The Flashbacks were sent out last Friday, thanks to the hard work of Joyce Basolo, Linda Durand, Maxine Merry, Jane Johnson, Joleen Stethem, Em Wendel and Ellyn Mosbarger, and all paid up members should have already received their copy. If not, please call the alumni office, 524-0416.

The alumni board met Monday, August 16, and the main topic of discussion was the DVD of the 99 game history of the Fillmore/SantaPaula football rivalry. Interviews are still being made by Isaac Reyes, who is putting the DVD together, along with film clips of some of the memorable Fillmore/Santa Paula football games. Isaac is putting together a two to three minute "teaser" on Facebook so you can see what the DVD will be like. When this is available, a notice will appear in this column and on the alumni website. Pre-orders are now being taken for the DVD--$20 if you pick it up at the alumni office or at the 100th football game on Friday, November 12, or $25 if it is shipped to you. The completed DVD will be available after November 1, so please get your orders in now so you will be assured of having one.

A recap of the alumni dinner that was held on June 12 was made, and all agreed that it was one of the best that the alumni has put on. Plans are already being made for next year's dinner on June 4. Note the earlier date and please put it on your calendar.

It was moved, seconded and passed that we need to reframe the class pictures that are on display at each alumni dinner, as they are beginning to fall apart. Most of these frames were assembled 20 years ago and they are beginning to show some wear and tear.

The alumni board will begin to contact alumni members who are not subscribers to the alumni newsletter, Flashbacks, or are not Life Members, to encourage them to become at least subscribers, as this helps support the many activities in which the alumni is involved.

The board of directors will work towards informing the seniors at Fillmore High about the alumni association and what it does for graduates of F.H.S. and to encourage them to keep the alumni office apprised of any address changes. This is very important to keep the alumni files up to date. Information will be passed out during Career Day at the high school, and when Mark talks to the seniors regarding alumni scholarships in January.

The Fillmore High Sports Hall of Fame committee has completed its review of over 200 applications and has selected 80 of the top athletes from the past 96 years of Fillmore High School athletics programs. These athletes, along with six coaches and the outstanding athletic teams of Fillmore High will be recognized and inducted into the first class of the Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 13, the evening after the 100th football game.

Over two hundred fifty alumni and guests enjoyed an outstanding alumni dinner when they met Saturday at the Memorial Building to celebrate the 97th alumni banquet. Under the direction of Vice President, Mark Ortega, and with the assistance of the entire alumni board, the evening was carried out in a quick and efficient manner.

The evening started with much visiting my alumni members from the 1930's through the 1980's, including the ten recently graduated seniors who received alumni scholarships. The dinner part of the evening was opened with the posting of the colors by members of Troop 406 of the Boy Scouts, followed by the serving of the meal by the Bardsdale 4-H, which was prepared by Gary Laird Catering.

Honored classes from 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, 1965, and 1970 were recognized, with many class members traveling quite some distances to be in attendance. Alumni members from Virginia, Texas, New Mexico, Montana, Arizona, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii were all in attendance.

Door prizes, which were provided by Lupe Vasquez, Gertrude Gathright, Carmen Zermeno, Beylik Family Farms and Mission Produce were given out to lucky winners. The 50-50 raffle was won by Sandra Warring O'Connor who came from Hawaii.

The entire evening was deemed a huge success by those in attendance, as well as the alumni board, who are already planning next year's banquet, which will be held on Saturday, June 4. So mark your calendars as it should be another great occasion.

Fillmore High Alumni Association

The May issue of the alumni newsletter, Flashbacks was put in the mail on Monday, so you subscribers should have received it by the time you read this in the Gazette. Some cities are slower than others, but if you don't receive your copy by next Monday please call the alumni office at 805-524-0416. Or if you have moved or changed your mailing address, please let us know that also. Kathleen McCreary has done another excellent job of putting the information, that alumni members have sent in, into this issue. If you have any comments or information you would like to see in the August issue, please send it in to the alumni office.

The May meeting of the alumni board of directors was held Monday night, and the main item of discussion was the alumni dinner, which is coming up on June 12 at the Memorial Building. Six classes are planning reunions, several of which will be held in conjunction with the alumni dinner, so be sure to get your reservations in for the dinner as soon as possible. Also discussed at the board meeting was the developing of the DVD to bring to light the history of the 99 game football series between Fillmore and Santa Paula, which will be highlighted by the 100th game to be played in November in Fillmore. Isaac Reyes, a graduate of Fillmore High is developing the DVD with interviews with former players of some of those games and snippets of films from games played during the previous seasons. The DVD will be available on November 1, but orders for the DVD will be taken starting with the alumni dinner on June 12. A short preview of the film will also be shown at the dinner.

In attempting to contact alumni members regarding the interviews for the CD of the 99 year history of the Fillmore/Santa Paula football rivalry, we are finding many addresses are not current. This also is true in assisting the Fillmore High Sports Hall of Fame in contacting candidates for the first class of the Hall of Fame. In order to contact alumni members, it helps the alumni association if you would keep your mailing addresses up to date. If you have changed your address recently, or within the last five years, or haven't notified the alumni office since leaving home after graduating from high school or college, please contact us at: staff@FillmoreHighAlumni.com or 805-524-0416. The Fillmore High Sports Hall of Fame committee has sent out over 150 letters to former Fillmore High athletes asking for information regarding their athletic achievements in high school, college, professional and/or amateur sports, to determine the electees for the first class in the Hall of Fame. Many applications have been received and more are expected by the deadline of June 1, 2010. So far, some very interesting and informative letters have been received by Chairman, Joe Woods, from athletes or their families. After the deadline of June 1, the committee will score the applications and determine the individuals who will be accepted into the first class of the Hall of Fame. Some original letters are being returned as "Unable To Forward", so in order to try to contact these individuals, we will be running a list, in future issues of The Gazette, in hopes that someone will know the location of these people for whom we have no addresses. If you know of someone who needs to be considered for this honor, please contact Joe at the high school, 524-6100.

Football season in May? Well, in Fillmore the excitement is building as we prepare for Football at Fillmore High, 2010. When Fillmore High plays Santa Paula High this year, it will be the 100Th meeting between these two teams. Fillmore High is hosting this grand event and they are already gearing up for a Big Crowd, and hopefully a memorable game.
The Alumni Assoc is participating in this years event by selling a DVD Documentary of the History of the football game between Fillmore High, and Santa Paula High. Isaac Reyes, Class of 94', and his counter parts at FX (Fox Cable group) will be compiling interviews, stories, and old game film along with photos of this Rivalry. They are looking at somewhere between a 45 minute and one hour documentary of this 99 game history.

The Alumni Assoc is very excited about this fund raiser, and Pre-Orders will be accepted starting this Summer, and running all through the fall. The Documentary will become available on November 1st, 2010. Cost for this DVD is $20.00, and $25.00 if you wish to have it packaged and mailed to an address. This would make a great Christmas or Birthday gift for any Alumni of Fillmore High. There is a Facebook page (Fillmore/Santa Paula 100Th Rivalry), and soon they will post a 30 or 40 second clipping of the DVD. If you wish to see a longer clip of the DVD, come to the Alumni Dinner on June 12Th. You can be one of the first to place their pre-order video at the Dinner.
The current record of this Rivalry is 55-37-7, Santa Paula. The last 5 years, Fillmore leads 3-2. The last 10 years, Santa Paula leads 6-4. The last 20 years, Santa Paula leads 12-8, but only one Team will win the Century Mark!!

Only two more months until the alumni dinner and the convening of class reunions for five classes who will be having class gatherings prior to the alumni dinner, as well as after the dinner. Four other classes will be holding reunions later in the summer and fall. The class of 1990 will hold its 20th class reunion July 31 at the Ventura Marriott Hotel from 5:00 to midnight with a dinner and dance. The alumni association reminds members that we are still looking for subscribers to the alumni newsletter, Flashbacks. The subscription not only brings the newsletter, which keeps you up to date on what is going on in Fillmore with the alumni association and the high school,but also helps fund the many alumni activities during the year. The Scholarship Committee of the Alumni Association received twenty seven applications from seniors of Fillmore High for the 2010 alumni scholarships. The committee, which consists of Mark Ortega, Kathleen McCreary, Corinna Mozley, Betty Carpenter, Liz Kemp and Dick Mosbarger, scored the applications, which consists of an autobiography, grade point average and involvement in school and community activities, to determine the top applicants. These seventeen will be interviewed by the committee on Wednesday, April 14 to determine the top individuals in this year's class. All applications will then be sent to Mr. John Lemley, class of 1961, who will also score the applications, and will determine the top two applicants who will receive the John and Nit Lemley scholarships, which consists of a $2500 scholarship for two years plus a one time $500 stipend towards a lap top computer. The remaining fifteen applicants will receive alumni scholarships, which will be presented at the awards assembly in June. The seventeen finalists are: Susana Amezcua, Susan Bolanos, Andre Casas, Esteban Casas, Anthony Chavez, Jazmin Galvez, Armanda Hernandez, Mariela Inda-Ramirez, Alejandra Lopez, Megan Louth, Moneh Magdaleno, Kelsey MacDonald, Kellsie McLain, Conchita Meza, Lena Stehly. Rebecca Vassaur and Deanna Villagomez.

The Alumni Association is also working to update the address files for all alumni members, so if you, or anyone you know has recently moved, please notify the alumni office at 805-524-0416, or at: staff@FilmoreHighAlumni.com so we can keep the files current. We are also asking that those alumni members who are not subscribers to the alumni newsletter, Flashbacks, to please consider doing so, as your subscription not only brings you the newsletter, but it also helps keep the association operating and allows us to support the activities that help the high school. This past year the alumni association has re-started the Shasta Daisy project to provide the flowers for the arches for graduation and has purchased two banners for the gym, which provide the words to the alma mater and to the school's fight song. The Board of Directors would especially like to see all former scholarship recipients sign up to receive the newsletter, which is only $20 per year. Class reunions for this year are taking shape with six classes sending in information regarding their class gatherings. Fillmore High Alumni Association

The November meeting of the Board of Directors of the Fillmore High Alumni Association was held at the home of Marla DeZavala, with eight of the eleven members present. Several issues were discussed during the meeting. The alumni association is donating two six by twelve foot banners to the high school to be hung in the gym. One banner will have the words to the alma mater and the other will be the words to the fight song. The alumni board has become aware that many students do not know the words to these two songs and feel it is important that they know them as part of the tradition of Fillmore High School. The banners will be presented to the study body at a home basketball game in January. Mark Ortega and Trish Gradias proposed to sell tamales at Christmas time to help raise funds for the high school band uniforms. They have everything all set up, but the determining factor if this will take place is the securing of a Certificate of Insurance, which we must have before doing this. We are looking into securing this certificate from our insurance company. Barry Thompson brought up the subject of the alumni sponsoring a golf tournament next June 11, on the Friday before the alumni dinner on June 12. This event also needs a Certificate of Insurance. If we can't get the certificate, Barry says he will put together a golfing event for anyone wishing to play golf on the Friday before the alumni dinner. Brenda Feeney Diaz, class of '78, was voted in as a new member, beginning with the February, 2010 meeting. Mark and Trish, along with Steve Conaway manning the P. A. system, sold 36 of the alumni coffee mugs at the football game played Friday, November 20. The Shasta Daisies have been planted in the area on the east side of the football field, and we are hoping to get a picture of that area to the paper soon. The alumni is still asking for financial support to help pay for the daisies that were purchased for this planting. Any amount you wish to donate will be greatly appreciated. So far, eight members have contributed to the fund. Subscription renewals for the Flashbacks are coming in, so if your subscription runs out this year, please send in your renewal as soon as possible. The picture of the Bardsdale students that was in the November Flashbacks has prompted responses from Patty King, Bob Morris and Marie McCoy identifying many of the students. We really appreciate their response, and the picture, with the names will be in the February issue of Flashbacks. Also, anyone who wishes to send in any memories of their days at Fillmore High or growing up in Fillmore, such as Gerald Hamm, Joe Scanlin, Florine Campbell Ernst and Art Sallee have done, please send them in as members really enjoy reading about days long past.

Fillmore High Alumni Association

For the past year the Fillmore High Alumni Association has been striving to revive the growing of Shasta Daisies to be used to decorate the Junior arches for graduation. This has not been done since 1989, even though other materials have been used to cover the arches. Requests were made for rooted cuttings that could be planted to start another source of daisies, but not enough were obtained to complete the project, so the alumni took it upon themselves to purchase rooted plants so that the daisies hopefully will be ready for the 2010 graduation.
Kirk Richter and his Horticulture class, along with the Grounds staff of the district have prepared an area on the east side of the football field, and have outlined the word FLASHES, in block letters, in which the new plants will be planted. They also plan to plant blue ground cover in between the letters, and also have a flash insignia outlined and planted with yellow flowers. It should be very impressive when it is all completed.
The alumni association is hoping that alumni members will help defray the cost of purchasing the daisies for this important traditional part of the Fillmore High School graduation ceremonies. 10 flats of plants were purchased at a cost of $55 per flat, so any contributions will be greatly appreciated. Anyone wishing to help should indicate on their check that it is for the Shasta Daisy project.
