Dancing To Make A Difference

As sponsors of the third annual “Dancing Under the Stars” fundraiser, the Arthur Murray Studios of Santa Barbara, Ventura and Thousand Oaks have put its own twist on the popular TV show "Dancing with the Stars". The event will be held on Sunday, August 23rd to benefit local Community Mediation Programs that assist youth in the Tri-Counties. The highlight of the evening is going to be a dance off featuring local celebrities paired with Arthur Murray dance instructors competing for the title of overall champion and various other awards.

“I was amazed at what they were able to do with my very uninformed body and kooky dance moves… but wow, I learned lots and has a great time,” stated Mark Whitehurst, Publisher of CASA Magazine and a dancer in last years competition. “I hardly knew I was learning lots about dancing. Adding this type of movement and music to my life was wonderful.”

A previous “Dancing Under the Stars” Champion, Maureen “Mo” McFadden (owner of McFadden & McFadden Entertainment P.R.), says the event was "The most fun I've had that was legal in a long time. No really, I highly recommend it for fun, self-esteem, and being able to touch your toes!"

Instructors at the studios love having the opportunity to be a part of this great cause – and have a lot of fun at the same time – as they work with each dancer and make preparations for the event. One instructor said about the event, "If you enjoy watching “Dancing With the Stars,” then this is even better because you can see it live, and it’s all local!” Dance instructor, Javi Ochoa said, “The energy at the event is a thousand times better than anything you could see on TV."

The event will take place on August 23rd at Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort, 633 East Cabrillo Boulevard, Santa Barbara, from 6 – 10 p.m. For the first time, this year’s event will take place in the outside plaza and rotunda, actually under the stars. The evening includes the celebrity dance off, hors d'oeuvres, a no host bar, lots of general dancing for everyone, and a dance performance featuring both Arthur Murray dancers and local professionals. A panel of judges will give their marks, but the final decision lies in the hands of the audience. Dancers from the studios will also be highlighted in a program showing off the many styles of dance taught at the renowned Arthur Murray Dance Studios.

A silent auction starts the evening when the doors open at 6 p.m. and gives attendees a chance to benefit the charities by bidding on great items, ranging from small salon services to vacation and travel opportunities.

Last year, Arthur Murray raised and donated $15,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Tri-Counties. This year, with community support, Dancing Under the Stars hopes to both double the attendance and the monies raised for local charities.

Tickets are available in two main categories. Priority admission with reserved seating is $125 and must be purchased prior to day of event. General admission is $75 in advance ($80 at the door).
