Alyce was born and raised in Davenport, Iowa. Her deceased parents were Harold and Ethel Kuehl. Her deceased brothers were Wayne and George Kuehl and a sister Marilyn (died from a car accident at the age of 4). Alyce lived in Davenport until the age of 12 when she and her parents moved to Monterey Park, California.
She attended Inez elementary school and Mark Keppel High School there and graduated from MK in 1950. One of her most proudest moments was receiving a CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD for not having missed a single day of absence during her 4 years at Mark Keppel. She was a very good tennis player as well!
Following graduation Alyce went to work for 10 years at the Bank of America where she work up to HEAD TELLER. In 1958, while still at the B of A, she married Charles Richardson and at her death she and Charles had just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past January 5, 2023 reaching the very unusual time of 65 years, 2 months and 2 days!
That marriage produced three children, La Von (Richardson) Funk, Craig and Jeff. Those 3 children produced 7 grand children and those 7 produced 9 great grand children. She was very proud of that fact! At one time or another, she had met all 16 of her grand children.
When her husband Charles graduated from California State University in 1967, Alyce returned to school and earned a Associate in Science degree in nursing in 1970 from Mt San Antonio City College. That year she passed the State of California Nursing Exam and became a Registered Nurse.
She then went to work for Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, California where she worked there for 24 years retiring as Head Nurse of the hospital on the midnight shift. Each morning she reported to the CEO of QVH detailing any significant events that the entire hospital had experienced during her 7 PM to 7 AM shift.
She and Charles and daughter La Von (9 months old) lived in San Dimas for 9 months then moved to their first house which they bought in Covina in 1959 where they lived for 5 years. Then they moved into little larger house in West Covina, CA for 9 years. Their final moved was into a much larger house in Walnut, CA where the lived for 24 years.
When they finally retired, in 1996, they took up residence in Stormville, New York two properties away from Charles' brother and wife (Gerry & Barbara Richardson). They bought a very nice 2 acre and 3500 square foot house and lived there for 8 years. But, Alas, snow got the best of them and they moved back to California in August, 2004. They took up residence at the El Dorado Estates Mobile Home Park on November 14, 2004.
Their stay in NY was cut short after Alyce broke shoulder shoving snow. They both wondered why, while in there 70s, are "we fighting the snow issues"? So, they purchased a 2000 square foot beautiful modular unit and loved settling down in the quaint little town of Fillmore, CA. being near their daughter, La Von Richardson Funk who lives in Oakview, CA, their primary support person, who lives there with her husband Guy Funk.
Alyce was an accomplished crochet artist and earned many awards for her beautiful blankets that she produced. The ribbons she won still hang on her "I love me" wall! She made magnificent blankets for all her grand children, many for veterans and many for her good friends. Everyone showered her with admiring compliments over her beautiful blankets! She crochets right up until here death. Her coffin will be covered with one of her grandest works, the AMERICAN FLAG (which earned 1st place at the Ventura County Fair in 2010).
Alyce, with her husband Charles, were instrumental in establishing the new St. Lorenzo Catholic Church in Walnut, CA in 1984. The church there held it's very first service in a rented/converted to church facility warehouse. In 5 years the grandest of church buildings was dedicated and parishioners moved from the warehouse to the newly completed ST. LORENZO CATHOLIC CHURCH!
She and Charles are members of the St. Francis Catholic Church in Fillmore and have been for going on 19 years. On January 7, 2023 the parish priest Fr. Ponds celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a Mass dedicated to them and said marriage prayers on their behalf. The congregation erupted with thunderous applause!
While in Fillmore, Alyce donated a lot of time to the Convalescent Facility there and was a member of the Club who raised money for the facility and residents who live there in Fillmore.
A rosary and viewing at the Perez Funeral Home, 600 N. Central Ave, Fillmore and will occur on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 6:00PM. At 10 AM, the celebration mass for her will be on Friday, April 14 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1248 W. Ventura St., in Fillmore.
Burial services will be at the Bardsdale Cemetery following mass. Following interment attendees are invited to join the family at the church hall for food and a video remembrance of her life with family and friends.
Alyce was admired and view by her many friends and relatives for being a very kind, loving and sincere lady. She was a wonderful mother and wife. She will be missed but never forgotten.
