THOUSAND OAKS, CA - A representational painter featured in an exhibit of American images at California Lutheran University will discuss how his experiences throughout the country have influenced his art at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Seth Tane of Portland, Oregon, will present “The Big Picture: Learning From What You See” in the William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art. The free event is being held in conjunction with the exhibit “The Beautiful: Contemporary Images of America.”

Tane studied sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design in the early 1970s. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he rebuilt a small oil tanker on the Hudson River and used it as a home, studio and commercial salvage ship. He went on to design marine structures, investigate maritime pollution cases and serve as a monitor on supertankers.

A full-time artist for the last few years, Tane paints images of urban, industrial and maritime America. Ships, subways and cityscapes are common subjects.

During his talk, Tane will also discuss how modern technology such as cloud-based document creation and image capture, storage and editing influence traditional methods of painting.

A reception will follow.

Referencing the song “America the Beautiful,” the group show offers glimpses of subjects both ordinary and monumental, from dramatic landscapes and “amber waves of grain” to cityscapes and the everyday pleasures people allow themselves. The mix of Americana reflects the country’s diversity, including many ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Other featured artists are Chris Christion, Terry Evans, Sonya Fe, Roni Feldman, Frank Gohlke, Amanda Joseph, Scott McFarland, Catherine Opie, Sandra Mendelsohn Rubin, Nicolas Shake, Toshio Shibata, Christopher Ulrich, Jessica Wimbley and Christine Wu.

The free exhibit continues through Oct. 2. University Advancement and the Ann Peppers Foundationare sponsoring the exhibit and related events.

The gallery is located in William Rolland Stadium at 160 Overton Court on the Thousand Oaks campus. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
