Humane Society offering free spay and neutering for Chihuahuas

In an effort to quell overpopulation of the breed, the Humane Society of Ventura County is offering free spay or neutering for Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes.

The offer is for residents of Ventura County who own Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes that are 5 years and under and weigh from 5 to 15 pounds.

The HSVC also offers low-cost spay and neutering for all other dogs aged 5 years and under and between 5 and 80 pounds, with the HSVC vets’ approval. Call shelter for details.

The HSVC is singling out Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes for free spay and neutering because shelters and rescue groups throughout Ventura County have seen a large increase in their numbers in recent years.

“These dogs typically make up about a third of the population of our shelter,” said Sherry Brockus, Executive Director of the HSVC. “Although they make wonderful pets, there are many more of them than homes available for them.”

Pets can be spayed or neutered as early as four months of age, and Brockus said those spayed or neutered before they reach maturity are typically healthier and live longer. She added altered pets are also safer as they are less likely to escape from their yards to mate.

Surgeries are done by appointment only, and dogs over 5 may qualify. Call 646-6505 or 646-7849 and 805-656-5031 for more information or visit www.hsvc.org.
