school, in the CIF playoffs, (not to be beaten, but tied ),,,,,right or wrong??? "
Roadking. Boy's ;I m so proud of each and every one of you! Especially with such a small group of you playing.I am sure many of you are having to play both sides of the ball too.Keep up the good work. Have a good week of practice.Don't eat too much garbage on Thanksgiving .And good luck. You make me proud to say I am from Fillmore!!Wear your Under Armour too!! It's pretty cold up there this time of year! I remember playing at Paso Robles in 79 as a sophomore in 14 degree weather. We were afraid to hit anyone as we thought we would break if we did.Just stay warm guy's and you will do fine.GO FLASHE'S!!!
Congratulations FLASHES on your win over Yucca V! Move along into Bishop now and remember, being psyched is just as important is being physically ready for play. Keep up that drive!
GO FLASHES!
FN, I don't know if it was 1977 or 1973 that went furthest in playoffs. I asked the school and they sent over the 1977 team storeline.
To get to the definitive answer it'll take more time to uncover the answers. Remember we're talking about a school (my alma mater) which lost the time capsule. Either way Go Flashes!
Don't feel so bad about your high school losing the time capsule, Steve (and other's)...my school did not even have one. In fact, all the kids who attended were 95%-wise, from out-of-state. I lost my graduation yearbook!
Kind of interesting to see what you uncover about the CIF Championship's year, etc. Any wild guesses? My guess it was 1973. Any prizes for the correct guess? (The Gazette is not talking about awarding more prizes, Steve...you notice?) Hehehehehe!
LOL Steve, still looking for that time capsule? Thanks, I'll send him this, maybe some of the Gazette readers can recall??
What about the late 40's when Don Burroughs played for the Fillmore Flashes? Who did the teams way back then do?
Johny Walker
I just found this. Thought i'd pass it along
Fight on for Fillmore sing of her fame.
Stand up for Fillmore shout out her name
As her colors wave on high
Come on you Flashes hit the sky
We love our colors, our white and blue
We'll do our best to fight on for you
We're for you so don't forget to
Fight on for Fillmore High.
Johny Walker
Johny Walker...please sing it for us...none of can hear you!
..."none of US can hear you". Sorry!
The Booster Bus pulled out of town around 1 PM or so. Weather conditions in Bishop are calling for mid to low 40's with 40% chance of rain around 9PM.
Go Flashes.
I wasn't present, but word back to Fillmore is final score Bishop 29, Fillmore 0. Bishop will advance to the semi-final game next Friday. The Flashes had a great run this season, and while the ending wasn't to anyone liking it does not underscore what was achieved this year. A team mainly comprised of under classmen and few in numbers (22 on the roster) you represented yourself, your school and your town in a manner that you can be proud of. We're all very proud of you. Thanks for a great season! Go Flashes!

Oh! Whatever shall I do? I go to Bishop several times a year, and I shall never be able to hold my head up again! Woe is me!
Naw, seriously, that was a great season for The Flashes! Real hard to step off a bus and play like yer at home, plus it's high altitude, so our guys did REALLLL good!
git yur cowboy hat and pull er down real low pardner, they'll never know it's you.
Good job Flashes!
Good thing I have a good selection, eh? They'll be expecting last year's hat!!!
Ya know, talk about school rivalries...my GF & I were in SPla a month ago watching a band play, and she made the mistake of telling some of the locals...not particularly astute individuals, if ya know what I mean...that I was from Fillmore...we had never discussed this...but we did shortly thereafter!!! Coulda got a bit ugly, but...they liked me!
They liked you. The really really liked you?
Probably not...I was just too pretty for them...
I remember my daughter getting jumped in Santa Paula...'just because' she was from Fillmore---my my...
Just wondered if anyone recalls when the lady who worked at Roatcaps Christmas tree farm, pulled out of the farm, on to 126, going towards Santa Paula. I remember my kids being real little, so this might have been around 1980? She had put her cash box in back of the little truck, and all of a sudden we see money flying everywhere!! We pulled over right away and so did everyone else, going both ways, and started grabbing cash and chasing 20's! It must have been a sight! Boy did we have a good Christmas that year...JUST KIDDING...it was really a sight, because everyone was running up to this lady, handing her cash, and heading back to grab more. She just stood there crying and stunned. Kind a says something for both communities, doesnt it?
