Alyce Margaret (Kuehl) Richardson (December 1935 – March 2023)

Alyce Margaret (Kuehl) Richardson (December 1935 – March 2023)

Alyce was born and raised in Davenport, Iowa. Her deceased parents were Harold and Ethel Kuehl. Her deceased brothers were Wayne and George Kuehl and a sister Marilyn (died from a car accident at the age of 4). Alyce lived in Davenport until the age of 12 when she and her parents moved to Monterey Park, California.
She attended Inez elementary school and Mark Keppel High School there and graduated from MK in 1950. One of her most proudest moments was receiving a CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD for not having missed a single day of absence during her 4 years at Mark Keppel. She was a very good tennis player as well!
Following graduation Alyce went to work for 10 years at the Bank of America where she work up to HEAD TELLER. In 1958, while still at the B of A, she married Charles Richardson and at her death she and Charles had just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past January 5, 2023 reaching the very unusual time of 65 years, 2 months and 2 days!
That marriage produced three children, La Von (Richardson) Funk, Craig and Jeff. Those 3 children produced 7 grand children and those 7 produced 9 great grand children. She was very proud of that fact! At one time or another, she had met all 16 of her grand children.
When her husband Charles graduated from California State University in 1967, Alyce returned to school and earned a Associate in Science degree in nursing in 1970 from Mt San Antonio City College. That year she passed the State of California Nursing Exam and became a Registered Nurse.
She then went to work for Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, California where she worked there for 24 years retiring as Head Nurse of the hospital on the midnight shift. Each morning she reported to the CEO of QVH detailing any significant events that the entire hospital had experienced during her 7 PM to 7 AM shift.
She and Charles and daughter La Von (9 months old) lived in San Dimas for 9 months then moved to their first house which they bought in Covina in 1959 where they lived for 5 years. Then they moved into little larger house in West Covina, CA for 9 years. Their final moved was into a much larger house in Walnut, CA where the lived for 24 years.
When they finally retired, in 1996, they took up residence in Stormville, New York two properties away from Charles' brother and wife (Gerry & Barbara Richardson). They bought a very nice 2 acre and 3500 square foot house and lived there for 8 years. But, Alas, snow got the best of them and they moved back to California in August, 2004. They took up residence at the El Dorado Estates Mobile Home Park on November 14, 2004.

Their stay in NY was cut short after Alyce broke shoulder shoving snow. They both wondered why, while in there 70s, are "we fighting the snow issues"? So, they purchased a 2000 square foot beautiful modular unit and loved settling down in the quaint little town of Fillmore, CA. being near their daughter, La Von Richardson Funk who lives in Oakview, CA, their primary support person, who lives there with her husband Guy Funk.
Alyce was an accomplished crochet artist and earned many awards for her beautiful blankets that she produced. The ribbons she won still hang on her "I love me" wall! She made magnificent blankets for all her grand children, many for veterans and many for her good friends. Everyone showered her with admiring compliments over her beautiful blankets! She crochets right up until here death. Her coffin will be covered with one of her grandest works, the AMERICAN FLAG (which earned 1st place at the Ventura County Fair in 2010).
Alyce, with her husband Charles, were instrumental in establishing the new St. Lorenzo Catholic Church in Walnut, CA in 1984. The church there held it's very first service in a rented/converted to church facility warehouse. In 5 years the grandest of church buildings was dedicated and parishioners moved from the warehouse to the newly completed ST. LORENZO CATHOLIC CHURCH!
She and Charles are members of the St. Francis Catholic Church in Fillmore and have been for going on 19 years. On January 7, 2023 the parish priest Fr. Ponds celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a Mass dedicated to them and said marriage prayers on their behalf. The congregation erupted with thunderous applause!
While in Fillmore, Alyce donated a lot of time to the Convalescent Facility there and was a member of the Club who raised money for the facility and residents who live there in Fillmore.
A rosary and viewing at the Perez Funeral Home, 600 N. Central Ave, Fillmore and will occur on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 6:00PM. At 10 AM, the celebration mass for her will be on Friday, April 14 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1248 W. Ventura St., in Fillmore.
Burial services will be at the Bardsdale Cemetery following mass. Following interment attendees are invited to join the family at the church hall for food and a video remembrance of her life with family and friends.
Alyce was admired and view by her many friends and relatives for being a very kind, loving and sincere lady. She was a wonderful mother and wife. She will be missed but never forgotten.

Viola Maxine Holley Merry (June 1931 – January 2023)

Viola Maxine Holley Merry (June 1931 – January 2023)

Viola Maxine Holley Merry (known to all as “Maxine”), age 91, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2023 in Gig Harbor, Washington, after a short illness.
Maxine was born on June 5, 1931 in Wilson, Oklahoma to James Claudie and Gracie Ellen Taylor. James and Ellen Taylor, along with their five children, made the long trip to California in 1936 and settled in Fillmore.
Maxine attended schools in the Fillmore School District through high school; later attending Ventura College and obtaining her AA degree in 1993. Maxine was involved in many clubs during her high school years, including the Art Club, Stage Craft, Ushers Club, Junior and Senior Tri-Y, and Student Council Commissioner of Advertisement. During high school, Maxine started attending Fillmore Presbyterian Church where she met Bernard L. Holley. Maxine later married Bernard on July 21, 1948. They moved to their home on the Holley Ranch on Cliff Avenue, surrounded by orange and avocado trees and the beauty of the San Cayetano Mountain as their backyard view. Bernard and Maxine had four children, Janice, Patrick, Jeanne and Jonathan. During the years while the children were young, Bernard and Maxine took many trailer camping trips and trips to the beach. The family was very involved in the Presbyterian Church (later Fillmore Bible Church) and attended many church activities and participated in Sunday School and other weekday groups there. Bernard and Maxine were married for 43 years until Bernard’s death in 1991 from Parkinson’s Disease.
Maxine loved traveling and traveled to various countries through the years, Greece, Italy, Ireland, just to name a few, keeping photographs and journals from her travels. She also loved traveling to Hawaii. She traveled with groups of people she didn’t know, as well as with friends and family.
Maxine reconnected with Stanley Merry, a family friend and local Fillmore man and they married in 1999. Maxine and Stan did a substantial amount of traveling during their years together, locally, by air and many cruises. Both Stan and Maxine had homes in Fillmore; Stan in the Bardsdale area and Maxine on the Cliff Ave Ranch. Stan and Maxine split their time between the two homes until Stan’s death in 2007.
Maxine was always an avid reader. In her younger years, the gift of choice from her brothers was books! She loved literature of all kinds and read over 230 books in one year a few years ago. She made sure to reach 100 books read in 2022 by finishing a biography of Paul Newman on New Year’s Eve 2022! In addition to her reading, Maxine loved word games in the newspaper, and was always up for a Scrabble game with close friends or family. Maxine was devout in her Christian faith and her reading included religious devotional books and the Bible.
Maxine was quite artistic from a young age and continued her gift of drawing and painting throughout her adult life. Art was one of the classes she thoroughly enjoyed at Ventura College during her studies there and she produced some wonderful artwork during that time. Maxine used her art skills at church where the children would gather up front to listen to her presentation of a short message while creating chalk drawings to go along with the message.
Another skill of Maxine’s was cooking. Maxine cooked for the Rotary Club for many years to the delight of many members of the club! She also cooked for the Lion’s Club and other local organizations and private celebrations when requested. Maxine loved preparing food and inviting friends and family for dinners and also baking and taking food to friends and family, whether needed or not, just because that’s who she was! During her last year, while living in Gig Harbor, WA with her daughter and son-in-law, she got very involved in watching The Great British Bake Off with them and enjoyed that thoroughly.
Maxine loved flowers and maintained roses, annuals and perennials in her yard. She loved seeing the hummingbirds and kept them well fed. Maxine also enjoyed the other wildlife that came to “visit” now and again; deer, coyotes and an occasional bear! She created beautiful flower bouquets to keep in her house, for other people and for the church.
Maxine was a member of the Ventura County Garden Club and the local PEO Chapter in Fillmore for many years. The meetings, outings and friendships were such an important part of Maxine’s life in Fillmore.
In 2022, Maxine made the decision to sell the Cliff Avenue Ranch and move to Gig Harbor, WA to live with her daughter, Jeanne and husband, Robert. Maxine came to enjoy all aspects of the Pacific NW, including the weather! She loved that she could look out any window of the house and see flowers. She continued to keep in close touch with family and friends through e-mail, phone calls and her lovely cards and notes. Maxine enjoyed her time with the WA family (even the resident dog and cats), going on outings to local nurseries, getting acquainted with the local library, going to a live production in Seattle, and trying new restaurant foods.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents James Claude and Ellen, and her brothers, J.C. and Boyce (“Cotton”) and her sisters, Geneva and Kathy.
Maxine is survived by her children, Janice Holley, Jeanne Gleim (Robert), and Jonathan Holley. Her son, Patrick preceded her in death in 1974. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Maxine was dearly loved by all her family, friends and acquaintances and she will be greatly missed.
If you wish to make a memorial contribution, the family suggests they be made to the Ventura County Library (Fillmore branch) or the Fillmore High School Alumni Association.

Janice Kay Carruthers (1939-2023)

Janice Kay Carruthers (1939-2023)

Some people leave us early, others after a long, full life.
At the age of 83, Janice Kay Carruthers (nee Dunn) peacefully passed away February 7, 2023 following complications from a fall in early December 2022. Despite valiant efforts at rehabilitation following hip surgery, her path led her home to eternal rest where she joins her son, Brian, who passed away in 2021 and her beloved husband, Don, lost to cancer in 2001. Now, she is reunited with them again, forever.
Born in 1939 in San Bernardino, Janice was the first college graduate in her family. At a time when most career options for women were limited to secretary, nurse or teacher, Janice became a primary grade teacher for nearly 30 years, mostly out at Piru School where she taught grades two through six. Known as a tough but fair teacher dedicated to creating learning experiences, she fostered the nickname ‘La Bruha’ (The Witch) – largely due to her car’s license plate frame that read: “My other car is a broomstick.”
As well as being a devoted wife and mother, Janice felt a family wasn’t complete without its four-legged members. Over the decades, she made sure the family had a menagerie of pets – mostly cats and dogs. She was particularly brilliant at naming them, believing their names should speak to their character and NOT be of human origin. So, there was a cat named ‘Tuffer’ who ended up being the neighborhood badass; a mixed mutt named ‘Bushes’ who was found abandoned as a puppy in the bushes of the riverbed; a Dachshund name ‘Schnitzie’ relating to the breed’s German origin; a gray tabby cat named ‘Pewter’ and a dog named ‘Ticky’ because her tongue ticked when she panted. Many pawprints graced both home and hearts because of Janice’s love of pets.
Janice is survived by her daughter, Carrie Carruthers and sister, Judy Gregg.
Funeral Services: Perez Family Mortuary | 600 Central Ave | Fillmore, CA 93015 on March 3, 11:00AM Pacific.

He married his only sweetheart Maria del Carmen Sanchez.
They met at Mount Carmel Church when he was just seventeen.
A year later, Jose continued his education and went to College in Big Spring, Texas.
In 1965 he and his wife moved to California, where he began to work for General Motors. He worked ten years for this company until he decided to work for RTD, which later became MTA. He stayed working with MTA for twenty years until his retirement.
Once retired, he and his wife decided to live in San Fernando, California - leaving their Fillmore home to their son Jose Juan.
Jose was very gentle and considerate, especially with the elderly and children. He read plenty of books and scripture to keep his mind well-informed on just about any subject, which he later shared in interesting conversations. He was devoted to the Catholic Church and served in many ministries such as altar server, and ministry of the Eucharist. He and his wife would prepare couples for marriage and assisted priests whenever they needed a helping hand.
In his heart, he adopted a loving family: Alma Rios and her six children Michael, Maria, Vanessa, Araceli, Enrique, and Keily who accompanied him his wife, and son from the very first day he entered the hospital until his departure.
Jose was preceded in death by his parents Jose & Paulita Vasquez, brother Jose Carmen, Sister Cecilia OSF, Sister Carolina OSF, and Sister Carmen. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Carmen, son Jose Juan, Sister Isabel, brothers: Patricio, Ernesto, Arturo, Fidencio, Javier, Alexandro, and numerous nephews and nieces, which he all cherished dearly.

Obituary
Angela Rangel (1949-2022)

Angela Rangel (1949-2022)

Angela Rangel was a beloved, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother sister, aunt and friend. She left this world suddenly to be with the Lord on December 22, 2022, at the age of 73.
She was born on June 22, 1949, in Santa Maria De Los Angeles, Jalisco, Mexico to Isidoro Hernandez and Guadalupe Ramos. She was the fourth child out of ten children. At the age of seven, her family relocated to Tijuana Mexico.
Her sister, Manuela, recalls our mother as a happy child who liked to be around her family, as well was a hard worker.
At the age of 19, Angela chose to be brave by being the first to venture to America to help her parents provide for the family - first to San Diego then to Ventura County with her loving cousin Fita, the wife of Jesus Rangel. Shortly after, Angela met Jesus’s brother Ramiro Rangel, whom she later married on July 22, 1972. Angela and Ramiro had 5 children.
Angela displayed a life that loved the Lord and worshipped him with her whole heart. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren and would do anything for them.
Angela will be remembered as strong and independent, never holding back from speaking her heart so as to love all unconditionally. Angela daily recognized the very many blessings from God, including having much love from her husband & family.
Angela enjoyed spending time at church and being with her family and friends. She also enjoyed outings to Chumash Casino and sending beautiful messages through phone calls, text and social media to family and friends.
Angela worked hard as a homemaker and as an employee in the community. By example, she taught her family “where there is a will there’s a way”. Though Angela did not drive, by her love & determination, she managed to find a way to get wherever she could to be productive and a blessing. Even with her limited English, she always found a good job. And after all of these years Angela still managed to use much of her wages to support her family in Mexico who never ventured to California as she had. She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Angela is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ramiro; her children Ramiro Jr, Rosario, Imelda, Sandra (George), Marcos (Amber); 15 grandchildren, Aime (Austin), Brianna (Richard), Javier (Marina), Rafael, Cristopher, Jacob, Angel, Julian, Hasmin, Cesar, Gabriel, Natalie, Ramiro, Sophia and Marcos Jr.; 7 great grandchildren, Dexter, Everly, Hazel, Briella, Eden, Lorena and Javier Jr. Her siblings Juan, Sabino, Manuela, Refugio and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Isidoro and Guadalupe Hernandez; her brothers; Pedro, Gabriel, Luis, Jorge, and her sister Benita Hernandez.
